Exclusive: Jay Roach has signed with UTA in all areas. He moves after a long run at WME.
Roach, who last directed Bombshell, the expose about Roger Ailes and the predation of women aspiring for on air jobs at Fox News, is the director of blockbuster franchises Austin Powers and Meet The Parents.
Roach is an EP and directed all eight episodes of the series High Desert for Apple TV+, and he’s also working on F*cked Up College Dream, inspired by his own experiences of not sleeping as a freshman at Stanford, because of the anxiety of not measuring up. He was forced to find ways around the dilemma, and clearly it worked out as he graduated with a degree in economics and got into USC Film School. He set that one up at HBO.

A film based on the “Duke Nukem” video-game franchise is finally coming to the big screen. Legendary has acquired the rights to adapt Gearbox’s franchise into a feature film, and they’ve brought aboard the creators of “Cobra Kai” as producers.
“Duke Nukem,” which first launched as a macho first-person shooter game in 1991, will be produced by Legendary along with Counterbalance Entertainment’s Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg (Cobra Kai) and Marla Studio’s Jean Julien Baronnet.
The video games saw the title character as a hulking, gun toting, cigar chomping, ass-kicking hero fighting off aliens and rescuing hot babes in an unironic, ’90s action style. While the game’s humor and tone may be dated, the video game’s design and technical achievements have made it a successful franchise, and future installments, including most recently “Duke Nukem Forever” in 2011 after Gearbox acquired the rights to the franchise,...

Exclusive: After aggressively pursuing rights, Paramount Pictures has preemptively acquired the Wayward Children fantasy book series by Seanan McGuire. With six books already published and a seventh installment coming in early 2022, the studio plans to build a franchise around this universe of characters and stories.
Sources say Paramount’s Motion Picture Group president Emma Watts has had her eye on the series for some time and was hands on in making sure the studio landed the rights. Insiders say the studio views the series as a possible franchise given the huge fanbase that is behind it, and add it has already drawn interest from top talent to be a part of it.
The series adaptations will be produced by Pouya Shahbazian. The series takes place in Eleanor West’s School for Wayward Children, a boarding school for people who have returned home from magical fantasy worlds and have trouble readjusting to their old lives.

Exclusive: Dan Gilroy is set to direct his original script Faster, Cheaper, Better, a character-driven drama that covers an inevitable sweeping changes coming fast that maybe some of us have considered with news reports about how the cross-country trucking industry will be accomplished without human beings in the cars.

“The Fast and the Furious” producer Neal Moritz is suing Universal for breach of oral contract, breach of implied contract and promissory fraud, according to papers obtained by TheWrap.
The suit, which was filed Wednesday in Los Angeles County Superior Court, said that Moritz was removed from the “Fast & the Furious” spinoff “Hobbs and Shaw,” starring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham, as lead producer on the project just days before shooting was set to begin. The lawsuit said that Moritz should either be reinstated as a lead producer on “Hobbs and Shaw” or that Universal would be “liable to Moritz for tens of millions of additional dollars in reputational damage that he will inevitably suffer if the studio fails to fully credit him.”

Exclusive: The Fast and The Furious spinoff Hobbs and Shaw opens next summer, but the Universal flick might be doing wheelies in the courts by then too.
Franchise producer Neal Moritz today sued the Donna Langley-run studio for breach of oral contract and promissory fraud over being tossed out the door of the spinoff led by Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham. “This case presents a classic example of Hollywood greed,” reads the filing made this morning in Los Angeles Superior Court, opening in classic style from Tinseltown heavyweight attorney Dale Kinsella.
The long and the short of it is that Moritz, who is no stranger to litigation, wants to be reinstated as lead producer on Hobbs and Shaw, which just started shooting, or be paid out “tens of millions dollars in damages in lost compensation” from the Comcast-owned studio.

Hollywoodnews.com: As studios continue snatching up literary series in hopes of finding the next “Twilight” or “Harry Potter” franchise, Lionsgate announces that it has acquired the Ya trilogy “Chaos Walking” for adaptation, and will begin with the opening book, “The Knife of Never Letting Go.”
Much like “The Hunger Games,” Patrick Ness’s story takes place in a dystopian future, only here, an infection called the Noise suddenly makes all thought audible, which means privacy has vanished.

I have not read the books, but can understand why studios are interested to duplicate the excitement for Gary Ross' Hunger Games adaptation.
