When we think of the greatest actors who opted to retire, there are really so few that ended on a high note. Daniel Day-Lewis in Phantom Thread is the first one that comes to mind, but who else would even be close? Unfortunately, it isn’t Gene Hackman, who left Hollywood after a 40+ year on the screen following 2004’s Welcome to Mooseport…which is just about the most embarrassing way to cap off such a legendary career. Then again, maybe it’s just the sort of movie that would make you want to retire.
By the time filming began on what would be his last movie, Gene Hackman was in his mid-70s and had seen enough in the business to know who was competent and, well, who would be directing Welcome to Mooseport. As co-star Maura Tierney remembered, Hackman and Donald Petrie did not get along at all when making the movie.

It’s been nearly three full years since American Rust last graced screens, but as the latest season titled American Rust: Broken Justice heads to Prime Video, the story is picking up only four months after the events of Season 1. For Buell resident Grace Poe (Maura Tierney), this means the beginning of a new chapter with her boyfriend, Del Harris (Jeff Daniels), and her son, Billy (Alex Neustaedter), who is still recovering from injuries sustained after being wrongfully convicted for Season 1’s central murder. After spending most of Season 1 fighting for her boy’s innocence and trying to free him from prison, her goals are shifting a bit this time around. “It’s a very different journey because the two men in her life have sort of… I don’t want to say abandoned her, but I think that’s how the character feels,” Tierney tells TV Insider of Grace...

Jeff Daniels as eternally glum police chief Del Harris returns for a widening murder conspiracy in the second-season trailer for American Rust: Broken Justice, which dropped Monday.
After the sudden, mysterious death of a former police officer in Pennsylvania’s rust belt in the rookie season is not quite solved by Harris, to say the least, the second-season trailer for American Rust: Broken Justice returns to the fictional town of Buell, where a compromised Del and Grace Poe (Maura Tierney) try to rebuild their lives.
That’s until the trailer reveals a series of unrelated murders that may add up to a much larger conspiracy closing in on a tight-knit town. “We never really do move on, do we?” Del questions at one point.
The fateful wrench from the first-season finale cover-up surfaces, as does Del fretting over how to protect the murder suspect and son of his sometimes girlfriend Grace.

Jeff Daniels and Maura Tierney drama American Rust is returning for its second season — on its third platform.
Amazon announced that the sophomore run — titled American Rust: Broken Justice — will premiere on its Prime Video platform rather than the previously announced ad-supported service Freevee. All 10 episodes of the season will debut in a binge drop on March 28.
The drama was originally developed for Showtime, which canceled the show after its first season aired. Freevee picked up American Rust for season 2 in June 2022, with the show now airing on the Amazon flagship service. With Amazon having formally added ads to its Prime Video platform, Freevee programming has been migrating to the larger Prime Video.

No one knew how many difficulties existed in the fictional town of Letterkenny when the show revolving around small-town hicks, hockey players and skids launched on Super Bowl Sunday 2016. As it turns out, there were enough “Letterkenny Problems” not only to change the lives of all those involved, but to transform the Canadian TV landscape.
When “Letterkenny” cracks open its final six-pack of episodes Dec. 25 on the Canadian streaming service Crave (and on Dec. 26 on Hulu), it ends an era that includes 74 episodes, seven specials, five live tours, branded clothing and booze, Canadian Screen Awards victories, and a spinoff, “Shoresy,” which wraps filming on its third season in Sudbury, Ont. this month.
The most impressive feat, however, may be in how a show with such specificity, from the vernacular to the sets, catapulted into mainstream pop culture and amassed loyal fanbases across Canada and the U.S.

Amid all the Christmas tentpole movies, a legitimately great film is getting a quiet release, with A24’s The Iron Claw now in theaters. A devastating account of the rise and fall of the Von Erich family, whose rumoured curse claimed the lives of no less than five brothers, it’s up there with the year’s best movies. It features a towering, career-best role for star Zac Efron, who plays Kevin Von Erich, a journeyman wrestler who lacks the flash and sizzle of his younger siblings but tries to hold them all together. The Bear’s Jeremy Allen White and Harris Dickinson star as two of his beloved, ill-fated younger brothers, Kerry and David, while Holt McCallany and Maura Tierney play their parents. McCallany’s Fritz Von Erich might have been the villain of a more simplistic telling of the Von Erich story. Still, the reality was that he was a complicated man who,...

