Originally, Archie Andrews and his pals at Riverdale High reflected the codification of teenage life, as they had more leisure time and disposable income. Once it hit big, the comic series and its infinite number of spinoffs, became stuck in amber, barely trying to keep up with changing trends (other than fashion) or concerns for teens. By the 2000s, the entire company was on the ropes, increasingly irrelevant in a rapidly changing world.
In comics, they threw a Hail Mary, revamping the writing and art, making the characters look and act in contemporary ways. Thanks to Mark Waid, Adam Hughes, Chip Zdarsky, and a few others, the characters were suddenly cool once more. The company’s product mix suddenly had the classic digest reprints, the new look, some Zombie title and they were saved.

For some time now, rumors have been swirling regarding crossovers involving characters from the respective universes established by DC and Archie. And while it remains unclear if this will serve as the first of several mashups or if it’ll just be a standalone venture, that doesn’t make the freshly announced Harley & Ivy Meet Betty & Veronica any less awesome.
Truth be told, we’re willing to tip our hats to both publishers for making this a reality since not only does uniting these two iconic duos seem so natural, but the fact remains that Harley Quinn and Betty & Veronica happen to be among the best books currently being served up by either entity. Oh, and there’s also the fact that the former Clown Princess of Crime is still riding her popularity from the Suicide Squad feature film, with Archie’s closest gal pals experiencing something similar with the hit TV series Riverdale.

Archie Comics' "Betty & Veronica" by Adam Hughes" #3, now available, is written by Hughes, with illustrations by Hughes, José Villarubia, Jack Morellick and a cover by Hughes:
"...it all breaks loose in 'Riverdale' as the final act of 'Betty ^ Veronica' reaches its combustible conclusion.
"The streets of Riverdale run red under the rockets’ red glare and no one will ever be the same..."
'Betty' first appeared in "Pep Comics" #22 while 'Veronica' made her debut a few months later in "Pep" #26, as an immediate rival to Betty for the affection of 'Archie'. Together the pair form the female part of the classic love triangle which has become a staple of the comic series since 1942.
In the 1950's "Mad Magazine" did a classic take on the characters.

This week, we brought word that Dark Knight III: The Master Race would be undergoing a slight name change upon its release as a collected edition, effectively being rechristened as Batman: The Dark Knight: The Master Race. Well, it appears that trend will continue with a companion book set to arrive this September.
If you’ve been keeping up with the threequel to Frank Miller’s immortal classic The Dark Knight Returns – or at least news pertaining to it – you’re likely aware that this limited series has seen an obscene amount of variant covers, particularly for the first couple issues. Normally, stuff like this appears as supplemental material in the back of its relevant trade, but if that were the case with this story, the book would’ve been as thick as the Yellow Pages.

This review is based off a volume that collects Batgirl #1-6.
For me, the past five or six years of Batgirl comics have been a mixed bag. Don’t get me wrong, I love the character of Barbara Gordon and am not naysaying any creators who’ve worked on the books by any means. It’s just that the tone of each particular run has been undoubtedly polarizing.
I think we can all agree that Gail Simone is a master of her craft, but some felt her New 52 tour of Batgirl went too dark, a product of that era. Personally, I really dug the material she put out. Gotham City is a dark, rough place and I like my comics to reflect that.
But when Brenden Fletcher, Cameron Stewart and Babs Tarr took over, they moved Ms. Gordon to Burnside, a hipster borough, and gave the book a very “young” feel,...

Every college freshman learns about price elasticity in Economics 101. Price elasticity simply means that consumers will be more accepting of price changes for some products than for others. And as I’ve been watching the CW’s new Riverdale television series, I’m translating this economic concept to Geek Culture. Specifically, I’m mesmerized how some fans embrace changes to pop culture properties with a Geek Culture Elasticity and others just can’t embrace changes.
Long-time Archie fans – he is, after all, celebrating his 75th anniversary this year – are wrapping their heads around this latest television incarnation. The new Riverdale show is a steamy and creepy manifestation of beloved characters that ostensibly represent Americana. Unlike their traditional comic counterparts, these versions of the characters were driven by dark and base motivations that are a part of real people (albeit gorgeous and glamorous versions of real people).
I really liked the show.

The Crown Season 1
This is going to be a relatively unusual column today as I am frequently stopping to watch the New York Giants/Green Bay Packers wild card game. Right now there are 20 seconds left in the 1st quarter, the G’ints just punted, and Green Bay’s drive will start on the 45 yard line. The Giants should be up by at least one touchdown, but Beckham has dropped two perfect passes in the end zone – commentators Joe Buck and Troy Aikman are speculating that it’s because of the cold weather and although that’s possible, that’s not what I expect from a player of Beckham’s caliber. He made the All-Pro team this year. Anyway, the G’ints are up by a field goal (that’s three points for you non-football fans out there) and Green Bay has yet to put anything on the board.

Turning 50 doesn’t have to be all doom and gloom. In fact, those typical black-and-white “50 years old” party decorations, suggesting that the celebrant is “so old,” seem out of place to me. Fifty can be fun. Fifty can be optimistic. Isn’t Hollywood’s most famous re-invented party boy, Robert Downey, Jr. over 50? Isn’t the always-engaging Marisa Tomei over 50?

