MGM TV head Mark Burnett — the prolific producer behind reality show staples such as “The Apprentice,” “Shark Tank,” and “Survivor” — is teaming with CNBC for a new unscripted prime-time series aimed at anyone who dreams of owning their own business.
“Business Hunters,” set to debut this fall, features aspiring entrepreneurs who leave the comfort and safety of their day jobs to take a chance on themselves by buying a business. The MGM series arrives as American employers have seen unprecedented resignation levels throughout the pandemic as workers wrestle back the power from their bosses.
“I love this format. I’ve lived it! The idea of betting on yourself is the American dream,” said Burnett, who serves as chairman of worldwide television at MGM. “This will be unlike any show I’ve ever done in the business space, because for the first time, the buyers are everyday people, just like the viewer at home.

Exclusive: CNBC, which has long aired daily Shark Tank episodes in primetime, has greenlit a new variation on the entrepreneurial mainstay called Business Hunters.
The new series, which focuses on everyday people deciding to take a risk and buy business as a departure from their 9-to-5 job, is from the same duo behind Shark Tank, MGM Television and Mark Burnett. (Sony Pictures Television is also a producer of Shark Tank.)
The show will see entrepreneur, CEO and host Matt Higgins and business broker and entrepreneur Mayumi Muller guide budding small business owners as they choose among potential businesses for sale, sometimes putting their life savings on the line.

Season 5 of Mark Burnett’s boxing competition show “The Contender” is hoping to deliver a knockout punch when it premieres on Epix Friday night.
While much has changed in both the worlds of reality TV and professional boxing in the nine-plus years since the fourth season finale aired, the essence of the series has stayed the same, host Andre Ward told TheWrap.
“I think that it would be blasphemous for me to say that it [Season 5] is better” than the first four seasons, Ward said. “I just want people to view it, make their assessments and have their own judgment.”

Former champion Andre “Son of God” Ward — who retired last year with an undefeated record — is set to host The Contender, Mark Burnett’s revived reality series that will bow on Epix later this year. Legendary trainers Freddie Roach and Naazim Richardson will serve as trainers on the series, which launched multiple boxers into contention for world titles during its original 2005-09 run.
Burnett is producing the 12-episode series along with his longtime executive producer Eric Van Wagenen. MGM Television and Paramount Television are producing, with filming set to begin this spring in Los Angeles.
Roach and Richardson each will oversee a team of eight fighters, pushing their fighting skills, strength and endurance to the limit in preparation for elimination competitions. They also will act as the fighters’ mentor, helping them to navigate their everyday life as the competitors live and train together and fight each other in the ring.

Lucha Underground is wrapping up their first season with their final shows airing in August and there is some uncertainty if they will get renewed for a follow-up on the El Rey Network.
While no official announcements have been made, Lu’s Executive Producer and showrunner Eric Van Wagenen appeared on Steve Austin’s podcast to say that El Rey wants Lu back for a 40 episode second season, but they have to find the funding for it.
Van Wagenen said that Lucha Underground wants to maintain its high quality of production, which would require more funding than what El Rey is currently willing to provide. He noted that there’s an effort from El Rey, producer Mark Burnett’s company and Lu’s investors to find additional money to help fund the second season of the show.
