Over the past few months, Netflix has been busy treating its audience to new big-budget projects, from the live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender and Guy Ritchie's The Gentlemen to the much-hyped 3 Body Problem and Ripley with Andrew Scott. But as high-profile as Netflix's premieres are, they seem to pale in comparison to what competing streaming services are offering.

Apple Original Films announced today that Matthew Vaughn’s action comedy romance feature film Argylle will make its global streaming debut on Apple TV+ beginning Friday, April 12.
Released in theaters on February 2, 2024, the film was rated PG-13 by the MPA for strong violence, action, and some strong language. The film grossed $95.3 million at the worldwide box office, with $45.2 million coming from North American theaters and $50.1 million from international markets.
In anticipation of Argylle‘s streaming debut, K-pop superstars The Boyz have reimagined “Electric Energy,” the Ariana DeBose-led hit from Argylle. The soundtrack and today’s single release of “Electric Energy (Reimagination)” by The Boyz are available on all music streaming platforms.
Originally written by Gary Barlow, Stuart Price, Matthew Vaughn, and Lorne Balfefor for Matthew Vaughn’s razor-witted, reality-bending spy thriller, the song undergoes a remarkable transformation as produced by Stuart Price in collaboration with Lorne Balfe for Platoon.

If you’re in the mood for a light-hearted spy adventure with plenty of twists and turns that will make your head spin, Argylle is set to make its streaming debut later this month. Although director Matthew Vaughn has plans for sequels, he stated that he wanted to wait and see how the first film fared. Unfortunately for Vaughn, it wouldn’t become a success at the box office, earning just $92 million worldwide on a budget of $200 million. After its low performance, the star-studded action comedy will hope to find a second life as it premieres on AppleTV+ on Friday, April 12.
The plot synopsis from Apple reads,
“Elly Conway, played by Bryce Dallas Howard, is the reclusive cat loving author of a series of bestselling espionage novels about the impossibly glamorous secret agent Argylle (Henry Cavill) on a mission to unravel a nefarious spy syndicate. When Elly, with the help...

Composer Lorne Balfe has spent his career working on blockbusters including “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning” but even so, Matthew Vaughn’s spy thriller “Argylle,” which features an all-star cast including Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell and Henry Cavill, was one for the books. For a start, the soundtrack incorporates the Beatles’ last-ever record, “Now and Then,” the existence of which Balfe had to keep top secret for over a year until it was finally released last November.
The movie also involved Balfe making an album of cat sounds, provided by Vaughn’s moggy (and Howard’s co-star) Chip. “There were recordings of him while they were filming so we were able to chop it up and make it a percussion library,” says Balfe, a self-confessed dog person. “I’m going to post it on Twitter as a freebie so composers can use it and Chip...

It’s often said that before even considering building a new franchise, one should prioritize the individual success of the first film. That was the case with the Kingsman saga, which only took off after confirming its commercial and financial triumph. Its creator, Matthew Vaughn, now decides to expand it into a cinematic universe – with the intention of eventual crossovers – by assembling a new trilogy, starting precisely with Argylle. Walking into the theater, expectations weren’t particularly high – online debates about Henry Cavill‘s (Mission: Impossible – Fallout) ridiculous haircut didn’t form a very positive environment – but there was a reasonable hope for a pleasant cinephilic morning.
Beyond the star-studded cast, I was aware of the intriguing narrative premise. Argylle tells the story of Elly Conway – portrayed by Bryce Dallas Howard (Jurassic World Dominion) – an author of a highly successful spy book series. However, when her fictional plots begin to...

