Exclusive: Matthew Wilder has been set to write and direct an untitled film that chronicles the life and work of author Joan Didion.
The plan is to paint a dreamlike day in the life of Didion and California in the late 1960s, when the brilliant young journalist is hurtled from encounters with jailed Manson girls to protesting Black Panthers, and from Nancy Reagan pausing in a photo op to Vietnam War POWs — climaxing with an epilogue in a near-future California where an AI Joan encounters a dystopia beyond her wildest anxiety dreams.
The film, produced under David Michaels’ Enfant Terrible Cinema, will shoot in Los Angeles in the first or second quarter of 2024. Financing is being discussed with potential partners this week at AFM.

Will Disney’s live-action remake of “Mulan” follow in the footsteps of the 1998 animated classic by equaling or exceeding its awards haul? It is entirely possible that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and motion picture academy might respond to Harry Gregson-Williams‘ rousing score. He’s already a 2006 Globe nominee for “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe,” so he’s at least on the awards radar. Similarly, the original song from the film, “Loyal Brave True,” performed by pop star Christina Aguilera and penned by Gregson-Williams, Jamie Hartman, Rosi Golan and Billy Crabtree, might also score a nomination from both groups.
The $200 million China-set action drama was directed by Niki Caro (“Whale Rider”) and stars actress Liu Yifei in the title role and co-stars Donnie Yen as Commander Tung, Jason Scott Lee as Bori Khan, Yoson An as Cheng Honghui, with Gong Li as Xianniang and Jet Li as the Emperor.

It’s a Thursday afternoon in December, and on the big screen at the Sony scoring stage, swords are flashing, arrows are flying and soldiers in ancient Chinese garb are spinning in midair.
Composer Harry Gregson-Williams is conducting a 90-piece orchestra in his score for Disney’s “Mulan” (currently available on Disney Plus), the live-action remake of the 1998 animated classic about a girl who disguises herself as a man to take the place of her ailing father in battle. “Brass, mezzo forte at bar 103,” he says just before a take. “Lots of energy! Tense buttocks!” he adds, to the laughter of musicians.
The lights dim, the red recording light is illuminated, and for three minutes the stage echoes with the sounds of pounding percussion, screaming brass and fast-moving string figures. Cue 8M37, “The Emperor Is Taken,” is in the can, and director Niki Caro pronounces it “amazing.”

Disney’s new live-action adaptation of Mulan might not be a movie musical, but that doesn’t mean it is without music. The Niki Caro-directed film, which dropped on Disney+ for “premium access” this weekend, has a score composed and conducted by Harry Gregson-Williams that makes up most of the official Mulan soundtrack. However, the film soundtrack also features two versions of “Reflection,” a tune made famous in America by Christina Aguilera for the soundtrack of the original 1998 animated feature. Twenty-two years later, Aguilera is singing another rendition of “Reflection” for the film’s soundtrack—one of two versions of the song that appears on the 2020 soundtrack. (The other is a Mandarin-language version of the song sung by Mulan star Liu Yifei.) The return of “Reflection” seems to be the main exception to Disney‘s efforts to distance the new, live-action film from the animated version as a way...

More than 2o years ago, Christina Aguilera performed the soaring ballad “Reflection,” written by Matthew Wilder and David Zippel for the soundtrack of Disney’s 1998 animated film Mulan, kickstarting her pop music career. “Reflection” was that rare Disney song to reflect contemporary pop sensibilities as well as being a damn good song, and deservedly went on […]

Should I ask myself in the water, what a warrior would do? In a clandestine, off-market deal that went down earlier this year, Miley Cyrus sold her Malibu home for $1.7 million, a pocketbook punishing $825,000 less than the slightly more than $2.5 million she paid German-born radio and TV presenter (and longtime Haribo spokesperson) Thomas Gottschalk for the enviably secluded two-plus-acre spread in early 2016.
Tax records show the new owners are songwriter-producer Matthew Wilder and his wife, Tamara Dunn. Curiously, it was Wilder and Dunn who, back in 2014, sold a neighboring estate for more than $6.8 million to Cyrus’ now ex-fiancé Liam Hemsworth. It was that home that burned to the ground in the 2018 Woolsey Fire that swept through Malibu and L.A.’s far western suburbs.
Tucked up into a discreet and exclusive gated enclave, the split-level contemporary is further sequestered down a long, gated and tree-shaded drive that passes over a seasonal stream. Since the transaction was done on the down low, it...

