After fourteen years, a new volume of the Bhf Book of Horror Stories shuffles its way out of the crypt! And this time we’ve been to the movies. This third collection features more than thirty original tales, inspired by and often featuring favourite characters and situations from British fright films:

This French disc release of the Jacques Tourneur classic gets everything right — including both versions in picture perfect transfers. Devil debunker Dana Andrews locks horns with Niall MacGinnis, a necromancer “who has decoded the Old Book” and can summon a fire & brimstone monster from Hell, no election fraud necessary. Even fans that hate ghost stories love this one — it’s a truly creepy, intelligent highlight of the horror genre.

The team behind the now defunct Fantastic Films Weekend (Ffw) has reformed and regrouped as Fantastiq and will present the first edition from August 9-11 at Derby Quad in the UK.
Cinema Retro will be present in the form of Hammer’s quirky horror tale Vampire Circus, which we are sponsoring. The film’s director Robert Young will be present to talk about the 1973 film, one of the run of off-kilter shockers that Hammer produced in the Seventies.
Director Robert Young
The director of Fantastiq is Tony Earnshaw, formerly Head of Film Programming at the National Media Museum in Bradford where he launched the Ffw in 2002. He said: “I’m genuinely delighted to be able to resurrect my pet project, albeit under a new name. And I’m thrilled to welcome Cinema Retro on board as a key supporter along with We Belong Dead magazine and publisher Spectral Press, which...

There are shots of the Vincentennial, the Legacy of Vincent Price exhibit that was at the Sheldon Art Galleries here including pics of items from the collections of Vincentennial participants Rick Squires, Robert Taylor, and Sara Waugh as well as a great shot of the life size Vincent Price figures at the exhibit that were sculpted and loaned by Cortland Hull. The 16th annual Bradford International Film Festival, which will run March 18-28, is a total celebration of all forms of cinema, from classic films to modern world cinema to a tribute to Cinerama and more. But, most excitingly, is a bombastic collection of some of the best, most exciting underground films being made today.
From Bad Lit’s perspective, the most thrilling screening of the entire 10-day affair is the new film by British filmmaker Peter Whitehead, Terrorism Considered as One of the Fine Arts. In the U.S., Whitehead is a “lost” filmmaker from the underground’s heyday in the ’60s, being left out of most histories of the underground movement. Whitehead directed several influential films, including Wholly Communion and The Fall, before dropping out of filmmaking in the mid-’70s.
Film historian Jack Sargeant wrote extensively about and interviewed Whitehead for his wonderful book on Beat cinema, Naked Lens.

Lee Pfeiffer reports on Cinema Retro's fourth and final day at the festival.
Although the film festival was to conclude the following day with widescreen showings of The Electric Horseman and Year of the Dragon, this would be the last day Dave Worrall and I could attend. As such, we had to devote a good deal of time to business meetings and schmoozing with friends and colleagues. However, in the morning we attended Cineramacana, a fun potpourri of weird short films, odd reels and (inexplicably) a trailer for Yentl which only serves to remind us that middle-aged Barbra Streisand posing as a teenage boy was the least convincing casting since Duke Wayne played Ghengis Khan in The Conqueror. Oy vey! Couldn't someone have stopped this ludicrous vanity piece from going into production? This segment of the festival also presented a lovely nature film sans narration that was produced on a budget of fifty pounds!

Cinema Retro publishers Lee Pfeiffer and Dave Worrall attended the Bradford International Film Festival in Bradford, England last week. Here is Lee Pfeiffer's second report:

Cinema Retro publishers Lee Pfeiffer and Dave Worrall attended the Bradford International Film Festival in Bradford, England last week. Here is Lee Pfeiffer's first report:
For many years, we had heard about the exciting events that take place at the annual Bradford International Film Festival. The festival is held at the National Media Museum, which is a state-of-the-art showcase for the history of British film, TV, photography and new media. Over the last fifteen years, the festival has hosted world premieres, classic film screenings and internationally acclaimed interview sessions with actors and filmmakers. Although the festival has proven to be a popular attraction, Bradford's distance from London (several hours north) has kept many movie fans from attending. As most of our dealings are generally in London, we fall into that category ourselves. However, we learned that passing up on this festival is a major faux pas on behalf of any serious movie lover.
