Ray Chan, the art director and production designer for Marvel Studios who contributed to Guardians of the Galaxy, three Avengers movies, the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine and more, has died. He was 56.
Chan died Tuesday near his home in Wales, his family announced. No cause of death was divulged.
“Ray truly was one of the best, in so many ways,” they said. “He had an exuberance for life, which was tragically cut short and will be sorely missed. He loved his career and lived a rich and wonderful life, and his memory will live on through all those he knew and the films he helped make happen.”
Chan served as supervising art director on Thor: The Dark World (2013), Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), Doctor Strange (2016) and the Avengers films Age of Ultron (2015), Infinity War (2018) and Endgame (2019).

Charles Osgood, the longtime host of CBS Sunday Morning and the radio program The Osgood File, died today at his home in New Jersey, the network said. He was 91.
His family said that the cause of death was dementia, according to the network where he’d worked for 45 years.
With a folksy demeanor, calming voice and wit, the bowtie-wearing Osgood anchored Sunday Morning from 1994-2016, succeeding its original host, Charles Kuralt. He won a Peabody Award and a pair of Daytime Emmys for the show in the mid-2010s and received the News & Documentary Emmys’ Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017.
“I cannot think of anything that gives me more pleasure than Sunday Morning,” he told an interviewer, “because, first of all, it feels great to be part of something that people love, and I know that they do.”

It’s turning out to be quite a summer for superspies and supercomputers.
A month after the action feast of “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part I”, in which Tom Cruise faced off with an AI supervillain called “the Entity,” comes a very “Mi”-like international espionage thriller with an equally fancy and powerful machine.
“Heart of Stone” stars Gal Gadot as Rachel Stone, an agent for an elite and clandestine intelligence agency called the Charter. Like “Mission: Impossible”, “Heart of Stone” hits glamorous global destinations and features lengthy actions sequence including a wingsuit skydive.

The MCU made Oscar history this year as Angela Bassett earned the franchise its first-ever acting nomination for her supporting turn as Queen Ramonda in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” This was the sequel to “Black Panther,” which was the first film in the franchise to reap a Best Picture bid.
So often, the MCU is consigned to visual effects and sound categories at the Academy Awards. For both “Black Panther” movies to break through in key categories (plus double wins for Ruth E. Carter‘s costume design), is remarkable. Still, though, the artist and filmmaking talent on show in the MCU is often overlooked purely because they are superhero movies. With that in mind, here are five Oscars categories where the MCU deserves more attention.

Popular opinion says that Avengers: Age of Ultron didn't live up to its promise. Without a doubt, there's one area where the movie surpassed the first franchise's installment - and it's production design. Thanks to the courtesy of Atomhawk Design, we have a much better look at the many concepts from the movie, like the concept art of The Avengers Tower, the hallicarier, rescue carriers, the secret Hydra base in Sokovia and even detailed look at Ultron's detonator (also known as "the key). Charles Wood, production designer at Atomhawk, has also commented about the company’s unique approach in creating designs and overcoming obvious obstacles. "The challenge for most designs is making them look cool and original but that wasn't the challenge here. The real challenge was to create a rest stop and a contrast to the rest of the movie. Something familiar and human in contrast to the chaos...

The guys over at comicbook.com were able to get an exclusive with production designer Charles Wood, whose work for Marvel includes; Thor: The Dark World, Guardians Of The Galaxy, Avengers: Age Of Ultron, Doctor Strange, and the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War. While a few of these movies were not the best submissions by Marvel, all of them looked beautiful and two of them stick out in my mind -- Doctor Strange and Guardians Of The Galaxy. Both of these films had intricate and visually appealing sets, think of the Sanctum Sanctorum or the psychedlic ride through alternate dimension in Doctor Strange, and the interstellar prison or the Knowhere scene in GotG. He does kick arse work, and it was only logical that Marvel would hire him to Infinity War as well.
Wood was asked about the daunting task of creating the Infinity War world after he was handed the script for the forthcoming movie.

While the cast of Avengers: Infinity War continues to grow, some intriguing new details have now surfaced courtesy of the movie’s production designer. Very little is known about the next two Avengers films beyond the fact that Joe and Anthony Russo are shooting them back to back, but we’re now being told that we can expect a visit to some new brand locations.
Asked about the pressures which come with bringing to life the sort of places the Avengers: Infinity War script revolves around, Charles Wood explained that the movie is going to end up taking both us and the characters (presumably members of The Avengers) to, “many, many, many new worlds.”
“Any time you turn that page on this script, you’re kind of staggered, blown away, terrified by what’s in front of you. I think rather like Doctor Strange, you’ll find this film, it’s not regurgatative,...

