Grown-ish is making way for a full-circle guest-starring appearance as Malcolm-Jamal Warner joins Freeform‘s black-ish spinoff in the role of Darnell, father to Diggy Simmons‘ Doug. In an exclusive sneak peek, we’re giving fans their first look at Warner’s character in action as he observes Doug at work. The topic is a touchy one for the two as Doug butts heads with his dad Darnell over his career choice. What makes Warner’s appearance a full-circle moment is his history with the series A Different World, which influenced Grown-ish, a series that is considered a more modern counterpart to the popular series. Now, Warner’s guest-starring role is bringing a direct link between the two by stepping into the Freeform show. Freeform In the clip, above, the scene begins with Aaron (Trevor Jackson) chatting up Doug at the bar, where he says, “I’m good with parents,...

[Editor’s Note: this list was originally published in March 2018. It has since been updated with new entries.]
It’s easy to think of the kind of stories that get told in the comic book world as just one genre or tone, but as seen below, graphic novels, comic strips, and other sequential art have offered up an incredible range of storytelling. And these stories have been inspiring great TV shows for years, even before superhero stories dominated the box office.
There were plenty of options that nearly made the list, like the WB’s “Smallville,” which squandered its early potential after running just a few seasons too long. Because one of the most exciting things about these stories is that there’s a rich variety to choose from.
With editorial contributions from Liz Shannon Miller, Ben Travers, and Hanh Nguyen.

9-1-1 is adding a face from Bobby’s (Peter Krause) past for the second half of Season 7.
According to Deadline, Malcolm-Jamal Warner has landed a four-episode arc as Amir.
Amir is a nurse in a hospital’s burn unit with a surprising connection to Bobby.
Details about how the pair come into contact have not been disclosed, but given that we know Amir’s profession, there’s a good chance it will result from a character winding up in that unit.
If Amir’s tie is to Bobby, we expect it to be someone from the 118.
Let’s hope it isn’t Buck (Oliver Stark). He needs a break after his brush with death after being struck by lightning.
Could Malcolm Jamal-Warner become a new series regular?
It’s unclear whether the four episodes could become something more because 9-1-1 has already earned a Season 8 renewal at ABC.

Uh-oh, should we be ready for more heartbreak for one of the members of the 118? 9-1-1 has added The Resident‘s Malcolm-Jamal Warner to play a nurse, Amir, in four episodes, according to Deadline. He works in a hospital burn unit and has a connection to Captain Bobby Nash’s (Peter Krause) past. As 9-1-1 has shown in flashbacks in the past—origins stories have been “Begins” episodes—before Bobby moved out to Los Angeles, he lost his entire family in an apartment fire, one he inadvertently caused; his wife died of her burn injuries in the hospital. Now, we’re about to meet someone from his past just as he and his wife Athena (Angela Bassett) have gotten past a rough patch during their honeymoon cruise ship — the disaster actually led to them talking about problems that have been brewing for some time. “With all of their...

When the nominations for the 1959 Primetime Emmys were revealed, 13-year-old supporting candidate Johnny Crawford (“The Rifleman”) became the youngest male acting contender in TV academy history and then retained the title for the next six and a half decades. After so many years of his record appearing to be unbreakable, it was finally shattered this summer by Best Drama Guest Actor nominee Keivonn Montreal Woodard, who turned 10 this February. His historic bid for HBO’s “The Last of Us” makes him not only a credit to child actors but also to deaf performers, as no male one had ever earned Emmy recognition before.
Woodard appears in two first-season episodes of “The Last of Us” as Sam Burrell, a survivor of both leukemia and a pandemic-induced apocalypse who lives under the guardianship of his adult brother, Henry (Lamar Johnson). Alec Mercer absolutely hates testifying as an expert witness, but he does so for a very good cause in this week’s The Irrational.
Monday’s episode finds Jesse L. Martin’s character hitting the courtroom to help a friend of Kylie’s whose husband was killed in his home when police accidentally — or so they say — stormed the wrong house. The cops have Dr. Dustin Atwood (played by The Resident‘s Malcolm-Jamal Warner) on their side, a morally dubious character who “never met a police shooting he couldn’t justify,” Alec sneers.

