Vampires and werewolves are big business in mainstream media, with a veritable feast of TV shows and movies being dedicated to the mythical creatures across the decades. So when something comes along that slots straight into the mainstream zeitgeist with its gothic visuals and sexy vampires fighting pesky swearwolves, you know what’s coming next. Yup, sequels and prequels! As mentioned in our previous episode that sunk its teeth into the fun but flawed Underworld from 2003, director Len Wiseman found love with his leading lady, Kate Beckinsale. And, if you’re being massively cynical, you could perhaps suggest that their star-struck Hollywood romance is one of the main reasons a follow-up to the first movie was green-lit. Or maybe it was the decent box-office, cool world-building or maybe even the lashings of S&m clad characters? The first movie, as we discussed previously, is flawed and far from perfect but you know what,...

Elden Ring puts forth a lot of mysteries for players to deduce in FromSoftware’s typical cryptic storytelling fashion, and the colossal Fire Giant, who has an eye in his torso for some reason, is one of these mysteries. The Surtr-inspired boss is apparently the last of the giants after the war against them, but beyond this, their lineage isn’t expanded on much.
However, the game also hints at a far more ancient and somehow even larger breed of giants, with their remnants scattered chillingly across the Mountaintops of the Giants. The lore doesn’t explain how they ended up there, and we’ll likely never get to fight them, even in Shadow of the Erdtree.
The Giants Were Of Unbelievably Massive Stature
Just the skull alone is bigger than the Fire Giant, so the entire body would be incomprehensible.

Mythology offers some of the most enduring and rich stories when it comes to epic storytelling. And at the top of the pantheon of mythical figures sits Zeus, the king of the gods in Greek mythology. Throughout Hollywood history, many stars have tried their hands at playing this powerful deity, with varying degrees of success.
Having said that, it makes sense that we should honor the actors who gorgeously portrayed Zeus on screen. Since he is the undisputed leader of Mount Olympus, it is about time he had his own list. Those who have portrayed Zeus on screen have done so with a certain stoicism that is more in line with ancient Greek depictions.

Sony’s video game journey began in 1993 through the amalgamation with Sony Music Entertainment Japan, giving birth to the first PlayStation. Since then, it has become the gold standard in the console business, and eventually in the gaming industry. From Tekken to Uncharted the company has achieved great feats not just in terms of quality but revenue too.
Recently, it conducted a vote to see what’s the fan-favorite game independent of the critics. Turns out, fans’ choice is different from the critics. Until now, the internet believed it was Uncharted 2: Among Thieves that made waves in the video games sector, but the finalists according to the latest votes have cleared the game’s name.

The first reactions to DC Studios’ “Blue Beetle,” starring Xolo Maridueña, are flying in, with early viewers calling the film a “huge surprise.” While some of the reactions quibble with parts feeling shaky or playing things a bit too silly, they mostly praise the film’s action, heart and specific touchstones to Latino culture.
The film, which hits theaters on Aug. 18, follows teenager Jaime Reyes (Xolo Maridueña) and his encounter with an alien relic that attaches to his body, bestowing the adolescent with extraordinary powers. Blue Beetle, notably, is one of the most preeminent Latino superheroes in comic book history. The rest of the “Blue Beetle” cast is predominantly Latino, including Bruna Marquezine, George Lopez, Raoul Max Trujillo, Adriana Barraza, Elpidia Carrillo, Damián Alcázar and Belissa Escobedo, along with Susan Sarandon.

This post contains spoilers for the second episode of "Yellowjackets" season 2.
Well, it finally happened. After a full season spent alluding to potential acts of cannibalism that took place during the Yellowjackets' time in the wilderness, the second season of the hit Showtime series dove right in with a dark feast featuring long-dead Jackie (Ella Purnell) as the main course.
After Shauna's (Sophie Nélisse) ear snack last week, "Yellowjackets" finally broached the topic of cannibalism at the end of the new season's second episode, in a scene that makes the desperate measure seem at once disgusting, divine, and eerily understandable. It's a nearly wordless scene that begins when a strong smell wakes up the girls inside the cabin. They attempted to cremate Jackie's body, and the smell of her charred flesh hits their nostrils like the aroma of a backyard barbecue. "She wants us to," hungry, pregnant Shauna says...

Guillermo del Toro’s three decades of creative work was honored and celebrated at the Museum of Modern Art’s 15th annual Film Benefit on Thursday in New York.
During an evening that featured in-person and video messages from Alejandro Iñárritu, Jessica Chastain, Cate Blanchett, Tilda Swinton, Ewan McGregor, MoMA’s Chief Curator of Film Rajendra Roy and more friends and collaborators alongside a set from Grammy-winning artist H.E.R., the Oscar-winning director delivered a powerful and sentimental opus on his creative vision and love of storytelling.
Highlighting that this was a full-circle moment after bringing Cronos to MoMA 30 years ago, the Pan’s Labyrinth director spoke to the personal impact of movies on him, the beauty of art as mystery and his own style. “One of the purposes of art is to interpret what we know,” he said. “But also, there is a form...