Okay, forgive the emotional whiplash, but now it seems that Disney’s live-action adaptation of Mulan just might featuring singing. Or not. Let’s just say, it’s unclear at this point. What we do know is that director Niki Caro is walking back the comment she made that it has “no songs right now.” While that sounds fairly self-explanatory, Caro is now arguing it was misconstrued. Basically, at this point she has no idea whether the movie will incorporate Matthew Wilder and David Zippel’s catchy tunes from the 1998 animated version. ”We’ve never talked about songs, and no decision has been made,” she explained in an interview with the Los Angeles Times.

From the first time I saw it until this moment, two days before what might just be the most important, potentially resonant (for good and ill) American presidential election since the days of the Civil War, no other movie has expanded in my view more meaningfully, more ambiguously, with more fascination than has Robert Altman’s Nashville. We often hear of movies which “transcend” their genres, or their initial ambitions or intentions, and often built into that alleged transcendence is a condescension to said genre, or those ambitions or intentions, as if the roots were somehow corrupt or unworthy, in need of reconstruction. If the form of Nashville transcends anything, it’s the shape and scope of the multi-character drama as we’d come to know it in 1975, which was dominated at the time by disaster movies and their jam-packed casts filled with old Hollywood veterans and Oscar winners. But...

So let’s give a slow clap for (and raise a glass of, well, anything to)… Jennifer!

Note: Do not read on if you have not seen Season 3, Episodes 20 and 21 of Fox's "Glee," entitled "Props" and "Nationals," respectively.
"Glee" has never been perfect. In fact, this season, it's been far from it. But just when you count them out, the New Directions have a way of winning you over again. Ladies and gentlemen, I think I'm a gleek again.
Honestly, I wasn't expecting much from the first hour of "Glee's" two-hour event, so I was pleasantly surprised to see that the much-talked about role reversals were barely a fraction of the episode. I'm not saying that it wasn't fun to see Finn rock Kurt's stylish cape collection, and to see Tina put on a pait of knee-high socks and belt out one of my favorite Celine Dion songs, but I was glad that segment only lasted a mere 10 minutes. I don't think I could have taken anymore of Kurt's creepy Finn.

THR hit the ground running at the Tribeca Film Festival, and they've been busy finding out what the stars won't be doing in the near future.
First up, Eric Bana, who is in the Big Apple to promote his latest thriller "Deadfall" won't be wearing blue suede shoes anytime, unless it's for his own sartorial reasons. Last fall, the actor was attached to play Elvis Presley in "Elvis & Nixon" opposite in Danny Huston as the President with Cary Elwes making his directorial debut. The project centers on a Dec. 21, 1970, visit that Presley paid to Nixon at the White House, which was all initiated by The King after he wrote Nixon a six-page letter requesting a visit and suggesting that he be made a "Federal Agent-at-Large" in the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs. Presley brought with him family photos and a Colt 45 pistol as a personal gift to the president.

There's room enough in Hollywood for two Snow White movies, but two movies about porn star Linda Lovelace may be one too many. So says Malin Akerman, who was set to star as Lovelace in Matthew Wilder's Inferno ... which has had trouble getting off the ground after Amanda Seyfried began shooting rival movie Lovelace first. "It's been one of those doomed films that I absolutely love and totally believe in ... I would hope and love for it to go, but now this other movie is coming on that Amanda Seyfried did, and I kind of feel like, 'Shit, we should have been on that, we should have done it.'" The irony? Inferno would have shot first back in 2010 ... if original star...

In a bit of déjà vu, another star abruptly exited a Linda Lovelace biopic yesterday. Is Demi Moore’s departure from Lovelace simply a bit of bad timing or a signal of something more cosmic? Could Lovelace be following the same troubled path as Inferno, the competing biopic that had to replace Lindsay Lohan with Malin Akerman? Is there a curse on the house of Lovelace?

The ongoing battle of the Lovelace biopics has obviously entered its next phase: co-star casting. Yesterday, we brought word of the Amanda Seyfried-starring Lovelace grabbing a few actors and now competing project Inferno (featuring Malin Akerman as Linda) is firing back, roping in Adam Goldberg, Harold Perrineau and Sasha Grey.Goldman will play Harry Reems, the porn star who worked with Lovelace (then Linda Boreman) on the infamous Deep Throat film that rocketed her to skin flick superstardom, which she briefly embraced before renouncing her former career and writing memoir Ordeal about her tribulations.Perrineau, meanwhile, is on as Sammy Davis Jr, who was Lovelace’s lover for a while. Grey’s role is not specified, but after switching from her own porn world to mainstream acting with Steven Soderbergh’s The Girlfriend Experience, Grey will no doubt serve as a key consultant on any raunchier material.Matthew Wilder...

