1. Green Room, 2015
A little-known punk band, The Ain't Rights, travels through the province trying to make a living. The road leads them to a club for Nazis, where the guys witness a murder. On the one hand, they understand that no one is going to let them off so easily now, but on the other hand, what can they do against a crowd of aggressive, armed skinheads? So far the musicians, locked in a small room, are still alive, but it is not clear how to get out of this situation without casualties.
From the description, Green Room may seem like a high-speed action movie, but in reality this is not entirely true – this...

Global Screen, the Munich-based international sales outfit, has boarded worldwide sales on “The Trek,” the upcoming first feature from leading South African cinematographer and director Meekaaeel Adam. The film is a horror-Western, in which starvation, suspicion and madness plague a family as they cross the Kalahari Desert under the eyes of primeval spirits.
“The Trek” is set in 1846, when a Dutch-Afrikaans family and their British travel companion set off on a challenging journey through the Kalahari Desert. Along the way, they meet Atshumao, a stoic man of the Khoen people, one of Southern Africa’s original indigenous, nomadic population groups.
Despite Atshumao’s warning, the group attempts a shortcut through the unforgiving landscape, unaware that this will lead them to cross paths with two ancestral spirits – who will settle a centuries-old dispute by betting on the family’s lives. The group of travelers is soon plagued by misfortune, tragedy, thirst,...

I first reviewed Green Room back in 2017 for my blog Wight Blood and gave it a score of 9/10. I don’t think I have watched it since so with this Second Sight 4k/Blu-ray release, I had the opportunity to see if it was just as good on second viewing.
The movie follows a punk band as they attempt to tour and book a last-minute gig at a neo-nazi bar with the promise of some decent money. They play the gig and attempt to leave as quickly as possible but after they witness something they shouldn’t have, things turn nasty and they get stuck in the green room with nowhere to go.

Marvel’s Blade has been dulled yet again, as star Aaron Pierre has exited the project, marking just the most recent snag in the project, which is set to be part of Phase Six in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
As Pierre confirmed to Variety, “Early on, there were conversations…As the project evolved, I’m no longer part of that — attached.” Pierre’s character in Marvel’s Blade was unknown.
There has been a lot of change throughout the development of Marvel’s revisiting of the Blade franchise, most of which relates to talent behind the camera. For starters, Watchmen’s Stacy Osei-Kuffour was hired as writer in 2021 before being replaced by Michael Starrbury (Colin in Black & White) and a handful of others, including True Detective’s Nic Pizzolatto and later Logan’s Michael Green. It’s widely believed that Aaron Pierre’s character would be dropped as subsequent drafts came in.

Aaron Pierre is no longer attached to Marvel’s upcoming “Blade” film, Variety has learned.
The actor revealed the update to Variety on the red carpet for the 55th NAACP Image Awards.

Named Nocturna, the Muschiettis will co-own the label and will run its creative direction. The focus of Nocturna will be on high quality, genre features for global audiences in both theatrical and streaming, with the goal of producing two films per year.

Writer-director Jeremy Saulnier talks to us about the making of the 2015 survival thriller Green Room, which is getting a new disc release this month.
In October 2014, writer-director Jeremy Saulnier had a bit of a problem. Green Room, the follow-up to his micro-budget thriller, Blue Ruin, was nearing the start of shooting, but he still hadn’t managed to cast the role of Darcy – a club owner and leader of a group of rural Neo-Nazis. Most worryingly, as sets for the film were being built, Green Room’s financiers had threatened to withdraw funding if Saulnier couldn’t find a ‘name’ actor.
Fortunately for Saulnier, the script had been sent out to the legendary Patrick Stewart, and despite – or perhaps because of – the less-than-appealing nature of the Darcy character, he agreed to star at the last minute. “He kind of saved the movie,” Saulnier tells us almost a decade on.

Following beloved indies like “Blue Ruin,” “Green Room,” and 2018’s “Hold the Dark,” it’s been several years since we’ve heard from filmmaker Jeremy Saulnier. Saulnier does have a new movie in the can, “Rebel Ridge,” but in a new interview, he describes the making of it as “tumultuous” and admits it was shot three different times (or at least it sounds like there were three different times production attempted to begin).

