Ms. Lauryn Hill teamed up with her son Yg Marley for a medley performance of “Ex-Factor,” “Survival,” and “Praise Jah in the Moonlight” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday night. Watch video of the performance, which coincide with Fallon’s 10th anniversary as host of The Tonight Show, below.
Last December, Yg shared his first single, “Praise Jah in the Moonlight,” co-written with his mother and sampling his paternal grandfather, reggae legend Bob Marley. Now, the song has over 250 million streams on Spotify alone, and earned a spot on the Billboard Hot 100, being the first reggae song to do so in seven years. Ahead of his appearance on Fallon, he shared “Survival” as his latest single.

Kevin Macdonald's High & Low – John Galliano is now showing exclusively on Mubi in many countries.High & Low – John Galliano. What are the limits of forgiveness? Is making a documentary about a disgraced public figure, in which that remorseful person is allowed to try to explain their actions, inherently an act of damage-control propaganda? Or can it be a way of letting them tighten their own noose? Since its premiere at Telluride last September, Kevin Macdonald’s High & Low – John Galliano (2023) has fueled such heated conversations. Leaving many of its inquiries open-ended, this documentary is about neither complete condemnation nor exoneration. Instead, Macdonald tries to make sense of the enigma at his film’s center: a man who does not deny committing a hate crime over a decade ago, but who still claims to have no memory of the events or how he got there.Widely admired for his audacious style and designs,...

In a busy weekend at the box office, “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” the Sydney Sweeney horror vehicle “Immaculate,” IFC’s “Late Night with the Devil,” and two animated rereleases (“Luca” and recent Oscar winner “The Boy and the Heron“) will compete for the top spots. Meanwhile, a recent box-office smash is hitting digital platforms.
The contender to watch this week: “Bob Marley: One Love“
Reinaldo Marcus Green‘s biopic about the pioneering reggae singer is still riding its theatrical wave ($170 million worldwide and counting), but “Bob Marley: One Love” is also available to purchase or rent on VOD. Kingsley Ben-Adir shed his Kenergy to play Marley, icon of dorm-room posters and pacifistic chill-out vibes, opposite a supporting cast that includes Lashana Lynch, Tosin Cole, “Happy Valley” breakout James Norton, and Michael Gandolfini. “One Love” is a fairly rote retelling enhanced by its subject’s music, but even the weakest biopic tendencies have a groovy appeal.

The early weekend box office numbers are in, and it looks like Dune: Part Two wasn’t quite able to take the number one spot from Kung Fu Panda 4 after all. It was very close, with the animated sequel grossing $30 million to Dune’s $29.1 million. It’s so close that I’m not quite willing to admit my prediction that Dune 2 would top Panda was wrong, as Denis Villeneuve’s sequel has been overperforming at Sunday matinees the last few weeks. That said, even if it doesn’t top Panda, it still had a great weekend, with it only dropping a modest 37% in its third week. It also passed the double-century mark, with its final gross at $205 million. Will it cross $300 million? It’s possible, although it will face heavy competition over the next two weeks with Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire and Godzilla x Kong.

This is already shaping up to be an interesting year for Best New Artist at the Grammys. The category might lack a clear frontrunner so far, as it is early in the year, but we do have some serious contenders who might pick up more steam closer to voting time this fall. Plus, an open field might make it even more interesting, unlike years where the winner was rather obvious like when Olivia Rodrigo and Billie Eilish prevailed.

Ziggy Marley spoke about the disparate box office success and lukewarm critical reviews of the Bob Marley: One Love biopic in an interview on Thursday, likening the project to the critical consensus around his late father’s legendary album Exodus.
“The reviews of my father’s Exodus album … they bashed the album that became the album of the century,” Marley told Variety. “It’s not what they missed, but what they were looking for. They were looking for a different story. Our story’s about this man inside himself and his heart.

Before “Bob Marley: One Love” hit theaters on Valentine’s Day, the musical biopic about the Reggae legend was expected to sing its way to No. 1 on the charts.
But box office projections indicated the Paramount movie — which chronicles Marley’s (Kingsley Ben-Adir) rise to fame in the mid-1970s and complex relationship with his wife Rita Marley (Lashana Lynch) up until he died in 1981 — would start slow. It looked like it would collect $30 million and $35 million during the six days between Valentine’s Day on Wednesday and Presidents’ Day on Monday.
Instead, “One Love” smashed those expectations, earning $52 million during the extended holiday stretch.
It remained victorious in its sophomore outing (despite the presence of three new releases), raising its domestic total to $71 million. Maverick film making as shown in the work of Norman J. Warren, the brilliant burned-out Michael Reeves and others is hard to come by. The French based an entire now-classic group of films known as The New Wave of the sixties. Scripts were often not complete, or bare ideas, ad hoc sets, lack of money, filming on the run with camera angles, cut and in some cases non-professional actors. This can yield some fascinating results on screen giving new talent in from and before the camera a chance to shine. It is unfair to compare a film like Gav Chuckie Steele’s The Shadow of Death with something iconic nor will I do that, yet the film is about telling a story making this appear to be ‘slapped together.’
This film tries very hard to tell not one but two stories that are only one story leading up to the...

