There’s no doubting that the budgets and ambitions of music videos have dwindled since the glory days of MTV. We live in the age of TikTok-targeted ephemera. Yet miraculously, 2023 gave a much-needed shot of cinematic life to the form.
The best videos of the year emphasized meticulous technique over virality, offering intimate, impressionistic portraits of their respective artists’ interior lives and thoughts. Lana Del Rey and Lucy Dacus subverted Old Hollywood tropes, with a meta riff on studio system-era glamor and a lesbian tweaking of Wizard of Oz, respectively.
Others went bigger. Troye Sivan brought back the sheen and unabashed sexuality of Y2K pop princesses with a drag transformation that represents the performance of his career to date. Doja Cat took a maximalist approach to portraying the simultaneous highs and horrors of stardom, while Olivia Rodrigo constructed an elaborate, blood-splattered supernatural story to rival The Lost Boys.

Lana Del Rey drapes a few pieces of jewelry across her neck in the 10-minute-long music video for “Candy Necklace,” but none of them are made out of chalky, compressed sugars. They’re strings of pearls and high-quality silvers encrusted with diamonds and gemstones — the dressings of a true Hollywood starlet.
Over the course of the visual, directed by Rich Lee, Del Rey undergoes transformations into leading ladies like Marilyn Monroe and others who never made it to the big screen, including Elizabeth Short, otherwise known as the Black Dahlia.

Lana Del Rey has shared a new music video for “Candy Necklace,” a collaboration with Jon Batiste from her latest album, Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvd.
Directed by Rich Lee, the 10-minute, black-and-white clip goes behind the scenes as Del Rey channels past Hollywood starlets including Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Short (better known as the Black Dahlia). “I just don’t know how to not be like a robot,” Del Rey says while wearing a Monroe-like wig. “I just need to shoot, shoot, shoot. It’s not working anymore for me.”
The dialogue flows right into Del Rey’s lyrics: “Sittin’ on the sofa, feelin’ super suicidal/ Hate to say the word, but, baby, hand on the Bible, I do/ Feel like it’s you the one who’s bringin’ me down.” Watch the video below.

Melbourne-based private film finance group Elevate Production Finance has hired Shana Levine as head of production investment.
Levine joins other recent recruits in London-based film financier and producer Charles Auty, who is COO, and Brisbane-based entertainment and finance lawyer Ted Cawrey, who is head of legal and business affairs.
Epf MD Craig McMahon said Levine’s appointment would now mean the company could provide “superior end-to-end service to productions”.
Since launching in 2017, Elevate has helped fund a number of Australian and international films, including George Miller’s Three Thousand Years Of Longing; Rich Lee’s War Of The Worlds starring Eva Longoria; Liam-Neeson starrer Blacklight; Sophia Banks’ debut feature Black Site; and Film Nation’s Misanthrope, directed by Damián Szifron.
During the height of Covid-19, the company, which is backed by Australian and international institutions and private equity, reassessed its protocols to provide debt funding to productions despite the pandemic.

A day before the release of her new LP Norman Fucking Rockwell, Lana Del Rey has dropped a video for her sultry cover of Sublime’s “Doin’ Time,” in which a super-sized version of the singer stomps around Venice Beach.
Directed by Rich Lee and homage of sorts to the b-movie classic Attack of the 50 Foot Woman, the grainy clip opens with Del Rey the Giant waking up in an aqueduct. She stretches, stands up and begins to stomp around Los Angeles, gently stepping over highways to avoid crushing cars like a peaceful Godzilla.

Lana Del Rey turns reflective in her double music video for “Fuck It I Love You” and “The Greatest,” which the singer released Thursday. Both tracks are from her forthcoming album Norman Fucking Rockwell, arriving August 30th.
“Fuck It I Love You” is about as straightforward romantic as a Lana Del Rey track can get, sung over images of Del Rey swinging on a tire swing, painting in a studio, real-surfing in the ocean and fake-surfing with bodybuilder Rich Lee. The video periodically cuts to Del Rey performing karaoke in an unassuming dive.

Em and Royce Da 5'9" emerge from the darkness and find enlightenment in the new clip.

Given its general grittiness (and the fact that it's called Hell: The Sequel), Eminem and Royce Da 5'9" 's Bad Meets Evil album seems like the last place you'd ever find Bruno Mars. And yet, the pompadour-powered crooner shows up to sing the hook on "Lighters" (he also produced the track with his Smeezingtons cohorts), a decidedly upbeat ballad that provides a brief respite from the blood-and-guts boasts that Em and Royce pack on the disc.
And sure, the track feels out of place because of that fact, but that hasn't stopped it from becoming a rather sizeable Billboard hit. So it makes sense that there'd be an accompanying video that matches its uplift ethos every step of the way. And now, that video, directed by...