I have been a fan of director Jeremy Saulnier’s work ever since his feature debut Murder Party was given a home video release back in 2007, and it has been great to watch his career progress through Blue Ruin, Green Room, Hold the Dark, and episodes of True Detective season 3. Anything he does will have my attention, so I was excited when another Saulnier film called Rebel Ridge was announced back in 2019. Unfortunately, we still haven’t seen Rebel Ridge because the Netflix production was delayed by the pandemic lockdowns, then by the departure of lead actor John Boyega a few weeks into filming, reportedly due to “family reasons.” Saulnier did eventually manage to make the movie, though, and he talked about the troubled production during a recent interview with Film Stories.

Jeremy Saulnier’s thriller Rebel Ridge was disrupted by the pandemic and the sudden departure of John Boyega. He talks exclusively to us about its “tumultuous” production.
With such taut, superbly-shot thrillers as Blue Ruin and Green Ruin to his name, interest has been high in writer-director Jeremy Saulnier’s next film, Rebel Ridge. Bankrolled by Netflix and originally due to begin filming in April 2020, however, its production was beset by problems, including a pandemic-induced delay and the sudden departure of its star, John Boyega.
Speaking exclusively to Film Stories, Jeremy Saulnier – who’s promoting a new home release of his 2015 thriller, Green Room – described the making of Rebel Ridge as “tumultuous.”
“We came back three years in a row to make that movie,” he adds.
After Covid-19 saw Rebel Ridge’s production delayed in 2020, filming commenced in Louisiana the following spring, with Don Johnson, James Badge Dale, James Cromwell...

Being set around Halloween, Scream VI was packed with immediately recognizable horror costumes. Jason Voorhees. Freddy Krueger. Michael Myers. Pinhead. Not to mention Ghostface. They were all in there. But during a party scene, one of the characters is wearing a costume you might not recognize. It’s a knight’s suit of armor, but made out of cardboard. That’s the same costume the protagonist in the 2007 horror comedy Murder Party (watch it Here) wears. If you didn’t recognize it, then we have to tell you all about Murder Party – because it’s the Best Horror Movie You Never Saw.
Murder Party was the feature directorial debut of Jeremy Saulnier, who has gone on to direct films like the revenge thriller Blue Ruin, the neo-Nazi horror film Green Room, and the mystery thriller Hold the Dark, as well as episodes of True Detective season 3. Saulnier also wrote the screenplay for the film.

There’s something wonderfully nerve-rattling about a “survive the night” horror scenario, whether it’s a handful of strangers trying to fend off crazed zombies in “Night of the Living Dead” or a group of sarcastic Gen Z friends suspecting each other of murder in “Bodies Bodies Bodies.”
Here are some of our favorite entries in this subgenre, where the weapons are improvised, the stakes are life and death and there’s no guarantee anyone will get out alive.
We did not include movies that take place over a few days (like “Battle Royale”) or movies that aren’t streaming right now, like “Ready or Not.”

The first week of October is officially here, so it’s full steam ahead on the Halloween season from here on out. This week’s streaming picks embrace spooky season festivities by centering on holiday-themed horror movies that feature Halloween parties as their slaying grounds.
Some of these horror movies bring the fun, while others aim to spike your adrenaline. But all use Halloween parties as a centerpiece for the horror that’s unleashed within.
Here’s where you can stream them this week.

Cemetery of Terror – AMC+, Shudder
Rubén Galindo Jr.’s most prominent horror feature is the American-influenced Don’t Panic (available on Shudder), but the Halloween-centric Cemetery of Terror offers the most fun. A trio of college kids decides to impress their ladies by stealing a body from a morgue for a Halloween prank and party in an abandoned house.

