Set decorator who worked for Merchant Ivory productions, and with Ken Russell and Ridley Scott
The set decorator Ian Whittaker, who has died of prostate cancer aged 94, won an Oscar for the 1992 screen version of Em Forster’s Howards End. This was among the best in a string of literary adaptations directed by James Ivory, produced by Ismail Merchant and scripted by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala. Whittaker was in the running for another Oscar for the same team’s film of Kazuo Ishiguro’s The Remains of the Day (1993), though his career was not confined to costume drama. “Council houses, stately homes, spaceships, I’ve done them all,” he said.
His first nomination was for Ridley Scott’s intergalactic horror smash Alien (1979). To build the futuristic interior of the Nostromo spacecraft, where most of the action takes place, he assembled bits and bobs of old washing machines: “We just stuck them...

It’s the ‘other’ version of Dickens’ terrific novel, an English film that few Americans have seen. This Australian DVD is in the Pal format and from a rather outdated transfer, yet I thoroughly enjoyed seeing a favorite story enacted by a great batch of UK talent. Dirk Bogarde stars and the many character roles go to familiar faces: Cecil Parker, Athene Seyler, Ian Bannen, Alfie Bass, Rosalie Crutchley, Freda Jackson, Christopher Lee, Leo McKern, Donald Pleasence, Eric Pohlmann, Danny Green and the lovely Marie Versini. It’s a regular actor-spotting quiz. Ralph Thomas directed and much of the film was shot in France … with excellent English diction.

In untangling itself from its WarnerMedia holdings with a $43 billion deal with Discovery, AT&T is looking to join Verizon in saying goodbye to Hollywood ambitions. Both telecom giants tried to reap gains from tying content businesses to vast wireless distribution networks. But getting these buys to pay off was more difficult than management expected.
“The simple rule from the past 20 years is that telco and media assets generally do not mix,” argues Ian Whittaker, a London-based finance consultant. “The mindset between the two sides is too different, and it always ends up with the telco companies regretting ...

The British Film Institute (BFI) deserves praise for continuing to invest in restorations of worthy, but largely forgotten, British films from bygone eras. Case in point: the 1953 crime drama "Cosh Boy" (absurdly re-titled "The Slasher" for American release in order to make it appear to be a "B" horror movie.) Incidentally, a "cosh" is old British slang for a blackjack used by thugs to strike victims over the head. The low-budget B&W production is typical of the film output in post-wwii Britain. Britain was on the winning side but after initial jubilation the reality of living in an almost bankrupt nation set in. Rationing was strict, much of the country was in ruins and crime and juvenile delinquency began to rise. "The Slasher", co-written and directed by Lewis Gilbert, touches on these problems by examining how the delinquency problem was exacerbated in part by the loss...

He’s mean, he’s nasty, he carries a razor and he’s dating your sister! Cosh Boy was front & center in 1953 debates about ‘what’s wrong with the British cinema.’ It holds up well, if not as PC social comment, then as solid exploitation fare, with our verminous hero putting the moves on tough-but-vulnerable local girl Joan Collins. The entire cast will want to stand in line to get revenge against Roy Walsh, the punk who steals from his own mum and lets his criminal gang do the dirty work. Take it from me, he’s a dirty rat.

Sky’s share price fell 2% on Thursday on the heels of Comcast’s announcement that it was abandoning its bid for 21st Century Fox assets to focus on acquiring Sky. The drop in share price was seen as a sign of investor concern that the bidding war for Europe’s pay-tv leader could be over.
Fox has until Aug. 8 to counter Comcast’s £14.75 per-share offer, which values Sky at £34 billion. Even after Thursday’s slip in price, Sky was still trading above £15.
Any improved offer by Fox would need to be sanctioned by Disney, which is on track to buy Fox’s major entertainment assets and which must decide how important Sky is to its plans. Disney’s larger play is to add Fox content to its own in preparation for a major direct-to-consumer push to rival the likes of Netflix.

In a note titled, “Take advantage of Friday’s share price fall,” London-based Liberum analyst Ian Whittaker reiterated his position today on ITV stock as a “top pick.” Shares in the UK’s leading commercial broadcaster fell sharply as news of the UK’s vote to leave the EU hit in the early morning hours of June 24, and they continued to slide again today. Pre-Brexit, there was speculation that the company could be the subject of a takeover attempt, and those suggestions…...

ITV is in talks to acquire the television division of The Weinstein Company for up to $950m, according to reports.
The deal would be the broadcaster’s biggest scripted acquisition to date and would give it a slice of rights to Netflix epic period drama Marco Polo and BBC1’s forthcoming remake of War and Peace, which The Weinstein Company is co-producing with Lookout Point, BBC Wales and BBC Worldwide.
ITV is reportedly set make an initial payment of $300 to $400m up-front for the production outfit, with the rest over the next few years – making the deal similar in structure to its acquisition of Talpa Media last month.
Any agreement would allow Harvey Weinstein and his brother Bob continue to oversee the operation, according to reports.
It would represent another boost for ITV Studios and would ramp up the amount of high-end scripted projects that it would produce, as well as opportunities for ITV Studios Global Entertainment...

On Friday, director Ridley Scott arrived in Sydney, Australia, reportedly to scout for locations for Prometheus 2.
Prometheus (2012) starred Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron and Idris Elba, was well received by critics and subsequently a box office hit. The sequel is scheduled for a release in March 2016.
I’ll bet Scott never thought in a million years that he’d be scouting locations for another Alien movie almost 35 years to the day after the original hit theaters.

London – The stock of U.K. TV group ITV on Thursday set its latest all-time high after a bullish analyst report recommended it to investors. Liberum Capital analyst Ian Whittaker raised his fair value target on the stock, whose possible further upside industry observers have been discussing in recent weeks. ITV shares have had a strong run-up this year and have hit all-time highs as the company, led by CEO Adam Crozier, has continued to diversify its business beyond advertising revenue. The firm's growing TV production business is a key part of that trend. ITV shares

London – The stocks of big European entertainment companies, particularly TV networks operators, such as Britain's ITV and Italy's Mediaset, have seen strong gains through the first three quarters of 2013. Meanwhile, pay TV giants have seen diverging stock trends, while French conglomerate Vivendi and pan-European broadcaster Rtl saw their stocks close the third quarter on Monday at about the same prices where they had finished 2012 amid recent questions about their outlook. "European media has had a good performance," said Liberum Capital analyst Ian Whittaker. "The best performers have been the cyclical names, because there has been

Fey's series, 30 Rock, was handed 22 Emmy nominations this morning, which stands as a record for a comedy series. She and Alec Baldwin were also nominated for acting awards.