Avengers: Infinity War Will Apparently Take Us To "Many New Worlds" In The Marvel Cinematic Universe
Shooting is said to have already started on Avengers: Infinity War, and when ComicBook.com had the opportunity to catch up with Production Designer Charles Wood, they asked him about what we should expect from the movie. Needless to say, it sounds like it's going to even bigger than we all imagined! "Any time you turn that page on this script, you're kind of staggered, blown away, terrified by what's in front of you," Wood said in regards to seeing the sort of environments he and his team are tasked with making a reality on the big screen. "I think rather like Doctor Strange, you’ll find this film, it’s not regurgatative, yeah? What I’m trying to say, is, there are many, many, many new worlds to see in this film." Does that confirm theories we'll see Earth's Mightiest Heroes pay a visit to outer space? While Thanos arriving on Earth seems likely,...

World building doesn’t get more varied or adventurous than in Damien Chazelle’s front-running musical, “La La Land,” Denis Villeneuve’s ethereal alien thriller, “Arrival,” Jon Favreau’s inventive Disney hybrid, “The Jungle Book,” Scott Derrickson’s Magical Mystery Tour, “Doctor Strange,” and Martin Scorsese’s spiritual passion project, “Silence.”

With “Doctor Strange,” Marvel entered the supernatural realm for the first time, requiring a new set of VFX tricks for Benedict Cumberbatch’s arrogant wizard. They not only found inspiration in “Doctor Strange” comic book artist Steve Ditko’s psychedelic tropes but also Christopher Nolan’s Oscar-winning “Inception” effect of bending and folding buildings.
“It was about creating new worlds and magic, going from simple ring shields to portals opening to other dimensions to entire cities being bent to time going backwards,” VFX production supervisor Stephane Ceretti told IndieWire.
There are three major dimensional worlds — Mirror Dimension, Dark Dimension and Astral Realm — each requiring different looks. And Strange’s introduction was called “Magical Mystery Tour” (with VFX created by Method), a film-within-the-film psychedelic journey, leveraging Ditko’s artwork, for starters, where Strange gets pushed out of his body into worm holes and various kaleidoscopic shapes.

Marvel co-president Louis D'Esposito has continued to post behind-the-scenes pics from the set of the company's "Doctor Strange" movie on social media feeds. His surprising revelation today is a shot of new Spider-Man actor Tom Holland visiting the set.
The shot has Holland, D'Esposito and director Scott Derrickson posing during a break in filming, but it's unlikely that Holland has a cameo in character in the film itself - rather he's just swinging by. Other shots from D'Esposito are also below including sets that are rumored to be a part of the inner sanctum of The Ancient One. The film itself opens late 2016.

Will Marvel’s Doctor Strange feature an appearance from the Webhead? While it’s certainly a possibility, chances are Tom Holland was just dropping by to check out the set with executive producer Louis D’Esposito, who posted the images to Twitter. They photos also include the man who we recently found out had a hand in writing the movie’s script, C. Robert Cargill, as well as cinematographer Ben Davis and production designer Charles Wood, who both worked on Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Following an initial set snap a few days back, we also get another look at what is believed to be Stephen Strange’s (Benedict Cumberbatch) base of operations, the Sanctum Santorum.

Even though we've already seen footage of stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Chiwetel Ejiofor on set, Disney just sent us a press release announcing the start of production on Marvel's Doctor Strange. They also confirm the major cast members, which include Cumberbatch, Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, and Michael Stuhlbarg along with Mads Mikkelsen and Academy Award® winner Tilda Swinton. It's a mostly boilerplate release, but there are a few little things worth pointing out. First up, the official description of the movie:
“Doctor Strange” follows the story of neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a horrific car accident, discovers the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions.
And there's also a full list of the main behind-the-scenes talent involved with the movie:
Director Scott Derrickson’s creative team also includes director of photography Ben Davis, B.S.C. (Marvel’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy”); production designer...

"We're fighting an army of robots... and I have a bow and arrow," says Jeremy Renner in one of two new TV spots for Avengers: Age of Ultron as the level of self awareness in the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues. We've all said as much, but if you take a look at the list of "13 Fun Facts" Disney released when it comes to the new film it sounds like #3 addressed this issue. Howc By changing his bow from black to maroon of course! That and new arrow tips, but I think we all know the color of the bow is the most important. On top of that, Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) gets "stretchy pants", Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) gets new fighting batons, Captain America's (Chris Evans) shield now comes back to him and there's more, just see below. Hulk got a welcome upgrade to his wardrobe with the addition of stretchy pants,...