If 2012 is the battle of the Snow White movies, it looks like 2013 may be the smuttier war between porn biopics of the infamous Linda Lovelace. Hot on the heels of "Lovelace" shoring up their cast with Demi Moore and Adam Brody, "Inferno" has fired back with casting of its own. To bring you back up to speed, this is the project with Malin Akerman as Lovelace, Matt Dillon as her husband Chuck Traynor and Paz De La Huerta in a supporting role. Well, Variety reports a few more names have been confirmed, with Adam Goldberg, Harold Perrineau and former porn star Sasha Grey all boarding the project, written and directed by Matthew Wilder. Goldberg will take the role of Harry Reems, the infamous co-star of the notorious "Deep Throat," while Perrineau (best known as Michael from "Lost") will attempt to channel Lovelace's lover, none other than Sammy Davis Jr. As for Grey,...

Lovelace, Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman's Linda Lovelace biopic starring Amanda Seyfried, has added some more star power to its ranks, thereby ramping up its lead over Matthew Wilder's Lovelace flick, Inferno, in the "classy" competition.
According to Deadline, Lovelace has recently added Eric Roberts as lie detector expert Nat Laurendi, Adam Brody as Deep Throat co-star Harry Reems, and Demi Moore as feminist icon Gloria Steinem (I can't wait to see that).
Of the two competing films about the ill-fated 1970s porn star, Lovelace boasts the more impressive cast. Besides Seyfried as the title character and the new big names, the film also features Hank Azaria as Deep Throat director Gerard Damiano, James Franco as Hugh Hefner and Peter Sarsgaard as Lovelace's abusive first husband, Chuck Traynor.
Also aboard this off-color trip to the '70s are Wes Bentley, Sharon Stone, Robert Patrick, Bobby Cannavale, Chris Noth and Juno Temple.

[1] Matthew Wilder's Inferno was the Linda Lovelace biopic we heard about first, but it seems like Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman's Lovelace is the one that's moving full speed right now. Amanda Seyfried and Peter Sarsgaard were cast [2] as the titular porn star and her husband Chuck Traynor in early November, with Sharon Stone signing on [3] to play Lovelace's mother just a couple of weeks later. Then last month, Wes Bentley, Juno Temple, Hank Azaria, Bobby Cannavale, Chris Noth, Robert Patrick, and James Franco all [4] boarded [5] the picture as well. Now Demi Moore, Adam Brody, and Eric Roberts have become the latest to join the drama, which is based on Eric Danville's book The Complete Linda Lovelace. More details after the jump. Lovelace follows the life of the adult film actress, who got into the business as a young woman when she met Traynor, a pornographer, and...

Hank Azaria, Bobby Cannavale, Chris Noth and Robert Patrick have all been cast in the film Lovelace and will join Amanda Seyfried who was previously cast in the title role. They also join Peter Sarsgaard who is playing her husband Chuck Traynor, and it's looking like James Franco will be playing Hugh Hefner in the film as well. He was originally in talks to take on the role of Traynor.
According to Deadline "Azaria will play Jerry Damiano, director of Lovelace’s iconic film Deep Throat; Cannavale and Noth will play the film’s financiers Butchie Peraino and Anthony Romano, respectively; and Patrick will play Lovelace’s father." There are a couple biopics about famed porn actress Linda Lovelace in the works, so let’s not get confused. Lovelace isn’t the one that was supposed to star Lindsay Lohan but then picked up Malin Ackerman because Lindsay Lohan is Lindsay Lohan; that one is the Matthew Wilder-directed Inferno. Lovelace will be directed by Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman (Howl), and has Amanda Seyfried replacing the originally-rumored Kate Hudson as the titular performer. I’ve seen these two movies have actors that are appearing in one being attributed to the other or downright get referenced as being the same film before, so I want to be clear. Now that we got that out of the way, let’s look at the casting news. Way back during this project’s humble beginnings, James Franco was rumored as being the choice to play Chuck Traynor, a pornographer and Lovelace’s longtime husband. That...