“The Toxic Avenger” has returned.
The character, originated by director Lloyd Kaufman and his ultra low-budget production outfit Troma in 1984, has gone on to spawn several sequels, a stage musical and even a Saturday morning animated series called “The Toxic Crusader,” aimed squarely at the demographic that probably should have never been exposed to the character in the first place: children. But there’s never been a Hollywood remake of the movie — until now.
Macon Blair, perhaps best known for his collaborations with Jeremy Saulnier (and his role as Oppenheimer’s lawyer in “Oppenheimer”), has written and directed a new take on the material that both modernizes the character and keeps it firmly entrenched in the anything-for-a-laugh Troma mentality. This time around the character is played by Peter Dinklage, a sad sack single stepdad who gets exposed to toxic waste, turns into a monster and gets revenge on the company...

The power of Lloyd Kaufman, Michael Herz, and Joe Ritter's "The Toxic Avenger" is truly remarkable if you really think about it. Troma Films' 1984 low-budget, superhero-splatter comedy launched a franchise that included an animated series, an off-Broadway rock musical, three film sequels, and now a remake from Macon Blair for Legendary Pictures. We know that production on the film wrapped sometime in 2021, the film is stacked with film fanatic favorites, and that "Game of Thrones" star Peter Dinklage would be picking up the mop as the new Toxie. But today, after the wild and wonderful weirdos at Fantastic Fest announced that "The Toxic Avenger" would be opening this year's festival, even more exciting news came to the surface regarding the film.
"Let's start with the headline grabbers," Fantastic Fest tweeted. Opening night: 'The Toxic Avenger.' Peter Dinklage wields the mop. Jacob Tremblay, Taylour Paige, Elijah Wood, and Kevin Bacon rule.

The Toxic Avenger is a cult classic superhero black comedy film from 1984, written and directed by Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz. The film tells the story of Melvin, a nerdy janitor who falls into a vat of toxic waste and becomes a grotesque mutant with superhuman strength and a sense of justice. The film spawned three sequels, a musical, a cartoon series, and a loyal fan base.
Now, Legendary Pictures is bringing The Toxic Avenger back to the big screen with a reboot that promises to be a “contemporary reimagining” of the original. The reboot is written and directed by Macon Blair, who is known for his indie films such as I Don’t Feel At Home In This World Anymore and Blue Ruin. Vincent van der Valk stars in this horror, now in pre-production, about parents who, faced with their unborn daughter’s dire complications, turn to a mysterious midwife. What begins as harmless alternative therapies soon descends into life-threatening rituals. “It delves into the profound desires and fears of every aspiring parent,” says producer Daniel Dow of Dpplr. “It is a deeply personal narrative for the filmmakers, inspired by their own challenging journeys towards parenthood. Eva Maria Daniels, the Icelandic producer who most recently executive-produced the Sydney Sweeney project “Reality,” has died. She was 43.
Daniels’ friend, filmmaker Börkur Sigthorsson, posted on Facebook that she “passed away last week in London after a long battle with cancer.” She was diagnosed with Stage 3 cancer in 2020 in the middle of the pandemic but by 2021 was opening up about her experience and noting that she was now cancer-free and happy to spend more time with her young child.
“Eva died on the same terms as she lived. She played her cards close to her chest. She didn’t seek recognition when she had success. She didn’t seek pity when she suffered. I will miss her friendship greatly, but mostly I will miss seeing what she would have done next,” Sigthorsson wrote on Facebook.

Daniels died June 30 in London after a battle with cancer, her friend and publicist Jessie Cohen told The Hollywood Reporter. She was diagnosed in March 2020 with a type of Stage 3 cancer that had spread to her lymph nodes, but she declared herself cancer free in an interview with THR‘s Chris Gardner a year later.

This story about Riley Keough and “Daisy Jones & the Six” first appeared in the Limited Series/Movies issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
She walked out into the blue stage lights like she’d been there before, a gossamer cape swirling in the wind as she warily eyed the guitar player standing a few feet away. The wariness gradually melted, replaced by a gamut of emotions: playfulness, then a passion that felt driven and a joy that almost seemed desperate. She was flirtatious and seductive when sharing a microphone, but when her partner left the stage she grabbed hold of a love song and turned it into an instrument of salvation.
This all happened during the concert scenes in the final episode of “Daisy Jones & the Six,” and it added up to one thing: In the title role, Riley Keough was pretty much a rock star. In one way,...

