The Oscar Best Original Song nominees list is packed with a powerhouse roster of talent, including Rihanna, Lady Gaga, David Byrne. That sets up a collision of current musical giants come Oscar night. Of course, there’s Diane Warren, the recipient of an Honorary Oscar last month and a musical giant in her own right. She’s garnered a 14th nomination in the category with “Applause,” from the little-seen doc Tell It Like a Woman.
Not on the list is Taylor Swift, whose “Carolina” from Where the Crawdads Sing was on the shortlist of 15 films in contention to be nominated.
While she is a seven-time Grammy winner, Rihanna’s nomination today is her first Oscar nod.

The Oscar category of Best Original Song seems to have a concrete group of four tunes anticipated to be selected as nominees for Tuesday’s announcement. They include Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award winner “Naatu Naatu” from “Rrr” (M.M. Keeravani and Chandrabose), plus “Hold My Hand” from “Top Gun: Maverick”, “Lift Me Up” from “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”, and “Ciao Papa” from “Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio”. That leaves at least one spot potentially open for a surprise nominee. When predicting the song category, it is best to keep in mind that the music branch clearly has their favorites, and that usually tends to fill up a couple uncertain slots. This year, two of those songwriters may have a better shot at another Oscar nomination than most people think: perennial nominees Diane Warren for “Applause” from “Tell It Like A Woman,” and J. Ralph for “Dust & Ash” from the documentary...

For acclaimed re-recording mixer Jon Taylor, getting the chance to work on “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” was an entirely new experience.
“I’ve never done a film like this before,” Taylor, a four-time Oscar nominee for “Unbroken,” “Birdman,” “The Revenant” and “First Man,” tells Gold Derby about the stop-motion animated feature in an exclusive video interview as part of our Meet the Experts: Sound panel. The medium, Taylor says, provided the sound team with many advantages, but also some challenges. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
“It’s all so precise in the sound that there’s nowhere to hide. You just don’t add extra things to cover production flaws or help loop lines,” he adds. “All of the dialogue and all the music is recorded generally in many different places over the past three years or so. And stringing that together to make it sound like one is definitely a challenge.

The Golden Globes attempted to make a big comeback this year, following 2022's embarrassing lack of a televised ceremony in the wake of revelations about backing organisation the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's legacy of racially troubling decisions, corruption and other issues. Though Ricky Gervais was not around to stick a knife in, host Jerrod Carmichael aimed for truth-telling and satire from the start, though it was tough to avoid a feeling that this was an awards show with a cloud hanging over it.
Presenters awkwardly had to hand out different categories and, while the alcohol was clearly flowing, the whole affair had a typically undisciplined feel.
Film-wise, there were some expected wins.

It was the 80th Golden Globe Awards, the 31st to be televised by NBC and the first to be broadcast since the Hollywood Foreign Press Association became embroiled in a string of image-damaging controversies. For the first time since 1962, the show took place on a tame Tuesday night instead of the usual weekend-closing Sunday evening booze-fest of years past. And it ran long.
Given how many prominent people in Hollywood have recoiled from the HFPA — “The Whale” star Brendan Fraser announced he would not attend the ceremony and he stuck to his word; Tom Cruise returned his three Golden Globes in 2021 — the big question going into the evening was how it would all play out. Would anyone show up? Would anyone refer to the elephant in the room that is the HFPA’s tarnished reputation?
The answer was yes and yes.

The nominees for Best Original Song at the 2023 Golden Globes offer a variety of different music genres, not least of which is the pop hit “Naatu Naatu” from the Indian epic action movie “Rrr.” The song and dance number composed by nominees M.M. Keeravani and written by Chandrabose, as well as sung by Kaala Bhairava and Rahul Sipligunj, has become a viral hit and an instant standout among the movie’s musical soundtrack. The film, directed by S. S. Rajamouli, revolves around a fictional friendship between two true figures in the 1920s, Alluri Sitarama Raju (Ram Charan) and Komaram Bheem (N.T. Rama Rao Jr.) fighting for their country against the British Raj. The movie is nominated for a pair of Golden Globes, the other being Best Non-English Language Film, where it’s the overwhelming front-runner. But can “Rrr” go two for two and also clinch Best Original Song?

Shortlists have been revealed for the music categories for the 95th Academy Awards, and 15 semifinalists each for the Best Original Score and Best Original Song categories will compete for nominations that will be announced on Jan. 24, 2023.
As expected, the song category shortlist is chock-full of pop superstars such as Taylor Swift, The Weeknd, Lady Gaga, Rihanna and Selena Gomez among the 15; however, last year’s Best Original Song victors Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell did not make the cut for their contribution of “Nobody Like U” to Pixar’s “Turning Red.”

Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio is the second Pinocchio movie of the year. But, while Robert Zemeckis and Disney remade its animated adaptation in live action, del Toro returned to the original Carlo Collodi book for a stop-motion take. It took him 14 years to bring it to life, but Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio is now streaming on Netflix after it debuted December 9 and made it to the Top 10 in 79 countries.
Del Toro first announced the film in 2008. By 2011 he’d hired Mark Gustafson and artist Gris Grimley, who illustrated a 2002 edition of the Collodi book, to direct a stop-motion adaptation. Del Toro was producing, but he eventually replaced Grimley as co-director. It still took until 2018 for the project to land at Netflix and animation to begin.
The faithful adaptation is necessarily darker than the Disney version. It introduces Geppetto (voice of David Bradley) and his 10-year-old son Carlo (Gregory Mann...

Guillermo Del Toro on the 1,000-Day ‘Pinocchio’ Shoot and His 22 Finished Scripts Waiting to be Made
Guillermo del Toro loves cinema, and cinema loves him right back. He also knows the value of listening to collaborators and fellow filmmakers about getting the best possible result when making a feature, especially a passion project. “We don’t run a monarchy,” he tells Variety‘s Awards Circuit Podcast. “We run a beautiful collaborative effort. The animators are given a voice. What is impossible is the monarchy is not a desirable state for a storyteller. It’s important to have the last word. It’s not important to have the only word.”
On this episode of the award-winning Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, we talk with the visionary filmmaker about his new film, discussing the process of bringing the film to the big screen which took over 1,000 days to shoot, and the 22 screenplays he’s yet to make. Listen below:

To capture the essence of Guillermo del Toro’s “Pinocchio,” on Netflix Dec. 9, composer Alexandre Desplat came up with an ingenious idea: a score performed only with wood instruments.
“I always like to find an ensemble of instruments that reflect the film or soul of the film,” the composer tells Variety as he shares two exclusive cues from the movie. “Geppetto’s a woodworker, and Pinocchio is made of wood.”
Desplat pauses. “Hold on, one second,” he says during our Zoom call before leaving the room. When he returns, he holds up a wooden figurine of Pinocchio to the screen.
“This little wooden boy, as they called him in the film — I thought by using wood instruments, it would do something different than just having a symphony orchestra,” Desplat explains, toying with the miniature puppet in his hands.
“I’m sure nobody notices, which is fine. We don’t want anyone to say,...

The first reviews are in for “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” and by all indications, the stop-motion animation is a resounding success. Fifteen years in the making, the film co-directed by del Toro and Mark Gustafson boasts an all-star cast of voice talent, including Ewan McGregor, Cate Blanchett, Christoph Waltz and Tilda Swinton. However, overwhelming praise for the latest take on Carlo Collodi’s classic tale centered on its visual and thematic approach.
Set in 1930s fascist Italy, “Pinocchio” separates itself from the rest as a “family movie” that “does not shy away from dark themes of death and war,” per Insider. Its critic Ayomikun Adekaiyero wrote that the adaptation “justifies its existence by modernizing the tale with beautiful stop-motion animation and a tear-jerking story.” On the flip side, Adekaiyero was “disappointed by the mediocrity of the musical elements of the movie,” adding that they were “secondary to the story.

For Guillermo del Toro, it wasn’t a question of why stop-motion fit his new version of “Pinocchio,” but why it had never been attempted before. After all, Carlo Collodi’s enduring fable about a wooden puppet who longs to be a real boy cries out for the tactile, handmade technique.
“It’s the perfect way to tell the story,” del Toro told IndieWire, following a sneak peek of the first 38 minutes of his Netflix movie (premiering this weekend at the London Film Festival ahead of its closing-night special presentation at L.A.’s Animation Is Film Festival on October 29). “Everyone is a puppet. Being animated makes the existence of Pinocchio completely naturalistic the way you’re telling the tale. I’m surprised, happy, that it hasn’t been tackled like that before. It comes so naturally to the tale.”

Exclusive: Guillermo del Toro will add a further string to his bow this season as part of the songwriting team behind the music of Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio. Del Toro directs his warm and wild stop-motion animated adaptation of the classic story from Carlo Collodi with Mark Gustafson (Fantastic Mr. Fox). It is a project the Oscar-winning filmmaker has nurtured for years, and he also co-wrote the screenplay with Patrick McHale. The film makes its world premiere at the London Film Festival on Saturday.
I can confirm that the project marks del Toro’s debut outing as a songwriter, too. The musical film features several numbers with music by Alexandre Desplat—who won his second Oscar for his score for del Toro’s The Shape of Water—and lyrics by Roeban Katz and del Toro.