Some of you who read my Facebook posts might have already seen this, but I think that it’s important enough to repeat the story. It’s from the “See Something, Say Something” school.
Yesterday I was walking down the block to the store and I passed a parked car with two dogs in it and all the windows closed, including the sunroof. It was 95 degrees here in Bayonne, which meant that inside the car it must have been at least 10 degrees hotter. I went into the restaurant on the corner and asked if anyone owned this car. No. So, what to do? I waited about five minutes to see if the owner came back – nope. So I called the police. I’m happy to say they showed up immediately. They went from door-to-door up and down the street, and to the storefronts to see if they could find the owner.

This week, Archie Comics announced a Kickstarter campaign to launch a bunch of new titles. If you read the comments at the link (which normally, I would never recommend), you’ll see people who object to Adam Hughes drawing Betty and Veronica because it objectifies the characters, seeing them through the male gaze.
First, let me say that I like Adam Hughes’ work. I think the women he draws, while beautiful, also look physically possible, more like movie stars with trainers than broomsticks with hair and boobs. If that gets me booted out of Feminism Camp, so be it.
But mostly, when has Betty and Veronica been about anything but the male gaze? Two beautiful teenage girls, interchangeable except for the color of their hair, wear the most revealing clothes the Comics Code would allow, mooning over a boy who is average at best. The fact that these have been...

Archie Comics
Archie Comics are a hardy perennial in the states, the stories of the titular teen heartthrob constantly balancing the affections of his two prospective suitors – Betty and Veronica – whilst his idiot friend Jughead sat in the background wearing…whatever that hat’s supposed to be, offering a comfortable, familiar feeling of a world that hasn’t changed for 75 years. Now, Archie Comics are planning to change that with a complete reboot funded by a new Kickstarter campaign.
Whilst the Archie titles don’t have the same popularity in the UK – outside of the odd reference in an episode of Friends, for example – they really are woven into the fabric of American pop culture, the town of Riverdale looking much the same today as it did when it started being published. Which makes the recent changes at the company even more radical. A world still stuck in the fifties had appropriately conservative values,...

These days Joss Whedon is known as the guy who delivered a game changer for the superhero genre in Marvel's The Avengers, and has since gone on to help spearhead the studio's big cinematic universe, in addition to directing the Avengers sequel Age of Ultron, due May 1. A 2005 Comic-Con teaser poster and original Adam Hughes promo sketch from Joss Whedon's cancelled, but still much-discussed Wonder Woman movie are up for grabs as part of an eBay auction to raise funds to help artist and long-time Comic-Con volunteer Clydene Nee with her medical bills (details here.) But today some rare promotional art for the film he was developing has surfaced, and the original art is currently up sale for sale on eBay for a good cause.
Money is being raised for Clydene Nee, who is suffering from kidney failure. "The money will go to help support her healthcare and living expenses. Clydene has worked in the comic book industry and is a long time and loved member of the art community." She was also a San Diego Comic-Con volunteer who is instrumental in the continued existence of Artists' Alley.
The art was created by Adam Hughes, and apparently prints of it were given away at Comic-Con back in 2005. When talking about his version of Wonder Woman, Whedon had this to...

It’s a bittersweet affair when one reads a Star Wars comic these days. Disney recently decided not to keep Star Wars at Dark Horse where it’s been since 1991 and instead is shipping it off to Marvel (which Disney owns) starting in 2015. This makes sense for Disney from a financial standpoint but not necessarily from a comics one.
-
It can be argued that Dark Horse’s release of the series Dark Empire coupled with Timothy Zahns Thrawn Trilogy started the second coming of Star Wars that lead to the special editions and later the prequel films. Dark Horse knows Star Wars and knows how to do Star Wars right. This is evident all throughout...

Archie Comics announced the unthinkable today: Legendary comic book character Archie Andrews will die to conclude the hit Life With Archie comic series.

The iconic comic book character, beloved by millions around the globe for over 70 years, will sacrifice himself heroically while saving the life of a friend in the pages of July’s Life With Archie #36, the final issue in the flash-forward series, which spotlights Archie’s adventures after high school and college.
“We’ve been building up to this moment since we launched Life With Archie five years ago, and knew that any book that was telling the story of Archie’s life as an adult had to also show his final moment,” said Archie Comics Publisher/Co-ceo Jon Goldwater. “Archie has and always will represent the best in all of us—he’s a hero, good-hearted, humble and inherently honorable. This is the time of year when the ComicMix crew starts to firm up our attendance at various comic conventions in the year ahead. It’s a frustrating process because there are a lot of shows and we can’t go to all the ones we’d like to attend.
It also makes me really angry.
Last year was the first in a long time that I went to a bunch of cons. It was fascinating and fun most of the time, but annoying at others. Twenty years after we started Friends of Lulu, there are still remarkably few women invited to be guests at the shows.
This is odd, because there are a lot of women working in the industry, and (capitalists take note) even more buying comics and tickets to cons. Wouldn’t show organizers like to demonstrate to this market segment that they are welcome and valued?...

