London, Sep 3 (Ians) England pacer Gus Atkinson’s rise reached a phenomenal high when he took a four-wicket haul on his T20I debut against New Zealand in the second game of the series, giving the hosts a crushing 95-run win.
Atkinson was mighty impressive on his debut, taking 4-20 and captivating the interest of the fans with his raw pace, a prospect which makes him a scary bowler to face for the opposition batters. The right-arm pacer, who’s also in England’s provisional squad for the Men’s Odi World Cup, stated that he had the belief things could work out quickly for him via his abilities.
“I knew that once I got going, it could happen quickly. I’ve always known my ability and what I can do and I always knew once I had a chance with the games… The Hundred’s a big opportunity and...

Ben Stokes reverses Odi retirement ahead of World Cup, named in England squad for New Zealand series
London, Aug 16 (Ians) England on Wednesday received a huge boost ahead of the Icc Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 as their Test captain Ben Stokes reversed his decision to retire from 50-over format and will return to Odi setup in the upcoming four-match series against New Zealand.
England selector Luke Wright confirmed that the 15 players named for New Zealand ODIs are also part of the provisional squad for the World Cup, where their campaign will get underway against New Zealand, in a rematch of the epic 2019 final at Lord’s.
“It wasn’t really a case of changing his mind. He was always interested in coming back. He had to make that priority of getting through the Ashes, have a break and give the body a rest. It wasn’t a case of needing to beg him or anything like that, he was always keen, so it was actually fairly straightforward.

New Delhi, Aug 13 (Ians) England coach Matthew Mott has said he is open to including Test captain Ben Stokes in the World Cup squad based solely on his batting prowess and revealed that limited-overs captain Jos Buttler will have a chat with Stokes to see if he is willing to reconsider his Odi retirement.
Stokes retired from ODIs in July last year and recently reiterated his intentions of staying retired from the 50-over format to be fit for the Test series against India in early 2024.
The all-rounder was one of the heroes for England in the 2019 edition of the mega event, winning the Player of the Match in the Final for his memorable unbeaten 84.
“Jos will probably lead the way on that communication, but Ben’s pretty straight with all of us. We will see if he’s keen,” Matthew Mott was quoted by the Icc website.

London, Aug 3 (Ians) Former England captain Nasser Hussain has backed veteran fast-bowler James Anderson to find his form and leave an impact during the side’s Test tour of India next year after an unimpressive time in the recent Ashes series.
Anderson struggled to leave an impact during the drawn 2-2 series against Australia, taking just five wickets at an average of 85.40 from four appearances. England’s next Test assignment is a five-match series in India from January 25 to March 11 next year, with Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, Rajkot, Ranchi and Dharamshala being the venues.
Anderson, who has the most Test wickets (690) for any fast bowler in the history of the format, has picked six of his 32 five-wicket hauls in Tests against India, with his average in the country being 29.32.
“Jimmy’s got a very good record against India…and you need a balanced attack. You need that experience for younger players to come in.

New Delhi, July 27 (Ians) Former England assistant coach Paul Farbrace has revealed that star pacer Jofra Archer is “on course” to be fit for this year’s 50-over World Cup in India.
Archer played a key role in helping England to a first World Cup title in 2019, with the right-arm pacer claiming 20 wickets in the tournament to be among the leading wicket-takers, before playing a key role in the Ashes series with Australia later that summer.
But the 28-year-old fast bowler has been battling injuries for much of the last few years, having several elbow surgeries and a stress fracture of the back.
Farbrace, who coaches Archer at County side Sussex and played a key role in England’s white-ball setup before their World Cup success in 2019, said the towering quick is recovering well and likely to feature at this year’s tournament in India.

London, June 29 (Ians) Adding another feather to his cap, star batter Steve Smith on Thursday equalled Steve Waugh’s record of 32 Test centuries for Australia on Day 2 of the second Ashes 2023 Test against England at Lord’s.
Smith now has only Ricky Ponting, who has scored 41 centuries, in his sights on Australia’s all-time Test ton scoring charts. Moreover, playing his 174th innings in his 99th Test, Smith is the fastest to reach the 32-ton mark.
With this latest century, Smith has now equaled Jack Hobbs’ tally of 12 centuries in Ashes, placing them both in second position. The legendary Don Bradman continues to reign supreme at the top of the list with an impressive 19 centuries to his name.
Resuming his innings at 85, just 15 runs shy of reaching his second century at Lord’s, the right-hander batter unleashed a series of boundary shots upon the arrival of the second new ball.

