Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers (D) vetoed Republican Senate Bill 436, which would have allowed 14- and 15-year-old Wisconsin teenagers to work without permits.
Evers vetoed this bill during the Wisconsin State Council of Machinists Conference, which was held at a Capitol Square hotel alongside members of the labor group Wisconsin AFL-CIO.
“Growing up, it shouldn’t be worrying about getting injured on the job, or receiving a fair wage for their work, or being taken advantage of,” he stated shortly before issuing the veto. “It’s time that Republicans get real about the real pressing challenges, and I’ve put them on notice.”
The bill would effectively abolish work permits for 14- and 15-year-olds in Wisconsin, as state law changed in 2017 to remove this prerequisite for 16- and 17-year-olds. This law replaced references to “child labor” in state statutes with the “employment of minors.”

Padma Lakshmi hosted the cooking competition series “Top Chef” for 17 years. But she decided to leave her long-running gig to focus on her other series, Hulu’s “Taste the Nation,” and “other creative pursuits,” as she explained on social media. That means the long-running series is getting a new host, who has just been announced as Kristen Kish, the winner of season 10 of the series back in 2013. The new season will take place in Wisconsin — specifically the “unique culinary scenes in Milwaukee and Madison,” according to Bravo’s press release. Tom Colicchio and Gail Simmons will return as judges of the culinary smackdown.

TikTok’s plan to cement its operations in the United States has hit a snag. As the ByteDance-owned app responds to allegations that it spied on Western journalists via their user data, more governors around the country are banning its installation on state devices. As foreign leaders cheer on the American measures, TikTok is freezing a specific hiring program that supports its proposed U.S. security deal.
TikTok had been hiring engineers to create a third-party team that would be paid by the app but led by U.S. government officials. Now, according to Reuters, that hiring process is on hold. A TikTok rep told Reuters that the proposed agreement had yet been approved, which led to the hiring freeze. Other TikTok security positions are hiring “rapidly,” the spokesperson said.

TikTok‘s ties to the Chinese Communist Party have earned it a reputation as a threat to U.S. national security. In response to that talk, Republican governors across the country have issued executive orders that bar state employees from using the ByteDance-owned app on their government-owned devices.
Gubernatorial TikTok bans go back to 2020, when Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts barred the app amidst its feud with President Trump. A June 2022 report by BuzzFeed News alleged that Chinese officials had accessed U.S. user data, reigniting concerns about TikTok’s security. TikTok has become a popular political cause in the U.S. Capitol, and that trend has spread to Republican-controlled statehouses. South Dakota’s Kristi Noem (pictured above) sparked a wave of executive orders after she announced a TikTok ban on state devices.
At least four other Republican governors — in Texas, Maryland, South Carolina, and Oklahoma — have enacted restrictions on public TikTok use.

In the weeks leading up to Election Day, Mandela Barnes’ supporters felt frustrated. They believed in Barnes as the best Democrat to take on Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wisc.), and election forecasts all but guaranteed a Johnson victory. That frustration gave way to fury, however, once the ballots were counted on Wednesday. Barnes lost to Johnson by a single point.

Oshkosh, Wis. — As state assembly candidate Lori Palmeri knocked on the doors of old Victorians here last Sunday, Ben Wikler stood beside her and watched. There wasn’t much to see, at least to the casual observer: At each stop, Palmeri recited what’s known as a “mobilization” script, a brief exchange with likely Democratic voters to ensure they have a plan to cast their ballots.
But to Wikler, chair of Wisconsin’s Democratic Party, there was much to glean. How was Palmeri presenting to voters? What was her energy like?...

It was an opportunity for Obama to take a swipe at former president Donald Trump, who dogged him throughout his presidency with racist dog whistles that falsely casted doubt on his U.S. citizenship. “Mandela, get ready to dig up that birth certificate,” Obama teased to massive applause.

Brendan Dassey, one of the subjects of “Making a Murderer,” is seeking clemency after almost 13 years in prison for the murder of photographer Teresa Halbach.
According to the New York Times, his legal team on Wednesday launched a campaign to persuade the governor of Wisconsin Tony Evers to grant him clemency. According to the petition, Dassey is either asking for a pardon, which would result in his release from prison, or a commutation of his remaining sentence. This is one of the last remaining legal options available to Dassey.
While one of Dassey’s attorneys, Laura Nirider, hasn’t responded to TheWrap’s request for comment, she told Nyt that “It’s really a coalition of voices that are calling on the governor just to take a close review of this case — watch the videotapes, read the records.”

Kelly] Ayotte had her reelection stolen from her by out-of-staters…and Clinton’s razor-thin victory was stolen as well.”
