The estate of the late pop star George Michael has revealed plans for the iconic singer to return to the stage as a hologram.
Michael died on December 25, 2016, at the age of 53, due to dilated cardiomyopathy with myocarditis and a fatty liver. Despite his death, Michael’s estate has continued to generate substantial income, and new accounts from his company project a rise in earnings due to the planned hologram performances.
According to official documents filed in the U.K., Michael’s hologram will resume “live public performances” as early as next year, an announcement that has raised questions about the ethics of posthumous concerts.
Michael’s former Wham! bandmate Andrew Ridgeley was enthusiastic about the idea of a return to the stage via hologram. However, Ridgeley admitted he questioned the ethics of using Michael’s likeness and emphasized that any decision would be made in consultation with the estate.

‘Tis the season for yuletide classics of yesteryear to finally reach the top spot on the charts as Wham!’s “Last Christmas” was awarded the U.K.’s Christmas Number One this week, 39 years after the song’s release.

“Last Christmas” by Wham! has made pop history, topping the Christmas chart for the first time since it was released almost four decades ago.
The popular song, written by George Michael when he was a teenager and one half of the pop duo with his schoolfriend Andrew Ridgeley, has been a staple of the Christmas charts ever since, but never made it to the festive number spot before this year.
The song, whose official video you can watch below, was released in the winter of 1984, but was famously held off the number one spot that year by the UK’s charity anthem “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” sung by the collected efforts of Band Aid. At the time, George Michael, who also sang on the charity song, decided to donate all the profits of “Last Christmas” to the Band Aid...

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney recreated the classic ‘Last Christmas’ single cover from British pop duo, Wham to celebrate the holiday season. Reynolds (47) and McElhenney (46) who together own U.K. soccer team Wrexham, styled their hair and outfits to mimic those worn by Wham! stars George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley on the original cover art, reports ‘People’ magazine.
Rob McElhenney then posted the hilarious results to his Instagram on Monday with Reynolds also sharing the image to his own Instagram Stories.
Underneath the pouting black-and-white picture, the pair replaced the names of the pop stars with their own and added the logo of their beloved Wrexham soccer club in the corner of the snap. The post’s caption simply read, “Wrexham!”.
As per ‘People’, the stars also donned leather jackets to stage their own version of the 1983 Wham! studio album Fantastic. Against a red backdrop, the duo posed for the...

It was a few minutes past midnight when Missy Elliott stepped up to the podium at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center and cemented her place in history as the first female hip-hop artist to enter the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She’d spent the past four hours witnessing speeches and performances from acts across the vast spectrum of rock, including Willie Nelson, Sheryl Crow, Elton John, Stevie Nicks, and Olivia Rodrigo. Near the end of her speech, tears started to flow as the gravity of the moment hit her seemingly all at once.

Gen X can thank Wham!’s music manager Simon Napier-Bell for the neon, bold statement t-shirts and a Fila obsession.
Clad in some of the shortest shorts of the 80s, George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley burst onto the scene with Wham!’s upbeat poppy tunes and a new brand of fashion. Napier-Bell said that Michael was the heart and soul of Wham!’s music side, whereas Ridgeley was the one with an eye for fashion.
But when it came to some of the most important fashions that shaped the era, Napier-Bell was behind driving that all the way to MTV.
Wham!’s fashion stemmed from money problems
“There was an early stage when Wham! got their first hit and then we were planning a first tour and they didn’t have any money because they’d signed a terribly bad record deal,” Napier-Bell recounted to Showbiz Cheat Sheet.