Ariana DeBose, Boy George and Nile Rodgers have teamed up for “Electric Energy,” the disco-infused bop featured in Matthew Vaughn’s “Argylle.”
Rodgers, who produced the track which plays over the film’s end credits, says he got a call from Vaughn asking if he wanted to be involved. Speaking with Variety over Zoom, the musician said although Vaughn sent him a demo track he still asked to see the film. “I have to see the film and have real context because I didn’t want to play blindly.” After seeing the film, his response was, “I was so overly sold. It was fun. I’m totally down.”
DeBose shot the film during the pandemic. “Before the big change,” she says referring to her 2022 awards season sweep as best supporting actress for her role in “West Side Story.” “We made the movie, and I had a wonderful time, and then I won the Oscar.

As Matthew Vaughn’s latest spy adventure “Argylle” inches closer to its premiere, one important question remains unanswered: Who is Elly Conway?
For those unfamiliar with “Argylle,” the film — starring Henry Cavill, Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, Dua Lipa and more — is said to be based on a book of the same name by Conway, an unknown, first-time author. Indeed, the book itself is real, published by Penguin and available for purchase.
But in a twist revealed by the movie’s trailer, Conway is also the name of Howard’s character, a bestselling spy novelist who finds herself involved in some real-life espionage. The identity of the true Conway — if there is one — has yet to be revealed, and some fans have even postulated that Taylor Swift is the person behind the “Argylle” novel, a rumor that Vaughn was quick to shut down. As Martin Scorsese once said, “Music and cinema fit together naturally. Because there’s a kind of intrinsic musicality to the way moving images work when they’re put together. It’s been said that cinema and music are very close as art forms, and I think that’s true.” Indeed, the right piece of music––whether it’s an original score or a carefully selected song––can do wonders for a sequence, and today we’re looking at the 20 films that best expressed that notion in 2023.
From seasoned composers to accomplished musicians, as well as a smattering of soundtracks, each perfectly transported us. Check out our rundown of the top 20, which includes streams to each soundtrack in full where available.

With all the talk of super-hero fatigue, it’s interesting to note that we never talk about espionage fatigue despite the steady stream of spies from a variety of franchises. One of the oldest and long-running series is, of course, Mission: Impossible. Once a lauded television series, it transitioned to film in 1996 and somehow, 27 years later, it’s still chugging along, in some ways invigorated with new life.
Led by the once-ageless Tom Cruise, he remains the fittest sixty-something actor in the world, continuing to do his own stunts and working with his personal guru Christopher McQuarrie, who returned for the newest offering, Dead-Reckoning Part One, out now from Paramount Home Entertainment.
The filming was originally intended to shoot back-to-back with the film’s released a year apart. Then came Covid-19 and now the Sga strike so those plans got scuttled. That said, their threat, Artificial Intelligence, has proven increasingly timely with every passing month.

Jack Black brought his piano ballad “Peaches” from The Super Mario Bros. Movie to the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on Sunday. During the surprise performance at The Game Awards 10–Year Concert, one-half of Tenacious D was accompanied by the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, conducted by Lorne Balfe. Watch it below.
After entering from stage right, Black — whose character Bowser dedicates the song to Princess Peach (voiced by Anya Taylor-Joy) in the record-breaking movie — let loose an especially schmaltzy, over-the-top rendition of his first solo hit while rocking the same green suit and red hairpiece from the music video. Meanwhile, footage of Peach from the film played on the giant screen hanging over the stage.
Following its release in April, “Peaches” peaked at No. 56 on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent a total of five weeks on the chart. Its music video, directed by Lyrical Lemonade’s Cole Bennett, has racked up 45 million YouTube views to date.

On social media, writer/director Christopher McQuarrie just announced that Rolf Saxon, the actor who played unlucky CIA agent William Donloe in Brian De Palma’s 1996 masterpiece “Mission: Impossible” will be returning for the eighth film, “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, Part Two” (due out in the summer of 2024).
If, for some reason, you don’t have an encyclopedic knowledge of the franchise, in the first movie Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his team, then comprised of Luther (Ving Rhames), Krieger (Jean Reno) and Claire (Emmanuele Béart), stage an audacious break-in at the CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia. This involves sneaking into the “black vault,” an ultra-secure CIA database overseen by William Donloe, an analyst at the agency. It’s Donloe’s vault that Hunt infiltrates by suspending himself from the ceiling,...

