After a trip to a state appeals court, a lawsuit from actress Hayley Marie Norman accusing ABC, Tracee Ellis Ross and Kenya Barris of lifting ideas from a show she’d been pitching that she alleges was turned into Black-ish spinoff Mixed-ish without her involvement has been dismissed.
The 2nd District Court of Appeal found that the lawsuit shouldn’t have been allowed to proceed against Ross and Artists First, a production and management company that counts her and Barris among its clients. It said, in a ruling issued on Tuesday, that “all of Norman’s claims arise from protected activity,” reversing the trial court and delivering a finishing blow to her lawsuit.
In a statement, Michael Plonsker, a lawyer for Norman, said “We strongly do not agree with the appellate decision.”
Norman alleged she pitched her series, a “30-minute sitcom, employing flashbacks, that follows the journey of a mixed-race...

"Always did have a flavor for danger." Lionsgate has dropped a new trailer for a dark, edgy thriller comedy titled Habit, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Janell Shirtcliff. This film has dropped out of nowhere, not hitting any festivals or anywhere else before opening in August this summer. It definitely looks like a very Los Angeles film made by Los Angeles people for Los Angeles people. A street smart party girl gets mixed up in a violent drug deal and finds a possible way out by masquerading as a Nun with her other BFFs to escape a L.A. drug lord. The Habit ensemble cast includes Bella Thorne, Gavin Rossdale, Libby Mintz, Andreja Pejic, Hana Mae Lee, Ione Skye, Aaron Diaz, Jamie Hince, Hayley Marie Norman, Alison Mosshart, with Paris Jackson and Josie Ho. This (obviously) looks all wild & crazy, and instantly forgettable, another of these mediocre crime...

The kids just aren’t the same anymore and it’s slowly making Harvey (Robert Patrick) go insane. His son (Ronnie Gene Blevins’ David) thinks it’s dementia and wants to put him in an assisted living institute, but that’s merely another example of America’s youth forgetting their responsibilities. In his day family took care of itself. When Harvey’s wife died, he did everything to give his son a good life. And this is his reward? Abandonment? He’s sacrificed blood, sweat, tears, and time and now he’s done watching the world devolve around him as though it was all for naught. If Harvey’s to be dismissed by society as a dinosaur longing for a past where “men were men and women knew it,” he’s going to go out banging that drum.

After all of the amazingly spot-on quotes Chris Rock has given over the last two weeks, we almost forgot he has a movie to promote. Top Five, written, directed by, and starring Rock, hits theaters Friday and brings with it a pack of today’s most hilarious comedic voices. Aside from great cameos, the film is an accurate look at the concept of celebrity culture (reality stars included). As Andre Allen, Rock plays a successful movie star at a crossroads in his career. He wants to be taken seriously but loses sight of what he’s best at after fat Hollywood check for a Tracy Jordan-esque franchise and too much drinking. Uprize, a super serious depiction of the Haitian revolution is supposed to put him back on top, but all anyone wants to talk about is his upcoming wedding.

Comedians looking to stretch themselves as actors are a common phenomenon, but it doesn’t always work out well. Chris Rock is one who has managed some success both in front of and behind the camera, and he’s tackling the subject directly in his new comedy drama, Top Five. The first trailer for the film has landed online. Rock, who writes and directs, also plays Andre Allen, a man once described as among the funniest in America, who swapped stand up for wacky box office hits. Now, though, he’s looking to branch out, and isn’t feeling particularly funny. With an impending wedding to a reality TV starlet (Gabrielle Union), his agent (Kevin Hart) breathing down his neck and a reporter (Rosario Dawson) writing a profile on him and probing his life, he’s trying to figure things out.The main man has assembled a funny cast that also includes Romany Malco,...

As Vulture's Streaming Week comes to a close, here are five web series currently in progress that are worth five minutes of your time. Idiotsitter A struggling young woman (Charlotte Newhouse) becomes the court-appointed guardian to a rich, hard-partying teenager (Workaholics’ Jillian Bell). Hello Cupid Longtime friends Whitney (Ashley Blaine Featherson) and Robyn (Hayley Marie Norman) don’t share the same taste in men—except for the times when they share it too much. Be Here Nowish What happens when two New Yorkers in turmoil move to Los Angeles in search of spiritual enlightenment? A lot of weird “energy” ceremonies. Reggie Watts: Teach In each episode, Watts channels a different teacher character, imparting bizarre, factually inaccurate, yet still enthralling wisdom to his students. Whatever This Is. A pair of production assistants struggle to make it in New York with crappy, soul-wrecking gigs on bad reality-tv shows. Often funny but...