Former Wham! band member Shirley Kemp suggested that fans of the late singer George Michael may get the chance to see him again: as a hologram.
Seven years after his death, Michael’s bandmates are feeling inspired by other holographic shows, such as Abba’s, and are toying with the idea of creating their own.
Wham! last performed in 1986 at Wembley Stadium, where they were joined by Sir Elton John. Michael’s last solo performance was in 2012.
The other surviving members of the band, which include Andrew Ridgeley and Helen ‘Pepsi’ DeMacque-Crockett, are on board with Kemp’s idea.
“My thinking would be, ‘Fantastic!’ To have Wham! at its pomp playing live,” said Ridgeley on Newsnight.
He did acknowledge potential ethical challenges that a holographic concert may pose.
“Of course, there are ethical questions. And that decision would be a mutual decision between myself and [Michael’s] estate, should it ever come to it…...

The “Wham!” documentary on Netflix hit me like, well, you can guess.
Wham! was formed in 1982, the year after I was born; by the time I turned four, the pop duo was done. So you’ll forgive me if I lacked some context of the group’s real-time rise to stardom and ultimate split. Enter: Netflix, director Chris Smith (“Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond”), and Andrew Ridgeley’s mom.
When I streamed the self-titled Netflix doc, released on June 17, I didn’t expect much more than 92 minutes of schlock, a few catchy tunes, and maybe a good explanation for the “Choose Life” shirts from 1984’s very 1980s “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” music video.
To my surprise, what we also didn’t get from “Wham!” was much George Michael drama. If that sounds like a major omission, given his various drug charges and one very famous 1998 arrest for...

This breezy and warm-hearted look at the brief but bright career of Wham! Is a perfect slice of summer entertainment. Focused on the friendship between Andrew Ridgeley and George Michael from childhood on up, voiceover from the two of them flows over well-edited archive footage, including home video and more familiar concert film. While Chris Smith’s film doesn’t shy away from Michael’s personal struggles at the time, its main focus is on the fast development of his talent. It also gives Ridgeley his due as a vital part of the band and their success. As is fitting for the bubblegum pop outfit, it fizzes along with plenty of fun details and, of course, all the hits.

The first time Rolling Stone profiled Wham!, the shiniest, prettiest UK pop duo of their day, in 1985, the boys bristled when the reporter asked a common question: What exactly did Andrew Ridgeley do? George Michael said, “He just plays the guitar and has a good time.” Since Wham! records had practically no guitar, fans had to assume that Andrew was having a very good time. But Ridgeley was more diplomatic. He said, “My role is everything people don’t see, because they’re not in pop bands.”

We’re so used to the flotsam and jetsum of angst, bad blood and rancour in the ocean of pop history, that the positive energy of the Wham! documentary feels as welcome as a summer breeze. Chris Smith’s film takes a straightforward but detailed run at the short but impressive partnership between George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley, using a wealth of archive footage narrated in tandem by Ridgeley in the present day and Michael, via archive interviews.
The film is given shape by scrapbooks that Ridgeley’s mum meticulously kept - and it’s rather a shame there’s no archive of her, although Michael’s dad does pop up briefly. Smith employs animation to bring these to life that both adds to the pace of the documentary and acts as a nostalgic nod to the sort of graphics that were used at the time of the band’s success.

Unabashed pop groups with fervid teenage followings tend to get trivialized, at least in the media. They’re dismissed as being slick and calculated and superficial. But there’s a story in “Wham!,” the new Netflix documentary about the quintessential pop duo of the 1980s, that testifies to what a chancy and audacious artist George Michael was even back in his teen-idol days.
The year is 1983. Michael and Andrew Ridgeley, coming off their first album, “Fantastic”, have established Wham! as an effective lightweight pop machine, with its two young stars prancing around the stage in sexy sportswear. The time has come to record “Careless Whisper,” a song they’ve had in their back pocket for several years (we hear the super-early demo version of it that they recorded in 1981 in Ridgeley’s living room on a Teac 4-track Portastudio). Michael has become enough of a powerhouse to hook up with Jerry Wexler,...

