Netflix has ordered a documentary feature based on the life and career of civil rights attorney Ben Crump, Variety has learned.
The yet-to-be-titled documentary will be directed and produced by Nadia Hallgren, who recently received two Emmy nominations for her work on Netflix’s Michelle Obama documentary “Becoming.” Kenya Barris will produce via Khalabo Ink Society, while Roger Ross Williams will produce under his One Story Up Productions banner. Lauren Cioffi will also produce, with Geoff Martz executive producing.
The doc will examine a number of Crump’s past and current cases, his impact on American civil rights and racial justice, and the toll such work takes on him and his family. Leading civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump has set his latest Hollywood project, joining the producing team behind the film “Freedom Ride,” which dramatizes the experiences of the original Freedom Riders, including the late Rep. John Lewis.
Crump’s Brooklyn Media will produce the film with Hideaway Entertainment and Inde Companies. The news comes less than a month after civil rights legend and longtime U.S. congressman Lewis died at 80 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. It also comes on the 55th anniversary of the landmark passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which prohibited discriminatory practices in voting.

Bron Studios’ non-scripted division Bron Life is partnering with civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump and his Brooklyn Media to develop and produce Homicide or Justified. The docuseries, hosted by Crump, takes viewers step by step through questionable murder cases like the ones involving George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Aubery, whose families he currently represents.
In In Homicide or Justified, Crump — whose clients have also included the families of Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, Tamir Rice and Nakia Jones — will bring in investigators, family members and celebrities to examine the details of crimes. Crump has represented the families of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, Tamir Rice, Nakia Jones, Danny Ray Thomas and Stephon Clark, as well as the residents of Flint, Michigan. Additionally, he worked on the 2015 Holtzclaw Oklahoma City Police rape case, representing 9 of the 13 Black women who were victims, and the Us Supreme Court case involving excessive police force against Robbie Tolan.
He is the founder and principal of Ben Crump Law; current President of the National Civil Rights Trial Lawyers Association; and serves on the Innocence Project Board of Directors and the National Black Justice Coalition Board of Directors.
Previously, he served as the 73rd president of the National Bar Association and was the first African American to chair the Florida State University College of Law Board of Directors.

The production company will create scripted narrative content for film, TV and digital media with a focus on stories of injustice, inequality and civil rights.