Ladies and gentlemen, get ready to …watch another sports-themed movie! Sheesh and people whine about a “glut” of superhero flicks! So far this year we’ve got four or five “sports flicks”, the latest being the soccer comedy Next Goal Wins. Now that’s based on a true story, like most of the others. Oh, and two more true sports films finish out the year on Christmas Day. So, what sets this weekend’s release apart from the others? Well, it’s set in the world of professional wrestling in the “go-go” 1980s. Hmm, sounds like lots of campy, flashy fun. And you’d be a bit mistaken. Mind you, there are chuckles but this true tale is really a tragedy, close in spirit to a Greek one or even Shakespeare, but with spandex and mullets. In the center ring…a fable of a wrestling family dynasty whose patriarch gained...

Writer-director Sean Durkin turns to a childhood obsession with a Texas wrestling dynasty and almost Shakespearean tragedy in The Iron Claw, a gritty, atmospheric, sometimes suffocatingly grim story of the Von Erich brothers, who ruled regional rings in the early ’80s with a then-inventive rock ‘n roll style of wrestling that won them rabid fans but at a cost.
Some families are snake-bit. The Kennedys are one that through the decades met success and unspeakable tragedy equally. The Wallendas, the great family circus trapeze family, also mixed glory with a high-wire act that didn’t always end well for some members. I wasn’t familiar with the Von Erich brothers, a close-knit family of Texas-born and -bred wrestlers managed by a take-no-prisoners father, but Durkin clearly was. He has carried around their story, particularly their premature deaths, in his head for years, finally now finding a way into telling their...

A new Peacock docuseries about the ex-wife and family of suspected Long Island serial killer Rex Heuermann has unsurprisingly irked authorities and some families of victims potentially tied to the case.
The project was first confirmed earlier this month, and, as The New York Times notes, camera crews have been spotted at the home of Heuermann’s ex, Asa Ellerup, as well as following her to one of Heuermann’s recent court hearings. 50 Cent’s G-Unit Productions is helping to develop the project along with Texas Crew Productions and New York Post Entertainment.

When it comes to storytelling devices that allow for some truly wild creativity, the holodecks of "Star Trek" certainly rank among the best. They gave the writers the opportunity to take characters from a utopian sci-fi future and put them into a wide variety of stories and situations. Holodeck episodes really helped pad out the season back when seasons were 26 episodes or so, giving a little break from the starships and space exploration, but they also gave the actors a chance to really let loose and have fun. After all, who wouldn't want the chance to play their character playing Robin Hood or King Arthur? Sometimes the holodeck episodes could feel superfluous, but sometimes they ended up creating whole new storylines for the series. Just imagine the later seasons of "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" without Vic Fontaine (James Darren)!

Updated Throughout: Law enforcement officials and investigators used cell phone data, DNA evidence and computer search histories to zero in on the suspect in the Long Island serial killer case, explained Ray Tierney, Suffolk County, New York, District Attorney, in a press briefing this afternoon.
Among other bits of evidence presented to a grand jury since the formation of an investigative task force last year were hairs found on the bodies of at least three victims, hairs that provided DNA that matched DNA found on a pizza crust discarded by suspect Rex Heuermann.
Tierney also said that Heuermann had been linked to various “burner” cell phones – a different phone allegedly used to contact each victim and then discarded after the murder – and that cell phone tower data linked locations frequented by Heuermann – his Massapequa Park home, his Midtown Manhattan office – to calls made to the victims.

Tom Shadyac's 1997 comedy film "Liar Liar" had a light supernatural concept: Fletcher Reed, a typical Hollywood Workholic Dad constantly lies to his family and clients in order to succeed in life. As a lawyer, lying is handy. As a father, however, lying gets him in trouble with his five-year-old son, Max (Justin Cooper). As such, the child makes a birthday wish, longing that his dad cannot lie for just one day. The wish comes true.
What follows is a comedic showcase for star Jim Carrey to put his talents for physical comedy on display. The actor hilariously mugs and thrashes about in agony as Fletcher's newfound truthfulness gets him in various amounts of trouble. In one case, he cannot lie to exonerate a dishonest client. In another, he says openly lascivious things to a woman on the elevator. He gets slapped in the face and even arrested for his comments.