Dubai, June 14 (Ians) Former skipper Nasser Hussain has backed England to reclaim the Ashes from Australia as they ride a wave of momentum since Ben Stokes took the reins as captain of the Test team.
England have not won the Ashes since a 3-2 home series victory in 2015, as Australia dominated whenever hosts since then with 4-0 scorelines in both 2017/18 and 2021/22.
Australia also retained the urn when touring England in 2019, as the five-match series was drawn 2-2 after the hosts claimed the last Test at The Oval to level the result.
But England has left opponents amazed in the past year with an exhilarating style of Test cricket, famously referred to as ‘Bazball,’ ever since Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum took charge.
“I can’t see many draws simply because of the way England are playing, they’re trying to take the draw out of the equation,” Hussain told The Icc Review.

New Delhi, June 9 (IANs) Vice-captain Ollie Pope claimed that England have come up with a different plan to combat Australian batter, Steve Smith, when the Ashes series starts next week.
Smith has an exemplary record against England and in English conditions. He made 774 runs at an average of 110.54, despite being struck on the head by Jofra Archer during the 2019 Ashes at Lord’s.
The Aussie batter looked in superb touch in English conditions again at The Oval as he struck 121 in Australia’s first innings of the World Test Championship final at The Oval.
England will take on Australia in the Ashes opener at Edgbaston from June 16, leaving Pope well aware of the threat. But the 25-year-old expressed confidence that England’s bowlers are ready for Smith as they have worked out ways to bowl at him.

London, June 1 (Ians) Former cricketer Mark Butcher believes England have handed a Test debut to uncapped fast bowler Josh Tongue due to his extra pace, something which was also seen when fellow pacer Matthew Potts was given his first Test cap last year.
Tongue, 25, has impressed for several seasons in domestic competitions for Worcestershire and was part of the England Lions tour of Sri Lanka earlier this year. He was included initially in the England Test squad as a cover for James Anderson and Ollie Robinson nursing groin and ankle niggles.
His remarkable Test debut will come after almost retiring from the game due to a nagging nerve issue in his right shoulder, which needed two operations and Botox injections to solve in a 15-month layoff period.
Now, ahead of the one-off match against Ireland at Lord’s on Thursday, Tongue became England’s 711th cricketer in the longest format of the game,...

Ponting firstly selected an opener from each team with a left-right combination as Rohit Sharma and Usman Khawaja were named at the top of the order.

Ahmedabad, May 27 (Ians) Mumbai Indians head coach Mark Boucher threw all of his weight behind skipper Rohit Sharma in terms of his lean batting form in Ipl 2023, saying the right-handed opener was leading the initiative of batting in the ultra-attacking way they wished for in the competition.
Rohit made only 332 runs in 16 innings of Ipl 2023 with just two fifties at a strike rate of 132.80. On Friday, in the Qualifier 2 clash against Gujarat Titans, he could make only eight runs as Mumbai, despite Tilak Varma’s attacking 14-ball 43 and Suryakumar Yadav’s quick 61, were bowled out for 171 in 18.2 overs, crashing out of the competition.

London, May 25 (Ians) Veteran England fast bowler James Anderson has declared himself fit to play in the first Ashes Test against Australia at Edgbaston on June 16, after recovering from a groin injury sustained while playing a County Championship game for his club Lancashire earlier this month.

Ahmedabad, May 25 (Ians) The stage is set for the highly-anticipated Qualifier 2 in Indian Premier League (Ipl) 2023 after Mumbai Indians booked the seat with a comprehensive 81-run win over Lucknow Super Giants in Eliminator at Chennai on Wednesday.

Melbourne, May 25 (Ians) Former Australia fast-bowler Trent Copeland believes the side will bring the best out of veteran opener David Warner to perform in next month’s World Test Championship (Wtc) Final against India and The Ashes in England.

After taking home the Emerging Player of the Tournament award, Malik made his T20I and Odi debut for India in the same year, impressing legends of the game with the chances he got. But in Ipl 2023, Malik has played only seven matches, picking five wickets at an economy rate of 10.35 and is yet to play this month.
Malik’s conspicuous absence from the playing eleven raised further eyebrows through the words of Hyderabad skipper Aiden Markram after the toss against Royal Challengers Bangalore on Thursday.
"Not too sure to be honest. Certainly, he’s a player with the X-factor, bowls at 150kph, but I don’t really know what’s behind the scenes but he has a lot of X-factor," he said.
Now former India left-arm pacer Zaheer Khan expressed disappointment over how the franchise has handled a bright talent like Malik. "I think Umran Malik has not been...

