A crowd-pleasing film based upon director Tracie Laymon’s experience talking with a stranger online at a low point in her life, Bob Trevino Likes It is a moving story that proves good people do exist in this world. With two wonderful performances by Barbie Ferreira and John Leguizamo––playing two strangers who share the same last name but are otherwise unrelated––the film progresses into a moving yet somewhat predictable affair. And that’s okay. It’s also not just a work of cinematic comfort food, with Ferreira expressing an incredible amount of emotional vulnerability, humor, and at times a youthful naivety in a performance that’s a little more complex than initially meets the eye.
Ferreira plays 25-year-old Lily Trevino, the daughter of Robert (French Stewart), a recent retiree who fancies himself a player in his local trailer park retirement community. He’s a cheap jerk who complains about the cost of dating,...

Writer-director Tracie Laymon has a lot of Bobs in her life.
First, there was Bob Laymon, her father.
“In 2012, I was looking for my dad,” she says. “He would just feel disrespected for even the most minor infractions, and he’d disappear for a year or two and not talk to me. So I put his name into Facebook and saw this little tiny picture. I friended him and woke up to ‘Bob Laymon likes it.’ I was like, ‘My dad likes something of mine! We’re back! It’s gonna be okay.'”
It wasn’t okay yet. This was a second Bob Laymon.
“It was a stranger in Wichita, Kansas,” Laymon says, “who continued to be more fatherly to me than my dad ever was — he filled the void. He had such access to my heart because of his name. My dad never wrote me happy birthday, but...

The first time Lily (Barbie Ferreira) sits down with a new counselor in Bob Trevino Likes It, we hear only snippets of the backstory she lays out in rambling, rapid-fire detail. Even so, it’s evident it’s a dark one: “Despite what my father says, I’m pretty sure it was not all my fault,” she says of being abandoned by her mother at age four. And it’s made only more heartbreaking by the way she presents it — with the chipper, matter-of-fact cadence of a woman who’s been carrying the pain for so long she’s become totally inured to it.
As Lily wraps up her spiel with a smile, she’s startled to realize the counselor has burst into tears; in the end, Lily has to comfort her about how sad Lily’s own life is. But that counterintuitive mix of tones is Bob Trevino Likes It in a nutshell.

Paul Westhead is feeling the pressure of his feud with Magic Johnson in an exclusive sneak peak of Sunday’s new episode of HBO’s “Winning Time.”
In the episode, titled “The Hamburger Hamlet”, a final clash between Johnson (Quincy Isaiah) and the Lakers head coach (played by Jason Segel) causes Lakers owner Jerry Buss (John C. Reilly) to task Jerry West (Jason Clarke) with picking up the pieces. Meanwhile, as Honey (Ari Graynor) attempts a heart-to-heart with Jeanie (Hadley Robninson), Buss faces pushback from the press and his captain. Later, Pat Riley (Adrien Brody) faces his demons and takes control of his team.
The clip sees Westhead pay a visit to Buss’ office, where the former is told that the latter is in a meeting.
“With who?,” Westhead asks, to which Buss’ secretary replies, “I’m not at liberty to say.”
As Westhead turns to leave, another door swings open where Jerry West,...

“The Golden Bachelor” casting call attracted some incredible women. On Wednesday, ABC unveiled the 22 women who will be vying for Gerry Turner‘s heart on the inaugural season of its “Bachelor” spinoff series, and some remarkable women made the cut.
There’s a cageless shark diver, a triple master’s degree holder, a former NFL cheerleader, and a former Bachelor’s mom, among others. As for which lady will be able to snag Gerry’s heart, the widower — whose wife of more than four decades, Toni, died in 2017 — previously told Et what he’s looking for in a mate.
“I think the one thing I’m going to look for is that look in the eye. I’ve seen it before, and I know the feeling when it’s there,” he said. “If I see that, that’s going to be the person that I’m going to probably pursue above others.

The Golden Bachelor contestants have made their debut.
Twenty-two women will be vying for a final rose from Gerry Turner, the 71-year-old widower who will be leading the ABC franchise’s highly anticipated senior dating spinoff when it premieres Sept. 28.
The Golden Bachelor format will be similar to that of flagship shows The Bachelor and The Bachelorette, except that Turner will be dating from a group of eligible women in his age cohort. The looking-for-love contestants were revealed on Wednesday and they range from 60 to 75 years old. The group is one of “accomplished golden ladies” who “will take time away from their established home lives, friends and family in the quest to rediscover love,” said ABC.
Among the women — who hail from all over the country and are a mix of retirees and professionals ranging from educators to a wedding officiant and a pro-aging coach — is one familiar face: Patty James,...
