Before booting up M3GAN for producers James Wan and Jason Blum, Gerard Johnstone made his feature directorial debut on Housebound, an awesome horror comedy that’s brimming with bloody fun.
In the film, a young woman is forced to return to her childhood home after being placed under house arrest, where she suspects that something evil may be lurking.
If you’ve never seen this horror classic, it’s now streaming on the Bloody Disgusting-powered Screambox!
Megan previously wrote about Housebound a few years ago. Here’s her breakdown:
“Written and directed by Gerard Johnstone, Housebound is a brilliant feature debut that makes you wonder when his sophomore feature might be on its way. A horror-comedy can be a tricky enough thing to pull off- rarely are the scales of humor and horror in balance- but Johnstone infuses dark comedy with genuine suspense. There’s even some touching family drama to ground it all.

When Blumhouse dropped the trailer for the new killer doll movie "M3GAN," the internet exploded. The film sees producer James Wan and writer Akela Cooper reuniting following their bonkers horror fever dream "Malignant," bringing on New Zealand director Gerard Johnstone to tell the story of a roboticist named Gemma (Allison Williams), who gifts her recently orphaned niece Cady (Violet McGraw) a life-like A.I. doll meant to serve as a de facto best friend and babysitter. Unfortunately, as any killer doll story could have predicted, M3GAN has more than just playtime on her mind. Whether it's the dead-eyed dance moves or the fact the doll looks upsettingly close to the Renesmee Cullen robot baby of the "Twilight" films, people can't stop talking about "M3GAN" having the potential to be the next "Malignant."
Don't get it twisted, Wan and Cooper truly made something magical with last year's most-talked-about horror film, but...

Permanently pissed-off Kylie Bucknell is, after a bungled robbery, forced by the courts to return to her family home when she’s given an eight-month home detention sentence. Her punishment for a botched Atm raid is made all the more intolerable by the fact she has to live with her over-bearing motor-mouth mother Miriam who’s convinced the house is haunted. But after dismissing Miriam’s superstitions, rebellious Kylie too starts hearing unsettling whispers in the dark, creaking floorboards and strange bumps in the night. Has she inherited her mother’s overactive imagination or is there indeed evil afoot between the windows and doors?

This New Zealand haunted-house romp moves between gore, laughs and eerie suggestion with aplomb
This off-kilter horror-comedy from writer/director Gerard Johnstone (best known for TV’s The Jaquie Brown Diaries) has something of the suburban satire of Peter Jackson’s Braindead mixed with the eeriness of Wes Craven’s The People Under the Stairs. When stroppy delinquent Kylie Bucknell (Morgana O’Reilly) is placed under house arrest in her childhood home, she comes to believe that her mother’s tales of hauntings may be more than just small-town madness. Enlisting the help of security-guard-slash-ghostbuster Amos (Glen-Paul Waru), Kylie unravels dark secrets about the house and its grisly history. Swerving between Babadook-style suggestion and outright splatter, Housebound juggles its tonal variations with aplomb. O’Reilly is terrific as the sneery discontent at the centre of the madcap maelstrom, while Rima Te Wiata walks a wonderfully fine line between pathos and...

“What are you gonna do against a hostile spirit?” “I’m gonna smash it in the face.” Those who caught the New Zealand horror-comedy Housebound last year may remember this spirited exchange, which perfectly captures the attitude of protagonist Kylie Bucknell, one who is not the type to cower from the paranormal activity that runs rampant in her mother’s home.
After receiving positive reviews across the board—including Peter Jackson of Lord of the Rings and Dead Alive fame—director Kylie Bucknell’s Housebound will be reimagined for North American audiences by New Line.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, New Line, aka the house that Freddy built, has acquired the rights to remake Housebound, with Johnstone attached as a producer. The folks at New Line are looking for a writer to pen the adaptation, as well as a director for the project (perhaps they will be one and the...

