“It’s not as simple anymore as sending the president out to stand behind the podium, letting the news media cover it and calling it a day,” former White House Communications Director Kate Bedingfield says on today’s Deadline ElectionLine podcast about the reality of the 21st century press paradigm that even the most powerful person in the world battles. “That worked in 1992, that doesn’t work in 2024,” she adds.

Updated, 5:08 Am Pt, Wednesday: Democrats won significant victories in off-year elections on Tuesday, with Andy Beshear reelected governor of Kentucky, an abortion rights ballot measure easily approved in Ohio and the party taking full control of Virginia’s General Assembly.
As cable news networks deployed graphics and teams of pundits to offer their takes, there was a bit of vexation when it comes to making sense of it all when it comes to 2024.
Earlier in the evening, CNN released the results of a poll showing President Joe Biden trailing former President Donald Trump in a rematch, giving fuel to the storyline that Democrats are facing a five-alarm fire when it comes to their prospects next year.
On MSNBC, as it was clear that Beshear was on his way to winning reelection over Republican Daniel Cameron in the deep-red state, Chris Hayes said, “If everything was going as poorly as people say things are going,...

Bedingfield, who has led Biden’s communications apparatus for four years, will depart at the end of the month, and will be succeeded by Ben Labolt, a veteran of the Obama administration.

Jen Psaki held her 224th and final briefing as White House press secretary on Friday and fought back tears as she thanked President Joe Biden, members of the administration and the press staff.
Karine Jean-Pierre, who has served as principal deputy press secretary, will succeed Psaki, who has been in the role for the past 15 months.
In remarks on her tenure, Psaki recounted meeting with Biden and Jill Biden shortly after the election and being “very nervous” when she went to see them.
“Really what we talked about for the majority of our conversation was the importance of returning integrity, respect and civility to the White House,” Psaki said. “The small sliver of my job here and in engaging with all of you, that does not mean that we haven’t let our Irish side show — mine and the president’s as well from time to time. I recognize that.

White House Communications Director Kate Bedingfield said on Friday that she had tested positive for Covid.
Bedingfield is the latest administration official to test positive, just as many officials are planning to attend this weekend’s White House Corrrespondents’ Association dinner. Bedingfield was planning to attend the dinner as a guest of ABC News.
“This morning, I tested positive for Covid-19. I last saw the President Wednesday in a socially-distanced meeting while wearing an N-95 mask, and he is not considered a close contact as defined by the CDC,” Bedingfield wrote on Twitter.
Bedingfield served on Biden’s presidential campaign and in his office when he was vice president. She also was at one time the spokesperson for the MPAA. Bedingfield subbed in for White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki in the daily briefing after Psaki tested positive for Covid last month.

Amy Schumer, one of the three co-hosts at the 2022 Oscars (you may remember her dangling from the ceiling in a Spider-Man suit), hit Instagram late Tuesday night with what appeared, at first, to be a simple plug of her latest show, “Life & Beth” on Hulu, and a reminder that she’s taking her live act on the road this autumn. What came next, however, was Schumer’s attempt to unpack her feelings following Sunday night’s Oscars shocker: Will Smith slapping Chris Rock across the face.
“But for real,” she wrote in her caption. “Still triggered and traumatized.”
Schumer, who was not involved in any direct way with the incident, added, “I’m still in shock and stunned and sad. I’m proud of myself and my co-hosts. But yeah. Waiting for this sickening feeling to go away from what we all witnessed.”

Washington — Six weeks into Joe Biden’s presidency, there are new signs filibuster reform might happen.
After a marathon overnight voting session last week, the Senate voted along party lines to pass the $1.9 trillion Covid-19 relief bill supported by Biden. The American Recovery Plan Act of 2021 now heads to the House for a final vote. From there, it will likely land on Biden’s desk in the next week. When he signs it, the first major legislative accomplishment of the Biden presidency will be done.
So will the easy part of Biden’s policy agenda.