On a warm evening last month, inside a cluster of nondescript office spaces south of Miami, a rehearsal studio with a giant lion’s head painted in red, green, and gold on the concrete-block wall hums with activity. Long after the businesses surrounding them have shut down for the day, Stephen “Ragga” Marley and Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley are putting their band through its paces, tuning up for the Traffic Jam tour, which will be crisscrossing the U.S. and Canada through Mar. 30.

Paramount Global’s earnings in the fourth quarter edged Wall Street forecasts, but a double-digit slide in advertising dragged down total revenue by 6%.
Revenue came in at $7.6 billion, while earnings totaled 4 cents a share. Analysts had expected a loss of 1 cent per share, but revenue of $7.84 billion.
Linear TV advertising, which faced tough comparisons with the midterm-election-boosted 2022 frame, declined 15% to $2.28 billion. The dual strikes of 2023 also affected the pipeline at CBS and other networks, further squeezing ad sales.

The company said it is forecasting that its domestic streaming business will turn profitable by 2025. It also said 2022 was the peak of streaming losses, confirming management commentary in recent months. Days after Paramount’s Bob Marley: One Love overperformed in its opening weekend at the box office, Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman stole a bit of the spotlight Feb. 20 in unveiling not one but four intersecting feature films from Sam Mendes about The Beatles, each focusing on one member of the Fab Four: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr.
“You have to match the boldness of the idea with a bold release strategy,” Rothman tells The Hollywood Reporter about the project that earned the Oscar-winning director a coveted signoff from the group’s selective label Apple Corps. “There hasn’t been an enterprise like this before, and you can’t think about it in traditional releasing terms.”

Randy Spendlove, president of worldwide music and publishing at Paramount Pictures, is no stranger to musical biopics. His roster includes “Dreamgirls” and “Rocketman.” When it came time to bring reggae icon Bob Marley’s story to the big screen, his challenge remained the same as always: “How do you tell the story about a legendary figure? How do you accomplish it? And how do we make sure we utilize Bob?”
Early meetings took place during the pandemic with Marley’s sons Ziggy and Stephen as well as director Reinaldo Marcus Green over Zoom. The answer would be in authentically preserving Bob Marley’s live recordings and enhancing them – with actor Kingsley Ben-Adir’s vocals layered in.
However, the first complication the team needed to overcome was clearing the music rights.

"Bob Marley: One Love", the new live-action biographical drama feature, directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green, based on the life of reggae singer/songwriter 'Bob Marley', from his rise to fame up until his death, has so far grossed ‘domestic’ $71,188,696 and ‘international’ $49,400,000 for a ‘worldwide’ box office total of $120,588,696 after 11 days in theatrical release:

"His contributions to music increased the visibility of Jamaican music worldwide, and made him a global figure in popular culture.
"Over the course of his career, Marley became known as a 'Rastafari' icon, and he infused his music with a sense of spirituality.

The best thing that can be said about this treading-water weekend box office is that it would have been far worse without two niche audience films. And it is the last in February, with a much better March ahead.
“Bob Marley: One Love” (Paramount) repeats as number one with a respectable $13.5 million second weekend gross. It remains a possibility to reach a domestic $100 million, though this could be close. It fell 53 percent, not bad, but that’s compared to a first weekend when it already had a first two-day total of nearly $18 million before then.
That led a weekend coming to around $60 million total gross. Let’s be honest: That’s pathetic. “Marley” is doing fine, and the Manga “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba — To the Hashira Training” (Sony) #2/ $11.6 million and the faith-based adjacent drama “Ordinary Angels” (Lionsgate) #3/$6.5 million were credible performers versus anticipated results and investment. But the...

Hollywood’s latest music biopic, Bob Marley: One Love, continues to jam at the global box office, where it crossed the $100 million mark on Friday, including $61.4 million domestically and $39.7 million overseas after only 10 days in theaters.
The Paramount movie easily stayed atop this weekend’s domestic box office chart with an estimated $13.5 million from 3,597 locations, pushing its domestic tally to $72.2 million. Marley’s star also continues to shine brightly overseas, where it has amassed $49.4 million for global cume of $120.6 million.
One Love first starting making headlines last week, when it snagged a six-day launch of $51.1 million over the Valentine’s Day-Presidents Day corridor, one of the best openings ever for a music biopic (Straight Outta Compton remains top of the list), and remained well ahead of the dismal $26 million debut of Sony’s doomed Madame Web.

