Emily Blunt seems staunchly opposed to algorithms making any decisions in Hollywood. Ahead of the release of her summer tentpole “The Fall Guy,” the Oscar nominee joined co-star Ryan Gosling for a Vanity Fair Italy cover story in which she expressed frustration over algorithm-driven decision making. Blunt pointed to Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” as the kind of gamble that an algorithm or data-crunching practices would probably advise not to make, given it’s a biopic with an R rating and a three-hour runtime that features no action scenes.
“Some new things frustrate me: algorithms, for example,” Blunt said. “I hate that fucking word, excuse the expletive! How can it be associated with art and content? How can we let it determine what will be successful and what will not?”
“Let me explain with an example,” she continued. “I was in a three-hour film about a physicist, which had the that...

Now and then: Nolan's Oppenheimer and Insomnia Photo: Universal Pictures; Warner Bros
Oppenheimer, Sky Cinema now, and Insomnia, Itvx, streaming now
We don't frequently include two films from the same director in the Stay-at-Home but, then again, we don't subscribe to arbitrary rules either and the opportunity to catch something old and something new (not to mention something borrowed) from Christopher Nolan's back catalogue seems too good to miss. First up you can now stream the Oscar-winning latest from the British director, which details the development of the atomic bomb via the life of Robert Oppenheimer. Whether the film needs to be quite as structurally convoluted is definitely debatable but Nolan does like that sort of thing and you can't argue with the beautifully recreated period detail and the magnetic performances from Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr and Emily Blunt, among others. From the opposite - and more formulaic - end of Nolan's career,...

Cillian Murphy is the favorite to win the Best Actor Oscar for his role in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer on Sunday Night. The actor spent almost six months researching and prepping to play the role of the Father of the Atomic Bomb, J. Robert Oppenheimer. It was not the first time the actor did extensive research for a role. One such research for a $34 million movie changed him from an agnostic to an atheist.

Ahead of the 2024 Oscars, the Nuclear Threat Initiative (Nti) launched its “Make Nukes History” campaign in Los Angeles, using the nominated film Oppenheimer to expand the conversation on nuclear threats.
As explained on the Nti’s official site, the campaign involves billboards, an art installation, street posters and an open letter signed by various stars, calling for the use of nuclear weapons to be ceased.
In a statement shared with the announcement of the campaign, Matthew Modine, who was part of Oppenheimer‘s cast, writes, “Every person should be educated about the incredible destructive power of nuclear weapons. Understanding the threat illuminates a necessary path toward their elimination.”
Modine adds, “Hundreds of thousands of Americans have been directly harmed by radioactive fallout from the hundreds of nuclear explosions conducted on U.S. soil. From the moment of the first atomic bomb test at Los Alamos, New Mexico, our entire planet has been at risk.

The Japanese film Godzilla Minus One seemed to be a surprise hit among fans and was lauded for its VFX and action sequences. The film received an Academy Award-nominated for Best Visual Effects, making it the first Godzilla film to be nominated for the prestigious award. Godzilla Minus One also earned $107 million at the box office against a $12 million budget.
The Godzilla franchise has long been regarded as a metaphor for the threat of nuclear warfare and Japan’s morbid history with the weapon. Another film criticizing nuclear warfare was Christopher Nolan’s epic war film Oppenheimer, which surprisingly did not show the Japanese perspective of the war. Godzilla Minus One director Takashi Yamazaki mentioned that someday he would like to counter Oppenheimer’s narrative with a film of his own.

Director Christopher Nolan is gearing up for his first Oscar win for 2023’s WWII biopic Oppenheimer. The film has had a dream run during awards season, with Nolan and his fellow nominees Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. winning big at the Golden Globe, BAFTA, and SAG awards. The film would be Nolan’s second Oscar nomination after Dunkirk.
While the director has a loyal fanbase that spans the globe, the success of Oppenheimer was reportedly a surprise for the makers. The filmmaker has often mentioned how grateful he was for the audience to have made a blockbuster out of a three-hour film with mostly just talking. Taking the film’s success as an example, director Denis Villeneuve reportedly defended his upcoming film Dune: Part Two’s long runtime.

