This four-feature set is the weirdest cinematic treasure box of the year, a sort of anti-matter film school. Three of the films are derived from a single Yugoslavian picture rejected by Roger Corman. His acolytes Jack Hill and Stephanie Rothman proceeded to add serial killings, supernatural hauntings, a goofy vampire, and an ending that could be called 'Zombies In The Wax Museum.' Tim Lucas tells the whole story in a fascinating feature-length extra docu. On the back of buzzy premieres in Berlinale and most recently SXSW, Jeff Nichols has earned acclaim for his fourth film, which marks his first collaboration with a major studio and makes its way into Us cinemas on Friday through Warner Bros.
Nichols regular Michael Shannon stars alongside Joel Edgerton, Kirsten Dunst, Adam Driver, Sam Shepard and newcomer Jaeden Lieberher in Midnight Special, which retains the film-maker’s signature ‘slow-burn tension build’ and ups the ante. His latest film is a sci-fi thriller with car chases, special effects, low-lit cinematography, and a powerful story of a father’s love for his son.
Back in his hometown of Austin, Texas, for SXSW, Nichols spoke to Tiffany Pritchard about the transition from indie to mainstream, and why that matters not when it comes to telling stories and touching the hearts of audiences.
Many are likening Midnight Special to Take Shelter, both in its underlying supernatural elements and its focus...

Constance Cummings: Stage and film actress ca. early 1940s. Constance Cummings on stage: From Sacha Guitry to Clifford Odets (See previous post: “Constance Cummings: Flawless 'Blithe Spirit,' Supporter of Political Refugees.”) In the post-World War II years, Constance Cummings' stage reputation continued to grow on the English stage, in plays as diverse as: Stephen Powys (pseudonym for P.G. Wodehouse) and Guy Bolton's English-language adaptation of Sacha Guitry's Don't Listen, Ladies! (1948), with Cummings as one of shop clerk Denholm Elliott's mistresses (the other one was Betty Marsden). “Miss Cummings and Miss Marsden act as fetchingly as they look,” commented The Spectator. Rodney Ackland's Before the Party (1949), delivering “a superb performance of controlled hysteria” according to theater director and Michael Redgrave biographer Alan Strachan, writing for The Independent at the time of Cummings' death. Clifford Odets' Winter Journey / The Country Girl (1952), as...

“The Voice” walked away with an Emmy on Sunday night, but according to a new lawsuit, it also walked away with the concept of the show itself — and now the supposed creator wants some payback. According to a lawsuit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court earlier this month, Irish citizen Michael Roy Barry created the concept for the international franchise “The Voice,” and had the idea stolen from him. Also read: Emmys: ‘The Voice’ Wins Award That Has Eluded ‘American Idol’ 9 Times Barry claims that he created the concept for a show titled “Voice of America” in 2008. Barry’s series.

We know you're used to the finer things in life, Orange County, California: the beautiful weather, the bodacious babes, the glitz and glamour. Well, there's a horror fest on the horizon that is going to strip away all the beauty that is Orange County and bring a little darkness to the area. Say hello to the Everybody Dies Horror Film Festival.
Scheduled for October 21-22, the Everybody Dies Horror Film Festival will be presenting two days of debauchery, and we've got the names of the first two films right in our grubby little paws. Both shorts, the first two films announced are Nowhere Road, a horror/thriller directed by Benjamin Dynice, and Horror Movies Suck, a horror/comedy helmed by John Mark Triplett.
Festival organizers have given Everybody Dies the tagline Orange County, you've got red on you. I think you can count on plenty of the red, red kroovy.

“I like the concept of a film that can try to operate on two levels. One, it has to operate on an extremely personal level because you have to find some direct link to an emotion or a feeling you’ve had. I think it has to be a direct link – a palpable feeling that you’ve had otherwise it won’t translate to the audience. Then at the same time, you need to find a bigger topic or idea that you need to talk about. I’m a big believer in trying to balance those two things. It’s tricky, it’s hard, it doesn’t always happen, but it’s the goal.”
That is what director Jeff Nichols said to me in a recent interview about the visual style of his upcoming film Take Shelter. The link or emotion he’s referring to is anxiety and the anxiety throughout the film is palpable.

Earlier this year during Frameline 32 when I mentioned to friends that I had invited Alessandro Calza—one of the leading actors in Yen Tan’s Ciao—over to my house for wild rice sour cream waffles, they tried to invite themselves over … and it wasn’t for my infamous wild rice sour cream waffles! Fortunately, my withering glance was more than enough to keep them at bay so that I could conduct my interview with the film’s director and lead actor with a certain measure of professionalism; though I have to admit that the informal quality of our conversation made for a much more pleasant experience. Ciao was one of my favorite films from Frameline 32. It’s now in its theatrical run and though—as indicated by Dave Hudson’s aggregate of reviews at The Greencine Daily—the critical response has not been altogether favorable; I can, without hesitation,...
