Cringe comedy and pathos converge with unlikely grace in Dad & Step-Dad, the debut feature from director Tynan DeLong. Expanded significantly from short films that DeLong crafted with recurring collaborators Colin Burgess (recent star of Ryan Martin Brown’s debut feature Free Time) and Anthony Oberbeck, the premise of the feature is nonetheless pretty straightforward. On a weekend trip to an Airbnb in upstate New York, titular dad Jim (Burgess) and step-dad Dave (Oberbeck) quarrel incessantly, both over the affection of teenage ward Branson (played hilariously by adult Brian Fiddyment) and for inconsequential paternal bragging rights over the other. Passive aggression […]

Colin Burgess and Anthony Oberbeck star in Dad & Step-Dad, an independent comedy film they co-wrote with director Tynan DeLong. It follows Jim and Dave, a dad and a step-dad, as they struggle with bonding during a weekend upstate with Branson, the 13-year-old son they share. It’s about family, communication, insecurity and the fragility of the male ego. On this episode, Burgess and Oberbeck describe the development of their comedy tastes and take us back to the improvised shorts that preceded the feature, where they were able to hone their characters and comedic sensibility before growing the project to feature-length. After Blue (Bertrand Mandico)
In the post-apocalyptic nightmare of After Blue, humanity—or what’s left of it—roams a former paradise turned wasteland. The Armageddon that wrecked the Earth in some undetermined past left no machines behind, no screens, and, perhaps most conspicuously, no men. In the distant planet the human race fled to, and which writer-director Bertrand Mandico’s film is named after, “they were the first to die,” we’re warned early on: “their hairs grew inside them, and killed them.” As it was for its predecessor, The Wild Boys, After Blue is suffused in a feverish ecstasy, that wild excitement that comes from a watching one world crumble and another jutting into being from scratch, a vision of...

"Really, really, funny." NoBudge has debuted a brand new official trailer for an indie comedy called Dad & Step-Dad, made by filmmakers Tynan DeLong and Colin Burgess. After initially releasing on the streaming service NoBudge last year, this is getting a proper VOD release (with limited theatrical showings) starting in March. Here is the full intro to this cinema creation via Indiewire: "Dad & Step-Dad was filmed in just four days during summer 2021, with a production budget of $18,000. The feature is entirely improvised and based on an outline and multiple rehearsals... The film uses cinéma vérité, documentary filmmaking, Asmr, and Japanese environmental music as cinematic inspirations." Jim and Dave, a dad and a step-dad, have trouble bonding during a 3-day weekend upstate with their son, Branson. It's entirely improvised, based off of a robust outline + several rehearsals. Starring Colin Burgess and Anthony Oberbeck, with Brian Fiddyment and Clare O'Kane.

Actor Kate Winslet has had a couple of high-profile marriages and break-ups over the course of her career. But ultimately, she felt going through divorce gave her children good lessons about life.

Vladimir Putin apologist Oliver Stone is bemoaning the state of the world, and as evidence he cited the filmmaking choices of actors like Ryan Gosling and Keanu Reeves.
In a non-sequitur-filled interview with City Am, the longtime movie director and medium-time crank alleged that by agreeing to play Ken in Barbie, Gosling contributed to the “infantilization of Hollywood.”
“Ryan Gosling is wasting his time if he’s doing that shit for money. He should be doing more serious films. He shouldn’t be a part of this infantilization of Hollywood,” Stone said. The man whose film JFK to advanced conspiracy theories about the assassination of a US president then complained that because of people like Gosling, cinema today is “all fantasy, fantasy, fantasy, including all the war pictures: fantasy, fantasy.”
Stone later issued an apology for “speaking ignorantly” in his comments about Barbie in a social media statement posted on January 22nd.

The Day Today was making Fake News its business long before it was even a twinkle in Donald Trump’s eye. Armando Iannucci and Chris Morris’ TV translation of their On the Hour BBC Radio 4 series parodied the gravely serious, scare-mongering, hyperbolic news style of the early 1990s with absurd, nonsensical headlines: “Portillo’s teeth removed to boost Pound. Exploded cardinal preaches sermon from fish tank. And where now for man raised by puffins?”
With a comedy team including Steve Coogan (who road-tested Alan Partridge on TV for the first time here), Rebecca Front, David Schneider and Doon Mackichan, the show didn’t aim to hoodwink its audience or even the public figures in the news, the target was the news itself. And if speaking truth to power is the essence of good satire, then the target doesn’t come much more powerful than the media, and satires don...

San Francisco, May 24 (Ians) Virgin Orbit, the bankrupt rocket company founded by British billionaire Sir Richard Branson, has shut down operations after selling its business to three aerospace companies for about $36 million in a bankruptcy auction.
Rocket Lab bid $16.1 million for the company’s headquarters in Long Beach, California. Stratolaunch was awarded its $17 million “stalking horse” bid for Virgin Orbit’s 747 jet.
Launcher, a subsidiary of Vast Space, bought the company’s facility in Mojave, California for $2.7 million, reports CNBC.
“As Virgin Orbit embarks on this path, the management and employees would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to all stakeholders,” the company said in a statement.
In April, Virgin Orbit laid off nearly 85 per cent of its workforce — about 675 employees — after it failed to secure key funding.
Rocket Lab said the Virgin Orbit assets will improve its production, manufacturing, and test capabilities, especially in developing its larger Neutron rocket.