Paramount’s “Bob Marley: One Love” is feeling more than alright at the global box office. The musical biopic has generated $101.1 million worldwide after only 10 days in theaters, including $61.4 million in North America and $39.7 million from 59 international territories.
“One Love” retained the top spot on domestic charts in its second weekend of release, grossing $3.7 million on Friday. Internationally, the film added $3.3 million on Thursday and expanded into eight new markets this weekend.
“Bob Marley: One Love,” which opened on Valentine’s Day on Feb. 14, beat expectations in its box office debut with $28.6 million over the traditional weekend and $52 million during the six-day holiday stretch. Although the biopic landed mediocre reviews (and holds a 42% average from critics on Rotten Tomatoes), it earned an “A” CinemaScore from early audiences. “One Love” cost $70 million to produce.

The early weekend numbers are starting to roll in, and it’s good news for Bob Marley: One Love, with the audience-friendly biopic crossing an important milestone worldwide. Indeed, the film has now crossed the century mark, making $101 million worldwide. By the end of the weekend, Bob Marley: One Love should cross $70 million domestically, with a $13.8 million weekend (according to Deadline’s numbers).
Meanwhile, in second place is the latest instalment of the ever-popular Demon Slayer anime saga, with To the Hashira Training on track to crack $10 million for the weekend, which is just about $500k more than I predicted in my box office forecast. The faith-based Ordinary Angels is third, with a softer-than-expected $6.5 million predicted, despite an A+ CinemaScore. That said, I expect this Hilary Swank/ Alan Ritchson movie to have tremendous legs.

Peter Bart: In A Buzz-Less Market, Smart New Movies Must Overcome Critics’ Disdain & Audience Torpor
“Uninspired.” “Never catches fire.” “Non-memorable.”
I was sifting through reviews last weekend as the first step in my mission to re-discover the habit of moviegoing. With Barbenheimer finally behind us, I decided to see three new movies on successive days – yes, buying tickets and going to theaters.
But first come the critics: Their reviews, I assumed, would be tepid (excerpts above.) Box office results over the Presidents Day weekend were the lowest in 23 years, down 17% from a year ago — not a good portent. If there are some promising new movies out there, why are they hitting the wall?
Here’s a clue: Remember wide openings and buzz? Well, welcome to the new age of nonbuzz – new releases are greeted by the sounds of silence.
I decided to be resolute, anyway. I’m buying tickets.
Spoiler alert: I thoroughly enjoyed my filmgoing adventure. But there seems to be a...

Paramount Pictures didn’t have a bad 2023 but had put a lot of hopes on the latest in the Mission: Impossible franchise to push them towards a great year. After Tom Cruise soared with Top Gun: Maverick, they had hoped fans would flock to theaters once again to see him in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning: Part One. Off that’s a long title. It underperformed, so the next film will get a new name. What can fans look forward to on Paramount’s 2024 release schedule?

Paramount received the best Valentine’s Day gift any studio could hope for when Bob Marley: One Love, the biopic about the legendary Jamaican musician, set a new midweek record for the holiday when jamming to $14 million and besting the $11.5 million grossed by The Vow in 2012.
But Valentine’s Day turned out to be only a warm-up act as the film transformed into an all-audience box office sensation in another win for the music biopic boom sweeping Hollywood. Iconic music artists — of which there is no shortage — are providing studios with much-needed IP as tried and true genres, namely superhero movies, lose their singing powers. Paramount’s Bob Marley: One Love delivered a huge $50 million-plus domestic opening over the six-day Valentine’s Day-Presidents Day corridor, enough to crush Madame Web‘s $26.2 million start, a record worst for Sony’s superhero adventures.
Monday estimates show One Love raking in $52 million for the six days domestically, up from Sunday’s estimate of $51 million. That includes $34.1 million for the four-day Presidents Day weekend and a record $14 million on Valentine’s Day (rival studios say the decision to go out on sweetheart’s day was a smart choice in building momentum). The movie’s weekend debut is on par with the starts of such musical biopics as Rocketman or Elvis, and did almost double the business it was tracking to do. (Grosses for all films could shift again when final weekend numbers are tallied following the Monday holiday.)

Update: The official five-day estimates from studios (via Comscore) are in, with Bob Marley: One Love ending the President’s Day holiday weekend with over $52 million at the domestic box office, much higher than was estimated yesterday. Meanwhile, Madame Web is projected to add $2.6 million to its haul today, meaning it’ll end President’s Day with an estimated $26 million cume, which is exactly half of what the Marley biopic made. Expect lots of Madame Web post-mortem reports in the coming weeks, with it a clear box office misfire for Sony.

