Life after The Beatles for legendary singer-songwriter John Lennon and wife Yoko Ono in New York City is the focus of Kevin MacDonald’s latest documentary, One to One: John & Yoko.
The Scottish filmmaker, coming off his fashion doc High & Low: John Galliano, recalls Lennon in 1972 performing his final full-stage performance, the One to One benefit concert, at New York City’s Madison Square Garden, with Ono at his side.
Directed by Macdonald (Whitney, Touching the Void, The Last King of Scotland), One to One features new materials like remixed concert audio produced by Sean Ono Lennon, newly restored footage and personal archives like phone calls and home movies recorded and filmed by Lennon and Ono. Besides earning an Oscar for One Day in September, MacDonald also executive produced the award-winning documentaries Senna and The Rescue.

This post contains spoilers for the latest episodes of "Doctor Who."
It turns out love really is all you need. Well, love and a Time Lord willing to fight off the spirit of music through a delightfully campy song battle that sees literal musical notes fill the air. The showdown between the Fifteenth Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa), Ruby (Millie Gibson), and the chaotic being known as Maestro (Jinkx Monsoon) in the new season's second episode might be one of the goofiest things that's happened on "Doctor Who" recently -- and it's not even the most over-the-top part of the episode. "The Devil's Chord" takes some deliciously weird risks, the biggest of which is centering its drama on "characters" who aren't exactly historical figures yet: The Beatles.

The Beatles have released their final song as a band, “Now And Then,” with the late John Lennon’s voice.
Over the summer, Paul McCartney announced the new track, which feature lyrics written and sung by Lennon before he died in 1980.
The creation of this song started in 1994 when Lennon’s widow, Yoko Ono, gave McCartney two cassettes that Lennon recorded at home in the 70s. McCartney, Ringo Starr and George Harrison played around with the recordings, but because of background noise from traffic and television, the tape was unusable. McCartney still held onto hope that one day, they would be able to figure out how to eliminate the background noise and focus on Lennon’s singing, which brings us to today.
Using AI technology, McCartney and Starr were able to extract just Lennon’s vocals and incorporate them into the track. McCartney detailed how they used the technology that...

Humane Society International and our partner organizations together constitute one of the world’s largest animal protection organizations-backed by 11 million people. Hsi works to protect all animals-including animals in laboratories, farm animals, companion animals, and wildlife-and our record of achievement demonstrates our dedication and effectiveness. With the support of our advocates and donors, we have advocated for strong legislation to protect animals. For example, in 2009 we helped achieve a European Union ban on trade in seal products, a major step toward ending the annual commercial seal slaughter in Canada. We work with local animal organizations in countries all over the world to provide direct, hands-on care to animals in need and spread the culture of compassion. Our campaigns strike at the root of problems affecting animals by providing the tools and resources to prevent animal suffering both now and in the future.

George Harrison’s son, Dhani, grew up surrounded by legendary musicians. Harrison had many friends in the industry who would visit often, and Dhani got to know many stars that the average person could only dream of meeting. Reflecting on his childhood, Dhani said it was “mindbending” to see so many rock stars just casually hanging out in his house.

George Harrison was friends with many classic rock stars. In addition to the other members of The Beatles, Harrison was also close with the members of The Traveling Wilburys, which included Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, and Jeff Lynne. He was also close friends with guitarist Eric Clapton.
Since he worked closely with these excellent musicians, they often recorded and rehearsed at his home studio.

For Mary McCartney, directing the enthralling documentary If These Walls Could Sing on the history of London’s Abbey Road studio wasn’t just as a tip of the hat to her father Paul McCartney’s celebrated career, but also to her own life virturally growing up there, watching musical history being made. And although Dad participates as one of the interviewees, this is not just a story of The Beatles, but rather an eye- and ear-popping tale of a place where musical magic, on just about every level, was made, and continues to be made. The title tells it all as Mary McCartney’s splendid documentary, which premiered at Telluride last September and is now available on Disney+, covers the waterfront of Abbey Road’s 90 years.

More than ever, rock stars were TV stars in 2023 — in the form of subjects for television documentaries — and so were their brethren in pop, hip-hop, K-pop and Latin music. Some of these TV films or docuseries were vanity projects used to promote new albums, of course; others started off as “making of” projects and ended up catching a star in a moment of real psychological crisis. It wasn’t all cinema verité; historical overviews capturing the full breadth of an artist’s career or even a genre still had their place in the pop-doc landscape.

Paul McCartney disappeared from public view in the waning days of The Beatles. The bassist, once called an idiot by a musician who covered one of his songs, had long since proven his songwriting chops, but he felt lost as his band disintegrated. Yet the band was still technically together when Paul threw one of his worst tantrums as a Beatle in front of two journalists sent to find him.

The release of Abbey Road in the early fall of 1969 happened just after John Lennon announced his intention to leave The Beatles. Paul fought to keep the band together throughout 1969, to no avail. The band officially called it quits in early 1970.