White House Deputy Press Secretary T.J. Ducklo was suspended for one week without pay after a report that he threatened a reporter for Politico.
Ducklo also will no longer be assigned to work with Politico’s reporting team.
On Friday, Vanity Fair reported that Ducklo had a verbal confrontation with Politico‘s Tara Palmeri, who was working on a story on his relationship with a reporter for Axios, Alexi McCammond. A male Politico reporter had contacted Ducklo, while Palmeri had reached out to McCammond. But Ducklo called Palmeri to object to the piece.
“I will destroy you” if the story was published, Ducklo told her, according to Vanity Fair. He also reportedly “made derogatory and misogynistic comments.”

Donald Trump was a showman whose election in 2016 was in part due to his fame from The Apprentice, but President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris will come into office with much closer ties to the entertainment industry.
The new administration will likely usher in a much more receptive vibe from Hollywood figures, reminiscent of Barack Obama’s presidency, when the White House routinely hosted movie screenings, celebrity-led workshops and In Performance at the White House concerts.
But beyond the prospect of a revived Hollywood-d.C. social scene, Biden has a history of working on entertainment-centric issues like piracy and trade that are atop the agenda of Hollywood studios.
Perhaps the biggest asset for the industry is that a number of Biden’s advisers have ties to the Motion Picture Association. Kate Bedingfield, his deputy campaign manager, and T.J. Ducklo, his national press secretary, formerly worked for the trade...

Updated, 12:23 Pm: The next presidential debates are in jeopardy after Donald Trump’s campaign rejected plans for a virtual event on Oct. 15 and Joe Biden’s campaign scheduled a solo ABC News town hall that evening.
The Commission on Presidential Debates announced early Thursday that a planned town hall debate next week will feature both candidates by remote, out of concerns of the coronavirus and of the president’s continued recovery. Trump quickly rejected that plan, and Biden proposed postponing the event a week later to Oct. 22, when the third presidential debate had been scheduled.
The ABC News town hall will be with chief anchor George Stephanopoulos. The event will be held in Philadelphia. The network hosted a town hall event with Trump last month.

Updated, with comments from Debate Commission co-chair: Frank Fahrenkopf, co-chair of the Commission on Presidential Debates, told Deadline that they have yet to directly hear from the Trump campaign that they will skip next week’s debate after it switched to a virtual format.

After the announcement was made that the Oct. 15 event would switch to the virtual format, Trump’s supporters quickly argued that Biden would use notes, in line with their general argument that the Democratic nominee is too feeble to be president.

Update: Joe Biden spoke to campaign staff and the media of sharing with Bernie Sanders the “common goal” of defeating Donald Trump, as pundits began to focus on how Biden can unify the party.
Sanders has not conceded the race, and in an unusual move for a primary night, he passed on making any statement to the media.
“I want to thank Bernie Sanders and his supporters for their tireless energy and their passion,” Biden said in his speech to supporters in Philadelphia. “We share a common goal, and together we can defeat Donald Trump.”
Biden also said of his rivals, “We need you. We want you. And there’s a place in our campaign for each of you.”
As news networks awaited further results, commentary turned to Biden’s challenge in winning over Sanders’ supporters, who turned his campaign rallies into passionate displays against the establishment and politics as usual.

The presidential campaigns of Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden are canceling rallies planned for Tuesday night in Cleveland amid concerns over the spread of the coronavirus.
“Out of concern for public health and safety, we are canceling tonight’s rally in Cleveland,” said Mike Casca, the Sanders campaign’s communications director. “We are heeding the public warnings from Ohio state officials, who have communicated concern about holding large, indoor events during the coronavirus outbreak. Sen. Sanders would like to express his regret to the thousands of Ohioans who had planned to attend the event tonight.”
About a half hour later, Biden’s communications director, Kate Bedingfield, said in a statement that their event in Cleveland also will be canceled.
“In accordance with guidance from public officials and out of an abundance of caution, our rally in Cleveland, Ohio tonight is cancelled,” she said in a statement. “We will continue to...

Bernie Sanders held his final New Hampshire campaign rally on Monday night with a mini-concert from the Strokes, with a playlist that included a cover of “Burning Down the House.” Twenty miles away, Pete Buttigieg closed out his bid at a high school gymnasium where actor Kevin Costner spoke said he was a “not only a man who understands how the world is looking at us but how history will.”
As they reached across pop culture generations in making closing statements in the Granite State, Sanders and Buttigieg widely are viewed as the most likely to come out on top when returns start coming in shortly after 7 p.m. Et tonight. And media attention also will focus on who ranks No. 3 and No. 4, as Joe Biden, Elizabeth Warren and Amy Klobuchar seek a placement that keeps their campaigns going and the donations flowing.

