Eight For Silver, Netflix, from Easter Monday
If the news that Leigh Whannell's Wolfman has been delayed until 2025 has left you howling, then this werewolf twist on the myth should help. Released in cinemas under the much more boring title The Cursed, Sean Ellis' atmospheric period horror is thankfully back under its old moniker for its Netflix release. A silver bullet extracted from a dead man near the start of the film, clues us into the territory we're entering as the film moves back in time to his childhood in rural France. When his heartless father massacres a Romany settlement, the children start to have nightmares... and then begin to disappear. As pathologist John McBride (Boyd Holbrook) suspects something supernatural is at work, Ellis plays around with the werewolf myth that draws on the idea of a beast consuming you from within.

Some bonds develop unexpectedly, transcending the limits of professional collaborations. For Irish actor Cillian Murphy, known for his enigmatic roles and intense performances, one such unexpected bromance took center stage, not with Jamie Dornan, but with the iconic filmmaker, Christopher Nolan.

Irish actors Jamie Dornan and Cillian Murphy might seem like a natural match. After all, they hail from the same land and even broke out into the public eye around the same time with 50 Shades of Grey and Peaky Blinders, respectively. However, despite their initial admiration for each other’s work, Murphy’s true bromance bloomed with someone else entirely: Hollywood Auteur Christopher Nolan.

Eight for Silver is a horror movie that was originally released in 2021 under the title The Cursed. Directed by Sean Ellis, it stars Boyd Holbrook, Kelly Reilly, and Alistair Petrie and takes place in the late 19th century, centring around a small village in France where a series of brutal murders have taken place. The locals are convinced that a pack of wolves is responsible for the killings, but a British pathologist, John McBride (Holbrook), arrives to investigate and discovers that something far more sinister is at play.
One of the strengths of Eight for Silver is its visual style. The movie is shot in a dark, atmospheric manner that perfectly captures the eerie and foreboding mood of the story.

The film boasts a superb cast, including Boyd Holbrook (The Sandman) and Cannes-winner Kelly Reilly (Yellowstone), in an eerie story about a small town in 19th century France menaced by an ancient curse.
Sumptuously shot, packed with frights and superb special effects, with a mesmerising, spine-tingler of a score, and featuring a scarecrow “that’ll haunt your dreams” (Bloody Disgusting), the film recalls, according to Screen Daily “everything from Hammer to The Innocents, Dracula to creepy country house Gothic horror”.

The main extra here is a Behind The Scenes featurette, which is short but includes contributions from several cast members as well as director Sean Ellis, sharing their thoughts on the film and why they got involved with it. There's also a chance to see the monster in action - wheels and all - and there's some discussion of its design.
In addition to this, the disc includes the theatrical trailer, which features some great editing, patching together the scariest bits of the film but managing not to spoil its surprises. This is a tricky task and it's rare to see it accomplished so well.
The menu is simple and easy to use. The only real problem is that the volume is significantly higher in the extras than in the film itself, so you will need to be ready with the remote control....

Aftershock (Tonya Lewis Lee and Paula Eiselt)
A work of deep pain and fervent justice, Tonya Lewis Lee and Paula Eiselt’s Sundance winner Aftershock examines the failings of maternal health support particularly as it relates to Black mothers. Centering on two NYC families forever torn apart after maternal deaths due to childbirth-related complications, the film takes an intimate look at the widowers and family left behind as they pick up the pieces to fight for change in a prejudiced system. Amongst its most interesting passages, the filmmakers also go back decades and beyond, filling in the historical foundation for how we ended up with our current, faltering maternal health system and setting the stage for how it can be changed.

‘Metro Manila‘ is the story of a good man in a bad world. All elements in the movie seems to stem from that core principle and the only question left for the story to answer is if a good man can remain good when all odds are piled against him. And, except for the unconditional love of a family, I really mean all odds. Right off the bat, Oscar Ramirez (Jake Macapagal), an ex-military turned farmer, is forced by the severe rural economic crisis to sell all his few belongings and start anew with his family in the fascinating and colorful chaos of Manila, a gritty and chaotic megalopolis where dreams seems to be forged. Unfortunately, as soon he will discover, the city specializes in bad dreams. The relentless, unmerciful, dog-eat-dog pulse of the streets beats the hope out of the Ramirez family bit by bit, bite by bite, until...

