Denis Villeneuve’s Dune is an adaptation of author Frank Herbert’s epic sci-fi novel of the same name. However, given the sheer scale and scope of the novel, it is understandable that Villeneuve and his team took some creative liberties while adapting the source material for the big screen.

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune series has successfully captivated audiences’ interest thanks to its visual effects, direction, and screenplay among other elements. Fans applauded the project for mostly remaining true to its source material, referring to the two-part adaptation of Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel of the same name. However, the director decided to enhance its beauty by making significant changes in the movie which were different from the original material.
Dune: Part Two (2024)
One such intriguing change included tweaking Rebecca Ferguson’s role, who plays the role of Lady Jessica, mother of Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides in the Dune series.
Denis Villeneuve Changed Rebecca Ferguson’s Dune Role from the Source Material
Given the reception of female-led projects, it was quite a risky move to give more agency to female characters, but his decision ended up paying him handsomely. Denis Villeneuve decided to give an upgrade to Lady Jessica, which...

As John Wick spin-off Ballerina goes back before the cameras, the cast expands for the movie, which is now set for release in 2025.
Earlier this year came the news that that first John Wick spin-off movie, Ballerina, was being delayed for a full year. Originally set for release this summer, and with a fan trailer already doing the rounds, Ballerina has now been put back to mid-2025. That’s to build in time for what sounds like fairly sizeable reshoot work.
Len Wiseman has directed the movie, and John Wick’s Chad Stahelski is now reportedly helping with fresh action sequences for the film. We also get news too that the reshoots are adding at least two new roles as well.
David Castaneda, of The Umbrella Academy, is taking one of them. Sharon Duncan-Brewster of Sex Education is taking the other. They’ll join an ensemble that’s led by Ana de Armas,...

Exclusive: Lionsgate’s female-driven John Wick spinoff Ballerina has added David Castañeda (The Umbrella Academy) and Sharon Duncan-Brewster (Sex Education) to its cast amid reshoots abroad, Deadline can reveal.
Word of the castings comes at a newsy time in the world of John Wick, as word has emerged of a Wick series in the works, alongside an animated series adaptation of Twilight.
Ballerina watches as a young female assassin (Ana de Armas) trained in the traditions of the Ruska Roma seeks revenge against the people who killed her family — as did Wick against those who have did him wrong, in films released between 2014 and 2019. After signing a new deal with Lionsgate expanding his oversight of the John Wick franchise, of which he was the architect, Chad Stahelski is working with Ballerina helmer Len Wiseman to shape new action sequences for the film.

A few months ago, we heard that The CW had picked up the U.S. rights to the TV series adaptation of author Frank Schätzing’s apocalyptic sci-fi novel The Swarm (you can pick up a copy at This Link). Now Deadline has revealed that The Swarm is set to begin airing on The CW at 9 p.m. Et/Pt on Tuesday, September 12th. A trailer for the show can be seen in the embed above.
The Swarm, not to be confused with the Donald Glover / Prime Video series Swarm, has been a long time coming. In 2006, Uma Thurman and producers Michael Souvignier, Ica Souvignier, and Till Grönemeyer acquired the film rights, with The Silence of the Lambs screenwriter Ted Tally handling the adaptation and Dino De Laurentiis on board to help finance the film. But it didn’t make it into production. In 2018, it was announced that Game of Thrones...

Sundance break-out Earth Mama spotlights to struggles of a pregnant Black young woman who is trying to regain custody of her two children from foster care, in a quiet, moving indie drama by former Olympic athlete turned writer/director Savanah Leaf. Set and shot in the San Francisco Bay area, this impressive feature film debut for the British-born, under-30 writer/director has garnered awards and promising buzz. Unlike other similar dramas, Earth Mother has a remarkable realism and touching cliche-free drama along with a surprising artistry.
Gia (Tia Nomore) is in drug treatment for a drug addiction that led to her two children being placed in foster. The young single mother has a part-time job with a mall photographer and attends the mandated parenting and other classes yet never seems to quite get on top of...

The baby is gently cooing, nestled in a tiny bed against a cloud-flecked blue sky. Gia, a young woman, is tending to the newborn, adjusting clothes and tickling toes. The camera slowly pulls back, further and further. Soon, it becomes clear we’re in a photo shop, the kind you see in hundreds of malls across America. This is Gia’s job. She leaves the scene, and the baby’s parents take her place. Watching on the sidelines, Gia gently smiles as her boss takes the shots. A mother herself...

