Long before I debated the sexuality of the Maserati Quattroporte with Eddie Alterman or went car-shopping with Glee’s Chord Overstreet, I conducted my first-ever Stick Shift interview with the effervescent Chris Webb, then lead creative designer at General Motors—in short, the person responsible for choosing the colors that coat the inside and outside of every single G.M. model (nearly five-dozen in total). Way back then, he predicted that earth tones would soon make a huge resurgence in the luxury car market. As a child of the 70s—an era whose miresome malaise was varnished on its vehicles in every conceivable excremental shade—this seemed fundamentally impossible. And yet, my recent round-trip jaunt from Miami to Key West was made in the company of a $206,000 Bentley Continental Gt painted a chocolatey brown so dark and rich it would bankrupt the Knipschildts.
