People usually pay attention to those that act in movies, and following that will pay attention to the director and eventually tend to lose interest. Composers and a few others might get special attention from those are into the details behind the scenes, but editors rarely ever seem to get much credit aside from the fact that they have a rather important job. As their title says they are the editor for the film, the one that makes it all nice and polished and is as flawless as possible. Editor Eric Zumbrunnen — whose longtime collaboration with Spike Jonze started in music videos and most recently included Her — got a big laugh during American Cinema Editors' EditFest La. He joked that the stages of editing included " 'It's going to be amazing.'; 'I don't know what I can do with this.' 'What if everyone finds out I'm a fraud?' 'Damn the deadline'; and finally, the 'I'm a genius' point." Saturday at Disney's Frank G. In the lead-up to the 86th annual Academy Awards on March 2, HitFix will be bringing you the lowdown on all 24 Oscar categories with multiple entries each day. Take a few notes and bone up on the competition as we give you the edge in your office Oscar pool! Of all craft categories, Best Film Editing is the one most closely tied to the Best Picture race: nominees from the latter category invariably dominate the former, and as pundits are so fond of reminding everyone, no film has won the top prize without a corresponding editing bid since 1980. That's no quirk or accident, given how heavily editing interacts with script and performance, and though Best Picture no-shows occasionally triumph here (like surprise victor "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" two years ago), that won't be happening this year. Five Best Picture nominees make up the field, and I strongly suspect they'd...

In a mildly interesting turn of events, if below-the-line categories at the Oscars are your thing, occurred last night as Captain Phillips was named the Best Edited Feature Drama by the American Cinema Editors (Ace) at the 2014 Eddie Awards while American Hustle won in the comedy category. Now this doesn't mean anything in the Best Picture race at the Oscars as we're still looking at a battle between 12 Years a Slave and Gravity there, but this does make the Editing race a little more interesting. In the animated category it was Frozen taking the win and 20 Feet from Stardom won for Best Documentary Editing. I've listed the winners below, highlighted in bold red text and updated the Oscar Overture with the wins for American Hustle and Captain Phillips. American Cinema Editors (Ace) today announced nominations for the 64th Annual Ace Eddie Awards recognizing outstanding editing in ten categories of film, television and documentaries. Winners will be revealed during Ace’s annual black-tie awards ceremony on Friday, February 7, 2014 in the International Ballroom of the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
The Ace Eddie Awards is considered an integral precursor to the Oscars. No film has won Best Picture at the Oscars without also having received at least a Best Editing nomination since Ordinary People in 1981. Since the Ace membership boasts a very high crossover within its membership of Academy members, it represents a very accurate bellwether for the eventual Oscar outcome.

Spike Jonze's Her may be competing at the Golden Globes on Sunday as a comedy, but as far as the American Cinema Editors (Ace) are concerned it's a drama as the org announced the nominees for the 2014 Ace Eddie Awards this morning in three categories. Last year these nominations were announced before the Oscars, giving little reason to look at them and add to the speculation as to which films would eventually be nominated for Best Editing at the Oscars. Looking over the list, I must say I'm surprised to see Daniel P. Hanley and Mike Hill's work on Rush didn't make the cut, instead replaced by Mark Livolski's Saving Mr. Banks. I guess editing in all those flashbacks was looked at as impressive. Otherwise, while I haven't touched my Best Film Editing predictions since first posting them, four of my top five were nominated by the Ace...

One of the year's most complex achievements in film editing, I think, is one likely to go unrecognized at Oscar time: Eric Zumbrunnen's meticulous cutting of "Her," which goes a long way toward creating a convincing character and a relationship -- more or less literally -- out of thin air. In the last part of the La Times's excellent "Five Days of 'Her'" series, Zumbrunnen discusses the challenges the film posed, notably the tricky process of replacing a key performance in post-production, as well as the decision over whether or not to feature a physical representation of Scarlett Johansson's Samantha on screen....

‘Her’ movie tops 2013 San Diego Film Critics Awards (Joaquin Phoenix in ‘Her’) The San Diego Film Critics Society has released its list of 2013 nominees and winners. The nominations themselves were quite eclectic, ranging from Best Actress nominee Brie Larson for Short Term 12 to Best Film nominee Gravity. The list of winners, however, tended to be more mainstream. For instance, Warner Bros.’ Spike Jonze-directed Her, starring Joaquin Phoenix as a man who falls in love with a Scarlett Johansson-voiced computer, was chosen as the Best Film of 2013, in addition to receiving honors for Best Original Screenplay (also Spike Jonze) and Best Score (Arcade Fire). Alfonso Cuarón was the Best Director for another Warner Bros. release, Gravity, a 3D space action melodrama about an astronaut and bereaved Mom (Sandra Bullock) who learns that, no matter what, Life Is Worth Living. George Clooney co-stars. Among the other San Diego Film...

Warner Bros. Pictures has moved the release date of Spike Jonze’s already much anticipated romantic drama “Her.” The film will now open in limited release in New York, Los Angeles and Toronto on December 18, 2013, and wide on January 10, 2014. The announcement was made today by Dan Fellman, President, Domestic Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.
The move comes on the heels of strong positive reactions coming out of early screenings. “Her” has also just been announced by the New York Film Festival as its selection for the prestigious Closing Night Gala slot. The date change allows the studio to take full advantage of word of mouth resulting from the Festival screening, placing the film in the key awards consideration corridor and positioning it for its December opening and wider launch in January.
In making the announcement, Fellman stated, “Spike Jonze has created an unconventional love story that is thought-provoking and reflective of our modern age.

Spike Jonze has worked with Absolut Vodka to launch his latest short film, "I'm Here", at the Sundance Film Festival. The 30 minute short film explores the relationship between two robots living in Los Angeles, played by Andrew Garfield and Sienna Guillory. "I'm here" was developed after Absolut reached out to Jonze to make a film, and gave him creative control to create the film he wanted. In addition to the 30-minute film, there are also 30 and 60 second trailers, to be used online and as TV commercials globally.

In the clip, Sendak talks about how the book took a long time to be recognised as a piece of work that would capture kids’ imagination everywhere. It's been awhile since we heard anything regarding Spike Jonze's adaptation of Where the Wild Things Are, and after the release date was pushed back a year, folks started to spew rumors that Warner Bros. didn't like Jonze's version of the flick, how it was "too adult", how test screenings were making kids cry, how there were reshoots ... and all that nonsense.
