Darren Criss has played queer roles over the years and is now explaining why he says he’s “culturally gay.”
One of the actor’s most remembered roles is Blaine Anderson from Glee, and during an appearance at the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo, he was asked about the impact of his character and the on-screen relationship with Chris Colfer’s Kurt.
“F***ing awesome,” Criss said about portraying the gay character. “It was a narrative that I cared deeply about.”
Criss identifies as a straight, cisgender male and attributes his understanding of the LGBTQ+ community to his upbringing in San Francisco, California.
“I have been so culturally queer my whole life,” he said. “Not because I’m trying, you know, actually, I was gonna say, not because I’m trying to be cool, but I’m gonna erase that, because I am trying to be cool. The things in my...

The premise of the limited series “Class of ‘09” is a familiar form of dystopia: in the near future, law enforcement has come to rely on technology that skirts the line between police work and a police state. “Class of ‘09” shares a blueprint with classics like “Minority Report,” then adds a timely twist. The FX show’s Orwellian innovation is an algorithm powered by artificial intelligence, the kind of tool now at the center of all kinds of public anxiety, including the ongoing writers strike.
“Class of ‘09” is created and written by Tom Rob Smith, the British scribe best known to Americans as the force behind “The Assassination of Gianni Versace,” the second installment of Ryan Murphy anthology “American Crime Story.” That season, an underrated masterpiece, scrambled the typical chronology of true crime, beginning with the titular murder and winding backwards through Andrew Cunanan’s serial killing spree.

British writer Tom Rob Smith is no stranger to juggling multiple timelines. As the primary author of The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, he deftly moved through various decades as he dramatized the internalized homophobia that fueled Andrew Cunanan's 1997 killing spree. For his efforts, he took home the Emmy for Outstanding Limited Series, as well as a Golden Globe and Writers Guild of America Award.
The thoughtfulness of Versace makes the inelegance of his latest FX collaboration, Class of '09, all the more surprising. Alternating among three years — 2009, 2023, and 2034 — the thriller follows a class of FBI agents as they confront a changing criminal justice system and the emergence of artificial intelligence as a crime-prevention tool. According to FX, these interweaving eras demonstrate how our choices "ultimately define our lives and legacy," but mostly, they complicate the show.

Among the Emmy categories that “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story” is looking to get nominated in, Best Movie/Limited Actor for its star Daniel Radcliffe is right at the top along with Best TV Movie. The Roku Channel’s hit telefilm may seem like an unconventional nominee, but there are several promising factors that are working in his favor.
The fact that the movie is a flat-out comedy could be viewed as something of an obstacle for it to overcome. But, performances from comedic-dramas have scored noms here, including Jeff Bridges for “A Dog Year” (2010) and Hugh Grant for “A Very English Scandal” (2019). We have also seen three comedy performances contend in this category: two for Ricky Gervais for “Extras: The Extra Special Series Finale” (2008) and “Derek: The Special” (2015) and one for Jesse Plemons for “Black Mirror: USS Callister” (2018).

Few true stories are as harrowing, grisly, or baffling as the ones presented on Wondery's "Dr. Death" podcast. The hit series investigates the stories of fraudulent, overconfident, often manipulative medical professionals who seem to purposely and pathologically put their patients' lives at risk. The first season, about spine-maiming Dr. Christopher Duntsch, who's now serving life in prison, captured listeners' attention when it debuted in 2018 and went on to inspire the Peacock series of the same name.
But the other seasons of "Dr. Death" are just as disturbing, and now, the Critics Choice-nominated drama series is set to return as an anthology. The second season will tell another story fans of the Wondery podcast will be familiar with: that of Dr. Paolo Macchiarini. Here's everything we know so far about the second installment of the series about horrendous medical malpractice.

What is it that draws Ryan Murphy to monsters? Or, if not monsters, then at least incredibly flawed people. Brooke McQueen, Andrew Cunanan, Rachel Berry, Nurse Ratched, Payton Hobart, Oj Simpson, Henry Willson, and now Jeffrey Dahmer. Part of this is a rhetorical question, to be sure: us queers love to find solace in the outcasts, alienated, and unwanted. But fewer of us construct, with 100 million development deals, the scaffolding around some of the most diabolical to make them sympathetic.