New Delhi, May 18 (Ians) Veteran England fast-bowler James Anderson said he was ‘absolutely gutted’ for speedster Jofra Archer being sidelined for the entire home summer due to an elbow injury and hoped for him to be able to recover from the latest setback in his career.
Archer will be missing one-off Test against Ireland, The Ashes and the rest of England’s cricketing summer after suffering a recurrence of a stress fracture to his right elbow, which had earlier ruled him out of Mumbai Indians’ campaign in Ipl 2023.
The right-arm pacer has not played a Test for England since March 2021 and made a comeback to international cricket earlier this year after dealing with elbow and back injuries for nearly two years. Apart from him, pacer Olly Stone is unavailable at least for the first half of the summer due to a hamstring injury.

New Delhi, May 17 (Ians) Former Australian captain Allan Border feels that Jofra Archer being ruled out for England’s entire home summer matches will prove to be a huge blow for the side in a bid to reclaim the Ashes, set to be played from June 16 at Edgbaston.

Lucknow, May 17 (Ians) After suffering a five-run defeat to Lucknow Super Giants, Mumbai Indians bowling coach Shane Bond criticised the bowling attack for not sticking to the already discussed plans.
Mumbai’s death bowling woes resurfaced on Tuesday when they conceded a whopping 54 runs in the last three overs as Lucknow posted 177/3, with Marcus Stoinis playing a knock to remember for ages on a tough pitch through 89 not out off 47 balls.
“For me, the most frustrating thing is about not sticking to the plans that we talk about. We were very clear with what we wanted to do on this wicket to players like Marcus and where we wanted to bowl, we didn’t bowl there consistently enough.”
“When you’re looking at a team plan, you’ve got to get the batsmen to hit in areas where you want them to hit. Make it as hard as possible for them.

London, May 16 (Ians) England pacer Jofra Archer has been ruled out of the English summer, including the Ashes, due to a recurrence of the stress fracture in his right elbow, the England and Wales Cricket Board (Ecb) confirmed on Tuesday.
Concerns about Archer’s fitness were raised earlier this month when he flew home early, cutting short his stint in the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League (Ipl) with the Mumbai Indians.
Ecb had then released a statement, stating that the 28-year-old was “pushing through the discomfort whilst recently playing” but could not take any further part in the Ipl. And now, it has been confirmed that the pacer will miss out on the entirety of this summer’s Ashes campaign, which begins at Edgbaston on June 16,
Archer is now set to undergo rehabilitation with the England and Sussex medical teams, who will work on his injury management.

Dubai, May 15 (Ians) England’s fast bowling stocks continue to dwindle with news that veteran pacer James Anderson picked up a groin strain while playing in the County Championship for Lancashire.
As per Icc report, Anderson picked up the injury while bowling on the opening day of Lancashire’s County clash against Somerset in Manchester and the 40-year-old didn’t take the field over the final three days of the contest that ended tamely in a draw on Sunday.
Whether Anderson recovers in time to feature in the one-off Test against Ireland at Lord’s next month remains to be seen, while England will be hoping the durable right-armer is fit to play in the eagerly-awaited Ashes series against Australia that commences on June 16.

New Delhi, May 12 (Ians) On pacer Jofra Archer being reportedly offered a year-long contract by Mumbai Indians, England men’s Test head coach Brendon McCullum admits that the game is going in a different direction from what it is right now.
As per a report in Daily Mail, Archer is set to be offered a year-round, multi-million-pound deal by the five-time Ipl winning team that would require the England and Wales Cricket Board (Ecb) to gain permission from the Ipl franchise to pick him for England’s international matches. As of now, Archer has left Ipl 2023 due to a long-standing right elbow injury.
“In the end, the game is going in a different direction. In the last few years, there’s been a shifting of the sand somewhat around international cricket and we’d be completely naive to think that players would turn down huge amounts of money on long-term...

There is no doubt that T20 cricket brings the exuberance and fearlessness of youngsters to the fore but the format has also shown that there is no substitute for the experience, which plays a vital role in tense match situations
In the ongoing Ipl 2023, the likes of M.S. Dhoni, Ishant Sharma, Mohit Sharma, and Piyush Chawla have proved that experiences cannot be brought from the market and they still have that hunger and desire to learn, re-invent and make an impact for their respective teams.
Many of them were almost forgotten stars before the start of the Ipl 2023, but the veterans have defied age and expectations and rewound the clock with their impressive outings in the field.
Ms Dhoni (41 years)
It has been nearly four years since M.S. Dhoni retired from international cricket, but the 41-year-old continues to deliver for his team Chennai Super Kings in Ipl with both bat and captaincy.

With the win over Bangalore helping Mumbai stay alive in the race for the playoffs, left-arm pacer Jason Behrendorff admitted that the competition this season has been very tight as the league approaches its business end.

