Double trouble here! Tribeca premiered the documentary Now: In the Wings on a World Stage, which follows the cast of Richard III as they debut their performance worldwide. After the film’s premiere, the cast of the play and film joined Charlie Rose onstage for an exclusive Q&A about the making of the film as well as the challenges they faced as part of the play.
Richard III stared Kevin Spacey as the namesake as well as multiple actors who were in attendance at the film’s premiere. Some include Maureen Anderman, who played the Duchess of York, Nathan Darrow, who played Lord Grey/Henry, the Earl of Richmond, Gavin Stenhouse, who performed as the Marquess of Dorset, and Simon Lee Phillips, who was Sir James Tyrrel/the Duke of Norfolk. King Edward IV/the Bishop of Ely also made an appearance, as Andrew Long appeared at Tribeca, as...

The line between theatre and cinema is becoming increasingly blurred, as while triumphant productions such as War Horse and Jersey Boys make their way to the big screen, classic feature films such as The Lion King, and more recently Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, are being reimagined on stage. There have been some plays that have even been screened in cinemas of late – and it’s a notion now explored in Jeremy Whelehan’s documentary Now: In the Wings on a World Stage, as the two mediums become almost interchangeable.
In what is effectively Kevin Spacey and Sam Mendes’ first screen collaboration since American Beauty, Whelehan follows the pair, along with the fellow members of the Bridge Project Company, as they tour the world with their stage production of Richard III. While fascinating to see such talented actors – not to mention the indelible, diligent crew – at the top of their game and honing their craft,...

In the early 1990s, almost nobody knew who Kevin Spacey was – unless you frequented Broadway. 10 years later, he was an internationally loved talent with two Oscars on his mantle (for The Usual Suspects and American Beauty). While many actors of a similar demand would continue reaping in big roles on the screen, Spacey returned to the stage – he previously won a Tony in 1991 for Neil Simon’s Lost in Yonkers – and became the artistic director of London’s Old Vic theatre.
During his time shifting from the stage to the screen and back again, he remained close friends with his American Beauty director Sam Mendes, an enormous presence in the theatre world. Along with Mendes, Spacey worked on a unique production of Richard III as part of the Bridge Theatre Project in 2012, in which he played the lead role.

Chicago – “Hi-diddle-dee-dee, the actor’s life for me!” Kevin Spacey, who took a considerable break from movie acting to become Artistic Director of the Old Vic Theater in London, puts the fruit of those labors in a new documentary, “Now: In the Wings on a World Stage.” The film chronicles the international tour of Spacey and the troupe performing William Shakespeare’s “Richard III.”
Rating: 3.0/5.0
The stage tour mixed American and British actors, and essentially presents talking head interviews and exposition of the stagecraft necessary to produce the complex work. It focuses on Kevin Spacey and his capacity to embody a role, in this collaboration with director Sam Mendes, who had brought Spacey to film prominence in 1999’s “American Beauty.” The documentary is direct, somewhat fascinating and a bit redundant as the tour wears on, but still holds an attraction in the nuts and bolts, the slings and arrows, in...

Now: In the Wings on a World Stage, a new documentary from executive producer Kevin Spacey about his world tour of Richard III with nearly 20 actors for 200 sold-out performances, actually has a very apt subtitle, since viewers of this doc remain in the wings for the entire runtime, away from much of the stage action and the creative journey of its stars.
Now relies heavily on context and easy quotes from Spacey and Sam Mendes (who directed the play) – both Oscar-winners for their first collaboration, American Beauty – to introduce audiences to what draws these men best known for cinema to the theatre. Mendes was the brainchild of The Bridge Project, a trans-Atlantic company that brought actors from the New York and London theatre scene together. Its final production in 2012 was Richard III, with Spacey in the title role as one of Shakespeare’s most gleefully corrupt misanthropes.

It's easy to assume that a documentary financed and self-released by Kevin Spacey will be a vanity project. Especially the Tribeca Film Festival world premiere "Now in the Wings on a World Stage," now streaming, which follows the head of the Old Vic around the world as he stars in 200 performances of Sam Mendes' Bridge Project production of Shakespeare's "Richard III." But the documentary, which Spacey and rookie director Jeremy Whelehan (his former associate producer on "Beyond the Sea" and Old Vic assistant director) have been tinkering with for two years, is worth waiting for. Sure, Spacey comes off well as the tireless star boss who takes his company on a scenic yacht trip off the coast of Australia during their Sydney tour. Would he have done that if he wasn't filming for posterity? Well, it makes for a great scene. The doc takes a behind-the-scenes look at how a unique company of 20 actors,...

Tribeca Film Festival Coverage continues. Here's abstew on a Kevin Spacey doc
"That's why the film is called 'Now', it's not just the first word spoken at the beginning of the play, but it was meant to evoke that immediacy of live theatre. It's happening right now, in front of you," director Jeremy Whelehan said to a packed audience at the world premiere of his documentary film Now: In the Wings on a World Stage.
The film chronicles The Bridge Project, a transatlantic theatre company that was a collaboration of the British Old Vic (which for the past 10 years has had two-time Oscar winner Kevin Spacey at the helm as Artistic Director) and New York's Bam, and the last production the company performed, Richard III. The documentary (which Spacey also produced) goes behind the scenes of director Sam Mendes' production of the Shakespeare work about the deformed, power-hungry king and the year long,...

Kevin Spacey proved a gnarled and magnificent Richard III in Sam Mendes's globe-straddling 2011–2012 production of Shakespeare's ever-resonant tragedy. Crimped up like a ginger root, Spacey's power-mad runt schemed and spat with consummate wickedness, tilting between the comic and the terrifying, even stirring something like sympathy. Too bad this doc covering the production's 200 performances around the world is committed to the undertaking rather than to the work itself. Early on, we hear Spacey's Richard bark, “Now is the winter of our discontent, ” but Jeremy Whelehan's film, distractible as a puppy in a room full of tennis balls, then jumps to something else, apparently suffering from the misapprehension that watching stage crews mount the sets or audience...

"I am a theater rat," announced Kevin Spacey last night to a Tribeca Film Festival crowd gathered for a festival panel centered on the making of "Now: In The Wings On A World Stage," a documentary chronicling the first trans-Atlantic theater troupe, the Bridge Project Company, as they took "Richard III" around the world. After viewing the film, two things became very clear: 1) "World Stage" is no understatement, as the 20 British and American actors and director Sam Mendes traveled and performed in Greece, Italy, Beijing, Australia, New York, and beyond, and 2) that being a "theater rat" involves grueling work, vivid adventures, pain, passion, humor, and verve. Spacey, director Jeremy Whelehan, and company members Jeremy Bobb, Hadyn Dwynne and Gemma Jones sat down following the film and talked about traveling the world, "House of Cards," and why theater will always trump film for Spacey. Here are fun facts from the event:...
