Alfonso Quijada’s feature follows a young woman gifted with an extraordinary sense of smell. It looks great, but fails to satisfy
This drama from El Salvador has several commendable features, starting with a tender, sympathetic central performance from Laura Osma as Josefina, a sweet young woman who discovers she has an exceptional sense of smell. However, something doesn’t quite smell right about the way the film clumsily layers uplift and violence, served up with excessively stylised visuals and sound. It’s as if writer-director Alfonso Quijada, better known hitherto as an actor and producer, doesn’t know if he wants to make a telenovela-style melodrama or something more elevated and arty – in the tradition of Claudia Llosa’s The Milk of Sorrow or Lila Avilés’s films The Chambermaid and Tótem – with long takes and oblique storytelling strategies. In the end, it fails to satisfy either ambition.

Throughout the first episode of “Coyote,” I kept waiting for a moment that might surprise me. Surely, I thought, this swashbuckling tale of a recently retired Border Patrol agent (Michael Chiklis) has more to offer than bursts of violence and basic platitudes about right and wrong. Surely, I hoped, there might be different layers to this series than meets the eye. And yet by the end of four episodes, no such moment came. Created by Michael Carnes, Josh Gilbert and showrunner David Graziano, “Coyote” sets itself up as an incisive character drama about a man who stumbles into a life and death situation that forces his black and white worldview to become gray. Instead, it comes off as a self-serious Western fantasy that’s more concerned with shocking its audience than making any sense.

One of the first scenes in “Coyote,” the new CBS All Access series about an American border patrol officer who’s forced to work for a Mexican cartel, shows Michael Chiklis taking a shit. Stood up for a meeting, the gruff, tough-talking, body-armored agent flees to the nearest public restroom, and — having threatened to buy a moving box and “take a shit in that instead” if the U-Haul desk agent doesn’t make an exception to his customers only restroom policy — Bailey “Ben” Clemens stares at his outstretched foot in contemplative respite. A brown water spot gurgles on the floor. The busted stall door hangs from its hinges. Ben exhales in disgust.
But Ben’s frustration isn’t with the state of the bathroom he’s chosen. It’s with what that bubbling water indicates: a secret tunnel, leading under the building and out past the border wall next door.