Director Guillermo del Toro is known for the intense originality of his work, on vivid display in Oscar-winning films from Pan’s Labyrinth to The Shape of Water. For his latest, the Netflix animated film Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, he again set a high bar for himself.
“We believe that we should be bold, we should be crazy,” he said during an appearance at Deadline’s Contenders Film: Los Angeles awards-season event. “We should try things that have never been done, push the art.”

Del Toro co-directed the film with Mark Gustafson, the stop-motion animator making his feature directorial debut. It’s a reimagining of the classic tale of woodcarver Gepetto, who carves the boy Pinocchio out of a tree. Gustafson said he responded to the script written by del Toro and Patrick McHale, based on the 19th century original by Carlo Collodi.

We’ve had flesh eaters populating so many cinema screens, it’s sometimes difficult for zombie movies to portray a world wherein zombie movies don’t exist. MexZombies, a horror comedy out of Mexico taking its festival tour now to the Toronto After Dark Film Fest, doesn’t ever try to ignore zombie movies, but instead, treats them as important information for the characters. MexZombies plays to those of us who made our contingency plans after consuming zombie media and maybe kind of secretly hoped we’d be validated when the monsters showed up, making our movie geekdom suddenly incredibly cool and tough.

Clarice Episode 12
In Clarice episode 12, “Father Time,” Agent Clarice Starling (Rebecca Breeds) finally loses her shit and clocks someone, and the series is better off for it. The young agent who rose to the top of a media circus on her first serial killer case has been scrutinized, chastised, hypnotized, and downsized since returning to the field. She’s had to run amok straight into danger just to get a point across which will solve cases. Tonight, Clarice lashes out at everyone, packs her boxes, and runs until her legs give out. It provides the most satisfying episode the series has given so far.
Starling has even had enough of her chosen, as opposed to assigned, therapist. Dr. Renee Li (Grace Lynn Kung), is the very definition of calming. Just a few words from her mouth usually silence the lambs in Clarice’s head. But...

Clarice Episode 11
Clarice, episode 11, “Achilles Heel,” could almost be called the “I-told-you-so” episode. After half a season of knocking down Agent Clarice Starling (Rebecca Breeds) as a rogue, unreliable, dangerous or mentally unbalanced cop, almost every character who got screen time this season gets to say their version of “we should have listened to Clarice.” This bodes well for the investigation, but also for the psyches of her closest acquaintances.
In the last episode, Clarice decided Catherine Martin (Marnee Carpenter) had to face some consequences for her actions. The surviving victim of the serial killer Buffalo Bill took his mother hostage, not entirely intentionally, but functionally enough to warrant observation. Catherine’s mother, the Attorney General Ruth Martin (Jayne Atkinson), is incensed over the idea her daughter is being victimized by the system, especially since she gave strict orders to the agent she forced to go rogue,...

Since early promotion for Wonder Woman 1984, one look has captured everyone’s attention: Diana’s golden suit of armor, with its fantastical set of wings. The Gal Gadot incarnation of Wonder Woman has broken the grimdark doom-and-gloom black leather superhero look from her very first appearance in Batman v. Supermam: Dawn of Justice, and she’s only become more colorful and bright with each successive movie, including Wonder Woman 1984’s rainbow poster aesthetic that showed off the wing-less version of the armor.
Dubbed her Golden Eagle Armor, this look originated in the comics and it’s exciting to see it come to life on the big screen, especially the way Diana sheds the wings so fluidly. It’s the kind of move we often see depicted on the page but is hard to imagine translated to a grounded live-action depiction, but director Patty Jenkins and her team found a way that’s mysterious,...

Guillermo Del Toro has fast become one of my favorite directors. I first caught wind of him through his atmospheric ghost story The Devil’s Backbone, followed up by his theatrical debut of a few years earlier, the unique and touching vampire tale, Cronos. Though I missed Mimic and don’t care to see the Hellboy films, he continues to impress with the likes of Pan’s Labyrinth and the Academy Award-winning The Shape of Water. Crimson Peak, a neo-gothic romance in the classical vein, is no less impressive than the aforementioned films.
Del Toro is a stickler for details. He has read all the classic gothic romance novels as well as their precursors. He knows the tropes and characteristics of gothic romance intimately and his attention to detail is such that he simply cannot allow himself to be anything less than absolutely accurate, so there...

Welcome back, readers! We have another edition of our From Streams to Screams series we’ll be running throughout the month of October. Since there are thousands of genre films out there on a variety of digital platforms, I’ve gone ahead and put together this list of 18 fang-tastic vampire movies that genre fans should enjoy watching this Halloween season, including a great mix of classic films and some new genre offerings as well. And while I generally try to avoid including television series, I would be remiss if I didn’t include the original Dark Shadows here, especially since Hulu currently has all 26 seasons streaming on their platform. Happy streaming, everyone!