Plot: “Tetris” tells the unbelievable story of how one of the world’s most popular video games found its way to avid players around the globe. Henk Rogers (Taron Egerton) discovers Tetris in 1988, and then risks everything by traveling to the Soviet Union, where he joins forces with inventor Alexey Pajitnov (Nikita Efremov) to bring the game to the masses. Based on a true story, “Tetris” is a Cold War–era thriller on steroids, with double-crossing villains, unlikely heroes and a nail-biting race to the finish.
Review: Tetris should have been a dumb movie. The sheer idea of making a film out of the worldwide best-selling video game instantly conjured images from Adam Sandler’s bizarre, awful 2015 movie, Pixels. When details came forward that the movie would instead chronicle the too crazy to not be true story of how the game made its way out of Soviet Russia and onto Nintendo’s GameBoy,...

Breathing life into the beloved board game Dungeons & Dragons was no easy feat, as it took the roleplaying tabletop game’s long-gestating feature film adaptation four years to reach the silver screen on the opening night of this year’s SXSW. But patience, passion, and perseverance prevailed — and, incidentally, those aren’t just traits necessary for making any film, they’re also the exact mix one needs to succeed in the playing of the beloved RPG itself.
Drawing inspiration from the game’s unique improvisation and communal creativity, directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein successfully construct with “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.”
The story follows the heartbroken and comically calculated Edgin (played by the charming Chris Pine), an ex-Harper who has turned to petty thievery. He escapes prison with his barbarian best friend Holga (Michelle Rodriguez), who has spent years helping him raise his daughter Kira...

2022 was a very, very good year for superhero scores. Usually, they can be a little hit or miss — but recent years have seen a notable spike in quality in the music for Marvel's Cinematic Universe, and for its counterpart at DC. Part of that might have to do with the innovative composers that have been contributing recently, names like Ramin Djawadi, Lorne Balfe, and, of course, Ludwig Göransson.
Göransson himself is pretty famous for his work on the "Black Panther" score, which secured him his first Academy Award nomination (and win) in 2019. With his return to scoring its sequel, "Wakanda Forever," many thought that he'd be a shoo-in for another nom this time around. The same could also be said for a certain score from the DC camp, Michael Giacchino's "The Batman." Giacchino is no stranger to that Oscar love either: he's been nominated twice for his work on Pixar films "Up" and "Ratatouille,...

The "Mission: Impossible" franchise is a revolving door. Countless characters appear in one movie and then vanish without a trace, let alone a name-drop, from the next one. The only anchors from the beginning to the present are Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt and Ving Rhames as Luther Stickell.
These hi-and-byes happened behind the camera too. From the first 1996 "Mission: Impossible" up to 2015's "Mission: Impossible -- Rogue Nation," each film had a different director. This was what kept the franchise fresh even though the scripts were formulaic (Ethan's framed for treason by the real mole in every other movie). Each director had a different style and so told the story in a different way.
Brian De Palma's original "Mission: Impossible" had the most low-key set pieces but still had his usual boiling suspense; take the scene where Ethan is accused of being a mole by his handler Kittridge...

Dynamic mother-daughter and best friend duo Ginny (Antonia Gentry) and Georgia Miller (Brianne Howey) return in “Ginny & Georgia” Season 2, which gets even more chaotic than the already very complex first season of the Netflix show. Another of Georgia’s past loves enters the mix, she commits some more questionable actions and many other twists and turns develop within the 10 hour-long episodes.
Ginny and her friends are no strangers to the TikTok scene, so some song choices reflect Gen Z’s poppy preferences. The show is also not afraid to explore both the high, happy feelings of life as well as the deeper, darker, lower ones, and it does so sonically with some beautiful choices. Felix Mallard chose a song for an important scene of his, and actress Brianne Howey easily chose a song to embody her character Georgia.