Peter Gabriel first learned about former U.S. President Jimmy Carter in Rolling Stone. He doesn’t remember the exact date, but a 1975 article about Georgia’s Allman Brothers Band and their support for Carter’s presidential campaign is likely what caught his eye.
“I’ve always been interested in American politics, and I was fascinated to read that the Allman Brothers had played a critical role in getting some early funding for this ‘peanut farmer with principles,’” Gabriel reminisces on a recent Zoom call from his Real World Studios in Southwest England.

Singer Niall Horan would love to have his doppelganger friend Allen Leech or Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio to play him in a ‘One Direction’ biopic.
The 29-year-old singer wants fellow Irishman Allen, 41, who he is often compared to, or the 48-year-old “Titanic” star to portray him if there is ever a movie about the popular boy band — which was also comprised of Harry Styles, 29, Louis Tomlinson, 31, Liam Payne, 29, and formerly, Zayn Malik, 30, reports aceshowbiz.com.

It comes after Allen tipped Niall to play a young Tom Branson — his role in the period drama — if there is ever a spin-off of ‘Downton Abbey’.

Chris Smith, director of the new HBO docuseries, “Branson,” says Richard Branson didn’t want the opening scene, which shows him recording an after-death farewell video, included in the docuseries.

It would be easy to fill this column with worthwhile movies that recently played theaters or notable TV shows making their return, but there’s too much interesting stuff to waste space on the familiar. So let’s get that out of the way up top.
Netflix viewers will be able to catch up with Bardo, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, and White Noise, all of which arrive on the service after brief theatrical runs.

It took a long, long time for Richard Branson to achieve his goal of blasting off into space, but it finally occurred last year after more than a billion dollars invested through his company Virgin Galactic.
“Nothing could prepare you for the view of Earth from space,” he said upon landing. But in a new interview with Deadline, he says the experience did not imbue him that a transcendent “overview effect,” the sense of awe about our place in universe or the perspective of a planet without natural political boundaries, unlike what other astronauts have reported feeling.
“I don’t think there was like a lightning bolt moment in the space flight,” he tells Deadline. “It was extraordinary. It was everything I’d dreamt it would be… But I’ll let you know when I get the thunderbolt.”

Chris Smith’s HBO docuseries about Richard Branson doesn’t shy away from controversies involving his spaceflight company Virgin Galactic, bid for U.K. government support of Virgin Atlantic during the pandemic or the paradoxes around the airline’s eco-messaging. But for the most part, “Branson” concentrates on all that the tycoon has accomplished in his 72 years.
Shortly before Branson became the first passenger to reach space in his own spacecraft last year, the business magnate sat down with Smith to reflect on the benefits and drawbacks of being a lifelong daredevil.
“It’s important if you lead a full life to share,” says Branson, founder of the Virgin Group. “It’s important for your children, your grandchildren, and your great-grandchildren. And it’s important for other people who may want to get inspired.”
While Smith’s team had been sorting through archival footage of Branson in preparation to make docuseries...

It’s almost the end of another year…another grueling, relentless, shuffle around the pitiless sun. But before that: more content! HBO Max’s list of new releases for December 2022 is filled with a handful of exciting original TV series.
December 2022 truly is TV’s time to shine on HBO Max. Things get started on day one with the release of Gossip Girl season 2 (Dec. 1). That will be followed by His Dark Materials on Dec. 5. Adapting The Amber Spyglass, this season promises to be the most action-packed yet for the BBC/HBO fantasy collaboration. December 8 sees the arrival of Doom Patrol season 4. This DC comic property doesn’t have the cultural cache of some of its CW contemporaries but when it’s rolling, it might be one of the best comic series around.
Now that Warner has mostly scuttled its simultaneous streaming/theatrical release strategy, there aren’t many big original movies to speak of.

The HBO Original four-part docuseries Branson, directed by Chris Smith (HBO’s “100 Foot Wave”), debuts Thursday, December 1 (10:00-11:00 p.m. Et/Pt) on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max. New episodes will debut at the same time on subsequent Thursdays. Sixteen days before Richard Branson is scheduled to make a potentially historic flight as the first passenger to reach space in his own spacecraft in July 2021, the billionaire entrepreneur sits down for a conversation with acclaimed filmmaker Chris Smith, in light of the risk that lies ahead. Smith ultimately takes us on an expansive and intimate 70-year journey, from Branson’s upbringing as the son of a spirited, tough-love mother in Britain, to his pursuits of extreme, personal daredevilry that serve both to grow his businesses’ brands and feed his insatiable, lifelong thirst for high-stakes adventure. With added insight from family members, business associates,...

The HBO comedy series "Avenue 5" is returning for a second season, continuing to deliver a very disturbing yet hilarious vision of the future. The series is set 40 years from now on a commercial space cruise. It was supposed to be up there for eight weeks, but after a technical mishap, the trip is now going to take 3.5 years. But the trip is about to get even longer in the second season.
Commercial space travel isn't the only thing that has changed in this future though. I recently spoke to star Hugh Laurie ("House") and creator Armando Iannucci ("Veep") about the show's vision of what's to come, including Toto Potus, an additional President of the United States that looks like some sort of Alexa device, which is both terrifying and apparently absolutely possible, according to Iannucci and Laurie.

To mark the occasion, Cleopatra Entertainment has acquired North American rights to the Bill Nighy-narrated concert and documentary film The Tubular Bells 50th Anniversary Tour.
Filmed over three nights at London’s world-famous Royal Festival Hall, the feature incorporates the original music with dance and acrobatic feats by the Circa Contemporary Circus, as well as performances of “Moonlight Shadow,” Oldfield’s biggest single hit, along with “Summit Day,” from his Guitars album, and “The Gem,” a new work by musical director Robin Smith.