Housebound - Blu-ray and DVD Director: Gerard Johnstone Cast: Morgana O'Reilly, Rima Te Wiata, Glen-Paul Waru, Ross Harper To quote my review from its world premiere at SXSW,"Housebound is a breath of fresh air for the often stale haunted-house genre; a smart, finely acted, appropriately silly and yet totally sincere horror movie made for people who have seen it all and want something a little different." It may not the scariest movie of the year, but Housebound is unquestionably one of the most entertaining and original. It's got an exceptional cast, a smart premise, and a real handle on when to be funny, when to be creepy, and when to collide the two. It's one of the best horror movies of 2014, so do not miss...

Welcome back to This Week In Discs! If you see something you like, click on the title to buy it from Amazon. Housebound Kylie (Morgana O’Reilly) has made a series of poor decisions of late with the most recent one seeing her sentenced to several months of house arrest in the home where she grew up, and the prospect of living beneath the same roof as her mom is more terrifying than jail. The two clash almost immediately, but their battle of wills is interrupted by the realization that the house may be haunted by the restless spirit of a teenage girl who was murdered there before Kylie’s mom bought the place. With the help of Amos (Glen-Paul Waru), a security guard with a belief in the supernatural, she sets out to identify the murderer and set the trapped spirit free. It should surprise no one that this may not be a wise decision. I...

Home is Where the Horror Is: Johnson’s Ozzie Horror Tickles Rather Than Chills
Fans of Peter Jackson’s early works of zany, comedy horror will most likely revel in Gerard Johnstone’s debut, Housebound, as this sometimes feels like a distant cousin to 1992’s Dead Alive. Never very horrific in its haunted house cum hider in the house scenario that recalls Wes Craven’s most enjoyably camp film, The People Under the Stairs (1991), Johnstone gets a lot of mileage out of a pair of entertaining characterizations that tend to override its rather glum and inexpressive visual palette. Those that tend to shirk away from high doses of goofiness in their genre films will certainly find this a bit too saccharine, especially as it never registers any strength as either a horror film or effective comedy in its hybrid scenario.

In its crazy-quilt plot, Housebound features a vicious killer, a gaggle of ghosts, and all manner of madcap fools, qualities that make the movie hard to categorize -- horror-comedy? mystery-thriller? -- but lots of fun to watch. For her failed attempt to rob an Atm, Kylie (Morgana O’Reilly) receives a truly terrifying sentence: eight months of home detention at her mother’s New Zealand country house, which appears to be haunted. Aided by a local security guard (Glen-Paul Waru) who happens to be an amateur parapsychologist, Kylie begins trying to solve the mystery of who murdered the home’s ghostly inhabitants 20 years before. Housebound is a tad long, and its murder mystery a bit of a muddle, but that doesn’t matter. The final thir...

While I don’t often turn to New Zealand when looking for the next great horror comedy, maybe I should start, because Houseound is a bloody bit of raucous fun. Written and directed by newcomer Gerard Johnstone, this entertaining haunted-house-romp strikes a fair balance between comedic playfulness and gory horror that’s well suited for thrill-seekers and laugh-lovers alike. Some might assume being held under house arrest with your parents is the scariest scenario as far as home-centric horror is concerned, but Johnstone assures us that much more haunting events exist. And no, I’m not talking about throwing more relatives into the mix, either.
Morgana O’Reilly plays Kylie Bucknell, a perpetual troublemaker sentenced to a prolonged home dentition fate after botching an Atm robbery. Immediately greeted by her talkative mother Miriam (Rima Te Wiata), a flood of teenage angst washes over Kylie as she copes with her new living situation through shameful ignorance.

“What are you gonna do against a hostile spirit?” “I’m gonna smash it in the face.” Kylie Bucknell is definitely not the type to cower from the slightest paranormal activity, but when she’s placed on house arrest in her intensely haunted childhood home, her nerves and ghost-fighting skills will be tested. A horror-comedy that had its first Us showing at SXSW earlier this year, Housebound has unleashed a new trailer.

"A troubled young woman is convicted of petty felonies and forced to withstand house arrest in the home of her estranged mother, blank slate of a stepfather, and a bunch of evil spirits who make creepy noises..."
Yeah, Housebound probably sounds like a mash-up of two or three clunkers you'd probably rent from Redbox and end up hating. Something about terms like "troubled woman," "house arrest," "estranged mother," and "evil spirits" can make a movie sound like a dry and predictable affair. Fortunately that is not the case with Housebound, which comes from New Zealand and therefore has a strong sense of humor, a nice dose of legitimate creepiness, a decent portion of gory mayhem, and some very appealing performers. Housebound is more of a horror / thriller / mystery with a good sense of humor than it is a horror comedy, but whatever the "subgenre," it's always nice when a film can deliver scares,...

