'We Collide' has been named as the winner of the BMW Filmmaking Challenge in partnership with the BFI.The short film has been written and directed by Jason Bradbury and has been described as "pushing creative boundaries, while highlighting stories and characters underserved on screen with heart and tenderness".'We Collide' - produced by Cheri Darbon - embraces the spirit of queercore by exploring the power of the mosh pit and finding romance in unlikely places and was declared the unanimous winner by judges Ncuti Gatwa, Terri White and Asif Kapadia. The movie premiered alongside Kibwe Tavares and Daniel Kaluuya's 'The Kitchen' at the closing night of the BFI London Film Festival on Sunday (15.10.23).In a statement, the judging panel said: "For us, it was unanimous: we were blown away by this film that illustrates the medium of short film, yet it could easily transition into a feature film.

After nine years, 18 episodes and a lot of effing and blinding, Happy Valley aired its fiery, heart-squeezing finale last night (5 February).
*Warning: this article contains spoilers*
Following Tommy Lee Royce’s (James Norton) escape from prison, the scheming villain and Sergeant Catherine Cawood (Sarah Lancashire) had their long anticipated showdown in her kitchen.
“I forgive you,” Tommy told her. “You forgive me?” she spat back, her taser pointed at his chest.
After an agonising face-to-face (summarised in full here), Tommy poured petrol over himself and lit a match, signalling the end of the years-long reign of terror he had over Catherine and her family.
She was later notified of his death via a text that simply read: “Tlr dead.”
Fans of the show have called the finale “absolute perfection”.
Writer Terri White tweeted: “Absolute perfection. Every word. Every breath… The way Sally Wainwright writes villains and victims is entirely radical.

Film critics have shared their mixed reactions to Andrea Riseborough’s surprise nomination for the 2023 Oscars.
On Tuesday (24 January), the nominations were announced for this year’s Academy Awards. You can read the full list of nominees here.
Among the snubs and surprises of the nominations was the inclusion of Andrea Riseborough in the Best Actress category.
The British actor stars in indie drama To Leslie as a Texas mother who wins the lottery. But while her performance received rave reviews, the film made just £22,000 in the global box office when it was released in October, leading many to believe that not enough awards voters had seen it to be a contender.
However, in mid-January, a guerrilla campaign began for Riseborough’s nomination on social media. High-profile stars, including Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Winslet, Amy Adams, Jennifer Aniston and Jane Fonda, all praised the film online, calling for it to be considered by awards voters.

“She Said” screenwriter Rebecca Lenkiewicz has said the New York Times journalists who broke the Harvey Weinstein story in 2017 fed her chapters of their book as they were writing it in order to bring the novel to screen sooner.
Speaking as part of a Variety-sponsored London Film Festival panel on screenwriting, the British scribe of such films as the Keira Knightley-fronted “Colette” and Pawel Pawlikowski’s “Ida” described working closely with reporters Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey to write Universal’s film adaptation of their 2019 book. The process took around four years, said Lenkiewicz.
“I started working on it before I read the book,” said the Devon-born writer, who had six “freeing” weeks of writing on her own before even getting sight of a chapter.

Bad Wolf, the producer of “The Night Of” for HBO, “A Discovery of Witches” for Sky, and “His Dark Materials” for BBC and HBO, has optioned rights for the book “Coming Undone” by Terri White, editor-in-chief of Empire magazine, in a deal with Anna Pallai at Amp Literary.

The book details the years spent battling between her outward image as an award-winning editor named one of Folio’s “Top Women in U.S. Media,” and her “inner reality darkened by past trauma, which lead her skidding towards a mental health crisis and into a locked psychiatric ward.

“Bombshell” opened on December 13 fresh off of a week when it earned four Critics’ Choice Award nominations, four SAG Award nominations, and two Golden Globe nominations. But what do critics at large think of this satirical take on the Fox News sexual harassment scandal that brought down Roger Ailes (played by John Lithgow)?
As of this writing the film has a MetaCritic score of 66 based on 27 reviews counted thus far: 17 positive, 9 somewhat mixed, only 1 outright negative. Meanwhile, Rotten Tomatoes categorizes reviews simply as pass or fail and not with the sliding scale that MetaCritic uses; its freshness rating is 62% based on 74 reviews, 28 of which are classified as negative. Rt summarizes the reviews with its critics’ consensus: “‘Bombshell’ benefits from a terrific cast and a worthy subject, but its impact is muffled by a frustrating inability to go deeper than the sensationalistic surface.”