Emily Blunt is laughing. Talk to the actor for any given amount of time — it could be six hours, might be six minutes — and you’ll hear her do this a lot. She’s a full-body laugher, not the snorting, shaking-fits kind but the pitching-about type, as if she was trying to remain steady on a ship that just hit rough waves. A lean-back laugher. Several times during a conversation on Zoom, the Oscar-nominated star will come close to inadvertently exiting the frame when she finds something extremely funny.

The biggest night for British film proved to be a major one for Christopher Nolan. After reigniting the summer box office alongside Barbie, his atomic bomb biopic Oppenheimer led the way at the BAFTAs 2024, earning seven awards on the night – including the most hotly-contested categories. As well as Best Film, a Directing win for Nolan himself, and Acting awards for Cillian Murphy (Leading) and Robert Downey Jr. (Supporting), it bagged the likes of Best Score for Ludwig Goransson, Editing, and Cinematography for Hoyte Van Hoytema.
Nolan called it “an incredible honour” to be recognised on home turf in the UK. One thing that rankles about some historical dramas is their tendency to indicate the story’s epoch using the broadest possible signifiers. Movies about the 1980s in particular often draw as much from the spirit of ’80s-themed house parties as they do from history. In contrast, Tim Mielant’s Small Things Like These fashions a believable and at times engrossing vision of the mid-’80s, even if its story could’ve benefited from similar nuance.
Adapted from the novel of the same name by Claire Keegan, the film takes place during the 1985 Christmas season in New Ross, Ireland. In this working-class town, not everything is “from” the ‘80s: People wear clothes that look like they’re from the ’60s, the kids watch ’70s cartoons like Danger Mouse, and some of the vehicles even seem as they’re from the ’40s. Christopher Nolan’s screenplay for “Oppenheimer” is dense, 180 pages, and a terrific read. Adapted from Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherman’s Pulitzer Prize-winning “American Prometheus,” the filmmaker found a conflicted hero in brilliant theoretical physicist Robert Oppenheimer, a Salieri antagonist in political operative Admiral Lewis Strauss, and a courtroom drama for each of them.
Nolan and I spoke over the phone about the writing of “Oppenheimer,” which is nominated for Adapted Screenplay. Right from the start, there is no doubt where we are. Narrow, gray streets in the dim daylight of winter, peat hills between cramped villages, a crow sitting on a church spire: this is western Ireland in the ’80s, when the Celtic Tiger was yet to roar and jobs were scarce, divorce was illegal, condoms available only on prescription and central heating unknown.
It is also the Ireland of the Magdalene laundries, businesses run jointly by Church and the Irish state where unwed mothers were consigned to repent of their sins, do hard labor for a living and ultimately deliver their babies for adoption. Academic research estimates that 35,000 women were forced into this service. Around 1,600 women and 6,000 babies are believed to have died behind the convents’ walls. Nobody — apparently — asked why. The last of these institutions closed only in 1996.

The Bafta and Oscar-nominated actor says he would like to reprise his role as the Birmingham gangster Thomas Shelby

Christopher Nolan "always wanted" to work with Robert Downey Jr. before casting him in 'Oppenheimer'.The director has admitted he was a longtime admirer of the actor before handing him a role in the atomic bomb blockbuster - which earned him a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nominations - and Nolan says he wanted Downey Jr. in the cast because of his "incredible generosity of spirit".During an appearance on 'The Late Show With Stephen Colbert', Nolan explained: "With anybody you work with, with actors … you’re looking for some kind of connection emotionally, empathetically."You’re looking for some kind of generosity. He [Downey Jr. ] has this incredible generosity of spirit. It means when he’s in a scene with other people he’s making sure they are all doing their best, that they are all able to bring their best to the table. Maga firebrand Josh Hawley is no stranger to political malfeasance — he’s the election-denying Missouri senator who famously raised a fist in support of the insurrectionists assembling on the morning of Jan. 6, then was caught on camera a few hours later desperately sprinting from those same rioters as they descended on the Capitol.
But now, shockingly, Hawley is apparently stooping even lower with a dirty tricks campaign aimed at an even more sacred American institution; he appears to be meddling in the Oscar race.
Hawley released a Jan. 25 open letter to the Academy demanding that Hollywood help people exposed to radiation during the Manhattan Project by “telling their stories” — a dig, perhaps, at Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, currently the front runner for Best Picture. “The Oppenheimer film tells a compelling story of these test programs,” his letter goes on. “But it does not tell the story of the Americans left...