Monday Am: No surprise as Paramount’s Bob Marley: One Love continues to overperform now at $52M over 6-days after a better than expected Sunday of $9.45M (to originally expected $8.55M).
Monday is looking to ring in $5.5M. Current 3-day is $28.6M, 4-day is $34.1M. Some falsely guessed that coming off a record Valentine’s Day of $14M that Bob Marley: One Love would be front-loaded, ala The Color Purple which posted $18.1M on its opening Christmas Day (granted that had previews rolled into it). However, Bob Marley has a bigger appeal than that feature take of the Broadway musical; for in six days, the reggae legend biopic has already made 86% of what Color Purple finaled at ($60.5M). Overall, a great start for what will be a piece of counterprogramming as we approach Dune: Part Two on March 1.

What keeps writing about the box office fun and interesting for me is that there are always unexpected surprises. This Presidents Day weekend, what could have been a close race between two very different movies went in a completely different direction than I was expecting, with one of those movies absolutely demolishing the other. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Paramount’s biopic “Bob Marley: One Love,” starring Kingsley Ben-Adir and Lashana Lynch, opened in 3,539 theaters on Valentine’s Day to mixed-to-negative reviews, but it ended up with an astounding $14 million opening day, building on word-of-mouth and a fantastic “A” CinemaScore to achieve an estimated three-day weekend of $27.7 million, $33.2 million when you include Monday, which brings the film to a whopping $51 million in its first six days. That makes it unquestionably the best showing for a 2024 release after many months of disappointing results. With that kind of haul,...

Updated: Paramount’s musical biopic “Bob Marley: One Love” ruled in its box office debut, beating expectations with $28.6 million over the traditional weekend and $52 million during the six-day holiday stretch.
It was initially projected to generate $30 million to $35 million between Valentine’s Day on Wednesday and Presidents’ Day on Monday. The film came in slightly above Sunday’s domestic estimates of $27.7 million for the three days and $51 million for the six. It experienced an uptick because audiences dug “One Love,” which landed an encouraging “A” CinemaScore from moviegoers. Critics weren’t as fond of the by-the-numbers retelling of Marley’s life and music career as evidenced by the film’s 43% rotten average on Rotten Tomatoes. Reinaldo Marcus Green (“King Richard”) directed and co-wrote the PG-13 “Bob Marley: One Love,” starring Kingsley Ben-Adir as the iconic reggae singer and Lashana Lynch as his wife Rita.

Kinglsey Ben-Adir as “Bob Marley” in Bob Marley: One Love from Paramount Pictures. Photo Credit: Chiabella James Most people are familiar with the name Bob Marley and some of the man’s music, but in the time since the reggae icon’s death, some of the other aspects of his life have been largely forgotten. The new biopic, Bob Marley: One Love, focuses a lot of its energy on those lesser-known stories about the star. And, as the film’s star, Kingsley Ben-Adir, said a lot of those stories are quite personal. In preparing for the role, he revealed, he spoke extensively with the Marley family, who taught him more than he’d ever expected to know about the man he’d be playing. There's music in the air. Following the mammoth success of "Bohemian Rhapsody," which grossed $910.8 million at the box office following its release in 2018, studios rushed to get the ball rolling on other music biopics, and it's an investment that has mostly paid off. The latest success story is "Bob Marley: One Love," directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green ("King Richard") and starring Kingsley Ben-Adir (a.k.a. the Ken who brought his drumkit to the beach), which is continuing to dominate the six-day holiday frame after beating "Madame Web" to the No. 1 spot by a huge margin on Valentine's Day. Of particular note is its success in Marley's home nation of Jamaica, where "One Love" has scored the biggest box office opening day of all time.
By the end of Friday, its third day of release, the domestic box office total for "Bob Marley: One Love" stood at $25.3 million (per...

Paramount’s “Bob Marley: One Love” continued its run as box office leader through the specialized six-day holiday frame, adding $7.4 million on Friday from 3,539 locations to bump its domestic tally to $25.3 million. The biopic about the reggae legend could even double the six-day haul of Sony’s new superhero film “Madame Web,” which earned $4.3 million from 4,013 theaters on Friday. North American haul for the Marvel Comics adaptation currently stands at $12.5 million.
Both features opened on Valentine’s Day and are hoping to carry momentum through the Presidents’ Day holiday. “One Love” asserted itself out of the gate with an impressive $14 million on Wednesday, boosted by a handful of premium large-format auditoriums (“Madame Web” has the majority though). Though the Reinaldo Marcus Green-directed drama landed mediocre reviews, it resonated with early audiences, nabbing an “A” grade from surveyor Cinema Score. Paramount raised some eyebrows when it punted the film from...