Jordan comes in place of his English compatriot Jofra Archer, who left for home to manage the rehabilitation of his injury.
“Good pitch, chased down targets well, a good opportunity to have runs in front of us,” said Rohit at the toss.
“(It’s a) Typical Mumbai pitch. Has a bit of grass cover, but there are some dry patches. Not sure how it’ll play. We’ve never looked at the table so much, focused on playing good cricket, rest will take care of itself,” the Mumbai Indians skipper added.
Royal Challengers Bangalore too made one change in their playing XI with Vijaykumar Vyshak coming in for Karn Sharma.

New Delhi, May 9 (Ians) English pacer Jofra Archer will return home from the ongoing Indian Premier League (Ipl) with immediate effect to focus on his rehabilitation, the England & Wales Cricket Board (Ecb) confirmed on Tuesday.
Archer, who has been replaced by Chris Jordan in the Mumbai Indians squad, will return to the UK this week and will work on his rehab with the Ecb medical department and Sussex County Cricket Club, respectively.
“Archer has been recovering from right elbow surgery. However, pushing through the discomfort whilst recently playing, hoping it will settle, has proven challenging. Therefore, it has been agreed for him to return to the UK for a period of rest and rehabilitation to give him the best opportunity for a full recovery,” the Ecb statement read.
The paceman has played five for Mi this season and has struggled to make an impact, taking two wickets and conceding 9.50 runs per over.

Mumbai, May 8 (Ians) Former India head coach Ravi Shastri believes Rohit Sharma’s challenges as skipper of five-time Ipl winners Mumbai Indians “have doubled” in the few years, citing the change in personnel in the team.
The addition of two new teams ahead of Ipl 2022 meant Hardik Pandya and Krunal Pandya went to Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants respectively, while Lasith Malinga and Kieron Pollard called time on their Ipl playing careers.
Mumbai’s issues also increased with Jofra Archer unavailable in Ipl 2022 due to long run with injuries and is still finding his rhythm in Ipl 2023, with Jasprit Bumrah ruled out this year due to long-standing back injury.

Chennai, May 6 (Ians) A high-quality bowling performance from Chennai Super Kings (Csk), led by young pacer Matheesha Pathirana’s 3-15, set the base for the four-time champions’ six-wicket win against Mumbai Indians in a one-sided Indian Premier League (Ipl) 2023 match at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium on Saturday.
Pathirana was on fire in his spell at the back end of the innings, giving away just 15 runs in his four overs, not conceding a single boundary while picking three wickets, denying Mumbai the finishing kick they needed after losing their top three batters in power-play as they ended up at 139/8.
He was also supported by Deepak Chahar and Tushar Deshpande taking two wickets each while Ravindra Jadeja had a scalp to his name. For Mumbai, barring Nehal Wadhera’s 64 off 50 balls and Piyush Chawla’s spell of 2-25, no other player stepped up to the occasion as Chennai chased down 140 with 14 balls to spare.

Chennai, May 6 (Ians) Chennai Super Kings captain Ms Dhoni has won the toss and elected to bowl first against Mumbai Indians in match 49 of Ipl 2023 at the Ma Chidambaram Stadium on Saturday.
Chennai and Mumbai are placed third and sixth respectively in the points table, but are separated by just one point. Mumbai are on a six-match winning streak in Chepauk and are coming into the match on the back of acing back-to-back 200+ chases in the competition.

The impact player rule, introduced from Ipl 2023, was first used in last year’s Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. So far, the rule has given the batting teams license to accumulate more runs, with 26 times scores above 200 being hit, as well as strike-rate, number of fours and sixes also witnessing a surge with the tournament largely being played on flat pitches.
"The impact player rule has definitely enhanced a lot of things (in the Ipl). As team management, you can choose when you want to use a batter or a bowler at a crucial time. It is something new and is going well so far.
"Hopefully, in the coming year, we will see the same rule in the domestic season for women’s cricket also. I will not be surprised if I see that rule implemented in the coming season of women’s domestic cricket," said Goswami in a virtual interaction organised by Jio Cinema,...

New Delhi, May 5 (Ians) England men’s cricket managing director Rob Key has predicted that fast bowler Jofra Archer will have a “massive impact” in the upcoming Ashes, set to begin from June 16 at Edgbaston.
Archer has picked 42 wickets in 13 matches since his debut in 2019 and has not played Test cricket for England since February 2021, owing to undergoing multiple operations for back and elbow injuries in the last two years.
He finally made a comeback to international cricket in 2023 through impressive performances in England’s white-ball tours to South Africa and Bangladesh. Archer is currently playing for Mumbai Indians in Ipl 2023, though he missed four matches in between due to an elbow niggle.
“We’re going to select for the Ireland test, so hopefully he’ll be available for selection for that, at this point, I’m assuming he will be. Then we’ve got a crop of bowlers, Ben...