The nominees for the Oscar for best original song could make for a star-studded category, as several of the leading contenders — representing films like Disney/Marvel’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Sony’s Devotion, Paramount’s Top Gun: Maverick and Pixar’s Turning Red, among others — were written and performed by some of our leading pop stars.
From new songs from Oscar winners Lady Gaga, Billie Eilish and Finneas to the long-awaited new track from Rihanna, these original compositions will aim to land on the category’s short list (which is announced Dec. 21) before making it to the home stretch when the nominations are announced next January.
Rihanna – “Lift Me Up”
The singer (and fashion mogul) returned from a years-long hiatus from music with this ballad for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, co-written with the film’s composer, Ludwig Göransson, writer-director Ryan Coogler and Nigerian singer Tems.

You can be the destroyer of this world…or you can be its Savior
Black Adam is finally out, and if you haven’t seen it, do. While the first thing that separates the character from a lot of the other superhero movies in the genre, is that, for starters, he’s not a hero. He’s an antihero in its near purest form. Dwayne Johnson, master of shameless self promotion has been touting the greatness of this film for a while now, and this time, beyond a shadow of a doubt, he’s right. And what Black Adam believes is right comes from a place of ultimate struggle… and sacrifice.

Black Adam is a bewildering entry in a franchise already falling apart at the seams. It’s therefore a perfect fit for what one day might be described as the “chaos era” of DC Comics’s corporate owners Warner Bros. This year, the studio merged with Discovery Group and placed Discovery’s CEO David Zaslav at its head. He then launched a wrecking ball at Warner’s creative portfolio – downsizing its animation unit, threatening any number of forthcoming films and TV shows, and notoriously cancelling HBO Max’s 90m Batgirl film.
Black Adam, starring Dwayne Johnson, may predate this entire debacle, but it has incidentally harnessed that same sentiment of action without thought. It’s relentless but stubbornly monotonous – what I imagine it’s like to be picked up curbside...

It's been well over a year since Dwayne Johnson started posting set photos and video messages to fans on social media about how the "hierarchy of power in the DC Universe is about to change" through his starring role in "Black Adam." Some have suggested, rather heretically, that Johnson's antihero might not actually change the hierarchy of power.
Either way, with "Black Adam" now playing in theaters, anyone who keeps abreast of movie news on a daily basis is likely to have heard more about that than they ever needed to or will want to again. It's almost as if we could use something else to listen to ... say, the "Black Adam" soundtrack on vinyl.
"Ladies and gentlemen and children of all ages" (as Johnson would say), if you inhabit the Venn diagram of rabid DC fans and patient vinyl record collectors, then you are in luck. The "Black Adam...

“Black Adam” is here and, at least according to actor Dwayne Johnson, he’s ready to upend the hierarchy of the DC Universe.
A spin-off of sorts from DC’s earlier “Shazam!”, “Black Adam” follows Johnson’s Teth-Adam, a demigod that had been imprisoned for 5,000 years and has now been unleashed in the turbulent, fictionalized North African nation of Kahndaq (instead of Egypt).
Kahndaq is a nation overruled by a mass of warlords known as “intergang,” meaning that Teth-Adam has a lot of cleaning up to do. (And this is before one of the intergang warlords zeroes in on a mystical crown that can turn him into the literal devil.) Teth-Adam learns to be a little more human thanks to his interactions with some local freedom fighters and comes to an understanding with the Justice Society (led by Aldis Hodge’s Hawkman), standing in for the larger DC Universe.

WaterTower Music has released the first music to be heard from the upcoming New Line Cinema action adventure “Black Adam,” starring Dwayne Johnson. The first-ever feature film to explore the story of the uncompromising DC antihero comes to the big screen under the direction of Jaume Collet-Serra (“Jungle Cruise”). The Black Adam Theme (from “Black Adam”) by highly respected Grammy Award-winning and Emmy-nominated composer Lorne Balfe has just been released – in advance of the film and soundtrack release. “Black Adam” smashes into theaters and IMAX internationally beginning 19 October 2022, and in North America on October 21, 2022.
Balfe’s vision for the music of Black Adam encompasses an exploration into the back stories that define the characters. The composer commented on that approach. “It was exciting to get into the Black Adam theme, and I really wanted to capture his essence as the DC comic book world’s anti-hero. We had a large...