Joe Biden has signaled to aides that if elected president in 2020 he would only serve one term in office, Politico reported on Wednesday.
Speculation that Biden would be better served to occupy the White House for a single term has surrounded the former vice president since he was considering running in 2016. The idea has lingered throughout Biden’s current run, especially considering the extent to which he’s show his age on the campaign trail. If elected, Biden would take office as a 78-year-old, surpassing President Trump, who was 70 when...

The New York Times on Wednesday rejected complaints from Joe Biden’s presidential campaign that the paper was spreading a “baseless conspiracy theory” about the former vice president.
“Our coverage of the Biden campaign and Hunter Biden has been fair and accurate,” said in a statement. “The Biden campaign obviously disagrees and instead of asking to meet with the paper’s leadership to discuss these concerns, they wrote a critical letter and shared it publicly.”
The statement continued, “We will continue to cover Joe Biden with the same tough and fair standards we apply to every candidate in the race and we’re happy to sit down with Biden advisers anytime to discuss news coverage.”

Rudy Giuliani appeared on Fox Business Network on Monday, a day after Joe Biden’s presidential campaign sent out a letter to the networks asking them not to book President Donald Trump’s personal lawyer for “pushing out outlandish falsehoods and disinformation.”
Giuliani addressed the Biden campaign letter right off the bat, telling host Maria Bartiromo that “although I’ve been banned, I’m glad to see you have the courage to have me on. I’m very dangerous.”
In the letter, Biden campaign officials Kate Bedingfield and Anita Dunn wrote that if networks do put Giuliani on the air, “you need to give an equivalent amount of time to a surrogate for the Biden campaign.”
After the interview ended, Bartiromo told viewers, “I also want to say we have called Vice President Joe Biden. I welcome the opportunity to have the former Vice President on any of these programs.

Joe Biden’s presidential campaign on Sunday urged major U.S. TV-news outlets to cease booking Rudy Giuliani, President Trump’s personal attorney, as a guest, citing his penchant for spreading “false, debunked conspiracy theories” on behalf of the White House.
The letter, signed by top Biden aides Anita Dunn and Kate Bedingfield, was sent to top executives at several major news outlets, as well as a handful of prominent anchors, according to a person familiar with the matter. The Daily Beast previously reported the existence of the letter.
“We write to demand that in service to the facts, you no longer book Rudy Giuliani, a surrogate for Donald Trump who has demonstrated that he will knowingly and willingly lie in order to advance his own narrative,” the aides wrote.

Joe Biden’s presidential campaign is asking the networks to stop booking Rudy Giuliani, writing that President Donald Trump’s personal lawyer “has made very clear that his only obligation is to protect Donald Trump, and that he will willingly lie to do so.”
In a letter to the networks, campaign officials Anita Dunn and Kate Bedingfield wrote the networks that “while you have been aggressive in pushing back on him in real time, it is well known that the dedicated liar always has the advantage, pushing out outlandish falsehoods and disinformation in the knowledge that it is hard for the corrections to catch up. Giving Rudy Giuliani valuable time on your air to push these lies in the first place is a disservice to your audience and a disservice to journalism.”

Joe Biden, continuing his fundraising swing through Los Angeles, accused President Donald Trump of trying to “hijack an election” by seeking Ukraine’s help.
Biden’s comments at a San Marino, CA fundraiser this afternoon came just hours after the release of a whistleblower complaint. An unnamed intelligence official accused Trump of trying to pressure the Ukrainian president into investigating Biden and his son, Hunter, for conflicts of interest. Biden was Vice President when Hunter Biden was the director of a Ukrainian gas company that was once under investigation.
“This isn’t about me,” Biden said, according to a pool reporter. “It’s never been about me. It’s a tactic that’s used by this president to try to hijack and election so we do not focus on the issues that matter in our lives.”
Biden, speaking to about 130 guests, read from the complaint and said that there was...