After their father, a cold-hearted land baron, ruthlessly slaughters a camp of Romani who staked a claim to his land, young Charlotte (Amelia Crouch) and Edward (Max Mackintosh) begin to have ominous dreams of a human scarecrow and silver teeth. The dreams draw them and other children from the nearby village to the site of the massacre, and soon after, Edward goes missing. The discovery of grisly remains attracts the attention of a grief-stricken pathologist (Boyd Holbrook), who suspects something supernatural is lurking in the surrounding forest and vows to hunt it down and destroy it.

On Monday, Spider-Man: No Way Home crawled its way past Avatar’s $760.5 million to become the third highest domestic grosser of all time. With that milestone reached, the baton is ready to be passed to Sony’s Uncharted, the long-awaited video game adaptation that also gives Tom Holland his biggest role yet outside of the MCU. The adventure film, which co-stars Mark Wahlberg, should spark things up at the box office after what has been a soft start to the year.
Ruben Fleischer directs Uncharted after having successfully launched the Venom franchise for Sony (not to mention hitting the jackpot with the Zombieland films). The Indiana Jones-esque tale acts as a prequel to the games, telling the story of a young version of Nathan Drake (played by Holland) before he becomes the full-fledged, world-class treasure hunting hero. He is taken under the wing of Sully (Wahlberg) to find the...

Werewolf stories frequently involve allegorical explorations of the duality of man: the clash between the "civilized" surface layer and the violent beast within. But unlike so many other films in this genre, writer/director Sean Ellis's new werewolf thriller "The Cursed" does not fixate on a gruesome physical transformation to illustrate that duality. Instead, Ellis deploys the werewolf as a roaming specter hellbent on revenge -- and in this film,...

Ready for growing hair, sprouting teeth, and howling at the moon that is a Werewolf horror movie?
Director Sean Ellis’ gothic thriller The Cursed will be released in theaters on February 18, 2022. Written and helmed by Sean Ellis, The Cursed stars Boyd Holbrook, Kelly Reilly and Alistair Petrie in a reimagining of the werewolf legend.
Ellis said: “The Cursed was born from the desire to reimagine and update the Werewolf legend for a modern day audience. I wanted to play on the known folklore of the legend and give it a fresh approach to the cliched story devices that have been copied from the original 1941 film, The Wolf Man.”
In the late 1800s, a once-peaceful remote country village is under attack—but by who or what, no one knows. Villagers spread rumors of a cursed land, supernatural forces, and even demonic creatures, as the disappearances and killings continue. Pathologist John McBride arrives to investigate the danger,...

The Visual Effects Society unveiled nominations Tuesday for its 20th annual Ves Awards, with Warner Bros’ Dune and Disney’s animated Encanto leading all nominees with six apiece, followed by the Disney+ Marvel series Loki which has four noms to lead all broadcast series.
The group, celebrating its 25th anniversary, recognizes the year’s best in outstanding visual effects artistry and innovation across film, animation, television, commercials and video games. With the Omicron variant surging, the Ves Awards ceremony does not have a date or format yet; those decisions are still to be made and tickets are not yet up for sale.

Horror has many dimensions still to be explored, says Dp, director and writer Sean Ellis in describing his film screening in the Camerimage Film Festival’s main competition, “Eight for Silver.”
A dark and brooding story of evil’s long tail, the film is Ellis’ fifth feature since an impressive debut with the surreal “Cashback” in 2006 and follows his Prague-shot true-story thriller “Anthropoid,” a remarkably detailed and accurate account of the most successful assassination plot of World War II against a top Nazi commander, Reinhard Heydrich.
“Eight for Silver” opens theatrically in the U.S. next spring or summer and is also set in the past, on a French country estate where a different kind of overlord tempts fate with evil deeds. But in this case the veil of time allows for an immersive world in which curses, monsters and possession come around to ensure a terrifying dose of karmic payback.

For her latest role, actress Kelly Reilly transforms herself into a desperate mother and emotionally estranged wife who fears that one of her children has been claimed by a bloodthirsty werewolf terrorizing the area surrounding her familial estate in the late 19th century. Written and directed by Sean Ellis, Eight for Silver examines the monsters lurking among us—both human and otherwise—and Reilly’s character Isabelle finds herself surrounded by unimaginable horror and tragedy.
Eight for Silver recently celebrated its world premiere during the 2021 Sundance Film Festival, and to mark the occasion, Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak with Reilly about her involvement with the film and her experiences collaborating with Ellis. This past weekend, writer/director Sean Ellis celebrated the world premiere of his latest project, Eight for Silver, at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival. The film transports viewers back to the 19th century as a group of wealthy landowners slaughters a clan of Roma gypsies, which leads to unfathomable repercussions involving a cursed item that transforms its victim into a bloodthirsty creature. Eight for Silver stars Boyd Holbrook, Kelly Reilly, and Alistair Petrie.
Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to speak with Ellis about Eight for Silver, and he discussed his approach to the story for his historical horror film, and why he wanted to blend fact and fiction for the project. Ellis also chatted about how elements of Eight for Silver are still relevant today and working with his cast as well.