Fans of John Michael McDonagh should find much to love in the writer/director’s fourth feature, The Forgiven, but it lacks the refined structure, likeable characters and charred heart of his earlier work.
Based on a novel by Lawrence Osborne, The Forgiven tells the tale of stuck-up, married couple, David (Ralph Fiennes) and Jo (Jessica Chastain), who travel to Morocco to attend a lavish party thrown by wealthy friends, Richard (Matt Smith) and Dally (Caleb Landry Jones). En route, David accidentally runs over a teenage boy, Driss (Omar Ghazaoui), and is forced to face repercussions of the event while partying with pals. The police are convinced it was an accident but when the late boy’s father, Abdellah (Ismael Kanetar) arrives, David is forced to accompany him to help bury his son and face further consequences.

The Hollywood Reporter said during the panel discussion:
Johnson tackled an age-old question: who would win in a fight, Black Adam or Superman? Earlier in the week, rumors circulated that Man of Steel actor Henry Cavill might show up or send a video message for the panel, but that didn’t come to fruition.
Said the actor of a matchup between the DC characters: “Pound for pound, they are pretty close. I guess it probably all depends on who is playing Superman.
Dwayne Johnson flew in as DC Super Hero Black Adam during Warner Bros. Pictures theatrical panel at Saturday’s Comic Con panel. This guy know how to make an entrance!
“Hall H, you have been warned. The DC universe will never be the same again,” boomed Johnson.

“Top Gun: Maverick” is a miraculous achievement, as is evidenced in the fact that it recently broke the 1 billion box office milestone. One of movie’s many secret weapons is its music, which is credited to original composer Harold Faltermeyer, Hans Zimmer and Lady Gaga, with the music produced by “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” composer Lorne Balfe.
Coming 36 years after the original “Top Gun,” which itself helped define a movie-going era, this new Tom Cruise-starring juggernaut could have slipped into pointless nostalgia – but doesn’t. Credit where it’s due: The music, which includes aural motifs from the original along with one key soundtrack cut, is one of its all-new flavors. A wonderful mix of Zimmer and Faltermeyer’s scoring sensibilities, the film’s soundtrack is rounded out with some heartfelt emotionality from Gaga’s songs.

Enough sprawling fantasy epics have been adapted for film and TV in the past 20 years that the genre has developed a set of conventional sights and sounds. The music, for example, has its own sense of sprawl, with sweeping orchestral and choral arrangements whose influence traces back to Tolkien — or, in this case, Howard Shore’s Wagnerian opus for the Peter Jackson “Lord of the Rings” films. When approaching Amazon Prime Video’s take on “The Wheel Of Time,” composer Lorne Balfe and and showrunner Rafe Judkins were determined to buck convention. Balfe created distinctly different sounds that aren’t necessarily concerned with making the world introduced in Robert Jordan’s bestselling novels feel vast and operatic. But he did create a lot of them.

It has been some time since we saw a film like Top Gun: Maverick. From the lightening strike Jerry Bruckheimer Films logo at the start, to the closing music-backed character end credits cast roll call (ala Predator and Con Air), Top Gun Maverick simply drips with ‘80s and ‘90s charisma. “They don’t make ’em like that anymore” they always say…well, Tom Cruise does! And Tron Legacy’s Joseph Kosinski is only too happy to oblige in feeding our need, our need for a good old fashioned, hand-crafted, blockbuster.
The plot sees Maverick (Cruise) still refusing to move up the ranks, and instead opting to stay in the cockpit, constantly pushing the boundaries of flight and speed. One death defying act however lands him in trouble but instead of a wrap on the knuckles, he finds himself called back to the United States Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor program,...