They've done what they've had to do to survive on AMC's The Walking Dead, brining hope and despair to palpable life on the small screen with gritty realism every week. Covered in grime, splattered in blood, and trudging down the sun-baked backroads and brush-bordered trails this season, the stellar cast and crew of The Walking Dead have paid their dues and then some, and now they're getting a tip of the cap in return with seven nominations for the 41st Annual Saturn Awards.
Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus, Emily Kinney, Melissa McBride, Chandler Riggs, and Andrew J. West have all earned nominations, with the TV series itself receiving one as well. The Art Directors Guild handed out their 2015 awards and outside of a Marvel Studios win in the Fantasy Film category, there weren't many surprises. "The Grand Budapest Hotel," arguably the Oscar frontrunner, took home the Period Film honor. "Budapest's" studio stablemate "Birdman" won the Contemporary Film award and "Guardians of the Galaxy" beat out "Interstellar" and "Into the Woods" in the Fantasy Film category. Notable TV winners included "Game of Thrones," "True Detective," "Silicon Valley" and the 86th Academy Awards. The night also featured Anne Hathaway presenting the Guild's Cinematic Imagery Award to Christopher Nolan and George Clooney handing Production Designer Jim Bissell ("E.T.," "300," "Good Night, and Good Luck.") the Lifetime Achievement Award. Presenters on hand included Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones ("The Theory of Everything"), Julie Bowen ("Modern Family"), Tony Hale ("Veep"), Mayim Bialik ("The Big Bang Theory") and Margo Martindale ("The Americans"). Just below are the 2015 Art Directors Guild nominations and as much as it may seem like Nightcrawler and American Sniper are currently bathing in nominations from all corners, what other contemporary films were going to get nominationsc The period category, however, does consist of a few alternatives that weren't nominated such as Mr. Turner and Fury and I can't help but wonder what the guild would have done in attempting to categorize Noah... Is it a period film or a fantasy filmc I'll leave that one alone... Perhaps one of the more surprisingly absent nominees is Maleficent. You could say there were too many special effects, but then again, isn't that what today's fantasy films primarily arec That said, just below are the nominations for contemporary, period and fantasy films and you can find my current Production Design predictions right here. I see this one as The Grand Budapest Hotel's to lose,...

The Art Directors Guild has announced nominees for the group's 19th annual awards, and films that have come on strong as of late like "American Sniper" and "Nightcrawler" were in the mix along notable extravagant displays in the period and fantasy categories. However, there were a few missing pieces. In the fantasy arena, both "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" and "Maleficent" came up short, while "Exodus: Gods and Kings" missed in the period department. The most shocking snub might be "Mr. Turner's" in that field, however. (And it would have been great to see "Snowpiercer" get some love here, but, alas.) As a reminder, the Guild implemented a new rule this season. Period films must now have the majority of sets and locations designed to portray a time period at least 20 years prior to the present awards year. Contemporary films, therefore, must have the majority of...

One of the first things we saw as we stepped out of our bus on the Shepperton Studios lot outside of London was a golf cart carrying Captain America. Suffice it to say, spending a day with The Avengers is very strange. While I've attended set visits for many of the films that make up the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I did not visit the set of "The Avengers." I've met each of the individual members of the team, many of them in costume as these characters, but there's something different about being on a set with all of them at once. Between now and the May release of "Avengers: Age Of Ultron," the mega-sequel to one of the biggest films of all time, we'll have a number of reports from the set, where I joined a large group of journalists to not only watch a key scene from the film being shot,...

In Marvel's new "Guardians of the Galaxy," Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) cruises the galaxy in style, and now he wants to give fans a tour of his ship, the Milano. One thing that none of the million-dollar pads seen on MTV's "Cribs" ever had was an intergalactic spaceship, and, while the Milano may no longer be state-of-the-art, Star-Lord can still outmaneuver the bad guys and check his Twitter feed. Just don't bring a blacklight. Peep this: The video is good for a quick laugh, but also highlights the film's practical elements, which may be overshadowed by some of the CG effects. The Milano (named after "Who's the Boss?" and "Charmed" star Alyssa Milano) looks like an actual, working spaceship -- although one that's seen quite a bit of action -- courtesy of production designers Charles Wood, Ravi Bansal, Ray Chan and set decorator Richard Roberts. In theaters now, "Guardians of the Galaxy" also stars Zoe Saldana,...

It’s the end of the world as we know it. Or so the popcorn films of the summer thus far would have us believe. From the knock ‘em, sock ‘em eyesore that was Transformers: Age of Extinction to the poetic Snowpiercer, this summer’s movies have recurrently reinforced that we are living in a dog-eat-dog, every-man-for-himself society and thankfully this is not the case in Guardians of the Galaxy, the multiplexes’ savior from the otherwise humorless and joyless fare on offer. I've had several people ask me now if I think "Guardians Of The Galaxy" is the best of the Marvel movies so far. That's a hard question to answer, because I think there are many different things that I look for in a film, and none of the Marvel movies scratch the exact same itch. What's safe to say is that "Guardians Of The Galaxy" is the most charming Marvel movie so far. The primary ensemble (Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, and Vin Diesel) is perhaps the most winning group of characters they've introduced in any of these movies so far, and while it's hard to figure out their dynamic when you just read their names together or even in clips, by the end of the film, this is a family that I would happily follow through any number of movies. I'm not sure I've ever seen...

Even though Guardians of the Galaxy has been shooting for almost two weeks already, Marvel and Disney have just sent out a press release making it official. This movie is going to kick so much ass! There are a lot of people that aren't familiar with this comic book property, but they are going to flip when they see what's in store for them! The stuff shown at Comic-Con was so freakin' cool!
I think the newest piece of info to come out of this press release is confirmation that Glenn Close is playing Nova Prime in the film.
