Halle Berry joined First Lady Dr. Jill Biden for a roundtable discussion that highlighted the importance of women’s health research at the University of Illinois on Thursday (January 11) in Chicago.
The 57-year-old actress spoke candidly about how her experience being treated for menopause alerted her to the need for better funding and research.
Keep reading to find out more…
She said that her experience was “just not good enough,” via the Chicago Tribune.
“I think money needs to be raised,” she said, “so that every woman has an opportunity to get quality premium care and not just told you have to just white-knuckle it, that it will eventually pass.”
The appearance comes in the leadup to the 2024 election, where President Joe Biden is expected to face off against Donald Trump again. Joe recently threw some pretty major shade at his competitor, who he previously beat in the 2020 election.

Queen Bey has arrived on the box office stage.
Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé — which Beyoncé wrote, directed and produced — started off its run on the big screen Thursday night with a better-than-expected $5 million in North American previews.
The concert movie is tracking for a debut in the $20 million range, which would mark the biggest opening for the first weekend of December. It should also top this weekend’s chart. And with a perfect 100 percent critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes and a near-perfect 99 percent audience score, Renaissance come in ahead of expectations.
The weekend after Thanksgiving is notoriously sluggish, and Renaissance is a welcome gift for exhibitors. It should also top this weekend’s chart.
Taylor Swift with her blockbuster Eras Tour movie, Beyoncé and her team decided to bypass Hollywood studios and pact and pact with AMC Theatres distribute Renaissance, which chronicles her recent world tour while also providing behind-the-scenes footage of the superstar.

This year’s slate of eight Best New Artist hopefuls at the Grammys is one of the strongest of the past decade, mixing big commercial names like Ice Spice and Noah Kahan with some of the most buzzworthy new musicians around like Fred Again, Victoria Monét and Gracie Abrams. Perhaps what stands out the most, though, is how much the category was shaken up when the nominations were revealed. What was thought to be a safe bet for Ice Spice has suddenly opened up into what’s one of the strongest categories in the general field this year.
A big part of that was the rise of Monét, whom many didn’t even consider a shoo-in for a nomination. Come Grammy nominations morning, though, she racked up a very impressive set of seven bids, including a sweep in the R&b field, a crucial Best Engineered Album nom, and what probably shocked people the most,...

This story about “The Color Purple” composers Nova Wav first appeared in the Race Begins issue of TheWrap magazine.
As far back as Steven Spielberg’s 1985 adaptation of Alice Walker’s game-changing novel, “The Color Purple” has always had a musical legacy. In addition to being scored by none other than Quincy Jones, the film boasted an earworm of an original song, “Miss Celie’s Blues (Sister),” that was co-penned by Lionel Richie. So it wasn’t shocking that “Purple” would spring to life in Broadway musical form, first in 2005 and then in a multi-Tony-winning revival 10 years later, which would launch the career of an exciting upstart named Cynthia Erivo.
When the prospect of an adaptation of the musical into an all-singing, all-dancing major film bloomed into reality, it was clear the team would need some new tunes to goose the already-rousing ones in the two-act musical. Enter Nova Wav,...

While appearing at the annual invitation-only CAA Amplify Summit on Tuesday in Ojai, Calif., the former NBA player and three-time championship winner opened up about his journey not only in understanding his daughter’s identity but affirming it. Speaking alongside From One Big Life to Another‘s Chris Paul in a conversation led by Lisa Metelus, co-head of Basketball at CAA, Wade recalled how he and actress Gabrielle Union first learned beyond their own feelings that Zaya was part of the LGBTQ+ community back in 2016 while the family was living in his hometown of Chicago.

CAA returned to Ojai to celebrate and discuss diversity, intersectionality and social justice initiatives across the entertainment industry as part of the agency’s sixth annual CAA Amplify summit.
Organized by a multicultural staff of CAA agents and executives, the daylong event Tuesday featured moderated panel conversations ranging from Planned Parenthood president and CEO Alexis McGill Johnson to singer-actor siblings Halle and Chloe Bailey.
CAA co-head of Motion Picture & International Film Groups Maha Dakhil kicked off the event noting the importance of acknowledging and trying to resolve the complex racial and social boundaries that can often hinder minority talents in Hollywood.
“One of our greatest powers at CAA has always been the power to convening highlight influential people of color from entertainment and industries beyond. The act of convening culture makers was a revolution we were waiting for,” Dakhil said. “[As people of color], we are not just in the room; we are the room.

