On August 10, after more than a four-year hiatus, Prime India’s “Made in Heaven” returned for a second season. Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti’s series earned critical acclaim and a loyal audience after its debut, praised for authentic portrayals of the Indian elite, class struggles, patriarchy, and queerness. In the series, Sobhita Dhulipala and Arjun Mathur star as Tara and Karan, best friends and business partners running a wedding planning agency called Made in Heaven. Each episode focuses on a different wedding, couple, and behind-the-scenes drama mitigated by the Made in Heaven staff while navigating their own problems.
Season 2 brought back the winsome cast and sharp direction to tackle a new crop of extravagant (and fictitious) weddings, all within the real-life context of colorism, polygamy, abuse, and more. Episode 5, “The Heart Skipped a Beat,” deals with an inter-caste marriage, a prospect which initially excited author and activist Yashica Dutt.

OpinionOnce upon a time, toxic love was extensively romanticised on screen. But today, with such narratives under scrutiny, there have been attempts to address the intricacies of toxic relationships.During an interaction for an interview, scriptwriter Sanjay (one half of the Sanjay-Bobby duo) spoke about how liberating it is to no longer see heroes slapping heroines in Malayalam cinema. There was a time when one ‘tight slap’ was mandatory in most films (especially family dramas) to ‘tame’ the heroine so that she would go back to complete the patriarchal happy family picture. But with the political correctness lens firmly fastened on films by social media, writers and filmmakers are thinking twice before sitting complacently on their conditioned belief systems. Once upon a time, love was extensively romanticised and lopsided on screen. There were many instances of toxic love being normalised, as well as celebrated, without question. AnalysisWith Netflix’s ‘The Romantics’ starting conversations around the Yash Chopra reign in Bollywood, we revisit a few of his popular films to see how he depicted women on screen.Sridevi in ChandniRohit’s first glimpse of Chandni is at a friend’s wedding. As the enchanting woman, dressed in a resplendent red lehenga, dances stirringly to ‘Mere Haathon Mein’ — a slyly worded song that illustrates the anxiety of a bride on a wedding night, he is mesmerised. He throws a dupatta around him, sneaks into the all-women gathering, and takes several pictures of her. And in the very next scene, he pulls her towards him and proposes to her in no uncertain terms. Chandni (a charming Sridevi) blushes, and the love story begins. In Netflix’s The Romantics, a series that chronicles the evolution of the Yash Raj legacy, actors and critics rave about how Chandni (1989) opened the doors for romance in Hindi cinema.
