The Winery Dogs, the supergroup featuring drummer Mike Portnoy, singer-guitarist Richie Kotzen, and bassist Billy Sheehan, released their latest album III back in February. Now, the trio are premiering the video for the album track “Stars” exclusively via Heavy Consequence.
The six-minute cut lies at the heart of III, anchoring the tracklist with a lengthy slab of psyched-up hard rock. Kotzen’s vocals are in peak flight, with Sheehan laying down a tight groove over Portnoy’s uptempo drumming. The longer arrangement also allows the band to indulge in its affinity for improvisation.
The performance video (watch below) keeps the spotlight purely on the musicianship, giving viewers a front-row seat to The Winery Dogs’ combined skill. The homespun approach of shooting the video in Kotzen’s driveway — behind a serene mountain backdrop — provides a charming touch.

Legendary metal drummer Mike Portnoy is saying goodbye to Twitter, citing the social media platform’s new policy that allows anyone to buy a blue check verification for $8 a month.
Twitter recently started stripping verified accounts of their blue check marks for not paying the $8 monthly fee, which was instituted by the company’s new owner Elon Musk. While the money is no issue for Portnoy, the drummer feels the new verification process is compromised.
The ex-Dream Theater stickman, who is currently involved in several music projects — including The Winery Dogs, Metal Allegiance, Flying Colors, and Sons of Apollo, among others — had been one of the more active metal musicians on Twitter up until his stance, so he’s giving up a major communication tool by exiting the platform. For the metal veteran, it’s a matter of principle.

Iron Maiden guitarist Adrian Smith has joined forces with guitarist Richie Kotzen, best known for stints in Poison and Mr. Big, for a bluesy, hard-rock collaboration they’ve dubbed Smith/Kotzen. The artists will drop a self-titled release on March 26th, and they’re previewing it with “Taking My Chances,” which shows off how their sensibilities blend as Smith’s bluesy licks complement Kotzen’s shredding and husky vocals.