‘The Little Mermaid’ Becomes a Blockbuster in the Philippines Amid Racist Backlash Elsewhere in Asia
The Little Mermaid may have bombed in some key movie markets in Asia, but in the Philippines, it has been a splashy success.
Disney’s live-action remake of its 1989 animated classic is currently the biggest blockbuster of the year in the Southeast Asian country, having earned $5.8 million and surpassed Hollywood’s two biggest global hits of the year: Universal’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($2.2 million) and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ($4.7 million).
“The Philippines, obviously, is a standout market for us,” says John Hsu, Disney’s senior vp studio business in Asia Pacific. “It’s rare, but it’s the biggest territory for The Little Mermaid in Southeast Asia by far, our third-highest-grossing market in Asia-Pacific behind Australia and Japan, and our 11th-highest-grossing territory globally,” he says.

When Chloë took the stage at Popsugar Play/Ground on June 2, one word came to mind: confidence. Sporting a sheer bodysuit, a navy blue leather cape, and sky-high platform heels, the multihyphenate flooded the stage with a whole lot of presence, even though she was up there entirely alone. That's right: no backup dancers, musicians, or even a DJ. It was simply Chloë, with nothing but her voice and her talent and her confidence to get the crowd going.
And boy, was the crowd going. Play/Ground attendees had spent the whole day in downtown Los Angeles partaking in celebrity trainer-led workouts, self-care stations, and tasty bites - and now it was all culminating in a special performance and intimate chat with Chloë. She took the stage right after a social hour hosted by SweeTARTS (with DJ Amrit spinning beats), so everyone was already bouncing in their seats, excited for...

The Little Mermaid is getting doused in select foreign markets amid a racist backlash over the casting of Black actress Halle Bailey in the role of Ariel.
The movie has grossed a mere $3.6 million in its first 10 days of release in China, by far the worst showing among Disney’s live-action adaptations. It is also struggling badly in South Korea, where it has earned $4.4 million through June 4. Sources close to the movie, as well as box office analysts, say Disney knew Little Mermaid could face challenges, but is surprised by the extent of the backlash and its impact.
The social media outcry over Bailey’s casting has been particularly vociferous in both markets. Sources believe this has resulted in unverified audience reviews bashing the movie. In South Korea, such reviews have even made headlines.
Negative audience reviews have also populated social media in China. And just before the film opened in that country,...

Amid racist backlash toward Disney’s live-action remake of “The Little Mermaid”, Halle Bailey just received some love from singer and actress, Stephanie Mills, who originated Dorothy in The Wiz on Broadway.
Mills took to Instagram to compare her experience on the seven-time Tony Award winning musical version of “The Wizard of Oz”, which had an all-Black cast, to what Bailey has been going through since news of her Ariel casting broke in July 2019.
“I know what this baby @hallebailey has been dealing with,” Mills began in the caption of her heartfelt post. “I got so much hate mail, I was told Judy Garland ‘is turning over in her grave’. All because a little black girl was playing a [role] that was once played by a white girl. It’s sad to see the same thing is happening to this beautiful, talented, smart and intelligent actress.

Stephanie Mills is opening up about her experience playing Dorothy in the Broadway musical The Wiz and all the “hate mail” she received for playing a character that a white woman played before. Stephanie Mills, who originated the role of Dorothy in Broadway’s The Wiz nearly 50 years ago, says she can relate to Halle Bailey, the star of Disney’s new live-action film The Little Mermaid, and the racist backlash she’s been the target of since casting was announced.
Mills wrote a letter to the “beautiful and talented” Bailey, who plays Ariel in the remake, and shared it on Twitter.
In the letter, “I touch on the similarities I experienced as a young black girl playing Dorothy 50 years ago in #TheWiz on Broadway,” Mills added. “So happy for her. #BlackGirlMagic”
Mills relates that she received the same backlash for taking on the role of Dorothy in the reimagining of Frank L. Baum’s classic book-turned-film The Wizard of Oz. The 1939 movie adaptation starred Judy Garland as Dorothy. At the time she made her Broadway debut in 1974, Mills was 17. (For her part,...

If anyone knows how to get the right shade of red for Black hair, it’s Camille Friend. The Oscar-nominated hair department head, whose credits include “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” experimented with adding color into Lupita Nyong’o’s hair, and now she’s doing it again. This time, it was for Halle Bailey in Disney’s live-action “The Little Mermaid.” But doing so didn’t come cheap.
Her challenge was taking Disney’s most famous redhead, Princess Ariel, and creating a look for Bailey that would work. On top of that, maintaining Bailey’s natural hair was an important requirement she needed to meet.
Bailey, who sports long locs, wanted to stay true to her Black heritage. And maintaining them without a wig would herald an important moment for representation and Bailey’s identity, as the movie presents Disney’s first Black Ariel (and first Black princess in a live-action movie.

