First published in 1927, The Hardy Boys series of books created by Edward Stratemeyer has sold more than 70 million copies and been translated into more than 25 languages. The novels have been revised, rebooted, and reimagined at least four times since their debut and the eponymous characters have appeared in everything from comic books and TV shows to video games and cartoons.
Possibly the real mystery here is why there hasn’t been a television adaptation of this story on-air since the late 1990s, particularly when remakes and reboots have been all the rage for years. The CW currently has a hit Nancy Drew series on the air, and shows like Riverdale, Pretty Little Liars, and Veronica Mars have spent years reinforcing the idea that teenagers are surprisingly great at solving crimes. You remember those classic Nancy Drew mystery novels? Well, after CBS passed on a Nancy Drew series last year, NBC is picking it up and redeveloping it with the same creative team that consists of Tony Phelan and Joan Rater (Grey's Anatomy). However, the series will move forward with a different cast. When the project was set up at CBS, Person of Interest actress Sarah Shahi was cast in the role of Nancy.
Thanks to THR, we have a brief plot synopsis for the NBC series:
"When the author of the most famous female teen detective series is thrust into a real-life murder mystery, who does she turn to for help? Her two best friends from childhood, who were the inspiration for all those books, and the women who have a real ax to grind about the way their supposed best friend chose to portray them all those years ago.

They say life imitates art and for Marlon Wayans, life is exactly where he’s pulling inspiration from with his new pilot, “Marlon.” The inspired-by-real-life project will follow the struggles of a single father as he tries to tone down his inappropriate nature and co-parent with his ex-wife and polar opposite. NBC has claimed the pilot and 3 Arts Entertainment, along with Wayans Brothers Entertainment, will produce it in a yet-to-be-determined location. Rumor has it, however, that Los Angeles or Chicago will play home to the semiautobiographical project. Vickie Thomas Casting will populate the wacky comedy and round it out with a handful of remaining roles. CBS is looking to reinvent a beloved childhood classic with “Drew.” The pilot will pull from the novels following the adventures of the young Nancy Drew, the observationally endowed detective created by Edward Stratemeyer. However, the project will put its own twist on the story,...

Nancy Drew, the Hardy Boys, and Encyclopedia Brown comprise a triumvirate of great twentieth-century American child-detective book series. But while the first two were created by the same person (Edward Stratemeyer), the latter came from the brain of Donald J. Sobol, who has died at the age of 87. First reported this morning in a bare-bones Publishers Weekly tweet, Sobol's death occurred last Wednesday, according to Entertainment Weekly. The series, starring the titular character (whose real name was Leroy Brown, no relation to the Jim Croce song), began in 1963 and has since stretched to more than two dozen titles. Each book follows the same format: a collection of curious and unrelated mysteries take place in the town of Idaville. Readers are encouraged to try to solve them all alongside young Encyclopedia Brown, whose father is the police chief. The answers to each puzzle appear in the back of the...

Columbia Pictures has acquired "Swift," a pitch by Barry Sonnenfeld and Ben David Grabinski that is described as a reimagining of the Tom Swift adventure novels. Project is being developed as a Sonnenfeld (Men in Black) directing vehicle. The Tom Swift character first appeared in a series of books that launched in 1910. The original books were outlined by Edward Stratemeyer, written by ghostwriters and credited to pseudonym Victor Appleton. Sonnenfeld and Grabinski's version would feature Swift as one-half of a father-son team who are among the greatest inventors of all time. Though Hollywood has long been intrigued by the boy genius, Tom Swift has yet to make it to the big screen. 20th Century Fox put together an expensive Tom Swift musical in the late 1960s as a Gene Kelly directing vehicle, but it was nixed at the eleventh hour. Another Swift pic was planned in the mid-'70s, but it was also cancelled.

That’s “Swift” as in “Tom Swift,” the fictional inventor/adventurer concocted by Edward Stratemeyer in the early 1900s for a series of young adult books. The pitch comes from “Men in Black” director Barry Sonnenfeld and Ben David Grabinski, according to a report today in Variety. The article also reveals that Albie Hecht, who had a Tom Swift project of his own, is now in with Sonnenfeld & company to produce.
The plan laid out by Sonnenfeld’s and Grabinski’s pitch calls for a re-imagining of the Tom Swift character. The focus will actually be on a father-son configuration, both of them superstars in the inventing community. No further details were revealed about the story, though it is strongly suggested that Sonnenfeld will direct.
Sonnenfeld hasn’t delivered a major hit as director since 2002’s “Men in Black II.” It was followed by “Rv” in 2006 and a number of TV projects,...

Columbia Pictures has acquired "Swift," from director Barry "Men In Black" Sonnenfeld and Ben David Grabinski, as a potential feature film franchise updating the Tom Swift series of adventure novels. Debuting in 1910, the 'Tom Swift' character was presented as a young inventor in five series of juvenile science fiction/adventure novels, created by Edward Stratemeyer, founder of the Stratemeyer Syndicate book firm, to "take advantage of the market for children's science adventure". The books were written by several ghostwriters over the years, published under the collective pseudonym 'Victor Appleton'. Each series focused on Tom.s inventions, a number of which pre-dated actual inventions. Translated into several languages, the books have sold more than 20 million copies worldwide. Sonnenfeld and Grabinski's version reportedly would feature Swift as one-half of a father-son team who are among the greatest inventors of all time. Albie "Lemony Snicket" Hecht will produce with Sonnenfeld...

Frank and Joe Hardy are over 80 years old but you'd never know it by looking at them. The brothers have been solving mysteries since pre-World War II but still remain teenagers. Well, after many years of sleuthing, it sounds like the Hardy Boys will finally be growing up -- and you won't believe who they've grown into.
The Hardy Boys were created in 1926 by Edward Stratemeyer, head of the Stratemeyer Syndicate. The Stratemeyer Syndicade was a publishing company that made its reputation publishing popular childrens' books of the day like The Bobbsey Twins and Tom Swift. The Hardy Boys books, though credited to Franklin W. Dixon, were secretly written by various ghostwriters, as was the case with all of the syndicate's properties. The original tales of the amateur detectives have been reprinted and revised many times over the years to reflect current times. In addition, several spin-off series of books have been published,...