[1] Armie Hammer has been working his clean-cut golden boy looks to his advantage in The Social Network, J. Edgar, and the upcoming Mirror, Mirror, but the latest addition to his slate will see him transforming into a bit more of a "badass." Hammer will bulk up and shave his head to star with Eric Bana in By Virtue Fall, a "gritty drama" about an Atf agent (Hammer) who gets framed for corruption and serves time into a maximum security prison. Once out, he's determined to get revenge on his former partner (Bana), whom he blames for destroying his life. The project marks the directing debut of Up in the Air co-writer Sheldon Turner, who also penned this script. Tyler Shields, the shock jock of photography, has grown in relevance since his controversial photo shoots involving (frequent muse) Lindsay Lohan being groped (he also shot those series of pics of her as Linda Lovelace for Matthew Wilder's "Inferno"), Mischa Barton eating raw meat (he told her you could only get salmonella and E-Coli from chicken. He was wrong—you can get it from any raw meat) and "Glee" star Heather Morris sporting a black eye. He always posts at least one picture of himself posing the model. And, to top it all off, Shields shot a guy in the chest at an art gallery (it was planned, the man was wearing a bulletproof vest). So, yeah, Shields knows how to get people’s attention. He’s also directed some music videos, has an agent, and now is getting his first big screen directing assignment on “Final Girl,” a...

Actress Angelina Jolie is known these days as much for her on-screen work as her humanitarian efforts, and her next project will combine both.
THR reports that Jolie is attached to star in the biopic Gertrude Bell, based on the life of the English writer, archaeologist and explorer known for her British Intelligence work in the Middle East during the early 20th Century. Her intelligence work was instrumental in administering the creation of the modern state of Iraq after the end of the Ottoman Empire. Despite traveling and working in a predominantly male world, Bell has been described as "one of the few representatives of His Majesty's Government remembered by the Arabs with anything resembling affection".
Screenwriter Jeffrey Caine (The Constant Gardener) is working to tailor the script for Jolie, which could be directed by Ridley Scott (Gladiator), who is already producing through his Scott Free production company. Reportedly, the...

If there's one thing that the two competing Snow White movies have taught us, it's that if you put Ian McShane in something, we'll be interested in it. But if there's another thing we've learned, it's that if an idea is good enough for one movie studio, it's good enough for two, as evidenced by the two, count'em two, biopics currently ramping up about Linda Lovelace, one of which has just cast Sharon Stone as the porn star's mother.
Collider reports that the "Basic Instinct" star, who is no stranger to harsh dramatic roles, will play Lovelace's mother in "Inferno: A Linda Lovelace Story." Lindsay Lohan had been previously cast to play Lovelace, but now the Matthew Wilder-directed film now boasts Malin Akerman in the lead role.

Sharon Stone has joined the cast of Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman's biopic "Lovelace" at Nu Image reports Yahoo News.
W. Merritt Johnson and Andy Bellin adapted Eric Danville's biography about Linda Boreman's rise to fame as iconic porn star Linda Lovelace of 1972's "Deep Throat," and her subsequent transformation into feminist, anti-porn activist Linda Marchiano.
The film is told through the perspective of three interviewers at various stages of her life. Amanda Seyfried has already been cast as Linda while Stone will play her mother.
There was some confusion as of yesterday as originally it was reported Stone was cast in Matthew Wilder's rival project "Inferno" based on the autobiography "Ordeal" which Lovelace wrote with Mike McGrady.

There was a time when movies being made about "Deep Throat" centered on the Watergate scandal and President Nixon's resignation. Hollywood has flirted with a Linda Lovelace biopic for years now. And why not? It is a great story. Lovelace is your classic tragic porn actress with a troubled background and an awful marriage with a controlling man, who pushed her into making porn films. Instead of just being another lovely piece of flesh, Lovelace went on to star in the film that made porn mainstream: "Deep Throat." And just for extra kicks, that name became associated with Watergate. You can't make that stuff up. Every young starlet has been connected with the role at one time or another. If they haven't, they've ... well, to use the terribly obvious pun, been gagging for it. Everyone wants to be Lovelace and go through the gauntlet of her sad and often violent life. Drugs! Abuse! Porn! Playboy! Anti-porn activism! It sings of Oscar statues before a single frame is shot, doesn't it?...

Deep Throat star Linda Lovelace's story is such an enticing one for filmmakers. So enticing, in fact, that not one but two films are currently bubbling away in development about her life. But both have had problems locking down a cast, particularly for the prickly central role. Now, though, Howl directors Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman's effort, Lovelace, has scored Amanda Seyfried to star.
Lovelace will chronicle the actress' younger years, from her start as a fresh-faced Florida schoolgirl named Linda Boreman to her meeting with future husband Chuck Traynor and his decision to cast her in the controversial 1972 porn pic. Though the role made her an international sex star, she was also horribly victimized by Traynor and others, ending up quitting the business, divorcing him and putting her life on a more stable track until her tragic death in 2002.