L.A. Law star Blair Underwood and Josie Hart married in the Dominican Republic at the Casa de Campo Resort & Villas.
The two have been friends for 43 years and have been together for a few years. They got engaged in November 2022.
Underwood detailed how involved he was in planning the wedding. He explained on social media that he is a “perfectionist,” so he made sure that everything was impeccable.
They hired a wedding planner, Theresa Calcos of Casa de Campo, who assisted the couple in organizing a pre-wedding welcome party and creating the ideal decor and ambiance.
The couple invited 100 guests to their intimate ceremony, including Malcolm-Jamal Warner and Kim Fields.
The menu was specifically selected to feature Dominican food, including grilled bacon-wrapped plantains, ceviche and coconut-breaded shrimp. The bride’s signature drink was included as well, which is Prosecco with grenadine.
Hart wore a custom-made two-in-one white dress, with a detachable overskirt.

It’s appropriate that Netflix dropped the sixth season of “Black Mirror” on June 15, the same day that Emmy voting began. The series isn’t eligible for this year’s awards, of course, but it has been a dominant force at the Emmys for years, even sparking a rule change that affects a number of other anthology programs this year.
And because of that rule change, it’s going to be a lot harder for any of those other programs — which include “Documentary Now!” and “Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities” — to be nominated for Emmys this year.
First, a little background. “Black Mirror,” created by Charlie Brooker and first airing in 2011, was inspired by the classic 1950s and ’60s series “The Twlight Zone,” in which Rod Serling used each episode to tell a different story — usually creepy or scary, usually with a twist, always with a moral. Back then,...

Juneteenth, which falls on June 19, commemorates the fall of slavery in the United States.
It celebrates the anniversary of the order made by Major General Gordon Granger on June 1965 that proclaimed freedom for slaves in Texas. The order was actually made two years after Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.
In a tweet Monday, former President Obama explained it as the “delayed but welcome news of freedom reaching the enslaved Black folks in Galveston, Texas.” In 2021, President Biden made Juneteenth a federal holiday.
Many networks are marking the occasion with Juneteenth TV specials or movie marathons showcasing Black talent and/or excellence. See our viewing guide below:

This year’s first-round Primetime Emmy nominations ballot includes a total of 51 Best Limited Series hopefuls. This is down from 2022’s unusually high total of 61, yet still much higher than 2021’s 37, 2020’s 41, and 2019’s 35.
All 20,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until June 26 to cast their 2023 Emmy Awards nominations ballots for programs. Unlike the Oscars, voters for the Emmys do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally. After six years of not having to limit their choices in any categories, members’ selections can now not be greater than the number of eventual nominations for a given award, which, in this case, will be five.

Dean and Bill Williams’ adventure in New York City is about to take a loud turn on “The Wonder Years.”
Wednesday’s Season 2 premiere of the ABC comedy series, titled “One Small Step,” picks up in the summer of 1969 as the father-son duo head to the Big Apple for a career-making songwriting gig for Bill (Dulé Hill). The trip introduces both members of the Williams family to “new walks of life” while in the city, according to the episode’s official logline — and that apparently includes getting in touch with their “primal” feelings.

In adapting Accused for an American audience, showrunner and executive producer Howard Gordon saw an opportunity to explore the grey areas of the justice system.
“The world has gotten so polarized and weaponized, and the show really was designed to sort of explore the messy middle, that we’re all kind of struggling to find — the nuances that no one seems to be interested in anymore,” he said during Deadline’s Contenders TV panel on Sunday.
Accused, which is adapted from a British television series of the same name, is a crime anthology that follows a new defendant in each episode. The episode starts with a character accused of a crime before taking viewers back through what happened, asking the difficult questions about whether the circumstances warrant the consequence they’re facing.

Fox is making a case for its crime anthology series “Accused” for this year’s Emmys.
The freshman broadcast series will vie for consideration in the limited or anthology series categories, and Variety can exclusively reveal the creative teams’ plans for submitting its sprawling ensemble and its respective races.
Despite each episode tackling a new story with different characters, setting and subject matter, the actors have opted to divide themselves into separate acting races.

Last season, The Resident's renewal came down to the wire. The ratings are middle-of-the-road, and Fox no longer owns the series (since the studio was sold to Disney). As a result, the network doesn't make as much profit from the show and is shifting toward only airing shows they produce. Will The Resident be cancelled or renewed for season seven? Stay tuned. *Status Update Below.

