A preoccupation with mass murderers and the people they kill is nothing new for pop culture. Audiences have always been enraptured by violent true crime stories. Still, with the launch of Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story on Netflix this year, it feels like a new era of unrepentant bloody rubbernecking began.
Dahmer (we’ll drop the rest of the tortuous title for now) was a mind-blowing true crime hit for Netflix. The 10-episode series that chronicled the saga of the Milwaukee Cannibal Jeffrey Dahmer broke all sorts of record for Netflix en route to becoming its second most popular season of English language television yet (per Netflix itself). The streamer also boasts that the Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan-created, Evan Peters-starring series is on track to reach 1 billion hours of viewings in the coming weeks. So yeah…it was a big deal.

Either the nation’s most prolific serial killer was burying dozens of bodies on his property for decades undetected, or police are on a wild goose chase. Either way, the case has captured the minds of true crime TikTok — and the people want answers.
In the southwestern corner of Iowa, authorities are investigating claims made by a woman who says her father murdered as many as 70 women over several decades and buried them on their family’s property. Lucy Studey, 53, has told police that her late father, Donald Dean Studey,...

After 44 years, a woman known only as Escatawpa Jane Doe has been identified as Clara Birdlong of Leflore County, Mississippi, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department announced Tuesday. Investigators believe she was murdered by Samuel Little, the so-called “most prolific serial killer” in U.S. history, who died in 2020.
Two days after Christmas 1977, hunters came upon skeletal remains in a construction area in Escatawpa, Mississippi, and unincorporated area in Jackson County, according to the sheriff’s statement. A medical examination identified them as belonging to a small Black woman who may have worn a wig,...

A few years ago, before director-producer Joe Berlinger embarked upon making a docu series and narrative feature about Ted Bundy, he asked his daughters what they knew about the serial killer. Both were college-aged and “the prototypical Bundy victim,” he says, and neither one of them knew who Bundy was, let alone the extent of his crimes.
Although he was already seeing pushback on such projects, with many wondering why serial killers should get such large platforms, Berlinger felt it was important to make “people aware that this stuff really happens,” he says. “You can’t remind people enough that there are dark forces out there that one needs to guard against.”
That was part of the motivation for Berlinger doing the 2019 Netflix docu-series “Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes” and 2019 scripted feature film “Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile” starring Zac Efron as Bundy.

The new Starz documentary series Confronting a Serial Killer is captivating, immersive and infuriating. One of the first things we learn is how victims are parsed through the criminal justice system. On the scale of homicide priorities, “pretty white college students are the most dead, black hookers are the least dead.”
Because it tells a story about an under-represented and largely dismissed cross-section of the community, Confronting a Serial Killer focuses on the victims. Even the journalist spearheading the investigation is a survivor. Putting a human face and voice to statistics is a slowly growing trend in true crime coverage. It was recently done in Peacock Originals’ John Wayne Gacy: Devil in Disguise. But the Killer Clown is one of the most recognizable names in the history of homicide. While Samuel Little may have racked up a higher body count, his is a lesser-known name.
Little extinguished 93 lives over four decades.

A five-episode docuseries about the unprecedented relationship between author and journalist Jillian Lauren and the most prolific serial killer in American history, Sam Little, will bow on Starz this spring after a premiere at the SXSW Film Festival.
The story will detail Lauren’s race against time to identify Little’s victims. The series will be executive produced and directed by Oscar-nominated and Emmy-winning filmmaker Joe Berlinger with Po Kutchins serving as showrunner and executive producer.
Little recently died in prison. He is estimated to have killed at least 93 victims in his decades-long crime spree. The incidents only came to light after he was convicted of killing three Los Angeles women, and began to talk to investigators about his other crimes.

Samuel Little, whom the FBI says was the most prolific serial killer in U.S. history, died in prison Wednesday at age 80.
Little, who was finally caught after being convicted of the deaths of three Los Angeles women in the late 1980s, was serving three consecutive life-without-parole sentences, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said in its announcement of his death.
An official cause of death will be determined by the Los Angeles County medical examiner’s office.
Little was the subject of the Netflix documentary Catching A Serial Killer: Sam Little, which bowed this year on the streamer.
A career criminal, Little was not incarcerated for great lengths of time during his 40-years-long career, during which he kept on the move across the nation. Finally, in 2018, he confessed to killing 93 women nationwide from the 1970s through 2005. The FBI said that he knew details that only the killer would know,...

Little had confessed to strangling 93 people, nearly all women, in total across the United States between 1970 and 2005. He had been convicted of at least eight murders, some of which were solved using DNA analysis, The New...
