Is Messi’s reign as cinema’s current top dog over?
The Palm Dog — Cannes’ annual celebration of on-screen canine performances which was last year won by the blue-eyed border collie from “Anatomy of a Fall,” the first step in a dramatic bound toward furry fame — has crowned a new champion.
The 2024 Palm Dog, presented at a special event on May 24, has been given to Kodi, the senior stray at the heart of acclaimed Swiss-French comedy “Dog on Trial.” The Un Certain Regard title from director and star Laetitia Dosch sees Kodi — believed to be a blonde Griffon cross — plays Cosmos, an aggressive pet who’s taken on as a client by a defense lawyer in story exploring the status of dogs in society. According to Palm Dog founder Toby Rose, Kodi is nearing his 10th birthday and will soon retire from acting, but bow-wows out having delivered a “fine four-legged swan song.

After Justine Triet’s Anatomy of a Fall powered its way to five Oscar nominations, it was a common feeling that the film’s Mvp was short-changed on the big night. Though the film went home with Best Original Screenplay, Messi — the seven-year-old border collie who plays Snoop, the family dog who becomes an integral part of the courtroom drama — was not so lucky, returning empty-pawed to his native Paris. Not that he was an ungracious loser; a clip of the hound applauding Robert Downey Jr.’s win for Oppenheimer went viral, not least because it brought a huge spontaneous smile to the face of Barbie’s Ryan Gosling.
Being modest, Messi downplayed the fact that earlier in the day he had stolen the show at the Fido Awards in London, an awards ceremony that recognizes the work put in by canine thespians from around the world. From the same...

In Entertainment Weekly's 1993 cover story on Moose, the beloved Jack Russell Terrier that played Eddie on "Frasier," the dog was described as "the hottest pooch to be unleashed on the airwaves in years." The story itself was proof of Moose's popularity — what other TV pet was getting an EW cover story? On the show, Eddie belonged to Frasier's dad, Martin (John Mahoney), and was just as beloved by the characters in the series as he was by the audience. The only character that wasn't too fond of Eddie was Dr. Frasier Crane himself.
Moose appeared in 192 episodes of "Fraiser," with his son, Enzo, also standing in as Eddie in the later seasons. As such, he was arguably just as integral a part of the series as any other member of the ensemble cast, and one of the best characters on "Frasier." As the "Frasier" revival continues, so do the allusions to the titular doctor's past. We've had the references to "Cheers," we've had the touching tribute to Martin actor John Mahoney. We're soon to see some beloved characters from the original "Frasier" return. But what we've really been waiting for is some canine energy.
On the original "Frasier," that energy was provided by Moose, Hollywood trainer Mathilde DeCagney's terrier who played Martin's beloved Jack Russell, Eddie. Moose's son, Enzo, also stood in for his father. Perhaps more than any main character in "Frasier," Eddie cut through Frasier's snootiness simply by virtue of being a dog whose needs the lovably pretentious doctor was simply unwilling to accommodate. At least, that's how things start out. By the end of the 11th and final season of "Frasier," the titular psychiatrist softened on Eddie, and the two become pals in one of the many...

Werewolf by Night was a fun departure from typical Marvel fare, with a black-and-white presentation that felt inspired by Universal Monsters and Hammer Horror, but will we ever see these characters again? Nothing has been announced regarding a sequel or follow-up to Werewolf by Night, but director Michael Giacchino told Collider that he has plenty of ideas for more if and when Marvel comes calling.
“There’s always talk,” Michael Giacchino said. “But, you know, until somebody decides to spend a penny, nothing happens yet. So, hopefully. My wish is that, yes, there will be more with these characters. I would love to, and I have ideas of what I would love to do with them, and it’s all crazy and nuts, but I think that’s the only way to go about it. So, hopefully, one day. Hopefully, one day.“

"More terrifying, more gruesome, all in color." Marvel Studios has unveiled a brand new 2023 trailer for their spin-off Halloween "Special Presentation" event called Werewolf by Night. It initially debuted last year during October as a one-off, one-hour-long B&w horror film from Marvel, directed by famed composer Michael Giacchino. It's now being re-released fully in color in 2023 (as "Werewolf by Night in Color"). The special stars the wonderfully talented actor Gael García Bernal as Jack Russell, a lycanthrope superhero who fights crime using the abilities given to him by a curse brought on by his bloodline. The great cast also includes Laura Donnelly, Harriet Sansom Harris, Eugenie Bondurant, & Kirk R. Thatcher. The film introduces a whole bunch of new monsters from the Marvel universe, most notably the big lovable tree monster "Man-Thing" aka "Ted". I thought it played just fine in B&w last year, but I guess I'll watch it again in color this year.

