As well as sequels, remakes, and comic book adaptations, there’s one kind of movie you can feel fairly sure is going to keep popping up at a cinema near you: young adult adaptations. Stories about teenagers are still doing big business in the book trade, and thanks to Harry Potter, Twilight, and The Hunger Games, Hollywood is convinced of the genre’s appeal, too.
A couple of new franchises have already been kicked off – there’s still at least another Divergent sequel on the way, and another Maze Runner sequel – but what’s more interesting is the list of Ya novels that have been optioned and may soon be taking over the box office. Great news from the "Dustlands" series front; progress is steadily being made on the Ridley Scott-led film adaptation of "Blood Red Road," as author Moira Young revealed yesterday! Speaking to Page to Premiere, Young explained that at present, a group of "A-list directors" are busy reviewing the completed first script by Jack Thorne - a BAFTA-winning screenwriter from the U.K. in hopes of securing the right helmer for the project and then moving forward to the business of numbers - "they’ll work up a budget, bring in financing and we’ll be able to move forward," Young explained. As for her part in the process, she said, "I have what’s called 'meaningful consultation.' That means that I read and feed back on script development, have input into the appointment of a director and input into lead casting." Young also shared a rather candid little moment...

Today sees the release of "The Hunger Games," the much anticipated adaptation of the popular young adult novel series about a future in which children are forced to compete in a fight to the death for the entertainment of the upper class, and to help their district fight off starvation. The books have been bestsellers, and Lionsgate have pegged the film to be their own answer to another hugely popular teen-skewing franchise, the vampire romance "Twilight." And it looks as if the gamble has paid off, with most prognosticators pegging the film to open well over $100 million in the U.S. this weekend.
But all things come to an end, and while "The Hunger Games" is only just hitting theaters, sequel "Catching Fire" is already set for release in November 2013, with final "Mockingjay" presumably following another eighteen months or so after that. And when you figure in that "Harry Potter...