The Little Mermaid’s brain trust of director Rob Marshall and producer John DeLuca decided early on that verisimilitude was the name of the game. They knew that their live-action reimagining of the 1989 animated classic couldn’t have it both ways, so they opted for photorealism at every turn instead of a hybrid of realistic and fantastical elements. That meant Ariel’s (Halle Bailey) beloved sea-creature sidekicks of Flounder (Jacob Tremblay), Sebastian (Daveed Diggs) and Scuttle (Awkwafina) had to be reinvented as well.
“We knew right from the beginning that we were gonna create a photoreal world underwater,” Marshall tells The Hollywood Reporter. “We’ve had an animated film, but … we’re now in a live-action genre. We want to believe we’re in that space, so there was no version of creating a Flounder that didn’t look like a fish. There was no version of creating a crab...

The Little Mermaid’s Halle Bailey and Jonah Hauer-King created a special bond while filming Rob Marshall’s live-action reimagining of Disney’s 1989 animated classic, and Hauer-King isn’t afraid to be a fanboy of his mega-talented co-star. The Atlanta and London natives play the roles of mermaid Princess Ariel and Prince Eric, respectively, which Jodi Benson and Christopher Daniel Barnes memorably brought to life 34 years ago in John Musker and Ron Clements’ animated film. Thus, Bailey and Hauer-King always approached the material with reverence and respect for the original film, even if their story took a couple of detours to familiar destinations.

Not that the 24-year-old singer, songwriter, and actor pays attention to it, seeing as she occasionally removes apps like Twitter and Instagram from her phone when the negative comments get overwhelming.
"It's been hard, difficult, [and] unsettling," Chlöe tells Popsugar of dealing with constant judgment from some of her biggest critics online. "I could go down the whole negative path but I have to learn to not really care and to know that as long as I am being authentically and unapologetically myself, then I'm good."
"Everything that I'm doing right now I've prayed for and God has given it to me."
Between her viral series "Swarm," freshly-dropped solo debut album "In Pieces," lead role in Peacock's "Praise This,...

Chlöe Bailey has addressed the criticism about her recent collaboration with the “scandal-scarred” Chris Brown on single “How Does It Feel.” In an interview with Audacy’s V-103 podcast, the singer dismissed the negative reaction, saying it should be about the music.
“I always just wanna let the music speak for itself,” Bailey said. “And to be honest, no matter what I do, people always find things to say about it, so I’m used to it. I just choose to ignore it. People have every right to their opinions,...

In the pleasantly amusing “Praise This,” Chloe Bailey is the self professed nonreligious Sam, a musical artist in the making who finds her niche in Atlanta’s competitive gospel youth choir scene. Director Tina Gordon crafts a musical that’s carried through by a charming cast and highly entertaining ensemble performances. Streaming April 7 on Peacock, “Praise This” adds a mostly delightful entry to the genre, even if it doesn’t offer a unique take. More successfully it acts as a winning introductory calling card to the acting and musical talents of its rising star, the slightly-older sister of upcoming “The Little Mermaid” actor Halle Bailey and one-half of the sibling R&b duo Chloe x Halle.
The story starts with Sam forced to leave Los Angeles by her dad because of some rebellious behavior. He entrusts her care to her aunt and uncle (Kendrick Cross and Janora McDuffie), but the...

Ariel is heading to China.
Disney’s live-action The Little Mermaid has locked down a release date in China on May 26, day-and-date with the film’s North American launch.
Directed by Rob Marshall, The Little Mermaid stars Halle Bailey as Ariel and Melissa McCarthy as the villainous Ursula. Javier Bardem, Awkwafina, Jacob Tremblay and Jonah Hauer-King co-star in the film, which retells the 1989 animated classic’s tale of a mermaid who longs to join the human world. Oscar-winner Alan Menken returns to update his score and pen a new song featuring lyrics from Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Disney’s live-action remakes have tended to perform well in China, but they’ve been on a gradual downward trajectory in recent years. The Jungle Book earned $150 million in 2016, followed by Beauty and the Beast with $85.7 million in 2017, The Lion King (2019) with $120 million, Alladin (2019) with $53 million, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (2019) at $48.8 million, Mulan (2020) with $40 million and Cruella (2021) with $24 million.