We returned to watching Jim do what he does best on The Glades this week: find the truth about who killed his victim, as "Glade-iators" brought us back to Jim being the only goofy thing on the series.
After last week’s groan-inducing offering of a zombie story that complicated the case to the point of not understanding why the victim was killed, imagine my surprise when this week’s victim was a banker by-day and roller derby girl by-night.... and nothing else.
Having the story less complex meant there was room for Callie to have a bit of a focus. She made a house call to basketball legend Darius Locke, where her professional ethics kicked in as he was deceptive in the number or Cortisone shots he had received.
While Darius was very smooth about how he had gotten all the warnings and how great Callie must be to...

Title: Dorfman in Love Director: Bradley Leong Starring: Sara Rue, Elliott Gould, Jonathan Chase, Johann Urb, Haaz Sleiman, Keri Lynn Pratt, Sophie Monk, Hayley Marie Norman, Kelen Coleman, Scott Wilson Saddled with a terrible, clunky title and a programmatic narrative that represents a fairly unpersuasive blend of the familiar and contrived, Los Angeles-set indie romantic comedy “Dorfman in Love” connects most fitfully as a vehicle for the charms of star Sara Rue. Penned by Wendy Kout and directed by Bradley Leong, the big-hearted movie is a sort of “Bridget Jones’s Diary” by way of “(500) Days of Summer,” though without the apexes of cleverness and flair found in those films. It’s charming enough [ Read More ]

Horatio asks what sort of weapon was used and Delko (Adam Rodriguez) thinks someone would have noticed a weapon. Not really since anything can be used. Horatio: "...it's called blunt-force trauma." Jo (Sela Ward) takes Mac (Gary Sinise) shopping, which he hates and can't believe he let her talk him into it. Oh admit it, you really wanted to go! Mac notices a pickpocket whom he watches and then chases. Jo can't believe he just did that. She then calls the window display amazing, agreed by the pickpocket, whom she wasn't talking to. Mac still is disinterested until he sees a Db in the display. Mac: "You see why I hate shopping." They process the shop window. Yay Danny (Carmine Giovinazzo) without Lindsay's (Anna Belknap) 'shackles' ha. Last week, we told you about Margo Harshman playing Sylvia, the "blunt and slightly creepy" supposed lesbian in the new (and completely unoriginal) cheerleader flick, Fired Up. But Harshman isn't the only one getting her gay on in the film: There's also a confirmed lesbian couple, played by Danneel Harris (One Tree Hill) and Hayley Marie Norman. Danneel Harris
In a recent interview, Harris had this to say about playing opposite Norman as half of a cheering same-sex couple:
The first time we met, it was like, “Oh, hi. Guess we’re going to be, like, the lesbian couple.” Neither of us had played that kind of role before. I know how to handle a guy costar; you just say, “Hi, how are you? Are you going to brush your teeth before the kissing scene?” But with a girl it’s like, “Uh, I like your shirt.” Awkward. But now we’re really good friends.

Sarah Roemer and Nicholas D'Agosto in Fired Up!
Photo: Screen Gems I went into Fired Up! second guessing the premise from the outset. How could a PG-13 raunchy teen sex comedy be any good? I forgot a PG-13 rating pretty much means the only two things not allowed are nudity and an overt number of uses of the F-word. Fired Up! takes advantage of all the PG-13 loop holes, avoids using even one f-bomb and on top of that actually delivers enough comedy to keep you entertained throughout. I'm as shocked by all of this as you may be, but Fired Up! actually makes for a decent comedic distraction. The story centers on Shawn and Nick (Nicholas D'Agosto and Eric Christian Olsen), a pair of football jocks who don't want to go to this year's football camp and decide to ditch, join the cheerleading squad and spend three weeks surrounded by cheerleaders.