Mohali, May 4 (Ians) Though Punjab Kings ended up on the losing side against Mumbai Indians, uncapped wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma enhanced his big-hitting credentials in the fag-end of the innings to be unbeaten on 49 off 27 balls, smashing five fours and two sixes.

Mumbai, May 1 (Ians) Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma was highly impressed by young Yashasvi Jaiswal’s century innings against his team in the Indian Premier League (Ipl) 2023 and said that the left-hander batter has taken his game to the next level this season.

However, Suryakumar Yadav’s 360-degree special (55 off 29) coupled with Cameron Green’s brisk 44 (26) and Tim David’s finishing heroics (45 not out off 14) helped Mi chase down the target with three balls to spare on Sunday night.

Mumbai, May 1 (Ians) Yashasvi Jaiswal’s magnificent 124 went in vain as Suryakumar Yadav (55) and Tim David (45 not out) carried five-time champions Mumbai Indians to a six-wicket win over Rajasthan Royals in the 1000th match of Indian Premier League (Ipl) in a run-fest at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday.
Mumbai looked in trouble when they were 104/3 in 12 overs in their Ipl 2023 clash. But Suryakumar smashed 20 runs off the 13th over from Kuldeep Sen and from there on, he never looked back, hitting eight fours and two sixes while David was brilliant in smacking two fours and five humongous sixes for Mumbai to go to seventh place in the points table with the highest successful chase in Ipl at the venue.
Mumbai didn’t have a great start to chasing 213 as captain Rohit Sharma was castled by a knuckleball from Sandeep Sharma in the second over. Cameron Green walked in and smashed...

Mumbai, April 30 (Ians) Young left-handed opener Yashasvi Jaiswal smashed the highest score by an uncapped Indian batter in the Ipl, a stunning 124 off 62 balls that propelled Rajasthan Royals to a massive 212/7 against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday.
In the 1000th Ipl game, Jaiswal shined the brightest by mixing solidity in technique and power in shots which were conventional and innovative while using the crease well in hitting 16 fours and eight sixes at a strike-rate of 200 in an innings where the next best score was just 18.
He made 41 runs off 23 balls in Power-play and amassed 44 runs off 25 balls in the middle overs, before smacking 39 runs off 14 balls in the death overs in a scintillating show of batsmanship.

New Delhi, April 27 (Ians) Tearaway England pacer Mark Wood has backed fellow fast-bowler Jofra Archer to be fit and ready to feature in the highly-anticipated Ashes starting from June 16, citing the battles he’s overcome in the last few years.
Archer has not played Test cricket since February 2021, picking 42 wickets in 13 matches since his debut in 2019 and had undergone multiple operations for back and elbow injuries in the last two years.
He finally made a comeback to international cricket in 2023 through impressive performances in England’s white-ball tours to South Africa and Bangladesh. Archer is currently playing for Mumbai Indians in Ipl 2023, though he missed four matches due to an elbow niggle.
“I feel for Jofra actually and I can sympathise with him quite a bit there. You feel like you’re just getting back and then you have a little setback and things happen. The curve’s never in a straight line is it,...

Mumbai, April 22 (Ians) Fit-again Jofra Archer made his comeback as Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bowl first against Sam Curran-led Punjab Kings in Match 31 of Ipl 2023 at the Wankhede Stadium, here on Saturday.
Mumbai, who are currently sixth in the points table, made just change as Archer returned to the playing XI.
“We are going to have a bowl first. Really nice to have some wins under the belt, winning is always nice and the atmosphere is good but the job is not done. Quite surprisingly nice and pleasant. Looking forward to this game. We have had some injuries but Jofra is back and that is the only change. Wankhede is a good pitch to bat on and it gets better as the game goes on, hopefully we restrict them and chase it down later,” said Rohit at the toss.

In his first game against Kolkata Knight Riders, Arjun had figures of 0/17 in two overs, before picking 1/18 in his 2.5 overs in his second match against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Now joining the list of former players being impressed by Arjun has been former India left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha, who noted that the youngster was able to execute the things he aimed for while defending 20 runs in the final over against Hyderabad, where Mumbai won by 14 runs.
"Bowling those overs, it’s not easy, especially when he was playing his second game. The things he tried to do, it happened for him. He was trying to swing the ball in and bowl those yorkers and he could do that, which shows his temperament, skill and how much he wants to work hard," he said in a virtual interaction organised by JioCinema, where he’s an Ipl expert.