With Earth Mama, writer-director Savanah Leaf seems to be taking up James Baldwin’s evergreen adage that “anyone who has ever struggled with poverty knows how extremely expensive it is to be poor.” As the pregnant Gia (Tia Nomore) fights a foster care system on multiple fronts, Leaf throws us, head-first and in anxiety-inducing fashion, into the middle of an interlocking system of structural inequality seemingly designed to keep people trapped in cycles of hopelessness, in the process tearing families apart.
When we meet the single mother of two in Oakland’s backwater streets, Gia has already been stripped of most of her parental rights thanks to, we learn, a history of drug addiction. Though steadfast in her determination to prove to the courts that she’s a committed mother, Gia is hamstrung by the impossible and incompatible expectations that she somehow work enough to pay off child support, fit...

Breakout Sundance star and rapper Tia Nomore has signed with Range Media Partners for representation in acting and music.
Nomore is the lead in Savannah Leaf’s upcoming A24 drama “Earth Mama,” in which she delivered a critically acclaimed debut feature performance at this year’s Sundance Film Festival as a struggling single mother. Well established in hip hop, Nomore rose to prominence as an artist on the Oakland music scene.
In “Earth Mama,” Nomore stars as expectant mom Gia, who already has two kids in foster care as she anticipates a third. Though she has the support of a tight-knit community in the Bay Area, she faces formidable challenges in reclaiming her family and building a new life. A24, the studio behind the Oscar winning “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” will release the film on July 7.

The Swarm, the big-budget series based on the Frank Schätzing best-seller and executive produced by Game of Thrones producer Frank Doelger, has landed with The CW in the U.S..
The deal sees the Beta Film and Zdf Studios thriller headed to American audiences after debuting at the Berlin Film Festival and recently being acquired by Sky for the U.K. and Spain’s Movistar+ channel. The U.S. deal also comes amid the WGA writers strike, when the appeal of foreign TV product for American buyers is expected to grow.
The Swarm chronicles the struggle of humankind against an unknown enemy that lives in the depths of the sea. Just as the reckless treatment of the oceans threatens the natural habitat of this mysterious collective, it strikes back.
The series stars Cécile de France, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Jack Greenlees, Lydia Wilson, Krista Kosonen, Alexander Karim, Leonie Benesch and Barbara Sukowa.

"They try to take our culture, try to take our freedom, and you know they'll try to take our babies, too..." A24 has unveiled an official trailer for an indie drama titled Earth Mama, marking the feature directorial debut of Olympian Savanah Leaf - who has been making a bunch of shorts before this. It first premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, a last minute addition to the fest's line-up. With two children in foster care, Gia, a pregnant single mother pitted against the system, fights to reclaim her family. In her close-knit Bay Area community, she works to make a life for herself and for her kids, in this singular debut feature from filmmaker Savanah Leaf. A glowing breakout at Sundance 2023, starring Tia Nomore, Erika Alexander, Doechii, and Dominic Fike. With Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Olivia Luccardi, and Bokeem Woodbine. The tender, moving film earned great reviews. This is a stunning trailer + poster.

One of the most accomplished directorial debuts of the year thus far, Olympian-turned-director Savanah Leaf’s Earth Mama premiered at Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and was also selected as Opening Night of New Directors/New Films. Starring Tia Nomore, Erika Alexander, Keta Price, Doechii, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Bokeem Woodbine, Dominic Fike, the film follows Gia, a pregnant single mother pitted against the system, fighting to reclaim her family. Ahead of a July release, A24 has now released the first trailer.

The summer movie season might be best known for its big-budget blockbusters and franchise sequels, but there’s a notable benefit for indie film lovers as well: the films that premiered at Sundance begin to open in theaters. The next few months will see several festival circuit hits open in arthouses, but few are more anticipated among cinephiles than “Earth Mama.”
Savanah Leaf’s directorial debut, which follows a single mother struggling to navigate the welfare state with her third child on the way, was widely seen as the arrival of a bold new cinematic voice on the indie film circuit. A24 bought the project months before it even made its way to Sundance, and a new trailer is offering audiences a preview of what they have to look forward to this summer.