"The Resident" season 6 ended its relatively short run back in January, but Fox waited a long time to weigh in on the fate of the long-running series. At long last, it has been confirmed that this is the end for Conrad Hawkins and the rest of the staff at Chastain Memorial Hospital. Yes, sad to say for fans of the show, it will not be returning for a seventh season, so the season 6 finale will ultimately serve as the series finale.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fox has officially canceled the medical show after six full seasons and 107 episodes. The series was produced by 20th Century Television and was created by Amy Holden Jones, Hayley Schore, and Roshan Sethi. It's worth pointing out that "The Resident" season 6 was the shortest in the show's history at just 13 episodes, and that may have, in hindsight, been a bit of writing on the wall.

The end could be on the horizon for The Resident.
According to TV Line, the medical drama does not stand a great chance of being picked up for a seventh season.
"It's essentially done," a source close to the show told the outlet.
In a word? Whoa.
Despite The Resident Season 6 closing with a finale that functioned as a series-ender, there was still a hope the show would be picked up.
While one person's account of the situation can be wrong, TV Line cites "multiple sources" in its report.
More concerning is that it seems many of the show's props are being sold, which is usually an indication that a project has wrapped.
Fox did tell the outlet that no decision has been made about the show's future, but the show's prognosis is grim.
The Resident Season 6 averaged 2.8 million viewers and a 0.34 rating among adults 18-49.

Roger Allers joined Disney in 1985, becoming part of a group of artists tasked with reviving public interest in Disney’s animated films by producing fresh theatrical releases. Allers directed his first feature picture, the Oscar-winning The Lion King (1994), which was adapted into a smash-hit Broadway musical.
The filmmaker spent the next many years at Disney, contributing to every animated feature film the company released. Among these are Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Rescuers Down Under, The Little Mermaid, and The Prince and the Pauper. Allers would later leave the studio after one of his projects was rejected.

While we may not know if we’ll see any more of our favorite doctors on The Resident — Season 6 ended on January 17, and Fox has yet to make a decision about its future — Malcolm-Jamal Warner (Dr. Aj Austin) did pop up on Accused this past week. When we chatted with him about that guest spot in the anthology series, we took the opportunity to ask about the medical drama. While Warner has not yet heard anything about Season 7, he does know what he’d like to see, plus shared his thoughts on two of Aj’s storylines, regarding his family and a big risk he took to save the governor’s life in exchange for saving Chastain. Season 6 ended with Padma (Aneesha Joshi) coming home, but do you think she and Aj can make a family, whatever theirs will look like, work? We haven’t really seen that yet. Malcolm-Jamal Warner: Yeah,...

For The Resident fans missing Dr. Aj Austin, the good news is Malcolm-Jamal Warner is back on Fox in the February 14 episode of Accused. However, as TV Insider’s exclusive sneak peek of “Kendall’s Story” shows, it’s for, as to be expected with this anthology series, a heartbreaking investigation. In the clip, Kendall (Warner) goes to the police station to see the detective, Trent Douglas (Wendell Pierce), on his daughter’s case. Douglas assures him they’re checking out the park as well as the neighborhood and looking through CCTV footage to find the man who assaulted his daughter. “Everything that we possibly can be doing, we’re doing,” he says. “But in the meantime — ” Kendall interrupts to ask, “Have you contacted the local news? So more people know who you’re looking for?” Douglas tells him he gets that he wants the man locked up, and Kendall interrupts him again.

Howard Gordon’s return to Fox has proved to be fruitful for the network. The premiere episode of his latest crime drama Accused aired Sunday night to record ratings.
The crime anthology series scored a 2.0 rating among the advertiser-friendly 18-49 demographic as well as 8.4M viewers, according to early live+same-day Nielsen data. That makes it the highest-rated and most-watched debuts across broadcast or cable in the last three years.
It’s worth noting that the episode had a lead in from the Dallas Cowboys vs. San Francisco 49ers matchup. That’s always bound to boost ratings, but these debut numbers are pretty impressive even with an NFL lead-in.
For reference, Fox’s other new drama series Alert: Missing Persons Unit also had an NFL lead-in for its premiere episode earlier this month and managed...
