Fatboi Sharif and his DJ Boogaveli are in the middle of a soundcheck for Sharif’s set at the Brooklyn venue Elsewhere’s 15th-anniversary show. Boogaveli blasts Wayne Wonder and Surpriz’s “Enemies” from his DJ deck — I thought he was playing the song to test the venue’s speakers, but they would close Sharif’s performance with the festive 2010 track later that night. Midway through the soundcheck, Sharif resolves that he’ll walk offstage into the crowd during the third song. He jokes about taking his shirt off during...

Jamaal Bowman may pull off a major progressive upset in his Democratic Congressional primary against Rep. Elliot Engel, who has been in Congress sine 1989. While the absentee ballots are still being counted in New York’s 16th district, Bowman sat down with Rolling Stone to discuss how much he loves teaching, first getting into hip-hop, experiencing police violence at a young age, and Donald Trump.
After pontificating on what going viral specifically means, Bowman gives us the behind-the-scenes story of his “just vibing” tweet. “That was the day I got...

Black Pumas needed one more song. At a festival in Austin a few years ago, the then-new soul-rock band had plowed through every number in its repertoire and had been called back for an encore. Desperate for anything to play, lead singer Eric Burton grabbed his guitar and began performing an older tune he’d learned in his youth. “The reaction I got from the crowd was very deep,” he recalls. “And it made me think, ‘I can’t ignore the power of this song and the way it connects with what’s going on.

Jessie Ware's 2012 debut record Devotion was a wonderful, romantic, smooth as hell R&B album; her follow-up, Tough Love, is packed with just as many lovely, dynamic, powerful, restrained, beautiful songs. To put it simply: We are hooked. Vulture spoke to Jessie Ware about the record, working with Miguel, Ed Sheeran, and BenZel, sexy-talking breakdowns, channeling Beyoncé, and how pork buns influence her.How was your wedding? It was wonderful, thank you. It was gorgeous. We really had the best day. It was perfect. What song did you have your first dance to? It was Wayne Wonder, “No Letting Go.” Do you know that song? I probably would if I heard it, but not by name. You know it. When you look it up you'll be like, “Huh?” Basically, we didn’t pick that song. It picked us, shall we say. Why is that? We’ve been together since...

Ten years is a long time. Need proof? How about the fact that in 2003, people were listening to -- and enjoying -- songs by Lumidee and Wayne Wonder that not only sounded exactly the same, but were also horrible. Fortunately the rest of the year's offerings were more acceptable and lasting. To wit: "Crazy In Love" and "In Da Club" would rank as the best singles released in 2013 -- apologies to Daft Punk, Robin Thicke, Bruno Mars and the rest of this year's artists reaching into the 1970s to find the next great pop hit.
Ahead, the 32 songs you loved in 2003.
1. Beyonce, "Crazy in Love"
2. The Black Eyed Peas, "Where Is The Love?"
3. Fountains of Wayne, "Stacy's Mom"
4. Fall Out Boy, "Grand Theft Autumn/Where Is Your Boy"
5. Justin Timberlake, "Cry Me a River"
6. Simple Plan, "Addicted"
7. Kym Marsh, "Come On Over"
8. S Club 8, "Fool No More"
9. Lil Kim feat.

LONDON -- Stephen "Lenky" Marsden was named songwriter of the year for Sean Paul's hit "Get Busy" and the Wayne Wonder hits "Never Leave You" and "No Letting Go" at the American Society of Composers Authors and Publishers' annual U.K. awards ceremony Wednesday. Marsden also picked up the ASCAP prize for song of the year with co-writer Sean Henriques for "Get Busy". BMG Music Publishing Ltd., which had hits with Dido and Coldplay, was named publisher of the year. The awards honor writers and publishers represented by Britain's Performing Right Society for performances on U.S. radio and television. Scottish band Franz Ferdinand won the college award, and England's Goldfrapp picked up the dance award. Film awards went to Phil Collins for Brother Bear, Trevor Jones for The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Patrick Doyle for Calendar Girls, Craig Armstrong for Love Actually and Annie Lennox, Howard Shore and Frances Walsh for "Into the West" from The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. A highlight of the evening saw Petula Clark and Freda Payne celebrate the work of ASCAP songwriter Hal David by performing a medley of his hits, including "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head," "What the World Needs Now", "Alfie" and "A House Is Not a Home".