So Infinity (w. Jonathan Hickman a. Jim Cheung, Dustin Weaver) concluded what’s been an interesting if not exactly mind-blowing run. The Avengers return to earth to sort out Thanos and his nasty mates, Maximus of the Inhumans cracks wise and saves the world and Rocket Raccoon makes an all-too brief (like, one panel appearance). The main point of the event seems to have been to launch the Inhumanity series – which to be fair, does look kind of interesting – but beyond that, I’m not sure what we’ve learnt. None of the characters seem to have radically changed from what I, as a pretty casual Marvel reader, understand to be their default personality setting to be. What happens to Thanos (and I don’t think it’s a spoiler to say that yes, something happens to the primary antagonist in the last issue of a comic book series) is cool,...

Inspired by the Adam Hughes’ artwork (which, in turn, was inspired by Gennedy Tartakovsky’s Star Wars: Clone Wars Animated Series), Gentle Giant Ltd. is proud to present a new Yoda statue, which is available to buy from our friends at Forbidden Planet.
Intended to be a companion piece to our upcoming Padme Amidala Statue, this fresh interpretation of the character – a realistic rendering inspired by animation – is dark, dramatic and unique. Boasting incredibly fine detail that no other incarnation of the character can compete with, this statue is a must-have for all true Star Wars fans.
Digitally sculpted by the master artisans at Gentle Giant Ltd. and individually hand-painted, each statue comes individually numbered and includes a matching certificate of authenticity.
We’re giving one lucky WhatCulture reader the chance to win this bust, just in time to make their Christmas decorations look an awful lot more bad-ass.

Well, it seems after some initial confusion the New 52 universe is starting to come into its’ own. Zero Year is redefining the Bat myth and we finally have a comic featuring Harley Quinn that doesn’t make us apathetic, angry or squirm. In fact what we do get is a clever, self aware and generally quite fun comic. The narrative isn’t really important as nothing really happens until the last few pages. What is important is what happens that seems surreal or unreal and breaks the fourth wall.
To surmise; Harley is bored sat inside a storage unit. She’s chilling out, eating candy, drinking soda pop, reading comics and listening to disembodied voices. The fun really starts when she starts hearing the voices of her new writing team; Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti. Cue a riotous adventure, or adventures, as Harley is whisked from one hypothetical adventure to...

Based on the Artwork of the incredibly talented Artgerm (Stanley Lau), Sideshow has put together a small trailer showing off their latest DC Covergirl Statue, Batgirl. As a fan of most of the redesigns (I did say most mind you, not all) it's nice to see more merchandise featuring those takes on the characters. Artgerm's art style seems to transfer perfectly to 3D, and I love that this rendition of Babs is more action based, and not the more humorous take of the Adam Hughes covergirl released a while back. You can peep the artwork above and the small trailer below. Babs will be released in August of this year, so who all is getting one? ...

Batman Urban Legend All Over Print T-Shirt Made from 100% Cotton, this white t-shirt features an all over print of Batman rendered in a thick, black ink by modern comic book legend, Jim Lee! Batman walks from the shadow, surrounded by...bats and splatter. Are the bats exploding or is the spatter effect altogether separate? Not sure. Anyway, this rather foreboding image of Batman is the result of an all-over printing process which jacks up the price a tad...but she's worth it. Catwoman #46 by Adam Hughes T-Shirt The Catwoman #46 by Adam Hughes T-Shirt presents one of the comic legend's celebrated Catwoman covers. The coquettish cat-burglar is posed on this particular cover with one hand on her hip and the other lifting her night-vision goggles because you're so bright she doesn't need to wear shades. Catwoman's back in the spotlight thanks to Anne Hathaway's (mostly) hater-silencing performance in The Dark Knight Rises.

Comics and all closely-related creative works in the geek spectrum are celebrated in the Eagle Awards 2012 - with the final round of voting now open to the public.
It's a chance to pick your favourite artist, writer, colourist, letterer, editor, publisher, story, graphic novel and comics magazine, along with American, British, European and manga titles.
But it goes beyond the printed page. There will be trophies for best web-based comic and comics website, while a further accolade will honour the best comics-related TV show or movie.
All the nominations are listed in full below.
It's apparent that the TV/film nominations do not necessarily have to be adapted from a comic. The contenders in this category are: The Big Bang Theory, The Walking Dead, X-Men; First Class, Captain America and Misfits.
The Big Bang Theory isn't derived from a comic but features four characters who are keen fans of comics and sci-fi culture.

It’s that time again… here are the preview materials for DC Comics releases for May 2012.
As you can see, DC is clearly getting excited about the imminent arrival of The Dark Knight Rises with new movie statues showing Anne Hathaway, Christian Bale, and Tom Hardy, the return of Grant Morrison and Chris Burnham’s Batman Incorporated and the long awaited arrival of Batman: Earth One by Geoff Johns and Gary Frank, and the Talon appearing in every single Batman book this month… and even All-Star Western?
Plus, with the return of Earth One, we also get the return of Earth Two– and the return of the World’s Finest.
Shall we get into it? Let’s!
As always, spoilers may lurk beyond this point.
