Exclusive: Earlier this morning, Amazon revealed that it was laying off several hundred employees across Prime Video and Amazon Studios as part of a review of its business.
Details have emerged about the cuts, which were described by one source close to the company as a “bloodbath”. Senior execs let go include Nancy Cotton, Arturo Interian, Marcy Kaplan, Chris Castallo and Uri Fleming across different divisions.
Most of the exits are a result of the integration of Lindsay Sloane’s MGM Scripted Television team alongside MGM+ and the Barry Poznick-led MGM Alternative TV under Chris Brearton, VP, Corporate Strategy, Prime Video and Studios. Sloane and Poznick’s teams will continue to work closely with the studios teams in developing for Prime Video and also will continue to produce for outside networks and streamers.

MGM+ has renewed sci-fi mystery thriller series Beacon 23 for a second season. The eight-episode season 2 will premiere on the streaming service in April. The news is not a surprise. The series already had been renewed by Spectrum and AMC, where it originally had been greenlit, and MGM+ is now formally committing to air it.
Starring Stephan James and Lena Headey in Season 1, Beacon 23, based on the best-selling book by Hugh Howey, is created and executive produced by Zak Penn.
Set in the farthest reaches of the Milky Way, Season 1 followed Aster (Headey), a government agent, and Halan (James), a stoic ex-military man, whose fates became entangled after they found themselves trapped together inside one of many Beacons that served as a lighthouse for intergalactic travelers. In Season Two, Beacon 23 is now little more than a prison with Aleph onboard, and The Artifact provides more questions than answers.

After saying goodbye to countless cast members over the last few years, Luke Mitchell is joining the cast of Chicago Med.
We previously reported that Dr. Charles would be getting a blast from the past, and thanks to Deadline's exclusive, we can reveal it will be in the form of Mitchell's Dr. Mitch Ripley.
Don't get too attached to that name because the outlet states that there's a possibility the name could change.
Okay then.
As of now, Mitchell is on board in a recurring capacity, but there is the option to expand him to series regularly.
That, we guess, will be based on the reaction to the arc being cooked up involving the actor.

MGM+ is eschewing a “one size fits all approach” to global expansion, the streamer’s bosses have said, as they detail international strategy several months after rebranding.
Following the lead of the U.S. platform, the Amazon-owned streamer changed from Epix to MGM+ International earlier this year, at which point it struck a content deal with Lionsgate for key European territories.
MGM+ Head Michael Wright and Chris Brearton, VP Prime Video Studios Corporate Strategy, said the rollout outside the U.S. will be tailored to each nation.
“We don’t believe in local ‘one size fits all’ programing we believe every territory has individual needs,” Brearton told Content London. “This is less than a year old and the results have been extraordinary. We have accelerated our expansion because of that.”
Wright detailed international strategy, pointing out that rights and content commissioning will differ in different territories, with more rollouts beyond...

Paul McGann takes on extra business while Tara Fitzgerald brings sparkle to this low-key tale of a funeral director who gets mixed up with a local gangster
This low-key thriller, set in the late 1950s-early 60s judging by the costumes, harks back to the regional British crime flicks of that period, the sort of movies where penny-stakes gangsters and spivs in shiny suits clash over who will control the ration-card black market. Writer-director Michael Wright clearly has a yen for this milieu and takes care to get the argot right in this tale of Arthur Morel (Paul McGann), a reticent funeral director who gets mixed up with local hoodlum Finlay (Roger Barclay) in a northern town. Finlay needs a bit of help burying the excess bodies his shady business generates, or “loose ends” as he describes them.

MGM+ has picked up Zak Penn’s “Beacon 23” after the series’ fate was left to speculation last year due to the shutdown of Spectrum Originals in 2022.
The sci-fi series is scheduled to premiere globally on Nov. 12 on the streamer.
Originally announced as a Spectrum-amc Networks joint production, the series was left hanging in the balance after Charter unveiled its plans to slowly transition out of scripted programming, which started with the closure of Spectrum Originals last year. Spectrum renewed the series for a second season ahead of the Season 1 premiere in Aug. 2022.
Created and executive produced by Penn, starring Lena Headey and Stephan James, the sci-fi thriller is said to follow Aster (Headey), a government agent, and Halan (James), a stoic ex-military man, who cross paths when they end up trapped together inside one of the many Beacons in outer space that serve as a lighthouse for intergalactic travelers.

Beacon 23, the sci-fi drama starring Lena Headey and Stephan James, has a new home.
MGM+ has picked up the series, which was originally greenlit by Spectrum Originals and AMC Networks. The Amazon-owned cabler and streamer will launch the series on November 12.
The surprise move comes after Spectrum moved out of original programming and AMC Networks has scaled back its own originals.
The show was left without a home as a result of the Spectrum decision and the move by AMC Networks, which had a second window licensing agreement for the show, to cut costs and take $400M in content write-downs.
It’s the end of a long road for the show, which was originally ordered in 2020. Spectrum and AMC had already renewed the series for a second season in August 2022, a few month into production with The Walking Dead’s Glen Mazzara and Joy Blake, a co-exec producer of The Resident,...
