*full disclosure: a DVD screener of this film was provided by Mti Home VIdeo.
Director/writer: Rolfe Kanefsky.
Mti Home Video's latest release is one part noir thriller with a second story involving a surreal world in an isolated locale. This film stars Steven Bauer (Scarface), Steven Man and Katherine Randolph. Director Rolfe Kanefsky might be best known for his work and After Dark's Nightmare Man and here he trades in the horror genre for a moderately paced thriller. 1 in the Gun is really two stories in one, with the first part a standard noir film and the second half a surrealist experiment in a character's dreamscape. This reviewer preferred the first story, while the second seemed more like filler.
The first noir story involves a quadrangle or a four character love/lust story. There is a lot of loving going on with Randolph's character Katrina, the center of much of the attention.

Katherine Randolph uses her charms to wangle out of a sticky situation in 1 in the Gun.
Hidden agendas, dangerous seductions and double- and triple-crosses are the order of the day in 1 in the Gun, a film noir-styled crime thriller from writer/director Rolfe Kanefsky (Nightmare Man).
The movie begins with passions igniting between Katrina (Katherine Randolph, Jarhead), the beautiful wife of a wealthy businessman, and Mickey (Steven Man, Edge of Nowhere), a homeless, struggling artist who has been hired to paint their home. Needless to say, someone’s gonna get hurt…
This one reads like the kind of straight-to-dvd movie that would have trickled out to video stores at the end of the 1990s, particularly with its genre-friendly cast, which includes Robert Davi (The Dukes), James Russo (Public Enemies) and Steven Bauer (Scarface).
That said, 1 in the Gun received a very small release...

Combining traditional noir with esoteric horror themes, Rolfe Kanefsky’s latest thriller is a unique hall of funhouse mirrors that mixes the director’s signature dark humor with a nightmarish landscape that feels new for the prolific director. Steven Man is Mickey Lewis, a down and out artist type who gets into a “cart accident” at the grocery store with the gorgeous Katrina Webb (Katherine Randolph) and she offers him a job painting her house. Of course, her invite is so laced with honey-burnished sexuality, Mickey would be a fool to pass it up. She’s unhappily married to Arthur (Steven Bauer) and as in any noir; Katrina becomes the femme fatale offering sex for murder.