Lance Bass has shared who he would replace Justin Timberlake with if Nsync had a reunion.
Nsync, originally made up of Lance Bass, Joey Fatone, Jc Chasez, Chris Kirkpatrick and Justin Timberlake, formed in 1995.
The band announced a hiatus to pursue solo material back in 2002. However, after Timberlake’s career took off with his debut Justified, the band never reunited and officially called it quits in 2005.
The “Bye Bye Bye” five-piece haven’t reunited musically since their VMAs performance in 2013 – although everyone but Timberlake performed alongside Ariana Grande at Coachella in 2019.
In a recent episode of the Boy Meets World podcast, Bass responded to questions over who would replace Timberlake if the band were to tour again.
The singer said that he was sure it would be American actor, singer and songwriter Darren Criss, who is best known for playing Andrew Cunanan in American high-school drama Glee.

Donatella Versace is still reeling over the death of her brother, Gianni Versace. On July 15, Donatella marked the 25th anniversary of his death, sharing a carousel of throwback photos of Gianni, including a black and white pic of herself with him, on social media. On July 15, 1997, Gianni was gunned down outside his infamous Miami Beach mansion by serial killer Andrew Cunanan after a morning walk to buy an Italian newspaper from a local cafe. He was 50 years old. Just days before his murder, the Versace founder was in Paris, debuting a new...

For the second season of FX’s American Crime Story franchise, Tom Rob Smith used a reverse-chronological structure to trace Andrew Cunanan’s Talented Mr. Ripley-style journey from con artist with identity issues to road-tripping murderer. It was a framing device that didn’t always feel organic, but it yielded unexpected emotional rewards as the series progressed, aided tremendously by Darren Criss’ lacerating performance.

The case of Charles Sobhraj seems perfect for the age of the true-crime dramatization. Sobhraj, currently incarcerated in Nepal, was a serial murderer in the 1970s, preying especially upon Western travelers on the so-called Hippie Trail in Asia. His notoriety intersects with the anxieties of his era, and his deeds demonstrate an almost boundless capacity for cruelty and compartmentalization: Both of these facts would seem to serve a genre that seeks within stories from the past ways of understanding our times and ourselves.

Exclusive: Evan Peters, one of Ryan Murphy’s go-to actors, is set as the title character in Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, a Netflix limited series co-created by longtime collaborators Murphy and Ian Brennan, Deadline has learned. Another actor from the Ryan Murphy TV universe, Niecy Nash, is set to star in the seres, which also has cast Penelope Ann Miller, Shaun J. Brown and Colin Ford, sources said. They join previously announced Richard Jenkins. Netflix declined comment.

The series dramatizes at least 10 instances where Dahmer was almost apprehended but ultimately let go. The series also is expected to touch on white privilege, as Dahmer,...

“The Undoing” will likely dominate the Golden Globes when the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announces its nominations on February 3, 2021. Take that to the bank. What may be surprising is that the one contender from the show who is most likely to win among all that star wattage, and in the highly competitive limited series races, is leading man Grant. In Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s Ratched, Jon Jon Briones plays Dr. Hanover, an ambitious medical professional that runs a psychiatric hospital in the Northern part of the Bay Area in California. However, like all characters in the Murphy-verse, he is flawed, fractured and is struggling with his own demons as he attempts to manage a staff of Type-a nurses — specifically the newest addition Nurse Mildred Ratched (Sarah Paulson) and her adversary, Nurse Betsy Bucket (two-time Oscar nominee Judy Davis). On top of that, as his flaws slowly unravel and expose his narcissism he deals with his patients that range from an unhinged serial killer (Finn Wittrock) to a woman grappling with multiple personality disorder (Sophie Okonedo).