Fresh off its Monday night premiere at SXSW and last week's reveal of an awesome piece of poster art, Housebound continues the fun with a pretty hilarious new clip, which gives new meaning to the term "pee break." Enjoy!
Directed by Gerard Johnstone, the film stars Morgana O’Reilly, Rima Te Wiata, Glen-Paul Waru, Cameron Rhodes, Millen Baird, Ross Harper, Bruce Hopkins, Ryan Lampp, Ian Mune, and Wallace Chapman.
Synopsis
Kylie Bucknell is forced to return to the house she grew up in when the court places her on home detention. Her punishment is made all the more unbearable by the fact she has to live there with her mother, Miriam – a well-intentioned blabbermouth who’s convinced that the house is haunted. Kylie dismisses Miriam’s superstitions as nothing more than a distraction from a life occupied by boiled vegetables and small town gossip. However, when she, too, becomes privy...

Sundance just ended, and we are already preparing for the next big film festival, South By Southwest. Not too long ago, the festival announced a few of the films premiering this year, but now they’ve announced the main slate. The midnight selections and some inevitable late-breaking additions are still to be announced, but this should be more than enough to get you excited. Along with many World Premieres, and Sundance favorites like Richard Linklater’s Boyhood and Gareth Evans’ The Raid 2, the line up also includes an anniversary screening of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and an extended Q&A screening of The Grand Budapest Hotel with Wes Anderson. SXSW 2014 runs March 7 through 15 in Austin, Texas. Check out the line up after the jump.

The 2014 SXSW "Film Features Program" includes 115 titles, and along with the previously announced zombie culture documentary Doc of the Dead, there's a lot for the horror crowd...
...including special screenings of the original Godzilla and Texas Chain Saw Massacre, early looks at upcoming TV shows "From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series" and "Penny Dreadful," the U.S. premiere of Alejandro Jodorowsky's The Dance of Reality, and new films from the Spierig brothers, Nacho Vigalondo, and Jim Jarmusch.
The genre-heavy "Midnighter" lineup will be announced next week along with the list of short films, but in the meantime here are the horror highlights (or what we assume will be of interest given their descriptions) to be on the lookout for during the fest.
Note that new for 2014, they've introduced the "Episodic" category, created to highlight innovative new work hitting the small screen.

After announcing earlier this month that Jon Favreau’s Chef and the Veronica Mars movie will be making their world debuts at SXSW this year, the festival has revealed its full line-up, including further very promising world premieres, alongside appearances from some of the year’s most high-profile films.
The Midnight programme will be announced early next month, along with the Shorts line-up, and the complete Conference slate a little later as well.
Led by Seth Rogen and Zac Efron, Nicholas Stoller’s anticipated R-rated comedy, Neighbors, will be making its world debut at the festival, notably marked out as a ‘work-in-progress’ ahead of its theatrical release in May.
David Gordon Green’s acclaimed Joe will make its Us premiere, having bowed at Venice and then Toronto last year. Early reviews have Nicolas Cage giving one of the finest performances of his career, with Tye Sheridan (Mud) excellent alongside him.

Not sure if there is a Short Term 12 equivalent in this year’s Narrative Feature Comp, but on paper SXSW programmers are serving up a mean (and the usual lean group of 8 out of a whopping 1,324 film entries) for the upcoming competitiuon of eight which includes notable entries (that we’ve been tracking for a good time now) such as Zachary Wigon’s The Heart Machine, John Magary’s The Mend, Leah Meyerhoff’s I Believe in Unicorns and Lawrence Michael Levine’s Wild Canaries. Undoubtedly one of the most anticipated docs of the year, on the non-fiction side we find Margaret Brown’s The Great Invisible. Below you’ll find a breakdown of the other sections (notable world preems in We’ll Never Have Paris and Faults (see Mary Elizabeth Winstead above), some Sundance items with Texan connections and other nuggets.