As the Wham! feature documentary on Netflix begins, you’ll hear lots of George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley voiceovers about what fun they had: “When I was with Andrew, we were absolutely determined to have a fantastic time,” Michael says, and then Ridgeley adds: “Wham! was a brotherhood, it was playful”. All the while, you’ll be waiting for the big “But…” change in tone hinting that all was not quite as it seemed, and that this documentary is about to reveal some darker hidden truths.
Let us save you some time: there’s no “but”. This is a joyful celebration of Wham!, pure and simple. The documentary title – an uncomplicated, cartoony Wham! – says it all. What’s coming is a good, old-fashioned jukebox romp through this eighties pop duo’s short but brightly burning four-year stint at the top of the charts.

The British pop stars hired the Palme d’Or winner to record their groundbreaking shows in east Asia. After it all ended in tears, the unseen film was locked up in a Scottish university
It’s hard to imagine a stranger pairing: Lindsay Anderson, the pioneering director acclaimed for his provocative leftwing critiques of postwar Britain, and Wham!, the young pop duo behind Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go and Last Christmas.
Yet the two parties came together in 1985, when Anderson, then 61, was hired to direct a documentary about George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley’s groundbreaking tour of China, which made the 21- and 22-year-olds the first western pop act to play in the country.

Wham! has been a cultural phenomenon in the music industry even long after George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley decided to split and pursue their own paths. They last performed together in 1986, but ever since, the two of them have left a mark, especially in the pop genre, that not many have been able to surpass. This ninety-minute documentary film is directed by Chris Smith, and it takes us through the ups and downs that the pop group went through during their four-year stint. It is interesting to come across many of their anecdotes that raise many topics that might have been frowned upon back then.
The film begins with George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley’s voiceovers talking about their friendship since their school days. They have been each other’s support since kindergarten, and they have had each other’s back ever since. This documentary is not just the story...

The 30th edition of the prestigious all-documentary film festival in the North of England just wrapped, witnessing a 17 percent increase in attendance by international and U.K. delegates over last year. Shortly before the start of this year’s event, Niño Zambrano was appointed to the creative director role on a permanent basis.
Speaking with Deadline, Niño Zambrano drew a distinction between this year’s event and the preceding one.
Raul Niño Zambrano and Annabel Grundy
“Last year was kind of the first one after the pandemic times. There were also train strikes, so there were a lot of things going on,” he said. “We had not announced yet last year the new leadership team — really having...

Oscar winning documentary producer is at Sheffield DocFest with Chris Smith’s ‘Wham’ and Sundance hit The Deepest Breath.
Ventureland co-founder John Battsek knew the chance to tell a postive, upbeat story about the UK 1980s pop band Wham! could very well appeal to sought-after young audiences.
Wham! , directed by the US’ Chris Smith, was one of two new films with which the Oscar-winning documentary producer was at Sheffield DocFest in the UK last week. The other was Laura McGann’s Sundance hit, The Deepest Breath, about Italian freediving champion Alessia Zecchini, which was acquired by Netflix late last year.

Documentary about George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley’s meteoric rise is a fun and moving watch that misses the chance to delve deeper
”Wise guys realise / There’s danger in emotional ties …” Here was one of the most artlessly, chillingly brilliant pop lyrics of the 80s, from Wham!’s Young Guns (Go For It), something to compare with the triumph of Madonna being a material girl in a material world. You can’t help thinking again about its relevance to Andrew Ridgeley and George Michael’s emotional ties to each other as you watch this entertaining but weirdly incurious documentary, composed of existing footage and voiceover commentary.
Wham! was a pop band which lasted for four years, from 1982 to 1986, a meteoric fame ride which saw them devastate the music scene like Roy Lichtenstein’s fighter plane, clocking up a string of hits and getting canonised as pop A-listers alongside David Bowie,...

Most music fans wouldn’t confuse Paul McCartney and Wham!. Paul and The Beatles turned down $250 million to reunite in the 1970s; we’re certain Wham! never entertained that kind of payday to get back together. Still, there are some similarities between the two artists. They were both successful, but for a short stretch in 1984, one Wham! song kept Paul from reaching No. 1 on the charts.

