No lie: Peacock is ordering a second season of Based on a True Story.
The NBCUniversal-owned streamer has picked up the series, a comedic thriller from UCP and starring Kaley Cuoco (who also executive produces) and Chris Messina. The first season debuted in June and earned mostly favorable reviews; detailed viewing data is, per usual with streamers, not public, but the series did land in Nielsen’s top 10 rankings for the week of its premiere.
Based on a True Story is, in fact, based on (or at least partly inspired by) a true story, while also satirizing true crime tropes. The series stars Cuoco and Messina as Ava and Nathan, a down-on-their-luck couple who cross paths with an infamous serial killer in Los Angeles. Ava, a true crime obsessive, hits on the idea of making a podcast with the killer as a way out of their rut.

Playing a man who gets entangled in a murder investigation because his wife (Kaley Cuoco) is obsessed with true crime, “Based on a True Story” kind of hits close to home for Chris Messina. When he was a kid, he and a friend actually may have actually discovered a crime scene.
“I grew up in Northport, Long Island,” Messina told Variety at the Peacock series’ premiere Thursday at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood. “I grew up on Makamah Road, about a block from the Long Island Sound. A buddy and I walked to the Sound and – it was very ‘Stand By Me’ – we found a hand that washed up on the beach.”
They immediately called the cops. “We had to report it,” Messina recalled. “I was pretending to be River Phoenix in ‘Stand By Me.’”

As soon as filmmaker Sofia Alvarez read the Sarah Dessen novel “Along for the Ride,” she immediately envisioned a movie adaptation.
“I really grew up loving those summer teen movies where you could feel the weather or like you could feel the air conditioning was too cold,” Alvarez told TheWrap during an interview about her film adaptation, which she wrote and directed. “You could feel the humidity and smell the sunscreen through the screen and I just thought ‘Along for the Ride’ has the potential to be one of those summer movies.’”
“Along for the Ride” tells the story of Auden West (who is played in the film by Emma Pasarow), who is one summer away from heading to Defriese University. Auden’s parents split up when she was younger, and she lived with her mom (Andie MacDowell) through high school, but for the summer she decides to visit Colby,...

In the new Netflix feature film adaptation of “Along for the Ride,” based on the novel by author Sarah Dessen, stars Emma Pasarow and Belmont Cameli fell into a pretty natural rhythm of acting out their characters’ budding relationship. But one thing the actor and actress were not on the same page about was the food fight scene.
When Auden (Pasarow) meets Eli (Cameli), he proposes a quest of daring activities to Auden — especially things she’s never tried before — and one of the items on her list includes starting a food fight. Fast forward quite a bit, and Auden’s wish comes true, with a fun story behind the filming of the scene.
“The food fight was absolutely insane. We shot until the sun rose in the morning. For continuity purposes, for timing restrictions, we could only do one take of [Belmont] pouring the beans on my head,” Pasarow said...

For a certain subset of younger readers, bestselling author Sarah Dessen’s books — mostly sweet teen romances about nice kids working out their problems and falling in love in the process, typically set in and around Dessen’s adopted home state of North Carolina — are must-reads. For nearly three decades, Dessen has been churning out her novels to, if not always strong acclaim, at least good sales and a dedicated fanbase.
And yet, until Netflix picked up options for a trio of Dessen’s books back in 2019, the author’s back catalog of inoffensive charmers scarcely got the movie treatment. Back in 2003, two of her books were turned into the Mandy Moore vehicle “How to Deal,” but it’s taken almost two decades for Dessen to get another crack at the screen. Netflix, which has given new life to the exact kind of fare Dessen writes — from the darling to...

Fans of “To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before,” beware. “Along for the Ride,” a new young adult film from writer-director Sofia Alvarez, is arriving on Netflix May 6, and the book-to-screen adaptation is one that definitely calls for a box of tissues.

It comes only a month after the reboot of the classic NBC comedy won Outstanding Comedy Series at the GLAAD Media Awards.
The second season of the show dropped in November after the first season reportedly performed well for the streaming service.

Netflix is adapting Sarah Dessen's New York Times bestseller "Along For the Ride." Starring Emma Pasarow and Belmont Cameli, the Sofia Alvarez-directed film centers around Pasarow's character, Auden, who meets the mysterious Eli (Cameli) the summer before going off to college. The two quickly form a bond through their shared insomnia, exploring the town of Colby under the cover of night.