Don Johnson is a personal hero of mine. One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed copy of his 1987 album, “Heartbeat”, which I have hanging on my living room wall. Being a child of the eighties, I always thought he was the coolest of the cool. As a youngster, I got into Miami Vice in a big way through re-runs, and I loved him in action flicks like 1989’s Dead-Bang, and 1991’s Best Movie You Never Saw fave Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man. Plus, there was Nash Bridges!

"True Detective" creator Nic Pizzolatto will make his feature film directorial debut with the drama "Easy's Waltz." Deadline confirmed the news, revealing the project will star Vince Vaughn alongside Michelle Monaghan, Simon Rex, and Al Pacino. Unsurprisingly, given his history of penning entire seasons of his crime drama anthology solo, Pizzolatto will also be on screenwriting duty for the film, which is described as a mix of "Swingers" and "A Star Is Born."
"Easy's Waltz" will reportedly focus on a "down-on-his-luck comedian-crooner" in modern-day Las Vegas, who navigates the city alongside "old-school Vegas personalities." Not much else is known about the project, which is being produced by Margot Hand, who also lent her producing talents to 2021's "Passing."
No release has been announced, and further details are yet to be revealed, but this will be the second time Pizzolatto and Vaughn have teamed up, following the latter's starring role in season 2 of "True Detective.

Jude Law (Captain Marvel) and Nicholas Hoult (Mad Max: Fury Road) have signed on to star in the true crime domestic terrorism thriller The Order, which is set to be directed by Justin Kurzel (Nitram) from a screenplay written by Zach Baylin, the Oscar-nominated writer of King Richard. Baylin’s script is based on the book The Silent Brotherhood by Kevin Flynn and Gary Gerhardt.

The Order has the following synopsis: In 1983, a series of increasingly violent bank robberies, counterfeiting operations and armored car heists frightened communities throughout the Pacific Northwest. Sundance film festival: thoroughbreds and Bad Education director Cory Finley makes an ambitious misstep with a jumbled comedy about controlling aliens
It’s become a depressingly familiar rite of passage for a director of vim and promise to stumble when they ambitiously decide to adapt a book that should have probably stayed on the shelf. Back in 2018, Blue Ruin and Green Room director Jeremy Saulnier came a cropper when he tried to wrangle William Giraldi’s unwieldy Hold the Dark to the screen. At Sundance in 2020, Dee Rees followed Pariah and Mudbound with a clunky, critically loathed attempt to turn Joan Didion’s The Last Thing He Wanted into a coherent film. And just last year Andrew Dominik and Noah Baumbach made their worst films to date with Blonde and White Noise respectively.

It's not that surprising that the man behind "True Detective" and its intricately plotted mysteries is a bit of a control freak. Nic Pizzolatto helped usher in a new era of prestige TV with "True Detective" season 1, aided immensely by career-best performances from Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey. Also helping to keep Pizzolatto's characteristically dense storytelling on the more lucid side was director Cary Fukunaga, who reportedly struggled with Pizzolatto. As the director claimed, the showrunner, "kept positioning himself as if he was my boss and I was like, 'But you're not my boss. We're partners. We collaborate.'"
When it came time for season 2, Pizzolatto wasn't having any more of that collaboration nonsense. He wrote the entire season (two episodes were co-written) and remained on set throughout production to keep a close eye on proceedings. As he told Indiewire: "In the first two seasons, if the cameras were rolling,...

The BBC One series "Luther" is one of the most brutally bleak detective shows ever made, but actor Andy Serkis was apparently shocked with just how dark the movie was going to be when he first read the script. Serkis is playing the film's villain, a millionaire serial killer who uses technology to blackmail his enemies and force others to do his bidding. GamesRadar released an image of Serkis from the upcoming film, along with some quotes from an interview with Total Film, and Serkis said he was genuinely taken aback by the depths of human wickedness within the script -- almost enough to not want to take part.
Serkis's reaction to screenplay for "Luther: The Fallen Sun" reminds me of when Patrick Stewart read the script for Jeremy Saulnier's punk-rock siege thriller "Green Room" and it made him feel "so unsafe." Stewart went on to give one of...