Christopher Nolan is well known for his intense attention to detail, working on and researching his projects for years before they’re finally ready to go before cameras. His 2023 blockbuster Oppenheimer (remember to buy it on physical media folks) is no different; in fact, it may be his most meticulously constructed movie to date. Using the biography “American Prometheus” as his template, Nolan clearly went to great lengths to depict a crucial handful of years in the complicated life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, whom Nolan has said is the most important human who ever lived… for better or worse.
If you’ve seen the film, and based on its incredible $900 million worldwide box office haul, you have, you might’ve wondered just how close to reality Nolan’s film truly is. Well, you can stop wondering because we’re about to give you a quick history lesson and tell you what really happened to Oppenheimer.

Christopher Nolan has told me that composer Ludwig Göransson’s score for the Golden Globe-winning Oppenheimer is “part of the DNA of the project.”
The five-time Oscar-nominated filmmaker explains that music “isn’t something that we hastily add after we’ve shot the film.” It is, rather, an integral part of his movie-making process, “the secret sauce,” he adds.
Göransson and Nolan began discussing the music before the screenplay was completed “so that I can use Ludwig’s music even as I’m shooting,” he explains.
In fact, Göransson notes that he had created something like “two to three hours of music” before Nolan’s cameras rolled.
Ludwig Goransson
“It was hours and hours, and months and months of experimenting, and we started early,” he says. “I was able to write music based solely on conversations Chris and I had, and from reading the script at different stages of its evolution.

Robert Downey Jr. has taken the Golden Globe for best supporting actor in a motion picture drama for his portrayal of Lewis Strauss in Universal’s Oppenheimer. This was Downey Jr.’s fifth Golden Globe nomination and third win.
“Yeah, yeah, I took a Beta blocker so this is going to be a breeze,” a clearly exhuberant Downey Jr. began his acceptance speech tonight.” A sweeping story about the ethical dilemma of nuclear weapons grosses 1 billion dollars, does that track? No, unless and but because Universal went all in on Christopher Nolan, to direct Cillian Murphy with Emma Thomas producing with Emily [Blunt] and Florence [Pugh] and this cast and crew and helped them render a goddamn masterpiece.”

No, unless and but because Universal went all in on Christopher Nolan, to direct Cillian Murphy with Emma Thomas producing with Emily [Blunt] and Florence [Pugh] and this cast and crew and helped them render a goddamn masterpiece.”

Nobody would have thought that a three-hour movie about the father of the atomic bomb would be one of the highest-grossing movies of the year, giving pink dolls, plumber brothers and the Guardians’ farewell a literal run for their money. But that’s just what happened with Oppenheimer, which director Christopher Nolan sees as a positive omen for the future of cinema.
As Christopher Nolan told Empire, Oppenheimer defied the odds at the box office this year. “I’ve just made a three-hour film about Robert Oppenheimer which is R-rated and half in black-and-white – and it made a billion dollars. Of course I think films are doing great…The crazy thing is that it’s literally the most successful film I’ve ever made. I’ve been doing this for 20 years and in the United Kingdom it’s my highest-grossing film. So I feel great about the state of the movie business,...