The 2020 Emmy race for Best Movie/Limited Actor is full of veteran movie stars, but there’s a chance the award could go to a newcomer. One of the Expert journalists we’ve surveyed, Matt Webb Mitovich (TVLine), and one of Gold Derby’s own Editors, Riley Chow, is predicting an upset for Paul Mescal, who plays a lovestruck young man in the Irish romance “Normal People.” At age 24, he would continue the recent trend of younger actors beating decorated veterans in this category. Darren Criss has been a very busy guy. The actor and musician stars as aspiring director Raymond Ainsley on Netflix’s “Hollywood,” on which Criss also serves as an executive producer. He is also creator and star of the new short form series “Royalties,” which debuted its first few episodes June 1 on Quibi with more on the way. In our exclusive video interview recorded in late May (watch above), the Emmy winner talks about reuniting with his longtime collaborator Ryan Murphy, as well as the pressures of juggling two shows at the same time.

Although “Hollywood” and “Royalties” mark Criss’ first credits as a producer in television, the transition came very easily to the actor. “In my mind I’ve always been producing,” he declares, “obviously not to the degree that I have in the past year alone.

Over the years the Emmy race for Best Movie/Limited Actor has been ruled by veteran thespians, from character actors to Oscar-winning movie stars. But there has been a shift in the last three years. Up-and-comers under age 35 have been winning, and they’ve actually been getting younger. That could be good news for “Hollywood” stars Jeremy Pope and David Corenswet, two 20-somethings in a field of seasoned rivals.
In 2017 the Emmy went to 34-year-old Riz Ahmed for the criminal justice drama “The Night Of.” He wasn’t a household name at the time, but he still managed to overcome A-listers Benedict Cumberbatch (“Sherlock: The Lying Detective”), Robert De Niro (“The Wizard of Lies”), Ewan McGregor (“Fargo”), Geoffrey Rush (“Genius”) and Ahmed’s own co-star John Turturro.

There’s a scene early on in Ryan Murphy’s new Netflix period drama “Hollywood,” in which an aspiring director, played by Darren Criss, meets with Chinese-American actress Anna May Wong, played by Michelle Krusiec, to try to convince her to be in his movie. Midway through their conversation he casually mentions that he’s half-Filipino, which seems to catch her off guard. She stops, takes off her glasses to see him better, and then says, “You’re Asian?”
What follows is a conversation not only about what it means to be an Asian-American person in Hollywood, but the further consequences that come with looking like one.
Krusiec as Wong — a 1920s and ’30s Hollywood star whose studio career all but came to an end after she was passed over for the Oscar-winning adaptation of Pearl S. Buck’s “The Good Earth” in favor of a white actress in yellowface — gives Criss’ character,...

What feels like five hundred years ago in January, Russell Crowe won Best Movie/Limited Actor at the Golden Globes for playing Roger Ailes in “The Loudest Voice.” He wasn’t on-hand to collect that award because of wildfires raging in his native Australia, but presenter Jennifer Aniston read his heartfelt speech. Now the whole world is in a completely different kind of crisis that calls into question entertainment events for the rest of the year or more, so will he get another chance to make his “Voice” heard at the Emmys this fall?

“Make no mistake, the tragedy in Australia is climate change-based. We need to act based on science, move our global workforce to renewable energy and respect our planet for the unique and amazing place it is. That way, we all have a future,” said Crowe’s Globes statement.

“Impeachment: American Crime Story” is not going to start airing on FX ahead of the 2020 Presidential election as originally planned.
FX chairman John Landgraf made the announcement Thursday at the Television Critics Association winter press tour. Landgraf said that Ryan Murphy is currently directing a feature film and will be unavailable to begin production until late March. Production on the 10-episode season is not slated to end until October. Given the usual length of the post-production process, the show will likely not air its first episode before the election on Nov. 3. When it was first announced back in August, FX had originally planned to air the show beginning in September.

We're running down our favorite shows of the decade! In addition to our favorite action/adventure series and favorite procedurals, and relationship-focused programming, and supernatural series! Now, let's take a look at limited/anthology series!
Here is a reminder that we have almost two dozen favorites lists, and since we couldn't showcase every show on every list, we parsed them out a bit to make it more fun.
And these lists are not in any particular order. They're in the order the entries were received by TV Fanatic staff, so don't read into them!
To qualify, a show that began in another decade had to be airing during the decade, run a larger number of seasons from 2010 through 2019 if it started before 2010 or run the entire decade. Here we go!

