At 24 years-old, Jason Hochberg (Fred Hechinger) is officially too old to be into summer camp. But he passes up a law internship anyway to come to Camp Pineway and be a counselor one last time. Once Jason arrives, he’s not only the oldest counselor there; he’s immediately ostracized for his childlike eagerness toward camp activities. The rest of the counselors mainly have flirting and partying in mind.
Bobby (Billy Bryk) wants girls to like him, but he tries too hard and turns them off. Chris (Finn Wolfhard) already has a thing with Shannon (Krista Nazaire), but they’re hiding it from Bobby. Mike (D’Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai) and Demi (Pardis Saremi) are a stereotypically gorgeous couple. The rest of the teens fit easily into high-school comedy archetypes — Ezra (Matthew Finlan) is queer and loves theater, Ari (Daniel Gravelle) is the self-serious film buff, Miley (Julia Doyle) is the self-righteous vegan...

The 2023 Toronto International Film Festival is underway. While this is one of the festivals where a lot of awards season contenders start getting buzz as we head into the fall and winter months, it's also a place where hidden horror gems can sneak up on you as we head into Halloween. Like many film festivals, TIFF has its own genre programming block called Midnight Madness where horror, thrillers, and the wilder side of filmmaking can be experienced. This year, a handful of titles have been getting some decent buzz, ranging from "Stranger Things" star Finn Wolfhard making his directorial debut with the slasher comedy "Hell of a Summer" to "Dream Scenario" putting Nicolas Cage into everyone's dreams and plenty in between.
Let's take a closer look at some of the horror titles drumming up noise at TIFF 2023.

Slasher riffs and parodies date back nearly as long as slashers themselves, dissecting the enduring tropes and familiar formulas. In Hell of a Summer, first-time directors/writers Finn Wolfhard (“Stranger Things”) and Billy Bryk (Ghostbusters: Afterlife) frame their slasher riff as a buddy comedy from the perspective of teens, aimed solely at teens. The directors’ acting backgrounds translate to an ensemble of entertaining and lively performances, though their debut is less effective in form and slasher thrills.
After a requisite opening kill, Hell of a Summer spends a lengthy first act assembling Camp Pineway’s summer camp counselors, running through the archetypical roles destined to kill or be killed. Leading the charge is tenured counselor Jason (Fear Street’s Fred Hechinger), an “ancient” 24-year-old by his younger co-worker’s repeated jabs. Jason’s an unflappably plucky guy who tries to rally the team in the absence of the camp’s missing owners,...

Making a grand entrance into the world of directing, Billy Bryk and Finn Wolfhard present their feature debut, Hell of a Summer. With the vibes reminiscent of Friday the 13th and Sleep Away Camp, this film delivers nostalgia that captures the essence of the golden age of horror slasher cinema. Each character checks off the 1980s horror trope boxes, ensuring that every campy moment feels both authentic and delightfully over the top. Bryk and Wolfhard also star.
Starts with John and Cathy, owners of Pineway Summer Camp sitting around a campfire drinking beer and playing guitar. When one of them leaves to grab more alcohol, things end very badly for the two of them. Cut to Jason (Fred Hechinger) in the passenger seat while his mom drives him to work as a camp counselor at Pineway for $115 a week. Orphan: First Kill — the nutty, enjoyable prequel to 2009’s Orphan — begins and ends with bloodbaths. As is only fair. In the 2009 movie, an orphaned girl named Esther (played by Isabelle Fuhrman) is taken in by a family that doesn’t know (yet) that she is in fact a 30-year-old escaped criminal from Estonia, not the 9-year-old they thought she was. Esther’s said to be afflicted with hypopituitarism, a hormone disorder that stunts her growth. But that’s not why she kills people; it doesn’t explain being a stabby...

“There’s always been something wrong with Esther,” says the tagline on the poster for William Brent Bell‘s brand new psychological horror film Orphan: First Kill, which serves as a prequel to the 2009 film Orphan, which features one of the most insanely brilliant twists in film history.

Thirteen years after playing serial killer Leena Klammer (a.k.a. Esther) in the horror thriller Orphan, Isabelle Fuhrman has reprised the role in the prequel Orphan: First Kill (read our review Here) – which was released through the Paramount+ streaming service last Friday. Orphan: First Kill was also given a 498 screen theatrical release in the United States, and earned 1,675,000 over the weekend – a decent haul for that number of screens. So there was clearly an interest in seeing Fuhrman play Esther again. And during an interview with Variety, Fuhrman confirmed that she would be willing to come back for an Orphan 3 if it gets made.
Leena Klammer / Esther is an adult who was able to pass herself off as a 9 year old kid in the first Orphan. Looking 9 was easy for Fuhrman at the time because she was a child when she made that movie… but some trickery had to...

