"Once" and "Begin Again" director John Carney is taking a respite from musicals with word that he's in early talks to direct "Russ & Roger Go Beyond" at Stx Entertainment and Sobini Films.
Will Ferrell and Josh Gad will star in the film about soft-core porn impresario Russ Meyer and then young film critic Roger Ebert who teamed up to produce the raunchy 1970s spoof "Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls".
At the time, 20th Century Fox was struggling after several big-budget flops and gave "Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill!" director Meyer an opportunity to do a studio film, the director insisting the film critic would have to pen the script. The result was a rare major-studio release with an X rating, but one that became a profitable hit.
Christopher Cluess ("The Simpsons," "Saturday Night Live") will pen the script while Mark Amin, David Permut and Richard Waltzer will produce.

Citing “creative differences,” director Michael Winterbottom has exited comedic biopic Russ & Roger, according to a report by The Wrap.
Attached to the simmering comedic project since last April, Winterbottom appeared to be a shoo-in to take the reins of the feature film when production was finally set in motion early next year, though Stx Entertainment will now begin canvassing for a replacement sooner rather than later. Orbiting around the atypical real-life friendship between filmmaker Russ Meyer and film critic Roger Ebert, Stx’s drama still has a hold of Will Ferrell and Pixels star Josh Gad, who are on board to play Meyer and Ebert, respectively.
Russ & Roger will chart their mutual love for all things cinema, and their collaborations behind the lens – most notably for 1970’s cult classic Beyond the Valley of the Dolls. Defying the then-steadfast Hollywood establishment in every which way, Ebert and Meyer co-wrote the uproarious feature,...

“The Wedding Ringer” star Josh Gad is being eyed to play Roger Ebert opposite Will Ferrell in the fact-based indie movie “Russ & Roger Go Beyond,” producer David Permut told Hollywood-Elsewhere on Sunday.
Gad has not inked a deal and hasn’t even read the script yet, an individual familiar with the project told TheWrap, but he is the producers’ top choice to play Ebert and the chance to work with Ferrell is an enticing opportunity for any rising comic actor.
While the film’s director hasn’t been revealed, Emmy winner Christopher Cluess (“Saturday Night Live”) wrote the script,...

Will Ferrell is circling the role of soft core film producer Russ Meyer in "Russ & Roger Go Beyond," an indie film about the making of cult classic "Beyond The Valley of the Dolls".
The story is set in the very late 1960s when cheap counterculture films made big money. Meyer was the outlaw helmer of soft-core pulp films such as "Faster Pussycat, Kill, Kill" but wanted to make a legitimate studio film.
At the time, 20th Century Fox was in desperate need of a low-cost, high returning hit after a series of flops. Meyer agreed to take on the film, originally a sequel to but ultimately a parody of the film adaptation of Jacqueline Susann's enormous hit "Valley of the Dolls".
There was one condition, that a third string movie critic at the time named Roger Ebert would pen the script. Ebert was one of the few people who...

SNL & "The Simpsons" scribe Christopher Cluess has sold his true story script "Russ and Roger Go Beyond" to Sobini Films, Permut Presentations and Chautauqua Entertainment.
The film will deal with the unique relationship between filmmaker Russ Meyer and legendary critic Roger Ebert during the making of the 1970 cult classic "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls".
The story is set at the end of the 1960s when Meyer was known for his soft-core pulp films like "Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!".
Meanwhile, 20th Century Fox was coming off a string of flops and then studio head Richard Zanuck offered Meyer the directorship of 'Beyond'. The film was originally intended to be a sequel to 1967's adaptation of Jacqueline Susann's "Valley of the Dolls," but it ultimately became a parody of it.
Meyer agreed to the gig on the condition that budding young Chicago Sun Times film critic Ebert would write the script.

Exclusive: Too often, I reveal projects I feel like I’ve seen before. Occasionally, I write about ones that I know I’m going to want to see. Here’s one of those. How about a feature about the unusual relationship between two icons in their respective fields, film critic Roger Ebert and soft core helmer Russ Meyer, as they teamed to make Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls at 20th Century Fox? Mark Amin’s Sobini Films has partnered with David Permut and Richard Waltzer to acquire Russ & Roger Go Beyond, a script by Emmy winning Saturday Night Live and The Simpsons scribe Christopher Cluess. The script focus is the late 60s, when cheap counterculture films like Easy Rider were minting money, and 20th Century Fox was struggling mightily over a number of big budget flops. Meyer was already established as the outlaw helmer of soft-core pulp films like Faster Pussycat,...