If you fell head over heels for Netflix's sweet adaptation of Jenny Han's young-adult novel "To All the Boys I've Loved Before," then you should brace yourself for this exciting news: three of bestselling author Sarah Dessen's novels are also being turned into film adaptations by the streamer!
In 2019, The Hollywood Reporter announced that Netflix has chosen to adapt "This Lullaby," "Once and For All," and "Along For the Ride," which will be the first of the bunch to become a movie. The news follows the success of other YA book-to-movie adaptations, like "Dumplin'," "The Kissing Booth," and "To All the Boys I've Loved Before," so it makes total sense that Netflix would expand its roster of upcoming YA-focused films.

Time in: School will be back in session in Bayside High for 10 more episodes, as Peacock has renewed “Saved by the Bell” for a second season.
“I’m thrilled that ‘Saved by the Bell’ has been renewed. It’s been more than 30 years since Zack Morris and his friends walked the halls of Bayside High, and now there’s a new generation of students in town. NBC’s streaming service, Peacock, has recently launched a Saved by the Bell reboot and Belmont Cameli is one of the show’s stars. In the series, Belmont plays Jamie Spano, Jessie Spano’s son. Although Saved by the Bell is one of Belmont’s first TV appearances, he handles himself with the confidence and poise of an experienced actor. The new “Saved by the Bell” announces the kind of comedy it wants to be from the very start, opening with a campaign ad from California Governor Zack Morris (played with a Republican smarm that doesn’t really exist anymore by Mark-Paul Gosselaar). The spot, which feels like it was produced by the same team who worked on Bobby Newport’s “Parks & Recreation” ads, acts as the extremely thin connective thread from the original series to this 2020 “reimagining. Since leaving Bayside nearly 30 years ago, Zack is still, in the parlance of the Funny or Die series, trash, since his rise to the Governor’s mansion was all part of an elaborate scheme to get out of a $75 parking ticket. This sequence also immediately tears down the fourth wall, as Morris mentions that after college he “became a successful trial attorney” with a shot of Gosselaar (flanked by Breckin Meyer) as...

Although Peacock’s “Saved by the Bell” sequel series is set in 2020 and made for a 2020 audience, some things remained too iconic to alter, from sets such as the Bayside High School hallway and the Max diner, to central characters such as Slater (Mario Lopez) and Jessie (Elizabeth Berkley Lauren), and the overall comedic but still family-friendly vibe to the show.
“This show isn’t, nor did it want to be, the ‘Euphoria’ version of ‘Saved by the Bell.’ I don’t think anyone wants to see Slater sending dick pics,” showrunner Tracey Wigfield tells Variety.
The original “Saved by the Bell” launched on NBC’s Saturday morning lineup in 1989, with a primary audience of kids and teens. Because it was broad-reaching in its demographic and created primarily to compete with cartoons, its depiction of high school, especially in its first season, was extremely chaste. If you’re a TV viewer of a certain vintage (like me), Saved by the Bell imprinted on you at an early age, whether you liked it or not. (In our defense, there wasn’t much TV to choose from back then.) Yes, the cheesy ’90s high school antics of Zack, Kelly, Slater, et al do have a certain nostalgic allure… but they were never “good,” really. So it’s a nice surprise that the Saved by the Bell revival — debuting Wednesday, Nov. 25 on Peacock; I’ve seen three episodes — is actually, surprisingly good: a cleverly constructed, highly tongue-in-cheek reinvention...

Exclusive: Time out! Bayside High is about to take over Peacock. The streaming service is set to launch a new Saved by the Bell channel on November 16 ahead of the reimagining of the classic Saturday morning show, which will debut on November 25.
The channel will available on Peacock for free and include over 100 episodes from the original Saved by the Bell series, Saved by the Bell: The College Years, Saved by the Bell: Hawaiian Style, and Saved by the Bell: Wedding in Vegas. It will be non-stop Bayside fun with Zack, Kelly, Slater, Jessie, Lisa and Screech to keep you satisfied until the revival makes it big premiere.
In the new series, Mark-Paul Gosselaar reprises his role as Zack Morris. His charmingly scheming ways have paved the road for him to become the governor of California. True to Zack Morris form, he is in hot water for closing too many underfunded high schools.

You’re next, Screech. Ok, so we seriously doubt that, but Peacock said on Thursday Lark Voorhies will make a “special appearance” as former Bayside High fashionista Lisa Turtle on its upcoming “Saved by the Bell” reboot series.
The exciting announcement came two days after the NBCUniversal streaming service revealed the “Saved by the Bell” trailer. Watch that here.
Fans of the original “Saved by the Bell” will probably remember the salacious purported tell-all book “Behind the Bell” penned by Dustin Diamond, who played Samuel “Screech” Powers on the teen series. “Behind the Bell” was poorly received by the rest of the “Sbtb” cast — and by book critics.
Diamond has since expressed regret over “Behind the Bell.”
On the original “Saved by the Bell,” Diamond’s nerdy Screech was obsessed with Lisa.