Whether or not queer roles should be given to straight actors or remain reserved for queer actors is a highly complicated question.
One that results in many opinions and contains several different arguments.
For some, this is an easy and resounding "no," end of discussion. While others, including the actors that portray these characters, have other perspectives.
The initial concern is that if straight actors are limited exclusively to straight roles, then queer actors should be limited to queer roles.
And certainly, queer actors don't want to be pigeon-holed into only portraying queer characters.
That is where the problem lies. It's a fact that there will never be a shortage of straight roles, resulting in queer roles as the forever minority.
If we replace "queer" with "racial minority," there would be no question that people of color should always portray their own stories.
Especially with the recent backlash of Emma Stone...

The first full trailer for Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk’s FX series “American Horror Story: 1984,” the ninth season of the “Ahs” anthology, has dropped. As suggested by early teases, this season is indeed a homage to the teen slashers of the 1980s, but this time fully embracing the latent queerness of such films as “Friday the 13th” and “Nightmare on Elm Street.”
The cast, some of whom are openly Lgbtq, includes Cody Fern, Emma Roberts, Olympic athlete Gus Kenworthy, Billie Lourd, Leslie Grossman, John Carroll Lynch, Angelica Ross, Matthew Morrison, DeRon Horton, and Zach Villa. Kenworthy has had bit parts on TV before, but this is the skier’s first starring vehicle.
This cast would ordinarily be an almost embarrassing display of hotness, but not in these clothes. The period-specific ’80s garb looks more like the idea of ’80s fashion, from Cody Fern’s bleach-streaked wig to Gus Kenworthy’s crop-top and short-shorts.

A third installment of “American Crime Story” is officially on the way. “Impeachment: American Crime Story,” which will follow the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal, will premiere on Sunday, Sept. 27, 2020 at 10/9c, FX announced Tuesday at the Television Critics Association summer press tour.
Set to begin production in February and written by Sarah Burgess, the season will follow the presidential impeachment hearings in the wake of the 1998 scandal with a focus on Linda Tripp, Monica Lewinsky and Paula Jones. Sarah Paulson will star as Tripp, Beanie Feldstein will play Lewinsky and Annaleigh Ashford will portray Jones. Burgess will also be an executive producer alongside Ryan Murphy, Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, Brad Falchuk, Larry Karaszewski, Scott Alexander, Alexis Martin Woodall and Paulson.

FX has announced the next season of “American Crime Story,” and they’d be hard-pressed to find a more relevant title, let alone subject, for today’s turbulent political moment. “Impeachment: American Crime Story” will focus on the women swept up in President Bill Clinton’s 1998 impeachment proceedings, specifically Paula Jones, Monica Lewinsky (who will serve as a producer), and Linda Tripp.
Production is slated to begin in February 2020, and FX has already set a Sunday, September 27, 2020 release date for the new season.
“FX’s ‘American Crime Story’ franchise has become a cultural touchstone, providing greater context for stories that deserve greater understanding like the O.J. Simpson trial and saga, and Andrew Cunanan’s tragic crime spree which concluded with the assassination of Gianni Versace,” FX Networks and Productions Chairman John Landgraf said in a statement. “This franchise re-examines some of the most complicated, polarizing stories in recent history in a way that is relevant,...

It seems Ryan Murphy has changed his mind about taking on the Monica Lewinsky-Bill Clinton scandal, as it will be the focus of the next season of “American Crime Story” — which will star Sarah Paulson, Beanie Feldstein and Annaleigh Ashford, and is produced by Lewinsky herself — FX Networks and FX Productions chairman John Landgraf said during the Television Critics Association press tour Tuesday.
The third season of the anthology, titled “Impeachment: American Crime Story,” “unravels the national scandal that swept up Paula Jones (played by Ashford), Monica Lewinsky (Feldstein) and Linda Tripp (Paulson) as principal characters in the country’s first impeachment proceedings in over a century.”
Sarah Burgess writes and will executive produce alongside Murphy, Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, Brad Falchuk, Larry Karaszewski, Scott Alexander, Alexis Martin Woodall and Sarah Paulson. Lewinsky will serve as producer on “Impeachment,” as will Henrietta Conrad and Jemima Khan.