Bullitt isn’t the only late 1960s film getting a reimagining for the modern era. Dennis Hopper’s Easy Rider, a landmark film that helped to usher in the New Hollywood movement that would define 1970s moviemaking, is the latest to be targeted for reboot potential.
Variety reports that a reimagining of the 1969 film, which starred Hopper, Peter Fonda, and a young Jack Nicholson, is being developed. As for what road this remake will travel down, the model being looked at is how Creed reinvigorated the Rocky franchise and a “bold” writer-director team is currently being sought after.
The rights to the original Columbia Pictures project are in the hands of a number of companies and individuals, including Maurice Fadida’s Kodiak Pictures, Defiant Studios’ Eric B. Fleischman, and the Jean Boulle Group, all of whom are backing this new take.

If it's one thing all horror fans understand, it's that every month is a good month for watching scary movies. Sure, we often like to ramp up the on-screen scares come October, but the frights still continue throughout the rest of the year. And while the holiday season brings with it a lot to celebrate and be thankful for, there's also quite a lot that still goes bump in the night.
In honor of the various terrors that occur every December — i.e. every single trip you will take to a shopping mall in the coming weeks — here is a list of the best horror movies available to stream this month. Consider it your holiday gift guide for movies you can watch after the family has gone home and you are left to piece your sanity back together. The holidays may only come around once a year, but terror lasts forever.

Kristen Stewart is one of the best, most unpredictable performers of her generation. Her portrayal of Bella Swan in "The Twilight Saga" made her a worldwide movie star, and she used that cachet to make a series of artistically ambitious films from the non-mainstream likes of Olivier Assayas, Kelly Reichardt and Pablo Larrain (whose "Spencer" earned Stewart her first Academy Award nomination for Best Actress). Five years ago, she branched out and made her first short film, the captivatingly impressionistic "Come Swim," which premiered at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival. Her talent seems to know no bounds, so it's exciting to learn that she'll make her feature directing debut with "The Chronology of Water."

"True Detective" season 1 is a rare accomplishment, being a television series with one writer and one director for the entirety of its first season. The singular vision of director Cary Fukunaga and writer Nic Pizzolatto created an engaging first season of television that subsequent seasons of the anthology haven't been able to follow up. However, such quality came at a cost, particularly on the part of Fukunaga. The director, known for his script contributions to "It Chapter One" and Daniel Craig's final outing as James Bond in "No Time to Die," gave "True Detective" season 1 a tone and pacing that helped match the thought-provoking dialogue provided by Pizzolatto.
Telling the story of detectives Rustin Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) and Martin Hart (Woody Harrelson), "True Detective" season 1 was more about the stories of the two detectives than it was about the mystery at its center. The show lived well beyond its critically acclaimed first season,...

Exclusive: Netflix finally is due to get back up and running on action-thriller Rebel Ridge after an 11-month hiatus.
Filming is set to restart on April 25 in the U.S. after production came to a halt in June with the abrupt departure of star John Boyega.
The Star Wars actor left the movie mid-shoot citing “family reasons.” Speculation swirled online about Boyega’s dissatisfaction with the production, but that was denied by his reps and the streamer.

John Boyega has taken some fascinating swings in his post-“Star Wars” career. Last year, he earned heaps of acclaim for his role as London Metropolitan Police officer Leroy Logan in the “Red, White and Blue” entry in Steve McQueen’s “Small Axe.” He was set to star in the Netflix thriller from Jeremy Saulnier “Rebel Ridge,” and though he left that project earlier this summer, fans can still get a chance to see him in the upcoming “Naked Singularity,” in theaters on August 6 and on demand August 13. Check out the trailer below.
Here’s the official synopsis from Screen Media Films: “‘Naked Singularity’ tells the story of Casi (John Boyega), a promising young NYC public defender whose idealism is beginning to crack under the daily injustices of the very justice system he’s trying to make right.