When Paul McCartney was a teenager, his mother, Mary, died. He has often spoken about her death and the way it impacted his family and, later on, his music. McCartney said he also felt guilty for years after she died. He shared the behavior that wracked him with guilt whenever he thought about it.

It was impossible to escape The Beatles, especially for those who lived in the U.K. and the U.S. Like many musicians, The Beatles influenced Elton John, and he remembers where he was and which song he listened to when he first heard the fab four.

There are plenty of fascinating stories behind the song titles for Paul McCartney’s music. They’re often based on his family, his friends, or just something he pulled out of the blues. One song he released with Wings was based on something his daughter would say to him when he was overly affectionate.

Paul McCartney often names songs after the people he loves. There are many songs named after his first wife, Linda, and dozens of other love songs about the women in his life. In an interview with his website, McCartney discussed the track “One More Kiss” from Red Rose Speedway, the second album he made with Wings. The former Beatle said it came from his daughter trying to push him away while he was being affectionate.

The burgeoning boy band, who just released their debut album Please Please Me only two weeks before, performed at the all-boys Stowe boarding school on April 4th, 1963. While the blaring and relentless screams of adoring female fans had yet to fully constitute Beatlemania, they still garnered an outpouring of excitement from the adolescent boys who watched them.
The recording was made by then 15-year-old Stowe student John Bloomfield, a growing and self-professed tech nerd experimenting with reel-to-reel tape recording. “I would say I grew up at that very instant,” Bloomfield told Front Row, with whom he first shared the tape. “It sounds a bit of an exaggeration, but...

Paul McCartney said his single favorite aspect of The Beatles‘ “Lady Madonna” is the dark recurring phrase, “See how they run.” The line is more complex than anyone can imagine and comes from a subconscious place inside Paul. The singer-songwriter has always known how to juxtapose light and dark, good and bad, in his songs with minimal effort.
Paul McCartney | Tony Evans/Timelapse Library Ltd./Getty Images Paul McCartney based ‘Lady Madonna’ on the Virgin Mary and his mother
In The Lyrics: 1956 to the Present, Paul wrote that his mother’s death is something he never got over. He was only fourteen when Mary McCartney died of breast cancer. So, he knows that a song that depicts a “very present, nurturing mother” has got to be influenced by a similar sense of loss, just as “Lady Madonna” does.
“The question about how Lady Madonna manages ‘to feed the rest’ is particularly poignant to me,...

Paul McCartney and Beatles bandmate John Lennon had more in common than their love of early rock ‘n’ roll music. Both were young when their mothers died. When John’s mom died, he sought Paul’s advice and asked his friend a heart wrenching question about his experience. Years earlier, Paul’s mother spoke some heartbreaking words on her deathbed that seemed to predict his greatness.
Paul McCartney | Chris Walter/WireImage Paul McCartney’s songs delivered incredible success with The Beatles and beyond
We all know Paul and John formed a dynamic duo in The Beatles. Their fruitful songwriting partnership lasted the better part of a decade and led the Fab Four to incredible success. Music that came later would look drastically different without some of the songs John and Paul wrote together.
Paul’s trend of writing hits continued after The Beatles as he had several solo songs reach No.

Some Beatles songs came from something someone said. A strange conversation or a passing phrase intrigued John Lennon or Paul McCartney so much that they had to base their songs around it.
The Beatles | Mirrorpix/Getty Images 1. ‘She Said She Said’
According to Rolling Stone, John’s “She Said She Said” began with “bad vibes.” In 1965, The Beatles attended a party in Los Angeles, and actor Peter Fonda showed up with Roger McGuinn and David Crosby of The Byrds. An LSD party commenced. George started having a bad trip and felt like he was dying. Fonda tried consoling him and explained he’d survived a near-fatal surgery as a boy.
According to Beatles Bible, Fonda said, “I told him there was nothing to be afraid of and that all he needed to do was relax. I said that I knew what it was like to be dead because when I...

Paul McCartney said The Beatles‘ “I’ll Follow the Sun” is a “Leaving of Liverpool” song. Swap following the sun with following dreams. Paul did all that, becoming a rock ‘n’ roll star with his band. The Beatles wouldn’t have been as popular if they had never left home.

A line in Paul McCartney‘s first song has made him cringe several times over the years. Despite his feelings on the lyric, “I Lost My Little Girl” is an essential song in Paul’s catalog. He wrote it shortly after his mother died.

Paul McCartney’s daughter, Mary McCartney, has said that her father nearly got “run over” while they were filming on the famous zebra crossing in London.
Mary, who has been a photographer for most of her career, was discussing her new documentary about Abbey Road, which is celebrating 90 years of the recording studios.
The new film, titled If These Walls Could Sing, revisits the studio that Mary spent much of her time growing up in while The Beatles were recording.
During filming of the documentary, Mary told The Mirror how she’d encouraged her father to cross the famous zebra crossing near the studio in St John’s Wood, pictured on the front cover of the Beatles’ Abbey Road album.
However, the recreation resulted in a near accident for Paul.