When director Denis Villeneuve and Warner Bros. Pictures announced that they were breaking Frank Herbert’s massive science fiction classic, Dune, into two films, fans with long memories approved. But then who could really forget what happened when David Lynch attempted to smoosh the story into two hours back in 1984? Nonetheless, those same fans felt a pang of anxiety when it was revealed that unlike how Peter Jackson adapted The Lord of the Rings, Villeneuve would be filming Dune: Part One and Dune: Part Two separately. In other words, to see the climax of Herbert’s epic vision, where the mighty Shai-Hulud sandworms went to war and empires bled, we’d need to wait on the box office of Part One—and at least several years for Dune: Part Two.

Taking place between March 29 and April 9 at New York’s Museum of Modern Art and Film at Lincoln Center, the 52nd edition of New Directors/New Films will commence with Savanah Leaf’s superb debut (and Sundance stand-out) Earth Mama, close with Vuk Lungolov-Klotz’s Mutt (winner of Best Actor at Sundance), and in-between showcase films from 41 directors––27 features, 11 shorts, and (I just counted) most continents.
So says La Frances Hui, Curator at MoMA’s Department of Film and Nd/Nf’s Co-chair: “This geographically diverse lineup brings together new directors from all over the world presenting works that make bold and creative statements on everything from identity and family to political repression and postcolonial discourse. The power of cinema to inspire imagination and explore perspectives is evident in the wide range of styles, ideas, and voices in the selection.”

Conceived with a remarkable amount of filmmaking confidence, Savanah Leaf’s directorial debut Earth Mama follows the trials and tribulations of a pregnant single mother struggling to get by day-to-day, restricted to seeing her other two children, currently in foster care, only one hour per week during supervised visits. With a history of drug addiction, she must find her way through a system that stacks the odds against her, exploring the possibilities of adoption and the pain of knowing the court may immediately take away her soon-to-be-born baby. It’s a difficult, demanding portrait of a life in shambles, susceptible to being relegated to poverty porn or a social-realistic bent that surrenders to one-note misery. It’s a miracle, then, that Olympian-turned-director Leaf finds both the humanity and beauty of every frame, bringing empathy to an impossible situation and delivering an abundance of grace notes.

Film hasn’t often been kind to young Black mothers like Gia in “Earth Mama.” Too often, women who are struggling to do the best they can by their children are blamed for their own circumstances. The presumption is they have squandered their opportunities to live and do better, but the problem, as “Earth Mama” illustrates, is too often they haven’t been given shoes, let alone bootstraps.
Born and raised in the Bay Area, Gia (played by Tia Nomore) is a young mother whose two children have been taken by the state. That means she gets to see them only an hour a week during supervised visits. On top of that, she is weeks from delivering another child. Still, despite being on the brink of labor, she makes those visits, and as the film shows, that is, in and of itself, a feat that should be applauded, even as...

As movie titles go, “Earth Mama” has a nice ring to it, though “Birth Mother” probably would have been a better fit for former Olympian turned filmmaker Savanah Leaf’s feature debut. Building on questions asked in her award-winning 2020 short “The Heart Still Hums” — an artful inquiry into the social challenges that made possible her sister’s adoption — the helmer turns an empathetic spotlight on the kind of woman society judges most harshly: a single Black mother on the brink of poverty who gives in to her addictions while pregnant.
The system is clear in such cases. Drug use counts as child abuse when a fetus is involved, and automatic protections kick in to separate a newborn that tests positive for methamphetamines from its mother. That’s what happened to Leaf’s sister, Corinna. Ergo, you might expect the director to approach the phenomenon from the adopted kid’s point of view.

Learn the names Savanah Leaf, first-time feature filmmaker, and Tia Nomore, first-time feature actress, right now, because their debut film “Earth Mama” is a shimmering stunner. A former Olympic volleyball athlete, Leaf has a canny eye for locating the subversion and beauty within a welfare-system drama about a single mother fighting for her life and children. What sounds, on paper, like a challenging sit is actually a wondrous 97-minute feature, whose director and star are obviously poised for greatness.
Any film tackling the petty and punishing bureaucracies of the foster care system risks wading into melodrama or cliche, but “Earth Mama” largely avoids those rookie traps, and with an unpredictable and fiercely focused actress at its roots. The first fully in-person Sundance Film Festival since 2020 is around the bend, with the Utah-based event running January 19-29. While the festival revealed more than 100 feature-length films in December, Sundance has announced five more world premiere features, plus four throwback screenings from past festivals.
The latest feature films world premiering at the upcoming festival are “Beyond Utopia,” playing in the U.S. Documentary Competition section; “Flora and Son,” A24’s “Earth Mama” and “Past Lives,” playing in the Premieres section; and “Stephen Curry: Underrated,” playing in the Special Screenings section. Perhaps the buzziest addition is “Flora and Son,” the new musical from Dublin director John Carney. Starring Eve Hewson and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, this is “Once” director Carney’s first film since 2016’s “Sing Street.” Since then, he has served as showrunner, director, and executive producer on the Prime Video anthology series “Modern Love.”