When word got out that Metro Manila director Sean Ellis was premiering a film about werewolves at the 2021 Sundance Festival, it immediately became one of the most anticipated films for this year’s fest. Ellis had already proved himself a competent director, both with his BAFTA nominated film Metro Manila as well as his Oscar nominated short film debut Cashback, so the idea of him returning to the festival with his take on one of Hollywood’s most iconic movie monsters was bound to turn some heads.
It is almost unheard of for a monster film to be programmed in the premiere category at Sundance, as most often than not, these films tend to be sequestered to the rowdy and rambunctious crowds that stalk the festival at night. All early indicators showed that this was going to be a horror movie for the ages, and boy did it not disappoint.

Sundance 2021 has been filled with so many movies about—and made in—the current pandemic that a 19th-century, gory genre flick feels like a return to normalcy. Then again, Eight for Silver, a new werewolf gothic written and directed by Sean Ellis, is still focused on the containment of spreading diseases. A cholera outbreak surrounds this beastly saga while family members vanish mysteriously and inhuman transformations multiply with each passing day. The specter of death hovers in the dark, foggy air, the product of cursed land and religious prophecy and other mythical elements packed into this engaging if only partially-conceived horror.
It’s not the movie you expect to see based on its prologue. Beginning in the trenches of World War I during the Battle of Somme, the camera glides over army ranks preparing to charge from their bunkers while battling explosions of mustard gas burning holes through their uniforms.

Writer-director Sean Ellis revisits the werewolf legend as a fogbound descent into Victorian Gothic in Eight for Silver. Led by Boyd Holbrook as a pathologist in the late 1800s who knows a thing or two about nightmarish curses, stalking lycanthropic beasts and family tragedy, the film is more suspenseful than scary, higher on sustained atmosphere than well-rounded characters. Eight For Silver. Sean Ellis: 'I wasn't interested in making a film where someone sprouts teeth grows hair, and howls at the Moon' Photo: Courtesy of Sundance Institute Metro Manila and Anthropoid writer/director Sean Ellis steps back to the late-1800s for his latest film, Eight For Silver to reimagine the werewolf myth. The film, which had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, sees a landowner (Alister Petrie) reap a Romany curse that leads to the disappearance of his son and the arrival of a pathologist (Boyd Holbrook), who aims to hunt the beast he believes is to blame. We caught up with Ellis over Zoom. Please note that this interview contains mild spoilers about the nature of the creature, so you may want to watch the film before reading on.

One of the more outrageous scenes in the Sundance horror movie “Eight for Silver” involves star Boyd Holbrook using a butcher knife to dissect a massive werewolf monstrosity, only to reveal a young woman crawling and screaming out of the cavity that they then have to kill. It’s a wild moment, but director Sean Ellis feared the young actress wouldn’t be up for it when they learned that she suffers panic attacks.

IndieWire reached out to the cinematographers behind the scripted narrative features premiering this week at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival to find out which cameras, lenses, and formats they used, and why they chose them to create the looks and meet the production demands of their films. Here are their responses.
Films appear in alphabetical order by title.
“Censor”
Section: Midnight
Dir: Prano Bailey-Bond, DoP: Annika Summerson
Format: 35mm Kodak 5219 and 5207, Sony 4K X-ocn
Camera: Arricam Lt& St, Sony Venice
Lens: Canon K-35
Summerson: I shot a short film with “Censor” director Prano Bailey-Bond called “Nasty” on s16mm years ago which was the calling card for this feature so we already had it in our minds to shoot on film, 35mm if possible. Both because we love the organic look and the texture of film, and also because it’s set in the 1980’s and pays homage to the video nasties of the time.

It’s a familiar refrain these days: this year’s Sundance Film Festival will look a fair bit different than years past, but the same depth of filmmaking talent appears to still be on offer.
