What’s Good: When you’ve Manoj Bajpayee listed in the cast, asking what’s good gets kind of redundant
What’s Bad: This wouldn’t get much attention to be ignored as yet another ‘festival film’ which talks about the systematic imbalance, it’s more than that
Loo Break: This will keep you and your pants hooked till the end
Watch or Not?: Yes, to witness Manoj Bajpayee’s unmatched range
Language: Hindi
Available On: Theatrical release
Runtime: 162 Minutes

Fighting is for the Soul, Not for the Belly
A Tribal Villager
Joram is an authentically crafted, brutal and raw depiction of the lives of tribal people in India. It is an eye-opening and important piece of cinema that will tug at the viewer’s emotions. Director Devashish Makhija has crafted a film that is relentless in its exposé of various socio-economic issues including political landscape, gentrification, mining, deforestation, etc. This is as realistic as any film can ever get to in the portrayal of the cruelty human beings dish on other human beings in the name of caste and the social hierarchy of the so-called people who aim to use the ‘Power of Status’ to do as they please. The dog-eat-dog mentality is where anyone will do anything to get ahead in life, to make a statement, to cover up mistakes and where the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.

Why do we watch films? We watch films to escape from our mundane lives, to spend a few hours imagining ourselves in a world where everyone and everything is perfect. Jhini Bini Chadariya (The Brittle Thread) is not a film we would want to escape to. It is a film that brutally depicts life in Varanasi from which there is no escape for all those who live there. But films like this need to be seen as only then will our eyes open to understanding life in different corners of the world. No other Indian film will ever portray Varanasi as a bleakly beautiful character and therein lies the strength of this film and its unforgiving impact on the viewer.
Director Ritesh Sharma has made a film very close to his heart by using the city as a character in his film to tell a story of love, hate, loss and suffering.

IFFKIn the film, which had its Indian premiere at the 26th Iffk in Kerala, two parallel love stories run side by side, with neither able to escape the divisive forces that surround them.CrisInside his little weaving shop in Varanasi, Shahdab has a moment with his mannequin, wrapped in a sari, falling towards him. As their foreheads touch, Shahdab looks tenderly at the mannequin. It is a pretty shot and what took me to the screening of the film, The Brittle Thread, which had its Indian premiere at the International Film Festival of Kerala (Iffk). The love stories in The Brittle Thread are like a human chain forming circles around the chaos of what goes on in Varanasi, where the film is shot and told. Its maker Ritesh Sharma is a child of Varanasi, growing up to the sound of temple bells and conches, and watching the fish pond in the mosque across the street.