Following The Film Stage’s collective top 50 films of 2023, as part of our year-end coverage, our contributors are sharing their personal top 10 lists.
Many of the most memorable moments of my life have revolved around cinema. (Let’s not debate whether that is a good thing.) And 2023 was no exception. There was a twentieth-anniversary screening of the mesmerizing Mulholland Drive at Buffalo’s North Park Theatre featuring a performance from the remarkable Rebekah Del Rio. That was a biggie, but many of my most indelible 2023 cinema memories include my children. In July, my wife and our two kiddos had a rare group cinema outing to Barbie on its opening day, and I have rarely seen my then-eight-year-old daughter more genuinely excited to dance the night away. A few weeks earlier my son was similarly pumped for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny—his first (and only) chance to see...

2023 has been a rollercoaster of a year for an industry hit by setbacks – but Oppenheimer director Christopher Nolan seems pretty chipper about the future of cinema.
Christopher Nolan seems more optimistic about the state of modern cinema than most.
And why shouldn’t he be? As he recently told Empire, “I’ve just made a three-hour film about Robert Oppenheimer which is R-rated and half in black-and-white – and it made a billion dollars. Of course I think films are doing great.”
“The crazy thing is that it’s literally the most successful film I’ve ever made.”
[Editor’s note: we’ve done some horribly rushed napkin-maths and he’s right – though Oppenheimer's $954m global box office is some $50m or so behind The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises, it also cost at least $80m less to make than either bat-flick.]

Amid our nostalgia-mad monoculture, in the age of legacy sequels and the franchise-ation of movies, it often seems like we're in some sort of endlessly repeating paroxysm of déjà vu. Hollywood is notorious for doubling down on anything even marginally successful, often to disastrous effect. Take a look at the current plight of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which has become so ubiquitous and tiresome that 2024 could be Kevin Feige's last chance to save it. Similarly, in the wake of the McU's dominance, studios have attempted their own version of a shared universe and mostly failed. "John Wick: Chapter 4" was an example of cinematic universe-building done right, but even Lionsgate struggled to expand that universe into prestige TV, with the ultimately pointless "The Continental" series.
Make no mistake, we're in for a continuing deluge of legacy sequels and IP fetishization, as studios scramble for some sort of consistency amid...

Christopher Nolan is looking back at his banner year in Hollywood thanks to Oppenheimer as well as the current state of the cinema landscape.
The summer box office saw a much-needed resurgence following the Covid-19 pandemic, which saw movie theaters shut down. But Nolan’s film and Greta Gerwig’s Barbie helped bring cinemagoers back in large numbers.
Oppenheimer has gone on to gross $952 million, which not only has the filmmaker thrilled but also happy for the future of movies in general.

As 2023 draws to a close, Christopher Nolan is feeling pretty good about the state of the movie business. That shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise considering “Oppenheimer” pulled in a remarkable $954 million at the box office this year, beating every superhero movie and several major Hollywood tentpoles, like “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.” Audiences turning out in droves for a three-hour, R-rated and incredibly dense biographical drama as if it were a major action movie blockbuster has Nolan quite optimistic about the future.

There was little precedent for :a[Oppenheimer]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/oppenheimer/' target='_blank' rel='noreferrer noopener'} taking over the box office in the way that it did this summer. Along with :a[Barbie]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/barbie/' target='_blank' rel='noreferrer noopener'}, it dominated blockbuster season – but given its three-hour runtime, its sprawling cast of historical characters, and its daunting, doomy story about J. Robert Oppenheimer creating the atomic bomb, there was no guarantee that Christopher Nolan’s latest would reach such a huge audience. But that’s the thing – a :a[Christopher Nolan movie]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/features/christopher-nolan-movies-ranked/' target='blank' rel='noreferrer noopener'} is an _event, and Oppenheimer quickly became a must-see, banking over $951 million worldwide to date. For a lengthy drama about the terror of possible nuclear apocalypse, that’s an astonishing haul.