London, April 10 (Ians) Premier League assistant referee Constantine Hatzidakis will not be involved in another game until the end of an investigation over an incident where he appeared to deliberately elbow Liverpool defender Andrew Robertson.
The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (Pgmol), who governs referees in English football, said on Monday it was investigating the bizarre incident at halftime in Sunday’s 2-2 draw between Liverpool and Arsenal.
TV images show that Robertson approached Hatzidakis moments after referee Paul Tierney blew for halftime, only for the official to appear to use his elbow against the left back, who was subsequently shown a yellow card by Tierney, a Xinhua report said.
At the time the Pgmol said it was “aware of an incident involving assistant referee Constantine Hatzidakis and Liverpool defender Andrew Robertson at half-time during the Liverpool vs Arsenal fixture at Anfield,” adding they would “review the matter in full once the game has concluded.

Season 1 of the comedy, also a six-episode endeavor, debuted on Hulu in May 2022. Pitter-patter, let's get at 'er, because the Canadian comedy series "Letterkenny" is back for its 11th season. What started out as a YouTube web series called "Letterkenny Problems" has since grown into one of the funniest and most popular shows on TV, following the residents of Letterkenny, a fictional rural town in Ontario based on show creator Jared Keeso's hometown.
The residents of the small community fall under three major groups: the Hicks, the Skids, and the Hockey Players, but all three are ready for a brew, a brawl, or a beaut at any given opportunity. Whether it's chorin', sharing a Puppers with your best bud, or trading fisticuffs, the residents of "Letterkenny" do it faster, tougher, and with snappier wit than anyone else on the planet. With the return of the show just around the corner, here's everything you big shoots need to know to prepare, and more.

Lawrence Tierney: New book biography of legendary Hollywood tough guy generating holiday season buzz
The moment that writer-producer-author Burt Kearns knew he had to write a book about actor Lawrence Tierney came early in 2019 while he was researching a different book called “The Show Won’t Go On: The Most Shocking, Bizarre and Historic Deaths of Performers Onstage” that would publish that same year. He came upon a 1951 article in the Los Angeles Times headlined, “Lawrence Tierney Arrested 13th Time.” It was due to drunken driving, a familiar charge for perhaps the most pugnacious, self-destructive star in showbiz annals. “Drunk and disorderly” was another of his favorites.
“I decided to do a little more research,” Kearns recalls, “and it turned out it wasn’t actually his 13th arrest but more like his 22nd.”
Mind you, Tierney had only been acting professionally for less than a decade in ’51. Born in 1919, the Brooklyn native broke into the business with Rko Radio Pictures in 1943, earning a reputation for playing mobsters,...

There's something ironic about the fact that Quentin Tarantino — a director famous for his on-screen violence — got into a physical altercation on the set of his first feature-length film, "Reservoir Dogs." The "Kill Bill" director has had a successful career that was almost jeopardized during the production of his first film.
In the NFL, there are occasions called "welcome to the NFL" moments. While not an official phrase, my understanding is that these are usually the first time something big and negative happens to a player (typically a rookie). Maybe they get tackled hard by a veteran player, maybe they lose the game by dropping a pass, but this concept isn't exclusive to the sports industry. Think about it, we've all had our first major error or dilemma at a new job and Tarantino is no different. His "welcome to directing" moment was the altercation between him and an actor...

Unlike live-action productions, animation offers the opportunity to make changes and revise scenes without disrupting the entire production. You can draw over a frame or re-dub it without having to gather the entire cast and crew for a reshoot. Sometimes this can translate to a lot of studio notes hoping for changes that adhere to strange or strict regulations, as we've been exploring elsewhere on /Film.
One major exception to this is the gargantuan pop culture icon "The Simpsons." There is a clause in the contract for the show that stated Fox executives could not go to table reads or force notes on the writers. This has allowed the animated sitcom to survive for three decades and over 700 episodes while making fun of everything, including religion, politics, sports and the Fox network itself multiple times.