It’s Estonia, 2007, and the opening sequence of “Orphan: First Kill” assures we are in the realm of a horror movie because it opens with an overheard shot of a car snaking up a mountainous road blanketed in snow. That’s an obvious crib from “The Shining” that horror filmmakers can’t ever seem to resist, and it’s never not a charming genre in-joke in the key of the Wilhelm Scream, an evocative and easy reference filmmakers love to throw in to put us in a chilling mood.
From there, this prequel to the 2009 cult favorite “Orphan,” now directed by William Brent Bell taking over from the first film’s director Jaume Collet-Serra, mostly diverges from such high-minded fare, settling into trashy TV movie vibes for the rest of its twist-laden run time. Esther (Isabelle Fuhrman), the demon child of the 2009 horror thriller “Orphan,” was a 9-year-old psycho freak who dressed like a frumpy Victorian doll and spoke in a Russian accent, which upped the ante on her malevolence by making her seem not just a junior devil but a junior devil from the land of Putin. Movies about monster children go way back, and after “The Omen” and “The Brood” and “Ringu” and so many others, there wasn’t a lot of room left for a pulp horror film like “Orphan” to surprise us. But the movie, in its schlocky blunderbuss way, did have an original twist: Esther was not, in fact, 9 years old — she was a woman in her early 30s named Leena who had a rare hormonal disorder that stunted her physical development. The folly of “Orphan” is that it wasn’t much different from the film it would have...

Plot: A homicidal woman attempts to pass herself off as a family’s long-lost daughter. Disaster and bloodshed ensues.
Review: Thirteen years ago, the horror thriller Orphan introduced us to Esther, a 9-year-old girl who is adopted by a family… and then turns out to be thirty-something serial killer Leena Klammer, who is able to pass herself off as a child because she has a hormonal disorder called hypopituitarism. It was a terrific twist that allowed a film that looked like another take on The Bad Seed to become something else entirely. Esther/Leena was played by Isabelle Fuhrman, who was around 10 or 11 when she was on set, making it easy for her to pass as a 9-year-old herself. Now Fuhrman is an adult, but that hasn’t stopped her from reprising the role of Esther in the prequel Orphan: First Kill.
“How can Fuhrman possibly look like a 9-year-old again?...

The final act of 2009’s Orphan revealed a shocking twist; the adopted 9-year-old Esther (Isabelle Fuhrman) wasn’t a child but a murderous 33-year-old with hypopituitarism. Over a decade later, Esther returns to slay again. Instead of an older, wiser Esther, Orphan: First Kill rewinds the clock to follow the exploits of the childlike killer’s first adoptive family. The now adult Fuhrman reprising her role is the first overt clue that this prequel intends to fully embrace the over-the-top ‘90s thriller vibe its predecessor started, camp and all.
First Kill reacquaints us with Esther with a reminder of her homicidal tendencies. An extended opening sequence at an Estonian psychiatric facility demonstrates how deceptive and lethal Esther can be as she sets a plan to escape in motion. Esther then assumes the identity of a wealthy American family’s long-lost daughter. Impersonating the missing child proves a highly daunting...

You know the story (or maybe you don’t): A grown woman who looks like a child due to “proportional dwarfism” scams her way into being adopted by a loving family, only to terrorize them and attempt to seduce the husband. So goes the plot of “Orphan,” a middling-yet-gonzo horror flick from 2009.
Now, Paramount is taking that bizarre premise and extending it even further for the prequel “Orphan: First Kill,” directed by William Brent Bell and written by David Coggeshall.
“First Kill” takes the best part of its predecessor — its camp value — and dials things up to 11, delivering a movie that demands to be seen at rowdy theaters and sleepovers worldwide.

Jaume Collet-Serra's "Orphan" is one of my all-time favorite horror movies, and damn it, I am not ashamed to admit it! Collet-Serra took what was an admittedly silly premise and worked it into a stylish, amusing, creepy little slice of fun. The filmmaker, responsible for titles like "The Shallows," "Non-Stop," and the upcoming "Black Adam," is adept at a style I like to call art-trash — he blends artistic flourishes with pulpy, trashy premises to great effect. In Collet-Serra's hands, "Orphan" worked, and worked exceedingly well. The film focused on a little girl named Esther (Isabelle Fuhrman) adopted by a nice Connecticut couple (Vera Farmiga and Peter Sarsgaard). On the outside, Esther seemed sweet and almost unbelievably polite. But she was actually a murderous psychopath!
Killer kids are a dime a dozen in the horror genre, but "Orphan" threw in a whopper of a twist: Esther wasn't a child at all.

"If you're not Esther, then who are you?" Paramount Pictures has revealed the first trailer for a new horror movie titled Orphan: First Kill, a prequel to the 2009 horror hit Orphan. Unfortunately none of the original team is back, with a new writer and a new director handling this. Esther's terrifying saga continues in this thrilling prequel to the original and shocking horror. After orchestrating a brilliant escape from an Estonian psychiatric facility, Esther travels to America by impersonating the missing daughter of a wealthy family, but an unexpected twist arises. She must end up battling another over-protective mother. Isabelle Fuhrman returns to star as Esther, joined by Rossif Sutherland, Hiro Kanagawa, Matthew Finlan, and Julia Stiles. This looks a lot like a repeat of the original, with a few unique twists. I dig the blacklight aspects in here, not only visually engaging but adding another element of mystery & intrigue to this horror.

Over a decade later and “The Orphan” has been adopted for a prequel.
The 2009 horror film starred Isabelle Fuhrman as the titular sociopathic orphan Leena, who set out to torture a family and seduce her adoptive father after escaping an orphanage. While everyone thought Leena was nine years old, it turned out she was secretly a 33-year-old woman with a medical condition that made her look like a child. And yes, the movie is as amazing as it sounds.
Now, Leena finally gets her origin story thanks to the upcoming prequel film “Orphan: First Kill.” It’s directed by William Brent Bell (“The Boy”) from a script by David Coggeshall. The film hits theaters, digital, and streaming on Paramount+ on August 19.