“’Oppenheimer’ is a visual masterpiece. I felt like this movie was pushing the boundaries in so many different fields, so I wanted to see how we could do that with music as well,” shares Ludwig Göransson on his approach to scoring director Christopher Nolan’s epic film. Both creatives offer a behind-the-scenes look at how the explosive story of the Manhattan Project and its director J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) came together in a new video that Gold Derby is debuting exclusively that combines interviews, film footage, and clips of the composer in the studio. Watch the “Oppenheimer” exclusive featurette above.
Nolan confesses that he had “no preconceptions about the music for the film.” The only clue he gave the Oscar-winning composer of “Black Panther” about the “soundscape” for the movie was “basing the score on the violin.” For his part, the musician notes, “There’s so much in the performance of the violin.

Yes, Christopher Nolan wants you to buy the Blu-ray of “Oppenheimer.”
But the event at the Academy’s Linwood G. Dunn Theatre Monday night promoting the November 21 home video launch of the $951 million global hit — which no one in Hollywood predicted — also screened “The Story of Our Time: The Making of Oppenheimer,” a Blu-ray special feature, and added a stellar crafts panel for the press, guild, and Academy voters on hand.
Universal knows that craft nominations could add up for “Oppenheimer,” as they have for other Nolan movies like “Dunkirk” and “Inception,” and that these craft maestros would showcase their expertise and star power. At the reception afterwards, Nolan told IndieWire that he was surprised at how strong the making-of movie was, because he actively avoided having the crew on the set, finding them an unwelcome distraction.

‘Barbenheimer’ was completely unexpected, but the studio behind Barbie gladly leaned in, said Dana Nussbaum, EVP of worldwide marketing for Warner Bros. Pictures, calling the unusual double-feature frenzy one of a few unforseen and welcome twists while rolling out the Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster.

Florence Pugh has revealed Christopher Nolan apologised for the size of her role in 'Oppenheimer'.The director fully expected her to walk away from the role of Jean Tatlock, a Communist Party USA member, and Robert Oppenheimer's (Cillian Murphy) romantic interest. However, the 'Don't Worry Darling' star admitted she wouldn't have minded playing an extra in the filmmaker's epic biographical flick about the titular father of the atomic bomb.Speaking to MTV UK, Florence said: “I didn’t really know what was going on or what it was that was being made.“Except I knew that Chris really, really wanted me to know that it wasn’t a very big role, and he understands if I don’t want to come near it. It’s always interesting to learn the favourite movies of some of your favourite filmmakers; sometimes they’re exactly what you’d expect and other times… they’re not. While speaking on The Rich Eisen Show, Oppenheimer director Christopher Nolan was asked to name some of his favourite “remote drops,” meaning a movie you just have to watch when you stumble across it on television, and he responded with Talladega Nights: The Legend of Ricky Bobby.
“I mean, god, anything by [Stanley] Kubrick, you know? It’s a remote drop,” Christopher Nolan said. “And some of the great comedies too, I mean ‘Talladega Nights,’ I’m never gonna be able to switch that up.” When asked to confirm if Talladega Nights really was a Christopher Nolan remote drop movie, Nolan simply responded with a quote from the movie: “If you ain’t first, you’re last.“

As we approach another anniversary of August 9, those who participated in “the decision” are all but gone.
But the reminders are with us, thanks to a new book by Evan Thomas, “Road to Surrender,” the forward for which reads “To save lives, it was necessary to take lives — possibly hundreds of thousands of them.” And, of course, Christopher Nolan’s epic portrait of the man who was never allowed to forget, Robert Oppenheimer.
We can’t hide under our desks anymore, but we can view ten other works that scared the hell out of us.

As a little girl in 1959, I found my parents watching this black and white film on TV. Excited, I asked if it was the latest with Annette and Frankie Avalon. Uh, no. They allowed me to stay, and two hours later, I was shaken to the core.