Bruno Mars was enlisted by Eminem and Royce Da 5'9" for their Bad Meets Evil Hell: The Sequel track "Lighters". The sweeping, inspirational track mixes Em's penchant for spitting fire, Royce's keen pop-culture eye and Bruno's smooth pop sensibility.
The trio was spotted shooting the song's video at the tail-end of July. When MTV News caught up with Vma nominee Mars this week, he shared that the Rich Lee-directed clip will certainly leave fans as inspired as the song does. "We shot the video ... that should be coming out very, very soon," he said. "But that's their baby, so I'm not going to blow the lid."
Instead of revealing any actual video details, Mars decided to show off his comedic side about what he is doing in the video.

It seems that Eminem and Royce Da 5'9" have decided to release Bruno Mars-assisted track "Lighters" as the next Bad Meets Evil single. As an effort to support the song, a music video has already been filmed and is expected to premiere sometime soon.
The Slim Shady and Royce filmed the clip in Los Angeles with director Rich Lee ("Not Afraid"). In a picture taken from the set, it's seen the two rappers will share screen with their featured guest Bruno. The threesome are snapped striking a pose together wearing casual attires.
In related news, Eminem and Bruno Mars receive multiple nods at this year's nominations of MTV Video Music Awards. The "Love the Way You Lie" hitmaker grabs four noms, while the "Grenade" crooner follows closely with three. In one of the categories, they bump into each other, vying for Best Male Video along with Cee-Lo, Kanye West and Kid Cudi.

Jason Derulo gets wild in a newly-released music video for his new single "Don't Wanna Go Home". The "Whatcha Say" hitmaker throws a never-ending party which includes a lot of dancing, flipping and writhing as people in the room are reluctant to call it a night.
To MTV, Jason said the video is about "these creatures who can't get enough of this amazing party." Writing the treatment with Rich Lee, the singer/songwriter who recently won big at Bmi Pop Music Awards elaborated his statement, "Basically, it's not about going to the club, it's about never leaving the club."
"I'm very hands-on with everything that I do, and I wrote 'Don't Wanna Go Home,' and I wanted to write a video right after I finished doing the song 'cause I actually saw it [in my mind], what this video is about," he added. "But it's not a club - it's a warehouse and we live here.

Jason Derülo and his fellow clubgoers are at once exhausted from a party the night before and pumped to party it up even more in the Rich Lee-directed video for "Don't Wanna Go Home," which premiered on Wednesday (May 25).
Staged in a warehouse, Derülo's video feels like it could have easily starred Ke$ha, J.Lo or Britney Spears thanks to its dance sequences, rain and lasers. The video closes out with Derülo and his dancers still enjoying their never-ending party. One line in the song declares, "Daylight come and we don't wanna go home," a play on "The Banana Boat Song" made famous by Harry Belafonte.

Willow Smith debuts a cinematic music video for her second single "21st Century Girl". The 10-year-old Roc Nation artist is raised from under the ground and pulls an entire city out of the desert sand. She parades around the city with a bunch of friends, runs with the wolves and breaks into a spontaneous outburst of dancing on the streets.
"21st Century Girl" is released to follow up Willow's chart-busting debut single "Whip My Hair", and will be listed in her upcoming first studio album. "It's about girls who can be themselves. They're walking toward their goal. They're thriving to be the best, 'cause you know that you can do it," she said in a behind-the-scene clip.

Video features the star singing girl-power song in the desert and the city.
By Jocelyn Vena
Willow Smith
An old woman (played by Cicely Tyson) walks in the desert, mumbling to herself when she comes across bone fragments. As she digs her way through the sand, she finds various objects. The sand begins to rumble and out comes a hooded Willow Smith. The woman whispers something in her ear and disappears. Taking a look around, Willow grabs some dirt and a butterfly emerges out of nothing.
Thus begins the video for "21st Century Girl." Looking fierce in a red and yellow outfit, Smith shows some swagga as she runs through the desert, singing the girl-power song, pulling guitars from the sand with wolves and other precocious kids at her side.

Eminem was on edge after the release of his Relapse album, his first project after a five-year layoff during which he battled depression and drug dependency. The stakes were high for the Shady One, and although Relapse landed atop the charts — and scored the biggest-selling rap release of 2009 — the heralded Detroit lyricist received lukewarm reviews for the collection.
So yes, he was back, but, in a sense, he hadn't quite made his return.
But then he unleashed a vicious freestyle while visiting Tim Westwood in the U.K., and followed that up with his dominating verse on Drake's superstar-laden "Forever" collabo. Ahead of the release of Recovery, Em dropped his official comeback anthem, the reflective "Not Afraid."

Young Hollywood is determined to beat cancer.
That's why over a dozen stars took part in the newest Stand Up to Cancer PSA, including Kristen Bell, Zac Efron, Dakota Fanning, Vanessa Hudgens, Olivia Munn, Aubrey Plaza, Donald Faison, and Jon Heder.
The "Change The Odds" PSA will help raise awareness and funds for innovative cancer research. It's co-directed by Marc Webb ("500 Days of Summer," Untitled "Spider Man" Reboot) and Rich Lee, and produced by Laura Ziskin and Pam Williams.