“Joker” opened on Friday, October 4, but even if you haven’t seen it yet, there’s a good chance you’ve heard about it, or seen someone on the internet who’s angry about it, whether they hated it or hate that someone else hated it. But what’s the actual verdict from critics? It’s not necessarily much clearer.
As of this writing the film has a MetaCritic score of 58 based on 51 reviews, but those reviews are all over the map: 26 of them are positive (including seven rated a perfect 100), 15 are mixed, and 10 are outright negative. Over on Rotten Tomatoes, where reviews are classified on a much simpler pass/fail scale, “Joker” is 70% fresh based on 299 reviews: 208 thumbs up, 91 thumbs down. The Rt critics’ consensus says, “‘Joker’ gives its infamous central character a chillingly plausible origin story that serves as a brilliant showcase for its star — and a dark evolution for comics-inspired cinema.

“The Hangover” director Todd Phillips’ revisionist take on the beginnings of the titular Dceu villain, “Joker,” has finally world-premiered at the Venice Film Festival, and the first takes are all over the place. In his review, IndieWire critic David Ehrlich deemed the Joaquin Phoenix-starring thriller as “potentially toxic,” indebted to such incel origin stories as “Taxi Driver.”
However, Phillips’ film apparently lacks the nuance or sensitivity required of such a project in an age of rampant Reddit trollism — especially when it comes to superhero movies, which attract knives-out fanbases ready to go for the jugular (and probably in the comments section of this post). Reactions to the film bode a long season of uncomfortable discourse.

Popular entertainment so often worships youth who haven't had the time to hone their art. Then there's "Follies" the valentine of a musical to women of a certain age, who know how to work a stage.
These are women who have lived, and as the characters and as actors you can feel they know how lucky they are to stand center stage at Broadway's Marquis Theatre and belt Stephen Sondheim's music.
The theater and the stage are shrouded with black material to bring us into an old theater, about to be razed for a parking lot. But before it goes, there's one last night, one final party for this grand old theater, which between the two world wars, hosted the follies. The women come from all over to see one another, and confront their ghosts. Younger actresses play the chorines from decades ago.
Though an ensemble, Bernadette Peters and Jan Maxwell headline.

Actresses must love Stephen Sondheim. While the composer/lyricist,who basically defined American musical theater in an era of Webbers and Schonbergs, has certainly crafted soaring, complex ballads for his male protagonists — “Being Alive” from Company and “Finishing the Hat” from Sunday in the Park with George spring to mind — it is usually his women who get the showstoppers.
And while he has created some memorable ingenues in his time, the real musical zingers are usually given to what would appear to be Sondheim’s favorite character type: an embittered and acid-tongued yet oddly sexy middle-aged vamp. Usually the character is a supporting player, such as A Little Night Music’s Charlotte or the Witch from Into the Woods. But with Follies, now in previews at the Marquis Theater in New York, it is these women who own the show and get the final bow.

"One of the challenges for me right now is doing eight shows a week. Stephen Sondheim is a composer and lyricist whose work demands that you show up at each performance. I have to be at the top of my form because there are so many emotional changes that Ben goes through during each performance. Although the rock musical “Hair” preaches free love and peaceful co-existence, the cast of the current Broadway revival celebrated a more traditional symbol of love Monday night as three real-life same-sex couples were wed on stage after the show’s curtain call.
With the recent legalization of same-sex marriage in New York State, the city has seen a flurry of marriages since midnight on Sunday.

Thanks to the good people over at Sky Movies HD, HeyUGuys tagged along to a very special event in Union Chapel, Islington. The Sky Movies crew had transformed the Chapel into the most Gothic looking cinema this side of Gotham City.
The stage had been set to kick off the night with a ‘‘Which is the best Batman movie?’’ debate, hosted by 35mm presenter Mark Dolan. This was to be followed by a screening of Dark Knight in all of it’s HD glory.
Four fan-favourite Batman films were selected and advocated in the debate -Batman, Batman Returns, Batman Begins and Dark Knight. Batman was championed by Shortlist editor Terri White, while comedian, movie-geek and ‘Batman-freak’ Josh Howie waved the flag for Batman Returns. Dom ‘Trigger Happy TV’ Joly justified Batman Begins and Vic ‘Eranu/Uvavu’ Reeves drew the “short straw” for Dark Knight. (Disclaimer: The actual views...

When the final curtain drops at the end of the new hit Broadway revival of Finian's Rainbow and the applause is still echoing in her ears, Terri White can scarcely believe any of it is real. A year ago, she was homeless and sleeping in a Greenwich Village park. But now, she's back in the spotlight, in a beloved musical and belting out the showstopper "Necessity" - coincidentally, about life's ups and downs. "I feel like I've been shot out of a cannon," says White, 61. "It really has been a dream." Stark ContrastWhat a difference a year makes. For three months in 2008, White,...