Christopher Nolan might have been outdone at the box office by "Barbie" and her $1 billion, but the director deserves credit for bringing hordes to the multiplex to watch a drama in 2023. Nolan's adaptation of Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin's Pulitzer-winning J. Robert Oppenheimer biography "American Prometheus" has enraptured viewers with its sobering look at the titular physicist's development of the atomic bomb. And for the esteemed filmmaker, one of the most important elements, when it came to drawing people in, was putting audiences in the moments before the infamous 1945 Trinity Test, when the bomb was first tested.
Nolan has spoken about how compelling he found the fact that Oppenheimer and his colleagues couldn't be sure they wouldn't destroy the world the first time they hit the detonator. Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on how you look at it, Oppenheimer's chances of igniting the atmosphere were pretty much non-existent, which...

Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” has created a massive surge in public interest in the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer. But the atomic bomb inventor’s grandson wants to make sure the cultural phenomenon doesn’t obscure the facts.
In a new interview with Time, Charles Oppenheimer shared his thoughts about Nolan’s cinematic take on his grandfather’s life. While he praised the film as a whole, Charles took particular issue with a scene in which J. Robert Oppenheimer attempts to kill a professor with a cyanide-laced apple.
The story is featured in Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin’s biography “American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer,” on which Nolan based his screenplay. But Charles Oppenheimer disputed the story’s accuracy and complained about what he saw as the biographers’ failure to verify the claim.

Charles Oppenheimer — the grandson of the late J. Robert Oppenheimer, whom Christopher Nolan’s new film “Oppenheimer” is centred on — has revealed one scene in the historical drama that he wouldn’t have included.
The founding member of The Oppenheimer Project, 48, has been doing press to help promote the film — now playing in theatres — including an interview with Time magazine, published earlier this week, where he discussed the scene at hand.
“I was bracing myself for not feeling great about [the movie], even though I talked to Chris Nolan and was very impressed by him,” Charles told the publication. “When I talked to Chris, at one point he said something roughly like, ‘I know how to tell a story out of this subject. There are going to be parts that you have to dramatize a bit and parts that are changed. As family members, I think you’re going to like some parts and dislike some parts.

Despite what the loudest voices on social media might have you believe, the job of any biopic isn't necessarily to reenact history with complete accuracy -- that's what textbooks and documentaries are for, after all. Rather, it's much more satisfying when it's about storytellers finding the emotional, humanizing truth at the core of figures whom we'll never truly know or understand. That's never stopped anyone from pointing out such historical errors and exaggerations anyway, of course, but do those complaints become more meaningful when the direct descendants of real-world figures are the ones voicing such thoughts?
Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" is destined to land at or near the top of several "Best of" lists by the end of the year (check out Chris Evangelista's review for /Film here), but at least one member of J. Robert Oppenheimer's family has a certain misgiving...

As the newest Christopher Nolan drama Oppenheimer makes its big run this summer, audiences are seeing why the epic earned its three-hour run time with more being explored than initially thought, as it not only deals with the Manhattan Project, but it is also an intimate look into J. Robert Oppenheimer’s life. Many are praising Nolan for his work, especially an Oppenheimer biographer who claimed to be emotionally recovering long after watching the movie. With historical figures such as this getting the big screen treatment, the families of the subject usually chime in on the accuracy of their namesake.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, J. Robert Oppenheimer’s grandson, Charles Oppenheimer, had spoken with Time about the points of his life that the movie had gotten right versus what the movie had gotten wrong. Prior to viewing, Charles noted that Christopher Nolan warned him that there were scenes in...

J. Robert Oppenheimer’s grandson Charles Oppenheimer is revealing what scene from Christopher Nolan’s film he “definitely would have removed.”
During an interview with Time magazine published online Tuesday, Charles opened up about what he would have changed in Oppenheimer, which follows the story of his American scientist grandfather and his role in the development of the atomic bomb.
Although he noted that Nolan warned him that there were going to be parts in the movie “that you have to dramatize a bit and parts that are changed,” Charles would have preferred the scene where Cillian Murphy’s Oppenheimer tried to kill his professor by injecting cyanide into an apple not have been included in the film.
“The part I like the least is this poison apple reference,” he said, due to its historical inaccuracy. But Charles explained that he was previously not pleased with that section in the...