In one of several meaty monologues Sean Harris gets to chew on in Mission: Impossible – Fallout, his villainous Solomon Lane turns the franchise’s most famous line in on itself. “Your mission, should you choose to accept it,” he whispers with the conspiratorial undertones of Lucifer. “I wonder, Ethan, did you ever choose not to? Did you ever stop and ask yourself who it was giving you the orders or why?”
It’s a great smaller moment in a movie remembered largely for its epic bombast (as you’ll see below), and another example of writer-director Christopher McQuarrie digging down into the franchise’s fundamentals at a granular level. Ethan and his team of fellow highly skilled Imf operatives always accept the mission. Heck, oftentimes they take it a step further and go rogue, completing the mission long after their superiors have thrown in the towel. It’s why we enjoy watching these movies,...

“They are borne out of the elements — out of earth, wind — so we always tried to start with natural sounds and build them through that,” explains “The Wheel of Time” supervising sound editor Matt Skelding about the process of creating the sounds of magic for the epic fantasy drama series. We talked to Skelding as part of our “Meet the Experts” TV sound editors and mixers panel. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
Based on the classic series of fantasy novels by Robert Jordan, “The Wheel of Time” tells the story of Moiraine (Rosamund Pike), a powerful wielder of the One Power who seeks out a group of young men and women, one of whom she believes to be the reincarnation of the Dragon, who is prophesied to either save the world or end it. Because Skelding wanted to bring a feminine quality to Moiraine’s abilities, he brought in...

After a making a record-breaking 160.5 million and sporting an exceptional 96 on Rotten Tomatoes, Tom Cruise’s high-flying “Top Gun: Maverick” is among the top movie successes of the year. With love pouring in for the second chapter of the story of test pilot and flight instructor Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, can this fighter stay airborne for the next seven months and lead to Academy Awards success?
Casual awards viewers and fans have made comparisons to George Miller’s “Mad Max: Fury Road” as a possible Oscars point of comparison – a pretty wild and far-fetched correlation. One of only six movies to be nominated in every artisan category, Miller’s movie rejuvenated its franchise and arguably the entire action genre. “Maverick,” likewise, is a wonderful callback to its 1986 predecessor and boasts some fantastic effects and achievements.

The main title credits to “Top Gun: Maverick” are both surprising and confusing: “Music by Harold Faltermeyer, Lady Gaga and Hans Zimmer. Score produced by Lorne Balfe.”
That may sound like a musical mess, but aside from Gaga, all the players have connections to the original “Top Gun” or each other through previous collaborations. Berlin-based Faltermeyer scored the original 1986 “Top Gun,” winning a Grammy for the instrumental “Top Gun Anthem,” while Zimmer scored four earlier Tom Cruise films including “Rain Man,” “Days of Thunder” and “Mission: Impossible II.”
The London-based Balfe has frequently collaborated with Zimmer on various scores (from “The Dark Knight” to “Dunkirk”), scored “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” for Cruise, and and is currently working with Cruise on “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning.” The Oscar- and multiple Grammy-winning Gaga penned the new movie’s “Hold My Hand,” already touted as an original song front-runner.

Despite being one of the Og six Avengers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) is usually forgotten at worst and overlooked at best. That’s been the long-running joke in the MCU and Irl, so it’s not surprising that he never had his own theme until Disney+’s “Hawkeye” came along. And composers Christophe Beck, an Emmy winner who was nominated last year for “WandaVision,” and Michael Paraskevas jumped at the opportunity to give the archer some signature music at long last.
“It’s an amazing feeling, especially with a franchise as storied and as vast as the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The opportunity to set the tone for a character is one that I relish,” Beck tells Gold Derby in an interview with Paraskevas (watch the exclusive video interview above). “I loved doing it for Wanda and Vision in ‘WandaVision,’ and especially here because, as you mentioned,...