Millie Bobby Brown is hoping that in the future she has an opportunity to play a “real person” and she revealed she would like to portray Britney Spears.
“I think her story resonates with me,” she told Drew Barrymore on her daytime talk show. “Just growing up, watching her videos, watching interviews of her when she was younger — I see the scramble for words and I don’t know her, but when I look up pictures of her I feel like I could tell her story in the right way and hers only.”
As of now, there are no concrete plans for a film about Spears. Brown is currently promoting the sequel to Enola Holmes on Netflix where the Stranger Things star plays Sherlock’s sister.

“It appears the game has found its feet again.” Enola Holmes’ riff on one of her brother’s most famous catchphrases is a succinct metaphor for Netflix’s reimagining of the Sherlock Holmes mythos. It’s familiar, a little ungainly, but cheerfully cute with its self-aware wink to the audience. And so it is that the game is very much finding its feet, or something like that, in the Enola Holmes franchise.
Based on the Nancy Springer young adult book series, and featuring Stranger Things’ Millie Bobby Brown both as star and producer, the Enola Holmes movies have been a smash with Netflix subscribers and an excellent bit of whimsy to showcase Brown’s charisma and Henry Cavill’s determination to star in nearly every franchise, with the Superman actor appearing here as a decidedly ripped Sherlock Holmes. This piece contains spoilers for Enola Holmes 2.
The first official case for young Enola Holmes (Millie Bobby Brown) starts with a missing girl: factory worker named Sarah Chapman (Hannah Dodd). But as Enola tugs at all the loose threads, she discovers mounting evidence—a missing page from the factory books, a suspicious surge of typhus, a scandalous romance—that draws the attention of the factory’s owners, Scotland Yard, and even her brother Sherlock (Henry Cavill). It all culminates in Sarah, her sister Bessie (Serrana Su-Ling Bliss), and the other factory girls going on strike—a real-life event which grounded the movie’s events in a sense of historical context.
The Matchgirls’ strike of 1888 changed the working conditions at the Bryant & May match factory, but it was not the first of its kind. The matchgirls went on strike several times between the 1870s to 1880s, always in an attempt to...

This article contains Enola Holmes 2 spoilers.
The biggest revelation in Enola Holmes 2 isn’t just all about the post-credits scene connecting the old-school Holmes canon to Nancy Springer’s books. Yes, there is a surprising cameo at the end, one which will make all sorts of Sherlockian fans happy. But before that happens, in the movie’s big denouement, we get another very famous Sherlock Holmes character. But this time, this specific person is disguised as another character entirely.
The Enola Holmes 2 Easter Egg That Changes Everything
For most of the second Enola Holmes film, both Sherlock and Enola (Henry Cavill and Millie Bobby Brown) are battling a mystery of corruption. Enola is concerned with the very real event of the Matchgirls’ Strike of 1888 while Sherlock is after a money laundering scheme orchestrated by a mysterious villain named “Moriarty.” As we learn midway through the film, these two events are linked.

Millie Bobby Brown’s eccentric fourth wall breaks have become such a distinguishable trademark of Harry Bradbeer’s “Enola Holmes” films that in the sequel, the “Stranger Things” star tried to do it in every scene she could.
“Maybe Harry can agree with me on this but I think in every scene we tried doing, we tried breaking the fourth wall and then he edited the ones that landed the most,” Brown told Variety at the New York premiere of “Enola Holmes 2” on Thursday night at the Paris Theater.
Brown went on to say that she took inspiration from Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s fourth wall-breaking techniques in “Fleabag,” the critically acclaimed Amazon Prime series on which Bradbeer also served as a director.
“It’s just like the most perfect way to break the fourth wall with her wit, her humor, her timing,” Bobby Brown said. “It’s so inspirational to me.