Multiple Emmy nominee Chris Smith directed the Wham! doc and will appear at Sheffield, conducting a master class after the film’s premiere. Novaya Gazeta newspaper editor-in-chief Dmitry Muratov in Moscow October 8, 2021.
Among other world premieres is The Price of Truth, a film directed by Patrick Forbes about the Russian journalist Dmitry Muratov, winner of the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize. At the height of his fame, George Michael had two options – both bad. If the pop superstar had told the world he was gay in the 1980s, his screaming, adoring, grabby female fans might have been afraid to touch him. Misinformation about Aids had begun to seep into society. Coming out, though, would have at least meant that he was free. If the Wham! singer hid his sexuality, he’d be the subject of relentless rumour and press intrusion and, when it finally became impossible to conceal it any longer, he’d be faced with accusations of hypocrisy for living a double life, for decades, in the public eye. The path he took, in the end, was the latter, but it all imploded in 1998 when he was arrested in a Los Angeles public toilet for “lewd conduct” (he was cruising for sex with men). That incident, and the media frenzy that ensued,...

Some Album of the Year victories at the Grammys fly somewhat under the radar. Others are like George Michael’s iconic “Faith.” The singer’s debut solo album was not only a massive success, but its victory at the Grammys cemented it and Michael’s legend status. In a way, “Faith’s” win was not only unconventional, but inadvertently may have opened the gates for queer artists at the award show.
Michael was obviously no stranger to success. He was part of the duo Wham! alongside Andrew Ridgeley from 1981 to 1986. With Wham!’s music being more lighthearted and targeting a younger audience, Michael felt the need to disband and pursue a more mature career in music, like many young teen-pop stars. As such, the duo separated in 1986, and Michael began working on his debut album, “Faith.” While in Wham!, he had decided to label himself as bisexual, although he kept...

For 20 years, ever since Gilbert Gottfried made the tasteless crack that inspired it just a few weeks after 9/11, “Too soon” has been the mantra we use to jokingly suggest someone is making a joke before the time is ripe for it. But the phrase could also be applied to certain music documentaries. “Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry” caught the first chapters of Billie Eilish’s career, starting in 2015, when she recorded and posted “Ocean Eyes” on SoundCloud — and though she is still a young star (just 20), the film felt momentous, because her stardom has had such an extraordinary trajectory, and you feel, in a way, that she remade the pop-music world in her own image.

‘A Simple Favour’ and ‘Bridesmaids’ filmmaker Paul Feig has taken up the mantle to write and direct the new monster movie, ‘Dark Army’ for Universal Pictures.
The story is based on an original idea from Feig but no specific plot details have been revealed. Reports suggest that characters from Universal’s classic monster library and original characters created by Feig will be included. Feig and Laura Fischer will produce through his Universal-based Feigco Productions.
After a disastrous start to the Dark Universe with the Tom Cruise led ‘The Mummy’, Universal dropped the idea of an interconnected universe. Universal are now favouring filmmaker passion that has connective tissue to Uni’s Classic Monsters legacy which will see Leigh Whannell’s ‘The Invisible Man’ kick-start the monster universe. Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions take the gauntlet to push things forward with ‘The Invisible Man’. Having Whannell on board to write, produce and direct the reboot.

Universal’s “Last Christmas,” a seasonal romantic comedy underpinned by several of George Michael’s hits, will feature a previously unreleased song from the late singer in full at the end of the film, director Paul Feig said Wednesday.
The movie, which will be released in November and dropped its first trailer Wednesday, stars Emilia Clarke, Emma Thompson, Michelle Yeoh and Henry Golding. It borrows its title from one of Michael’s chart-toppers during his Wham! days with Andrew Ridgeley.
Michael was found dead of heart and liver disease on Christmas Day 2016. He was 53.