Last year, Marvel and Disney+ released the very cool creature feature Halloween special Werewolf by Night (you can read our 8/10 review Here), which was presented in black & white as a throwback to the Universal Monsters classics. They don’t have a new Halloween special for us this year, but they will be celebrating the holiday by releasing a colorized presentation of Werewolf by Night – appropriately called Werewolf by Night: In Color. This version of the special is set to begin streaming on Disney+ on October 20th, and one week out from that premiere date a trailer has arrived online to give a preview of what Werewolf by Night looks like in color. According to the promo, color makes it all more terrifying and more gruesome.
Composer Michael Giacchino directed Werewolf by Night, working from a script by Heather Quinn and Peter Cameron. The special has the following synopsis: On a dark and somber night,...

One of Marvel‘s best offerings in years is returning to Disney+ this October, just in time for Halloween! The howlingly good Werewolf By Night barks at the moon again on October 20 with a colorized version of Jack Russell’s pulpy monster-filled adventure.
In addition to introducing MCU fans to Jack Russell (Gael García Bernal), Werewolf By Night features Elsa Bloodstone (Laura Donnelly), a deadly monster hunter ripped from the pages of Marvel Comics. In September of 2022, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said Jack Russell “will ultimately become quite important to the future of the MCU.” Still, with Marvel’s steaming slate under scrutiny after the studio said it’s pulling back on the reigns of streaming content, the werewolf’s future remains a mystery.
Many fans would jump at the chance for more full-moon shenanigans with Jack Russell, and Donnelly is game to return as Elsa Bloodstone, too. Speaking...

When childhood friends Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna starred in the steamy Mexican drama “Y tu mamá también” in 2002, they spent a year traveling the globe, attracting Hollywood attention and dreaming of the future. “We were always fantasizing about what’s next,” said Luna, now 43, in a Zoom interview from his home in Madrid. “We hoped one day we could own a soccer team. That hasn’t happened. But everything else, we managed to achieve.”
Those plans included starting their own production company and a film festival (the itinerant documentary festival Ambulante). They didn’t, however, have anything to do with “Star Wars” or superhero movies.
Yet with Luna starring in the Disney+ “Star Wars” spin-off “Andor” in the same year that García Bernal makes his MCU debut in the Disney+ medium-length feature “Werewolf by Night,” they have arrived at a turning point on their winding journey through popular...

“Halloween Ends” had a healthy — albeit slightly underwhelming — box office performance in its debut weekend, but the 13th film in the popular horror franchise looks to have made up for it with a strong debut on Peacock, according to Whip Media’s latest movie ranker — which reflects data from TV time, a TV and movie app that tracks viewer interest from 22 million global registered users.
That’s because “Halloween Ends” was the most streamed movie in the U.S. last weekend, per Whip Media’s viewer data. The latest “Halloween” flick, starring Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie Strode, Michael Myers’ longtime nemesis, topped the streaming chart at the same time it topped the domestic box office, bringing in 41.2 million.
While that’s well ahead of the film’s 30 million budget, its ticket sales came in slightly below expectations. Independent trackers had expected “Halloween Ends” to at least match the 49.4 million...

Great White singer Jack Russell is seeking immunity from prosecution following the tragic fire at a Rhode Island nightclub last week. The frontman has been approached by a Grand Jury, which is investigating the incident at The Station nightspot, which resulted in the death of 96 people. But he has only agreed to testify if he is assured no prosecution will be brought against him. Since the horrifying incident, caused by pyrotechnics, on February 20, which claimed the life of guitarist Ty Longley, both the band and the club have blamed each other. Great White tour manager Daniel Biechele's attorney Thomas Briody says he had met with Station representatives before the gig and insists they told him the use of pyrotechnics was encouraged. A claim the club denies. Briody says, "Any suggestion that Great White did not have permission to display pyrotechnics is simply false."...
