San Francisco, Aug 11 (Ians) Regulators in the US state of California have given the green signal to autonomous car companies Cruise and Waymo to run commercial robotaxi services across San Francisco 24/7.
After a six-hour hearing, The California Public Utilities Commission’s (Cpuc) voted in favour of the companies late on Thursday, despite protests from residents and city agencies, reports TechCrunch.
Cruise and Waymo currently offer limited paid services in San Francisco, with a human safety operator present.
The permit extension allows the companies to expand their services significantly and with no limit on the number of robotaxis they can put on the roads, said the report.
“Today is the first of many steps in bringing Av transportation services to Californians,” said Cpuc Commissioner John Reynolds.
Waymo said the decision as “a major moment” in the history of autonomous vehicles.

San Francisco, April 8 (Ians) Automaker Gm’s self-driving car Cruise Av crashed into a city bus after its self-driving software failed to predict the movement of the vehicle. The company has now issued a voluntary recall to update the software in 300 robotaxis.
This issue resulted in a single collision on March 23, 2023, in which a Cruise Av inaccurately predicted the movement of an articulated San Francisco Municipal Transit Authority (Muni) bus.
The Cruise self-driving software failed to accurately predict the movement of the bus and struck the back after “decelerating too late to avoid a rear-end collision with the bus”.
Kyle Vogt, Cruise Founder and CEO, said that “fender benders like this rarely happen to our AVs, but this incident was unique.”
“We do not expect our vehicles to run into the back of a city bus under any conditions, so even a single incident like this was worthy of immediate and careful study,...

Moby will executive produce and provide music for “Meat the Future,” a new documentary about the revolutionary new practice of “cultivated” meat. In addition, conservation legend Dr. Jane Goodall has signed on to narrate the film, which is directed by Liz Marshall, the award-winning filmmaker behind “The Ghosts in Our Machine” and “Water on the Table.”
“Over five years, our lens was situated at the forefront of a historic and hopeful movement of change,” Marshall said in a statement. “That the future holds for cultivated meat is unclear, but I believe its revolutionary journey into the world will stand the test of time.”
“Meat the Future” follows Dr. Uma Valeti (pictured above), as he sets out to create a process where real meat is produced sustainably without the need to breed, raise and kill animals. That process, cultivated meat, is a food innovation that grows meat from animal cells, and...

The entrepreneur Kevin Lin -- who co-founded Twitch in 2017 alongside Emmett Shear, Justin Kan, Kyle Vogt, and Michael Seibel -- is departing the company after twelve and a half years.
“After many months of contemplation, I’ve decided it’s time to journey into my next adventure,” Lin wrote in a Medium post announcing his exit. “Twitch is a wonderfully poggers thing through which I have met so many great friends, experienced so many cultures, and shared in the heights of human connection. Twitch has forever widened my worldview and given me purpose.”
Next up, he says, he plans on taking a brief breather, but vows, “I will build again” -- specifically in the realm of technology that can serve as a “positive amplifier in our lives,” he writes.

Ah, the Ziegfeld Theatre. The refined, legendary movie house in New York City has played host to hundreds of A-list affairs since its 1969 opening, premiering hundreds of critically-lauded, star-studded films. (Oh, hi Steven Spielberg, Julia Roberts, and Daniel Radcliffe!) Last night was a different story. After spending months showing Tommy Wiseau's cult film The Room at New York's dingy Village East Cinema on the last Friday of every month, Saturation Films -- the folks who stage the screenings -- decided to class things up a bit by relocating this month's midnight screening of "the Citizen Kane of bad movies" to the Ziegfeld.