Well, this is a shocker.
When TV shows are canceled, they usually fade away, with little hope of a revival.
The Amazon-owned streaming service Freevee has picked up American Rust, five months after its cancellation at Showtime.
Series stars Jeff Daniels and Maura Tierney are set to return for the second season.
Produced by Boat Rocker and executive produced by Daniels, Dan Futterman, and Adam Rapp, the second season of the compelling crime drama set in a Pennsylvania Rust Belt town will stream exclusively on Freevee.
The move is especially surprising because the series is moving from premium cable to a free, ad-supported streaming service.
Based on Philipp Meyer’s critically acclaimed novel of the same name, the first season of American Rust explored the tattered American Dream in a Rust Belt town in southwest Pennsylvania through the eyes of police chief Del Harris (Daniels).

Del Harris is getting a second chance. The American Rust TV show was cancelled by Showtime in January but the show has now been revived by the Amazon Freevee streaming service.
A family drama series, the American Rust TV show is based on the novel by Philipp Meyer and stars Jeff Daniels, Maura Tierney, Bill Camp, David Alvarez, Alex Neustaedter, Julia Mayorga, Mark Pellegrino, and Rob Yang. A story of survival and transcendence, it's told through the eyes of Del Harris (Daniels). He's the complicated (and compromised) chief of police of a Pennsylvania Rust Belt town that's full of good people making bad choices. When news of the murder of an ex-cop rips through the town, Harris must decide what lengths he is willing to take to protect Billy Poe (Neustaedter), the son of Grace (Tierney), the...

Amazon Freevee has come to the rescue for American Rust. Amazon’s free ad-supported VOD streaming service (formerly IMDb TV) has ordered a second season of the Rust Belt drama series that was canceled by Showtime in January. Jeff Daniels and Maura Tierney are returning to lead the cast.
American Rust initially was ordered straight-to-series at USA Network in November 2017, but a few months later, the network opted not to move forward with it. At the time, sources said the order was contingent on the producers finding a big star for the lead, which didn’t happen. It then moved to Showtime, with Daniels attached to star and executive produce, where it aired for one season. The network announced in January that it would not be renewed, and now Freevee has picked up the drama following its cancellation by Showtime. The show will stream exclusively on Freevee.

Amazon Freevee is bringing back “American Rust” for Season 2 following the show’s cancellation at Showtime.
“American Rust,” based on the Philipp Meyer novel of the same name, stars Jeff Daniels and Maura Tierney. The show aired one season on Showtime in late 2021 before it was canceled in January 2022.
“’American Rust’ is exactly the type of gritty and engaging storytelling Amazon Freevee audiences love, and we could not be more excited to bring this prestige series to our customers, free of charge,” said Lauren Anderson and Ryan Pirozzi, co-heads of content and programming at Amazon Freevee. “We can’t wait to dive in with Boat Rocker and Dan Futterman to continue the story that intrigued audiences during the first season, and to see the evolution of characters so expertly portrayed by Jeff and Maura in this next chapter.”

Amazon Freevee has picked up the second season of “American Rust,” the Jeff Daniels and Maura Tierney-starring crime series that was previously canceled at Showtime earlier this year.
Based on Philipp Meyer’s acclaimed 2009 novel of the same name, the drama explores the fallout of the “tattered American Dream” in a rustic Pennsylvania town through the lens of the police chief Del Harris. When the son of the woman he loves, Grace Poe (Tierney), is accused of murder, he’s forced to decide how far he’s willing to go in order to protect him.
“I’m grateful to Amazon Freevee for giving us the chance to make Season Two of ‘American Rust,’” Daniels said in a statement. “Set inside a struggling American small town, our authentic, realistically told story is built for streaming. The movies they don’t make anymore are being made as series at places like Amazon Freevee.

A show-off piece of filmmaking that will put debut writer-director Quentin Tarantino on the map, “Reservoir Dogs” is an intense, bloody, in-your-face crime drama about a botched robbery and its aftermath, colorfully written in vulgar gangster vernacular and well played by a terrific cast, this piece of strong pulp will attract attention but looks like a modest b.o. performer.
Clearly influenced by Scorsese’s “Mean Streets” and “Goodfellas” and Kubrick’s “The Killing,” Tarantino would love to be grouped in such company and employs many bravura effects in making his bid. Undeniably impressive pic grabs the viewer by the lapels and shakes hard, but it also is about nothing other than a bunch of macho guys and how big their guns are.
Strikingly shot and funny opening scene has eight criminals at breakfast arguing about the true meaning of Madonna’s “Like a Virgin.” This vulgar, unlikely discussion, coupled...