Mary McCartney, the daughter of music legend Sir Paul McCartney and the late culinary entrepreneur Linda McCartney, who has been a successful businesswoman, has ventured into documentary filmmaking.
Her debut ‘If These Walls Could Sing’ celebrates 90 years of the world-famous London recording studio Abbey Road, where Mary spent a lot of time growing up, watching her parents recording tracks with Wings, the band Paul formed after The Beatles parted ways in 1970, reports ‘The Mirror’.
“I was wondering if it was almost a bit too close to home. I’m a huge documentary watcher. I love them and I think the ones that are successful are the ones where it’s something close to the director’s heart. So, this definitely fits the bill,” she said.

Chicago – 2022 was a year of change and transformation. The former leader of the free world morphed into a horribly photoshopped digital trading card spokesmodel and pitch man. That and a full on spy challenging the DOJ to find the stolen classified documents in a shell game of 3 card monte exactly like a subway car hustler.

The names “Abbey Road Studios” and “McCartney” are so intertwined as to be almost synonymous. The studio, located on the now universally known Abbey Road in north London, is where Paul McCartney and his bandmates recorded most of their albums, eventually naming their seventh after the road itself.
Now a new McCartney is making her mark on the place. Photographer turned filmmaker Mary McCartney, who also happens to be Paul’s eldest daughter, has made her directorial feature debut with a new documentary, “If These Walls Could Sing,” which is set to drop on Disney+ on Jan. 6.
McCartney sat down with Variety at the iconic studio itself to discuss her move into filmmaking, her earliest memories of Abbey Road and whether she has more film projects lined up for the future.
When did you start work on this project?
I started working on this a good couple of years ago in lockdown.

Mary McCartney’s documentary about the legendary home to the Beatles’ and many other stars’ recordings is an enjoyable diversion
Putting her privileged access to good use, Mary McCartney has directed this enjoyable documentary about Abbey Road Studios in London – famously the site of the Beatles’ classic recordings (her dad is Paul of course), but much more besides. McCartney’s film takes us through the history of the building itself.
It was designed to house a symphony orchestra, and its first occupant in 1931 was Edward Elgar conducting the Lso. It looks very different from the way we think of recording studios, small spaces divided from the mixing suite by a pane of glass. In fact two of the studios are huge, where mighty producer George Martin presided over everything from suites accessed by flights of stairs, like going up to the manager’s office from the echoing factory shop floor.

Now available on Disney+, If These Walls Could Sing is a loving documentary on one of the greatest musical achievements in modern history. Initially known as Emi studios, the world’s first custom-built recording studio was rechristened Abbey Road only after The Beatles named an album after what all the musicians who played there called it. Inaugurated with great pomp and circumstance on Nov. 12, 1931, Abbey Road Studios remains the gold standard for platinum selling recording, committed to capturing the sounds of timeless classics of all eras.
“It’s a national treasure, innit,” Oasis’ Liam Gallagher says in If These Walls Could Sing. The documentary was directed by Mary McCartney, no stranger to such company. She was one of the very few photographers to capture the late Queen Elizabeth II in a 2015 special sitting celebrating the “longest-reigning British monarch in more than 1,000 years.”
Mary is also the daughter of rock and roll royalty.

Exclusive: Disney Original Documentary today revealed its next project, a feature documentary on Anthony Madu, the Nigerian boy who became a viral sensation after a video showed him dancing ballet barefoot on a rainy street outside Lagos.
Oscar nominee Matt Ogens and Kachi Benson are directing Madu, which will follow a remarkable course of events that began in 2020 when Anthony’s ballet teacher posted 44 seconds of him performing graceful pirouettes and leaps in that unexpected setting. Madu was just 11 at the time. The brief video won hearts around the world and led to Madu earning a scholarship to study at the 100-year-old Elmhurst Ballet School in the U.K.
The doc announcement came as young Madu readies for an appearance this weekend at Disney’s massive D23 expo in Anaheim, California, where fans will get to see the first footage from the film. The company says Madu, a production of Hunting Lane Films,...

When Mary McCartney was approached by producer John Battsek to make a film about the legendary Abbey Road Studios in London, she didn’t immediately leap at the chance, the way almost any other photographer interested in making the leap into documentary filmmaking might have. It’s not difficult to guess at the reason she might have balked at, and then succumbed to, the idea of making “If These Walls Could Sing,” which premiered at the Telluride Film Festival over the weekend and has been picked up for airing on Disney+.
“I think because of my surname, I get a little bit oversensitive,” says the daughter of Paul McCartney, sitting at a sidewalk-adjacent table in Telluride. “I used to sort of shy away from anything to do with my family, wanting with my photography to be making a name for myself in my own area. I mean, I’ve always...

It’s fair to say that Abbey Road Studios is the most documented recording facility in the world, but only if you count the crosswalk outside. Otherwise, the nine-bedroom mansion turned studio hasn’t really had its day in the cinematic sun, the way that more modest studios like L.A.’s Sound City and Alabama’s Muscle Shoals have. She’s also savvy enough to know that the guy working in the back gluing irreplaceable mid-century microphones back together deserves a few seconds of screen time, too.
